Let's Attack ACTA! *** Paris, Jan 25th 2009 - Negotiations on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) [1] will take place from January 26th to January 29th in Mexico. ACTA aims at controlling the Internet, while conveniently circumventing democratic processes. Unelected negotiators - carrying out the orders of the entertainment industries - are attacking the very essence of the Internet. Let's attack ACTA! Let's expose its negotiators so they face their responsibilities! *** - From Jan 26th to Jan 29th, representatives of a handful of countries (including the EU represented by the Commission) will meet in Mexico to decide the future of the Internet and other issues such as access to medicine. With no supervision from international organizations and no democratic oversight, conditions are ideal for entertainment lobbies to dictate their dream: enforcing a fundamentally unadapted copyright regime in order to control the Internet and access to knowledge. More than 80 NGOs from all over the world (including Consumers International, Reporters without Borders, the Free Software Foundation and the Electronic Frontier Foundation) already signed an open letter strongly opposing ACTA [2]. The last leaked analysis of the European Commission [3] unmasks the global intent of the text: imposing extra-judicial "voluntary" agreements between Internet service providers and rights holders to combat copyright infringements through "three strikes" schemes or automated content filtering or removal. To force Internet operators into accepting such access restrictions, ACTA will make them liable for the copyright infringements done by their users. "By creating legal uncertainty for the Internet operators, ACTA will force them to bend under the pressure of entertainment industries. Digital Culture & Education Call for Papers for Special Themed Issue: Beyond ‘new’ literacies Guest Editor: Dana J. Wilber Much of the work in literacy and digital technologies falls into the area of ‘new literacies’ (Lankshear and Knobel, 2006), a theoretical frame that defines literacies as new through tools and practices that previously did not exist. This special issue of Digital Culture & Education (DCE) seeks to reinvigorate and challenge approaches to the ‘new’ by drawing on existing and innovative models and approaches from outside of ‘new literacies’ to enrich this framework by focusing on the diverse roles digital literacy practices play in on and offline spaces (social networking, games, virtual worlds, etc.) as part of day-to-day public and private life. Specifically, the special issue seeks to expand the new literacies’ theoretical paradigm by asking: - How might we expand the idea of new literacies through fine-grained examinations of specific literacy practices with particular tools or technologies, like social networking, digital games, and multimodal design through different frames? - How can new perspectives, practices and/or theories (i.e. discourse analysis, feminism, Queer, gaming, literary theory, or post-structuralist) provide additional insights around the congruencies and/or tensions between literacies and digital technologies across institutional and non-institutional contexts? The concern of Beyond new literacies is to highlight research that develops a theoretical dialogue between literacies and technologies, as more than ‘new’, through either applied research or theoretical intervention by: - Making use of a wide variety of theoretical lenses to analyze and understand how literacies and literacy practices operate within virtual worlds or through specific digital tools. - Analyzing the digital literacy and technology practices of users through a variety of methodological avenues (including discourse analysis, case study, oral history, experimental, mixed design, rhizoanalysis, etc.) - Examining situated practices in everyday use, integrating issues of on and offline definitions and spatial distinctions We encourage submissions from scholars, researchers, and practitioners from around the globe, working in areas such as literacy and education, gaming, new media, sociocultural studies of technologies, literary theory and technology, fan studies, adolescents and digital media, and media and identity. Hitler , Claude Lévi-Strauss, and the fading legitimacy of academic institutions

This one (courtesy of http://criticalcommons.org) is a rant about the rise of digital scholarship [snip]. The German dictator, now reborn as a grotesque Internet meme, highlights the existing cultural divide between the up-and-coming Internet-savvy « junior » scholars and the ageing generation of paper-intensive, book-prone professors and researchers. Bitterly, he claims academic teaching is « a dying profession » [snip] « We were great once », cries Hitler, voicing the disappointment of old time academics. « A proud institution. We controlled knowledge: we told everyone what and how to think. Now () we spend our time propping up our fading legitimacy ». The turning point in the video seems to be when, with trembling hand, the Führer removes his glasses and hisses: « Anyone who has ever consulted the Wikipedia, leave the room, now! ». There, a line is drawn between traditional scientific institutions and digital ones. The online encyclopedia, for better or for worse, epitomizes the spirit of open knowledge that is slowly digging a ditch around academic ivory towers. A personal anecdote might help further develop this point. On November 3rd, 2009, 3:34 PM, via a French mailing list, I received an email from the president of the EHESS, the academic institution I happen to work for. The email stated that, aged 100, « our colleague, Claude Lévi-Strauss » died. Assuming that the news was first hand, appealing to the larger public and coming from a reliable source, I decided to put it on Wikipedia France. So I edited the page Claude Lévi-Strauss introducing the date of decease. I usually contribute to the English-speaking part of Wikipedia, so this time I didnt bother logging in. I was assuming my IP address (I was writing from my office) would somehow vouch for me. This move ended up backfiring. As soon as I clicked on Save changes, a message popped up on my screen warning that my IP address was recognized as one of the EHESS and was thus considered suspicious. An editor would have to validate my changes. And the editor did not: he or she dismissed the piece of information as unsubstantiated and the edit didnt even hit the revision history log. The « appeal to authority » (me writing from the very same institution where Claude Lévi-Strauss had taught) didnt seem to count. Of course the page was eventually modified soon afterwards by somebody who made the correct link to the newswire of the Agence France Press. [snip] The academic ex-cathedra (in this case we might say the « ex-IP address ») attitude is questioned, in a healthful and productive way. Unfortunately, too often it is replaced by a media-ridden viral logic as a new source of intelligence. What is at stake here is not only the status of academics today as intellectual authorities, but the way objective knowledge is validated. Again, the Claude Lévi-Stauss article in Wikipedia is a good example. As of today, no clear consensus has been reached on the exact date of his death somewhere between October 30th and November 3rd. Who do we trust? Insiders are, in this case unreliable, because they are colleagues of the deceased anthropologist, academics used since their prime to « hide » knowledge from the populace. Outsiders, are probably not close enough to Lévi-Strausss friends and family, but are more reliable as to the way they collect information, as well as to the way they deliver it. They log in, modify the page without messing up with the code, explain the edits they introduced, take part to the conversation, and so on. [snip] Both the Hitler parody and the Claude Lévi-Strauss Wikipedia anecdote point towards a reconfiguration of the « two cultures » controversy as outlined by C. P. Snow. If, back in the 1950s, the cultural divide put natural sciences and humanities on the opposite sides of the knowledge spectrum, nowadays with government and industry increasing demand for transdisciplinary research this intellectual chasm is progressively replaced by a technological one".
