ChatRoulette Study
by Alex Leavitt 01 Mar '10

01 Mar '10

To my esteemed Internet denizens, As part of the efforts of the Web Ecology Project ( http://webecologyproject.org) Tim Hwang and I have published an analysis of the community and culture of ChatRoulette. We would appreciate your input and criticism. The paper is available as a PDF here: http://www.webecologyproject.org/2010/03/chatroulette/ * <goog_1267455805262>ChatRoulette: An Initial Survey* *by Alex Leavitt <http://twitter.com/alexleavitt> & Tim Hwang<http://twitter.com/timhwang>, with Patrick Davison, Mike Edwards, Devin Gaffney, Sam Gilbert, Erhardt Graeff, Jennifer Jacobs, Dan Luxemburg, Kunal Patel, Mike Rugnetta, & Karina van Schaardenburg* *This paper represents an initial study of ChatRoulette.com<http://chatroulette.com/>, conducted between February 6th and 7th, 2010 by researchers in attendance at Web Ecology Camp III in Brooklyn, NY. We sampled 201 ChatRoulette sessions, noting characteristics such as group size and gender. We also conducted 30 brief interviews with users to inquire about their age, location, and frequency of ChatRoulette use.* *Summary* *• ChatRoulette represents an example of a probabilistic community: a community shaped by a platform which mediates the encounters between its users by eliminating lasting connections between them. * *• After ChatRoulette users become more acquainted with the system (ie., do not browse solely to explore), we predict a decrease in explicit content, an increase in the consolidation of content genres, and an increase in the formation of celebrity figures. * *• Our survey shows that ChatRoulette’s current community continues to consist of males age 18-24, concurrent with Alexa data.* --- Alexander Leavitt Research Specialist, Convergence Culture Consortium Comparative Media Studies, MIT http://doalchemy.org Twitter: @alexleavitt

Article/Paper reference organisational software

I would vote for Zotero. What drew me to it originally was that as an open platform you can also export data easily, which is not the case with EndNote. It's very useful for storing webpages and tagging them, attaching notes, etc. You can store everything on your computer (which I prefer) but there's also an online storage facility. One drawback, changing and adapting styles is not easy. It's also free. Cheers, Julian ++++++++++ Blog: www.julianhopkins.net Twitter: @julianhopkins Skype: julhop IM: jfprhopkins(a)hotmail.com

second call for papers: special issue on war, conflict and commemoration in the age of digital reproduction
by Adi Kuntsman 26 Feb '10

26 Feb '10

Digital Icons: Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media http://www.digitalicons.org/forthcoming/ **Call for papers for the Special Issue War, Conflict and Commemoration in the Age of Digital Reproduction ( Autumn 2010)** Wars, conflicts and commemoration occupy the minds of today's users of new media across the globe, especially those in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe: from digital accounts of 'wars on terror' to virtual museums of political terror under communism; from cyberwars against websites and databases to computer war games; from on-line anti-war organising to virtual memorials to WWII soldiers; from photo-and video- reporting on warfare in Kosovo, Chechnya, Gaza or Georgia to flash-mobs of political protest or racist incitement; from digitalised personal memories and family histories to YouTube clips featuring victorious presidential speeches. The aim of this special issue is to explore the ways wars and conflicts are mediated, commemorated, reported and discussed on the Internet as well as in other forms of new media, including mobile phones, digital broadcasting and computer games. What is the role of new media in understanding, representing, negotiating and remembering (or forgetting) war and terror? What is the status of testimony, evidence and reportage in the age of digital reproduction? What practices of memory do new information and communication technologies entail? What structures of feeling operate in on-line reports and debates around military operations and human suffering? How can digital mediations of conflict bring people and communities together, while tearing others apart? And lastly, how can the embodied, physical violence intensify in digital interactions, and how can it be resisted? This special issue of Digital Icons aims to create a forum for scholars working in the fields of war, conflict, commemoration, digital media, and new media, while simultaneously addressing linguistic, cultural, historical and political aspects of new media use in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe. We invite original articles that focus on one or more countries of the region, or on their diasporas. We also welcome theoretical essays, reflection by media practitioners on their own practices, contributions from artists and authors, and reviews of relevant projects, books and events. Deadline for submissions: 1 May 2010 Anticipated date of publication: October 2010 Please contact Adi Kuntsman warconflictcommemoration(a)googlemail.com or DI editors editor(a)digitalicons.org to discuss your submission. When submitting your work, please include the following information: a biographical statement (100-120 words in English) and an abstract/description of the submission (or the first paragraph of the essay if appropriate) (about 150 words in English).

Working paper on Twitter and live television
by Anstead Nicholas Dr (PSI) 26 Feb '10

26 Feb '10

Hi all, With apologies for cross-posting, I just wanted to share the link to a working paper that I have just co-authored with Ben O'Loughlin of Royal Holloway College, University of London. It starts to examine a sample of more than 40,000 tweets we gathered during a broadcast of BBC Question Time in the UK in October 2009. This episode was especially significant, as the programme featured Nick Griffin, leader of the far right British National Party, making it a highly controversial event. In the paper, Ben and I talk about what we term the emerging Viewertariat - a group of viewers who use new media technology to comment on and discuss television events in real time as they watch them. We start to attempt to understand how this group functions, as part of a wider remit to understand how political engagement occurs across mediums either simultaneously or with varying time lags. In the future, we plan to engage in a more detailed content analysis of this sample, as well as applying this method to other events, including the forthcoming UK General Election TV debates. If anyone has any feedback on the paper or suggestions for future development and collaborative/comparative studies, please do drop me an email. You can download the full paper from here (pdf link on my blog): http://bit.ly/9nha2J and the UEA press release on the paper is available here: http://www.uea.ac.uk/mac/comm/media/press/2010/feb/homepagenews/twitterques…. Due date is June 15, 2010 (please note, this is a hard deadline set by HICSS, not the minitrack organizers). /Caroline Haythornthwaite & Karine Barzilai-Nahon Call For Papers: Social Networking and Communities, HICSS 44 HAWAII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES Track: Internet and Digital Economy Minitrack: Social Networking and Community http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/ January 4-7, 2011 Papers due JUNE 15, 2010 (note this is a *hard* deadline) All submissions are made through the HICSS site. We would like to attract papers that address issues of online communities of practice, inquiry and interest created in the interest of political, educational, business, social and/or gaming pursuits, and with attention to how online community building and management contribute to success in the digital economy and society. At present, there is tremendous research interest in these topics, driven by the fact that these sociological phenomena are changing the way people work, play and socialize, and how they spend their time and money. Accordingly, billions of dollars are being spent by businesses and consumers on these technologies, and the rate of adoption has been phenomenal, while empirical and theoretical work on social and technical design, and economic and social outcomes lag behind. We call for empirical and theoretical papers that add to our understanding of the social, political, and economic landscape of communities and social networks at work, school, home, play and in society. Examples of the possible interdisciplinary topics of interest in these contexts include, but are not limited to the following: • Social, political and/or economic impact of social media • Communities as sociological phenomenon in the digital economy • Community development and community informatics • Design, development, and user studies of social media • Online communities of practice, inquiry or interest • Business models of Second Life • E-learning: structures, implementations, and practices • Serious leisure communities online • Organizational behavior of communities • Social network studies and analyses of online communities • Mobile applications, services and use for and by online communities • Case studies and topologies of online communities • Case studies and analyses of the rise and fall of social network sites and online communities • Theoretical models of virtual worlds • Advertising in online communities and social networks • Models for managing behavior in online communities • Behavior in online gaming communities • Models and cases of synergies and/or conflicts between real and virtual worlds • Diffusion and adoption of social networking applications and practices • Development of social networking applications and practices • Critical perspectives on social media and local and/or virtual community • Disruptive strategies of virtual worlds • Anti-social behavior in online social networks and communities • Legal and ethical issues in social networking and virtual worlds • Privacy and security issues Minitrack Co-chairs Caroline Haythornthwaite (primary contact) Professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Champaign, IL, 61820 Tel: (217) 244-7453 Email: haythorn(a)illinois.edu Karine Barzilai-Nahon Assistant Professor and Director, The Center for Information & Society The Information School University of Washington Mary Gates Hall, Room 370B, Box 352840 Seattle, WA 98195-2840 Tel: (206) 685-6668 Email: karineb(a)u.washington.edu IMPORTANT DEADLINES ABSTRACTS (optional) Authors may contact Minitrack Chairs for guidance and indication of appropriate content at anytime. You might consider Zotero, a free service developed by the Center for New Media and History at George Mason that works as Firefox extension. Great for marking and archiving resources you find online, plugins for OpenOffice and Word, nice sync/backup feature, and has options for sharing/collaboration. If you sync your local library with the Zotero server, you will be able to view your collection from your iphone (or other mobile device). http://www.zotero.org/ Daniel > On Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 4:16 AM, Dario Taraborelli < > d.taraborelli(a)surrey.ac.uk> wrote: > >> You can find several reviews of reference management software/services on >> AcademicProductivity: >> >> http://www.academicproductivity.com/category/reference-management/ >> >> Dario >> >> On 25 Feb 2010, at 12:12, Alexander Bohn wrote: >> >> > Hello all togehter. >> > >> > I use Mendeley https://www.mendeley.com >> > It's still Beta but you could use it for almost everything concerning >> reference organisation.
