i think the "reinforce their existence as subjects" argument has precedent. try looking at Sunden's point that, online, individuals "type themselves into being" (3). danah boyd has stressed this point when discussing social networking sites. the argument might indeed follow for other online content creation, such as product reviews. boyd quotes an 18 year old stating “If you’re not on MySpace, you don’t exist” (119). in the same paper boyd states that “there is an ethos that if it is possible to access a public expression, one should have the right to do so” (138). seems very relevant. boyd, danah. “Why Youth [heart] Social Network Sites: The Role of Networked Publics in Teenage Social Life." The rather old concept of human "exchange theory" which roxanne wrote up in "the network nation" was very good at expressing participation in discussion threads where when one wrote something the fact that they got replies encouraged them to contribute more comments. Exchange theory would also state that the reward of gaining status as an expert for the contributions made to dealing with problems would also be a coin of exchange. In networks of collaborative groups it is clear that a contribution will get payback based upon the number of other collaborators. We also found when in those days we could measure the time a person spent in a single conference or a message list that they would tend to sign on often enough to get like seven +- two new items. The more active the discussion the more frequent they would sign on. when there was much less they would wait to sign on for longer periods and this lead to the observation of critical mass needed to keep a discussion going. Also at some point information overload sets in when they cannot sign in often enough to keep up with the flow. This was in the paper that roxanne and i did some years back for cacm (i think 1981) on "information overload." In delphi one of the most important motivations to get professionals to participate is to make sure they know they are going to be collaborating with a peer group where they may get more feedback of useful information than they will have to put in. Sometimes we let participants know who is in the group even if it is anonymous with respect to entries. That is I feel a good motivation for professional message lists and when one starts getting too many requests for information verses contributions of information or too many announcements of paper requests i tend to lesson my activity in the message list. i did a study a year back on information seeking behavior of professionals in emergency management and as a result, i published recently through springer a paper on a recommender system design for communities of practice based upon some of the above areas including Delphi design. i can send it to anyone interested. The original study for NLM (on my website) was not allowed to incorporate any solutions to the information seeking behavior problems of emergency management professionals. But if you read the 60 page raw appendix of their actual text answers to our open ended questions the solutions become clear and in the paper i later published. The original inquiry was a one round delphi on information seeking behavior and problems using a snowball sampling and open ended text questions in a word file we sent people. Concur with denise about reputation building as a motivator for contributing, but not the whole story: -- giving to the collective whole: many of us have worked to build AoIR, for example. Wikipedia another great example -- desire to set the record straight. Every time I see some pundit say that social isolation is increasing, grrrrr I'm sure there are other things too. Call for Chapter Proposal—Submission Deadline March 1, 2010 For the Edited Collection Social Media Campaigns: Methods and Issues Edited by Jayne Witte, Gayle Pohl, Tom Hall, and Shing-Ling S. Chen, University of Northern Iowa To be published by Peter Lang Publishing OVERVIEW OF THIS EDITED COLLECTION With the emergence of social media (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.), practitioners are no longer limited to traditional means of campaign methods. Social media provide campaign practitioners new opportunities to construct a new kind of campaign that is more efficient and complex than what was previously possible using traditional approaches. With new methods of contact and dissemination, practitioners are able to construct integrated social networks and implement well-coordinated campaigns. Social networking environments thus call for a different methodological orientation on the part of the campaign practitioners. This different approach begets a myriad of methods and issues not generally addressed in existing texts, except perhaps in passing. Social Media Campaigns: Methods and Issues is a collection of essays by veteran social media campaign practitioners who provide: (1) testimonial illustrations as to how to effectively utilize various online social networking tools to implement campaigns, that is, the “dos” and “don'ts” of social media campaigns, may they be political or non-political, commercial or non-profit campaigns, and (2) discussions of critical issues encountered in social media campaigns. The former serves as a resource for teachers, students and practitioners who utilize online social networking tools for campaigning. The latter is designed to stimulate ongoing debates and creative ideas about a pioneering arena of research. In sum, the book is designed to make a distinctive contribution to the literature that addresses online research, as well as the fields of inquiry for traditional campaign methods (public relations, advertising, marketing, communication, journalism, sociology, psychology, education, medicine as well as related disciplines). The book is designed to be a required textbook for campaign methods classes, as well as a resource for practitioners, as it deals with methodological considerations in developing social media campaign. PROPOSAL SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Prospective authors are invited to submit chapter proposal of 200 – 500 words on or before March 1, 2010. In the proposal, please clearly specify: (1) the purpose and content of the proposed chapter, and (2) how the proposed chapter relates to the overall objectives of the book. VIDEO & STS: METHODOLOGIES AND METHODS http://events.unitn.it/sites/events.unitn.it/files/EASST_010_Track_10.pdf Despite the rapid technical developments and a general turn to the visual in the social sciences, video methodologies and methods are still not widely adopted for science and technologies studies (STS). Most researchers continue to rely on ‘traditional’ ethnographic or other qualitative research methods using other means, such as talk or writing. However, as the recent variety of video-based studies have shown, video technologies clearly offer exciting possibilities of capturing the dynamics and complexities in the field. As Macbeth (1990, p. 191) put it: “As a matter of faithfulness to the texture, temporal shape and material detail of the scenes they record, the video of filmic record provides remarkably uninterpreted renderings of the field.”1 But the reality of current STS seems to suggest otherwise. Why are video methodologies and methods not [yet] widely adopted in STS? This panel will contribute to the conference theme of “methodological approaches for investigating scientific and technological practices”. It is devised to explore to what extent video methodologies and methods can help capture and examine the socio-material practice and performance which are so central to the recent pragmatic and practice-based turn in STS since late 70s. We are especially interested in answering the following questions: * How are video methodologies and methods applied in different types of STS research? * What are the challenges of applying video-based methods in STS-like research (e.g., nuisances of using video technologies, field workers’ informed consent, interaction with the field workers, ethics of publishing video data)? * What are the solutions to socio-ethical issues in the employment of video methods? * What are the implications of video-based methods to STS research? * Is it possible to capture ‘where the action is’ on video, or is scientific and technological work too distributed, both spatially and temporally, to allow such capture?
