Two rather computational papers come to mind. When you put the two together, you get close to quality's effect on demand. Archak, N., Ghose, A., et al. Dear Arjan, we have a paper about the impact of internet reviews on the trustworthiness of the seller: Utz, S., Matzat, U., & Snijders, C. (2009). "Online Reputation Systems: The Effects of Feedback Comments and Reactions on Building and Rebuilding Trust in Online Auctions." in: International Journal of Electronic Commerce, 13, 3: 95-118. In the list of references of this paper you find other studies, for instance: Pavlou, P. A. and Dimoka, A. Call for Proposals:Internet Governance
by Nanette Levinson 21 Feb '10

21 Feb '10

Third International Workshop on Global Internet Governance: An Interdisciplinary Research Field in Construction Montreal (QC), Canada - 30-31 May 2010 Organized by GigaNet, in cooperation with The Canadian Communication Association and Media@McGill Co-sponsored by GigaNet, ACC-CCA, Media@McGill, LIP6/CNRS and UPMC Preliminary Announcement and Call for Contributions The Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) invites you to participate in its third scholarly workshop to be held in Montreal (QC), Canada, on 30-31 May 2010. This workshop is organized in cooperation with the Canadian Communication Association and Media@McGill, during the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) 2010 Congress week in Montreal. Building on the success of its first two editions, respectively in Paris, France in June 2008 and in Brussels, Belgium in May 2009, the purpose of this third GigaNet workshop is twofold: The first day will be dedicated to outreach sessions aimed at increasing the interest in the Global Internet Governance field among both various academic disciplines and the civil society at large, including but not limited to NGOs and civil society groups active in related fields. These outreach sessions will include academic tutorials on Global Internet Governance as well as information and discussion led by experts in the field on current Global Internet Governance debates and their relevance to public policy making. Detailed information on the outreach sessions' program will be distributed closer to the event itself. The second day will feature thematic presentations selected upon submissions made in response to this call for contributions. We invite scholars to present and discuss their work- in-progress in Internet Governance-related research, with the aim to identify emerging research themes and design a research agenda. Rather than featuring academic paper presentations, the workshop aims at providing a survey of current academic activities in the field, in order to share ideas and forge possible collaborations. Submissions are expected to focus on presenting problematics, research designs, preliminary empirical results and conclusions in the aim of stimulating reflection and discussion amongst the audience. Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: involved actors and their interactions; Internet governance institutions and regimes; legal, socio-economical, behavioral and technical regulation means; Internet governance policy issues. Submissions in view of thematic presentations should be sent by 20 March 2010 to Meryem Marzouki (Meryem.Marzouki(a)lip6.fr) They should be written in English and include the name, affiliation, e-mail address and short bio of author(s), along with no more than 500 words of research work description. The program committee will notify applicants by 20 April 2010. To encourage knowledge dissemination, relevant submissions will be published on the workshop website. Authors of selected submissions will be invited to present their work in the workshop thematic sessions. Program Committee: Laura DeNardis, Yale U., USA; Meryem Marzouki, CNRS & U. Re: [Air-L] Privacy Buzz + I love Alaska
by William Bain 21 Feb '10

21 Feb '10

First of all, thanks to Seda Guerses for the reference to _I Love Alaska_ and the thought-provoking discussion on surveillance and related matters. I would just like to say something about one brief comment of yours, Seda, when you say "the filmmakers saw the queries of this anonymous user as her prose and used it to narrate their film (without her knowledge)." I am not qualified to answer technically on the use of the person's prose without their knowledge. But I do know, as I imagine you do as well, that there are any number of techniques related to the internet being used today in poetic (in the broad sense of the term to include fiction, film, etc.) creation. One simple example is to searchengine some term and use the text(s) that are returned in a way similar to what you imply was done in _Alaska_. But my main point is that it is not only the "anonymous user's ... prose" that got used in the film. Maybe this is too picky for your main point, I don't know. But there are really two basic _verbal_ narratives in the film, the written stage directions and the spoken "character" speech based on the aol material. Without going into questions of fair usage, this double narrative is part of what turns the material into a poem (film, in this case). Finally, a third (or more) narrative is provided by the camera work. And one thing that strikes me about the visuals is the sensual or sexual imagery of the nature shots. The camerawork starts with the traditionally female contours of the fields and the mountains. By episode 11, it moves to a phallic tree center screen, so that effectively the photography works its way to an erection, not necessarily male. By the final episode 13, you could say that the tree now leans in toward the center of the shot. Also striking in this final sequence are the power lines at the top of the image, like a techno connection between nature and manufactured commodities. The camera then apparently parodies a cliché from the Western movie, in those last shots where the screen darkens as the clouds move across the sky. So, on this interpretation, do camera, written and spoken texts, and perhaps viewers of the film sort of ride into a techno sunset. This may be very tangential to your discussion, which, as I say, I consider very interesting and valuable, but, well, lots of things are marginal. Best wishes, Bill William Bain PhD Student Area of literary theory Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona

Post-doc position in the Netherlands Digital Literacies of Immigrant Youth for the Formation of Identity and Learning Networks
by Holly Kruse 20 Feb '10

20 Feb '10

Forwarded on request for Mariette de Haan (m.dehaan(a)uu.nl) Holly holly.kruse(a)gmail.com holly-kruse(a)utulsa.edu ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: Post-doc position in the Netherlands Digital Literacies of Immigrant Youth for the Formation of Identity and Learning Networks From: Haan, M. de (Mariëtte) <m.dehaan(a)uu.nl> Date: Sat, February 20, 2010 12:19 am To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Air-L list members, Please spread this announcement under Dutch speaking post-docs. Thanks, Mariette de Haan The digital literacy practices of immigrant youth for the formation of identity and learning networks This project is focused on the analysis of the everyday digital literacy practices of Moroccan and Turkish immigrant youth. While the past several years have seen an increasing amount of research on the digital literacy practices of youth, within and well beyond the Netherlands, relatively little of this work to date has focused on immigrant youth and their productions and interpretations of social media (e.g. web logs, Hyves, YouTube, texting, Twitter, gaming). This project will provide a unique contribution to the field by developing ethnographic studies of youth as they use social media and integrate it into their everyday lives in the Netherlands. We are particularly interested in how digital literacy practices are used to produce identities and learning networks. What are the shapes and scales of new media networks for Moroccan immigrant youth? How are these new networks changing, and how are they related to social networks with longer histories (e.g., extended family, community)? How do networks formed through practices with social media support the development of local, national, and transnational identities? How do such networks also structure new social spaces for learning? These questions are addressed in this project through ethnographic research that will be augmented with other research methods, including social network analysis and survey data. > > See also:http://www.uu.nl/NL/Informatie/sollicitanten/Pages/Vacatures.aspx > > Mariëtte de Haan| Professor of Intercultural Education| Utrecht University > I Faculty of Social Sciences I Langeveld Institute, Heidelberglaan 1, > 3584 CS Utrecht I The Netherlands I M.deHaan(a)uu.nl I > www.fss.uu.nl/ped/dehaan I http://www.uu.nl/wiredup > > > Het Langeveld Instituut heeft ten behoeve van het Wired Up programma een > vacature voor een > > > Postdoc digitale geletterdheid van migrantenjeugd (0,8 fte) > > > > Functie-inhoud > > De postdocpositie wordt vervuld binnen het grotere kader van het Wired Up > programma, een internationaal, interdisciplinair project gefinancierd door > de Universiteit Utrecht in het kader van het High Potential Programma. call for chapters - CHURCH AND NEW MEDIA: PERSPECTIVES, PRACTICES AND FUTURES
by Charles Ess 20 Feb '10

20 Feb '10

Dear AoIRists, Following is a somewhat abbreviated call for chapters - my guess is that most AoIRists will likely be interested (if at all) in Section III. A complete version of the call is happily available on request from either me or Pauline Hope Cheong. As usual, please distribute widely and as is appropriate. thanks, charles == Call for Papers for Edited Book on CHURCH AND NEW MEDIA: PERSPECTIVES, PRACTICES AND FUTURES Editors: Pauline Hope Cheong, Peter Fischer-Nielsen, Stefan Gelfgren and Charles Ess Background and Rationale This book brings together, for the first time in five years, a collection of key articles in the area of religion and the Internet, particularly as new media relates to church, mission and interfaith dialogue. In light of the increasing mediation of everyday life in many parts of the world, this book approaches online religion with a fresh perspective, to account for contemporary developments in media and spirituality, with implications for faith and other civic organizations. Arguably, as institutionalized religions and movements rush to leverage the Web to improve their reach, religious communication on the Internet takes an increasingly significant role alongside more traditional venues for such discourse. It may be, however, that religious use associated with new media problematizes established faith rituals, and religious community building in both its conception and operationalization. Changes in the Church can also be conceived as intertwined with a range of other forms of social and political developments, such that new media acts as an agent and practice to challenge and transform the influence and authority of the Church. Furthermore, as ³new² media is a moving target, there may be past concepts that are more able to explain the nature of church life (such as evangelical mission and systematic theology) or new concepts that are being developed that are better able to address the diversity and complexity of contemporary social and religious life (such as the ideas of social networking, viral marketing and church branding). This edited collection aims to address and inform such issues and debates by offering new empirical, theoretical, and theological insights into how religious life continues to transform and be transformed by these new communication technologies. Current contributors, together with the editors, include Knut Lundby, Heidi Campbell, Mark Johns and Jørgen Straarup. We hereby invite proposals for additional chapters (particularly in the historical and theological sections as explained below) that will complement and expand upon these contributions. Section 1: Theoretical Approaches This section maps the range of theoretical perspectives on religion and new media. A number of different theories have proven useful for researchers and scholars but new media also challenge our theoretical frameworks and categories. How far do current theories ³work² in helping us research and understand the complex interactions between religious life and new media and how far are new theoretical understandings needed? And: what might these new theoretical understandings ³look like² i.e., are new theoretical frameworks and categories available that have yet to be fully explored by scholars and researchers that can be argued to be potentially fruitful? Section II: Historical Perspectives This section discusses the presence and significance of historical perspectives in church and new media research. Transformations in communication media are deeply interwoven with the history and theology of Christianity. In light of this history, how do churches respond to the continued expansion of contemporary communication media? For example, given the close correlations between distinctive forms and modalities of communication including the broad categories of orality, literacy, print, and the secondary orality/literacy of electronic media and conceptions of self, community, and institutional authority, what does this history suggest regarding the possible implications and challenges of contemporary shifts towards new media? Section III: Empirical Investigations This section reports on the empirical research studies that investigate emerging media and social media practices related to the Church. Disciplines represented include but are not restricted to: sociology of religion, ethnography and online ethnography, linguistics, and the social sciences and humanities more broadly as represented within the field of computer-mediated communication. Contributions may focus on, but not restricted to, contemporary uses (successful and not so successful) of new media in the life of religious communities (local, national, international). Guiding questions for such research and studies include: Do the possibilities and affordances of new media lead to genuinely new and demonstrable impacts on the life of congregations? What factors appear to accompany whether or not a given community or institution embraces or resists specific media? What factors are at work in both successes and failures for faith believers and organizations to adopt and adapt to new media? How does religiously related new media use interact or affect the offline practices of established religious organizations? Section IV: Theological Reflections The last section of the book provides theological reflections on the Internet, to forward the development of a theology of the Internet which is a budding field of research. Although practical perspectives and guidelines for Internet use have been published, a more thorough theological analysis of new media is missing. The need for theological clarification is apparent since web-enabled applications challenge churches with a number of difficult questions. Submission Details Please submit a 500-700 word abstract (including important and initial references) to the editors as an email attachment to <churchnewmedia(a)yahoo.com> no later than April 15, 2010. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by May 31, 2010, and will then be invited to submit a full paper to the editors. Final manuscripts should be no more than 6,500 words, including notes and references, prepared in APA style. Important Dates: April 15, 2010 Deadline for abstract submission May 31, 2010 Announcement of results and full paper invitations August 31, 2010 Submission of full papers Inquiries should be addressed to: Pauline Hope Cheong Associate Professor of Communication Hugh Downs School of Human Communication P.O.
