Michael and Jacob, you have a point. But I meant good news for researchers not users. The ethics is debatable, indeed. Sharon, I don't think this has anything to do with how Facebook looks now, it just means making this public and official. Univ. of Amsterdam, M.A. in New Media & Digital Culture: Call for Applications
by Richard Rogers 10 Feb '10

10 Feb '10

International M.A. in New Media & Digital Culture – University of Amsterdam Call for Applications – Fall 2010 admission deadline: 1 April 2010 Overview The International M.A. in New Media & Digital Culture (NMMA) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is accepting applications for 2010-2011 academic year. The NMMA is a one-year residence program undertaken in English at UvA in the heart of Amsterdam. Students become actively engaged in critical Internet culture, with an emphasis on new media theory and aesthetics, including theoretical materialist traditions and practical information visualization trends. Our permanent faculty are recognized experts in their fields, who are committed to their students. The program admits approximately forty to fifty students per year, classes are no larger than 20, and the faculty-to-student ratio is 1:10. Curriculum 1st Semester: students follow a course in academic blogging, led by critical Internet theorist and tactical media practitioner Geert Lovink. Their entries form the internationally noted Masters of Media site, http://mastersofmedia.hum.uva.nl/, regarded as a top blog for new media research and nominated for a Dutch award for best educational blog. The concurrent new media theories course focuses on classic texts by innovators from Alvin Turing to Tim Berners-Lee. The final first semester class, Digital Methods, given by the program Chair, Richard Rogers, trains students in novel techniques for Internet research, http://www.digitalmethods.net/. 2nd Semester: the student chooses between courses on digital aesthetics, new media politics or information visualization. The digital aesthetics course is theoretically inclined in the traditions of art history and visual culture, and the new media politics class is concerned with the transformations the Internet is bringing to politics. Information visualization is a joint theoretical-practical collaboration between designers, programmers and analysts, where the product is an online tool, digital visualization or interactive graphic. The course of study concludes with the M.A. thesis, an original analysis that makes a contribution to the field, undertaken with the close mentorship of a faculty supervisor. The graduation ceremony includes an international symposium with renowned speakers. Graduates of the NMMA have gained an analytical and practical skill-set that enables diverse careers in research and practice-related areas that make use of the Internet, including business, government, NGOs, and creative industries that are evolving with emerging new media. Our graduates include Lotte Meijer, winner of a Webby award, and Eva Kol, whose MA thesis, Hyves, was published by Kosmos in 2008 and sold over 5000 copies its first year in print. Student Life The quality-of-living in Amsterdam ranks among the highest of international capitals. UvA’s competitive tuition (see below) and the ubiquity of spoken English both on and off-campus make the program especially accommodating for foreign students. The city’s many venues, festivals, and other events provide remarkably rich cultural offerings and displays of technological innovation. The program has ties to organizations including PICNIC, the Waag Society, Institute for Network Cultures, Virtueel Platform, Netherlands Institute for Media Art, govcom.org, and other cultural institutions, where internship opportunities and collaborations may be available, in consultation with the student’s thesis supervisor. Students attend and blog, twitter or otherwise capture local new media events and festivals, while commenting as well on larger international issues and trends pertaining to new media. The quality of student life is equally to be found in the university’s lively and varied intellectual climate. NMMA students come from North and South America, Africa, Asia and across Europe and from academic and professional backgrounds including journalism, art and design, engineering, the humanities and social sciences. The International M.A. in New Media is a digital humanities program of study. Faculty Richard Rogers, Professor and Chair. Web epistemology, Digital methods. Publications include Information Politics on the Web (MIT Press, 2004/2005), awarded American Society for Information Science and Technology’s 2005 Best Information Science Book of the Year Award, and the End of the Virtual (U Amsterdam P, 2009). Successful virtual idea teams through “Elective Leadership”- Today, innovation and ideas are generated through cross-functional teams of peers. The peers are experts in their field and they have to work together as a team, frequently even as a virtual team. Elective leadership is an approach how leadership in such a team can be implemented to increase the success of idea generation teams. Ralf Friedrich, lecturer at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and trainer and coach for project teams, launched an experiment for Virtual Teamwork. Curious voluntary participants are welcome and can find more information here: www.gepros.com/vtr The background of the experiment: The business world is changing rapidly and with this change new ways of organising work are being established. In the area of idea generation, more work is done through virtual teams (Chudoba, Katherine ).Virtual idea generation teams are teams which cross several boundaries, such as geographic, temporal, and organizational boundaries and primarily employ telecommunication and information technologies to accomplish a common task (Müthel and Högl, 2008). More and more companies work in so-called onsite/offshore organizations where some team members are located in Europe and other team members are located in low cost countries. These virtual software development teams are tasked to develop complex software systems. The team members of these teams do not see each other and in order to master the project have to learn virtual work practices. Current virtual teamwork practices require different competencies and skills from the team members (Wong and Burton, 2000). The approach promotes a team leadership approach called “elective leadership”. Instead of management selecting a leader for such a team, the team elects a leader and, if necessary, re-elects another leader, if the leader failed in his or her leadership role. Team performance depends on the motivation, skills and competencies of its members on how to work in a virtual environment. All the above authors describe concepts where basically peer groups provide feedback to each other to increase the performance of the learning group or project team. However, the introduction of formal team leadership is not considered. In a peer group, all members are on the same hierarchical level and have the same rights and duties. Elective leadership implements a leader and leadership responsibilities. The benefits of the elective leadership model is to have a person in charge of implementing important virtual team processes. It is recommended to focus on two virtual team processes in particular: the get-to-know-each-other process and the feedback process. Re: [Air-L] Most of use Methods; few study Methodology
by Murray Turoff 10 Feb '10

10 Feb '10

A methodology is a collection of methods having some application or philosophical basis. qualitative methods of evaluation express a methodological approach that is contrasted often and sometimes fought over with respect to quantitative evaluation methods There are very different methodological approaches to learning for example and a lot of methods for learning under each learning methodology. there is along history of fights in Information Systems over what are the more appropriate methodologies. I think the best work on methodologies for learning in IS is C. W. Churchman's book on the "design of inquiry systems" where he classifies inquiry processes (or the design of information systems) according to the degree to which the user accepts a given philosophy of what is truth or evidence for a truth: Leibnitz, Locke, hegel, Kant, and Singer. Under each of these "methodologies" you have very different methods for designing and inquiry system using methods from various scientific areas like the physical sciences, the social sciences, the humanities, and engineering. Dealing with methogologies is a much more challanging problem than dealing with methods. It is like having to have a blueprint for building something using different tools and materials. Some of us find it easier to use the same tool for everything, my tool/method bias has always been Delphi! Some build models, do cost benefit studies, use surveys, do experiments, others do interviews, etc. the field you came from often indoctrinates you in the current acceptable set (methodology) of methods and does not always explore outside the boundary of the current paradigm. There is a picture on my website of a painting from 1572 that expresses this paradox of interdisciplinary research and studies. The Vienna fine art museum gave me permission to use it in a paper and on my website. If you click on it you can get a large view of the painting. -- Distinguished Professor Emeritus Information Systems, NJIT homepage: http://is.njit.edu/turoff

====== 2nd CALL FOR PAPERS ====== W I K I S Y M 2 0 1 0 The International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration http://wikisym.org/ws2010/Call+for+Papers July 7-8-9 in Gdansk, Poland. Co-located with Wikimania 2010 (Intl. Conference on Wikimedia Foundation projects, http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org) Peer-reviewed and archived in the ACM Digital Library. SUMMARY WikiSym, the International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration, will be held this summer in Gdansk, Poland. Starting this year, WikiSym aims to explicitly broaden its scope, exploring not only the thriving wiki community, but also other open movements and open collaboration initiatives. This includes related areas such as open online communities, collaborative creation of multimedia content (with or without wikis), and open journalism and publishing, just to list a few examples. Furthermore, our goal is to establish WikiSym as a venue for the exchange of information, experiences and practices among an interdisciplinary audience, including researchers, practitioners, industry representatives and experts with a wide variety of different backgrounds. As a result, WikiSym has established 3 complementary tracks to merge the contributions from such a diverse community: * Wiki track: Focused on research in wiki technology, wiki websites, wiki communities, and in general any kind of initiative pivoting around wiki software. * Industry track: This new track will focus on the specific needs of enterprises and private companies interested in sharing and promoting their experiences around wikis and open collaboration projects/products/initiatives. * Open collaboration track: This track is a dedicated venue for sharing research results and experiences in initiatives that may not be built specifically on wiki software, but share the "wiki way" of organization. These may include open collaborations, open communities, and open movements that allow the interchange of ideas and contributions from participants with a range of interests and motivations. Research manuscripts may be sent to any of these tracks. However, submitting the same manuscript to more than one track at the same time is not allowed. Therefore, please select the most appropriate track for the topic covered in your manuscript before submitting. IMPORTANT DATES * March 7th: Submission deadline for research papers. * March 21st: Submission deadline for Doctoral Symposium proposals, posters, demonstrations, workshops, panels, tutorials. * May 4th: Notification of acceptance for research papers. * May 11th: Notification of acceptance for Doctoral Symposium proposals, posters, workshops, tutorials, panels. * July 7-9: WikiSym 2010! TOPICS OF INTEREST: WIKI TRACK * Wiki user experiences, usability, and discourse analysis * Reputation systems and quality assurance processes * Scalability -- social and technical * Wiki technologies and implementations * Translation and multilingual wiki content * Educational applications * Wikis for non-textual media (images, video, audio) * Content dynamics and wiki evolution * Wiki archiving and versioning * Wiki administration: dealing with abuse and resolving conflict * Wikis and the semantic web, knowledge management and tacit knowledge * Wikis for small audiences (departmental and family wikis) * Legal issues (copyright, licensing) * Visualization of wiki structure TOPICS OF INTEREST: INDUSTRY TRACK * Business opportunities around wikis and open collaboration * Best practices to adopt wikis and open collaboration in industry * Information disclosure: practices and experiences * Community building and support * Open publishing and open licensing in the industry * Wikis and open collaboration entrepreneurship * Coopetition: best practices * Interaction and synergies between industries and open communities * Open innovation: strategies and experiences for leaders/followers * Promotion, support and funding of open collaboration initiatives * Knowledge management TOPICS OF INTEREST OPEN COLLABORATION TRACK * Social software for collaboration and work group processes * Open online communities * Technologies for networked collaboration * Social interactions on the web * Open and citizen journalism * Social networks * Collaborative content creation * Distributed development of software * Cooperation for problem resolution * Information disclosure strategies * Open call working environments * Crowdsourcing and information synthesis * Collaborative multimedia collections * Distributed content categorization/tagging * Open publishing * Commons projects and repositories * Distributed selection of content RESEARCH PAPERS Research papers present integrative reviews or original reports of substantive new work: theoretical, empirical, or in the development or deployment of novel systems. We encourage emphasizing lessons learned and providing a clear concise message to the audience about the relevance of the work. The paper must place your work in context within the field, citing related work and indicating clearly what aspects of the work are new. Research papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee to meet rigorous academic standards of publication. They should be written in English and must not exceed 10 pages (for full papers) or 4 pages (for short papers). Papers will be reviewed both with respect to conceptual quality and clarity of presentation. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the conference in order to present the paper. Accepted submissions will be published in the WikiSym proceedings and archived in the ACM Digital Library. Submitted papers should use the ACM SIG Proceedings Format, see: http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM The Doctoral Symposium is an interactive forum for doctoral students to receive present and discuss their doctoral work. Students who are at least one year away from dissertation completion are invited to submit to the Doctoral Symposium. Students beginning their research are especially invited to attend. To submit a proposal send a 2-3 page description of your dissertation research, including: * A description of your work * The goals---what contributions will your research generate? * The approach---what is being performed to achieve the goals? How will results be validated? Additionally, your adviser must send a brief statement of your dissertation progress to date and a statement of recommendation to the Doctoral Symposium chair. WORKSHOPS Workshops provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to discuss and learn about topics that require extended engagement such as new systems, research methods, standards and formats. A workshop should require participants to engage with each other for at least half a day. For shorter sessions, please consider WikiSym's open space format. A workshop proposal should consist of approximately two pages describing what you intend to do and how your session will meet the criteria described above. It should include a concise abstract, proposed time frame (half-day, full-day) and one-paragraph biographies of all people relevant to the submission. Workshop proposals will be reviewed and selected for their interest to the community. Each workshop will be allocated a half-day or a full-day and a room. PANELS Panels provide an interactive forum for bringing together people with interesting points of view to discuss compelling wiki issues. Panels involve participation from both the panelists and audience members in a lively discussion. Proposals for panels should consist of approximately two pages describing what you intend to do and how your session will meet the criteria described above. It should include a concise abstract and one-paragraph biographies of all panelists. A panel submission will be reviewed and selected for their interest to the community. Each panel will be given a 90-minute time slot. POSTERS Poster presentations enable researchers to present late-breaking results, significant work in progress, or work that is best communicated in conversation. WikiSym's lively poster sessions let conference attendees exchange ideas one-on-one with authors, and let authors discuss their work in detail with those attendees most deeply interested in the topic. Poster proposals may describe original research, engineering, or experience reports. Submissions should consist of a two-page extended abstract outlining the content of the poster. Successful applicants will be invited to display a poster, 1x2m in size, at a special plenary session of the Symposium. DEMONSTRATIONS Wikis are intended to be used, and no format is better suited for demonstrating the utility of new wiki research and technology than showing and using it. If you would like to demonstrate new features or products, this is the place! Demonstrations give presenters an opportunity to show running systems and gather feedback. Demo submissions will be reviewed based on their relevance to the community. A submission should be one page in length, with a title and a short description of the demo. The description should include what you plan to demonstrate, what you hope to get out of demoing, and how the audience will benefit. A short note of any special technical requirements may be included.
