Focusing on questions involving cinema and popular media, *Kinephanos* encourages interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The journal’s primary interests are movies and popular TV series, video games, emerging technologies and fan cultures. The preferred approaches include cinema studies, communication theories, religion sciences, philosophy, cultural studies and media studies. Theme *Kinephanos*' second issue aims to explore cultural legitimation. One of the discourses in our late modernity era seeks to valorize many movements and phenomena dubbed “popular.” According to Pierre Bourdieu, cultural legitimization is a movement toward making one field autonomous, whether be its audience, or its economic foundations. However, this accreditation operates according to many strategies, oftentimes unique, oftentimes shared, but always drawing on wider social issues. One can think of remediation, as explained by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin: whether be it cinema as “filmed theater,” comic books as “graphic novels,” or video games as “interactive movies,” the same relationship of “homage and rivalry” is at stake with the prior, already established media and arts. We wish to publish articles presenting those moments where popular culture is valorized, while addressing the characteristic issues of this phenomenon, such as the question of aesthetics or the question of power relations. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: - Case studies: video games, popular music, Hollywood cinema, television, animation - Cultural legitimation and celebrity - Power and cultural legitimation - Internet and cultural legitimation - Academia and cultural legitimation - Adaptations and transmediality - Cult objects - Popular culture and its socio-economic context - Cultural industries’ histories While *Kinephanos* privileges publication of thematic issues, we encourage writers to submit articles exceeding the theme which will be published in each issue. The heated debates over its accuracy, anonymity, trust, vandalism and expertise only seem to fuel further growth of Wikipedia and its user base. Apart from leaving its modern counterparts Britannica and Encarta in the dust, such scale and breadth places Wikipedia on par with such historical milestones as Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia, the Ming Dynasty's Wen-hsien ta- ch' eng, and the key work of French Enlightenment, the Encyclopédie. The multilingual Wikipedia as digital collaborative and fluid knowledge production platform might be said to be the most visible and successful example of the migration of FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) principles into mainstream culture. However, such celebration should contain critical insights, informed by the changing realities of the Internet at large and the Wikipedia project in particular. The CPOV Research Initiative was founded from the urge to stimulate critical Wikipedia research: quantitative and qualitative research that could benefit both the wide user-base and the active Wikipedia community itself. On top of this, Wikipedia offers critical insights into the contemporary status of knowledge, its organizing principles, function, and impact; its production styles, mechanisms for conflict resolution and power (re-)constitution. The overarching research agenda is at once a philosophical, epistemological and theoretical investigation of knowledge artifacts, cultural production and social relations, and an empirical investigation of the specific phenomenon of the Wikipedia. Keynote: Lev Manovich (Professor, Visual Arts Department, UCSD). The application of new computational techniques and visualisation technologies in the Arts & Humanities are resulting in new approaches and methodologies for the study of traditional and new corpuses of Arts and Humanities materials, sometimes called the Digital Humanities. This new 'computational turn' takes the methods and techniques from computer science to create new ways of distant and close readings of texts (e.g. Moretti). This one-day workshop aims to discuss the implications and applications of what Lev Manovich has called 'Cultural Analytics' and the question of finding patterns using algorthmic techniques. Some of the most startling approaches transform understandings of texts by use of network analysis (e.g. graph theory), database/XML encodings (which flatten structures), or merely provide new quantitative techniques for looking at various media forms, such as media and film, and (re)presenting them visually, aurally or haptically. Within this field there are important debates about the contrast between narrative against database techniques, pattern-matching versus hermeneutic reading, and the statistical paradigm (using a sample) versus the data mining paradigm. Additionally, new forms of collaboration within the Arts and Humanities are emerging which use team-based approaches as opposed to the traditional lone-scholar. This requires the ability to create and manage modular Arts and Humanities research teams through the organisational structures provided by technology and digital communications (e.g. Big Humanities), together with techniques for collaborating in an interdisciplinary way with other disciplines such as computer science (e.g. hard interdisciplinarity versus soft interdisciplinarity). Papers are encouraged in the following areas: - Distant versus Close Reading - Database Structure versus Argument - Data mining/Text mining/Patterns - Pattern as a new epistemological object - Hermeneutics and the Data Stream - Geospatial techniques - Big Humanities - Digital Humanities versus Traditional Humanities - Tool Building - Free Culture/Open Source Arts and Humanities - Collaboration, Assemblages and Alliances - Language and Code (software studies) - Information visualization in the Humanities - Philosophical and theoretical reflections on the computational turn + Participation Requirements + Workshop participants are requested to submit a position paper (approx. 2000-5000 words) about the computational turn in Arts and Humanities, philosophical/theoretical reflections on the computational turn, research focus or research questions related to computational approaches, proposals for academic practice with algorithmic/visualisation techniques, proposals for new research methods with regard to Arts and Humanities or specific case studies (if applicable) and findings to date. Mobenzi is a software service that empowers people to earn money by completing simple tasks on their mobile phones. The Concept Mobenzi is a software service that empowers people to be rewarded for completing simple tasks on their mobile phones. These tasks involve certain types of problems that are difficult for a computer to solve without assistance from a real person – even someone without expert knowledge of the problem. We are seeking to uncover new applications for these ‘human intelligence tasks’ and build the systems to process them, so that we can create novel technology solutions and help thousands of poor people earn additional income. History Clyral is a software development company based just outside of Durban in South Africa. In 2006 we created Mobile Researcher to allow organisations to capture data in remote locations using standard mobile phones. We designed the software as a platform because we had many other application ideas that involved the completion of mobile forms. Pilot Project In 2009 we partnered with the Business Trust, through their Shared Growth Challenge Fund to extend the Mobile Researcher platform to cater for the completion of human intelligence tasks and to pilot the service with low income people in South Africa’s urban poverty nodes. Lots of times I can't get big ones to print And then there is the old problems of .doc>pdf and vice-versa (transgendered pdfs?) which was solved by a pill and potion -- freeware.
