Apologies for cross-posting *Call for Abstracts on the Politics of Digital Media in the Balkans and the Middle East.* Editors: Helga Tawil-Souri (New York University) and Zala Volcic (University of Queensland) We invite abstract submissions for an edited book on the creation, dissemination, interpretation, and role of digital media for political purposes in the Balkans and the Middle East. The Balkan and Middle East contexts provide interesting case studies because of their overlapping patterns of national and regional identification combined with the tensions these create. The overall goal of the edited volume will be to consider the relationship between a wide array of internet uses and forms of political deliberation, taking into consideration both the ways in which interactive media help to foster deliberation, discussion, and the coordination of collection action, and the ways in which they may thwart public sphere ideals of rational critical deliberation and public accountability. Our intent is to provide an overview of the spectrum of political uses of new media in these two regions. Contributors may come from a range of disciplinary and methodological perspectives, attending to how political groups, practices, and communicative genres are underwritten and sustained via engagement with digital technology, as well as to how the political realm itself is transformed in the age of digital media. Relevant topics include but are not limited to the following: - The political uses of digital media - The uses of digital media for purposes of organizing protest and dissent and for the construction of forums for political deliberation. - How activists and (political) groups have used the internet to hold state authorities accountable or challenge them, or to publish and circulate information. - The creation, dissemination and/or interpretation of digital media content by communities and individuals for political purposes - The kinds of politics that are created/expressed in the digital media environment - How mediated expressions and spaces connect to politics ‘on the ground’ - The kinds of political challenges that arise from digital media use in the regions - The shifting relationship between digital media and journalism - How population groups use the internet to connect with one another across national divisions (for example Serbs living in Bosnia, Serbia, and Montenegro; Palestinians living in Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria). - Chapters may focus on different forms of digital media and spaces: internet cafes, social networking sites, bulletin boards, blogs, twitter, wikipedia, youTube, listservs, websites and other digital/social media. - Chapters may focus on one national context or sub-context, or may be comparative in scope. - For the purposes of this project, the relevant geographic range of the Balkans and the Middle East includes the following: Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, Israel, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen. - We particularly welcome contributions from scholars from the relevant regions. Please send a *short bio, a publication list,* and a *500 word abstract* detailing the topic of your article, the overall context, your material, methodology, and theoretical argument by *March 1, 2010*. Of course the use of an image by a Media (Big or 'Citizen') as an element in a piece of commercial, or even non-commercial journalism is an issue. Leaving aside the lack of professionalism as well as the legality, here the issue is one of using an image (without consent) because the image's 'meaning' (sic) is needed for the story. The question I am working through is what happens when the image(s) 'used' (in a non-commercial, critical 'artwork') are being included not for what they signify as an individual image but because they are part of a distributed stream or flow where. It is the stream of media that is being brought in that is the subject. IFIP e-Government Conference (EGOV) 2010 29 August -- 2 September 2010; Lausanne, Switzerland (co-organised with ePart 2010) www.egov-conference.org<http://www.egov-conference.org/> Call for Papers The Europe-based Annual International IFIP e-government conference is one of three core conferences, which present the state of the art in the study domains of eGovernment and eGovernance. Over the years, through the organisation of its Europe-based conferences, the EGOV community has provided important guidance for research and development in this fast-moving domain of study. The different conferences thereby play an important role. This time for the first time, the conference will be a full IFIP working conference organised by the IFIP working group 8.5 (pending IFIP approval). The IFIP e-government conference b rings together leading researchers and professionals from across the globe and from a number of disciplines. Over the years, the interest in this domain of study has steadily increased. The 2009 EGOV conference - within the DEXA conference cluster - has attracted more than 130 participants from 32 countries including developing countries, with 35 contributions in completed research, 25 contributions in ongoing research, 7 projects contributions and 3 workshops. eGovernment research has demonstrated its relevance to practice and consequently has influenced and even shaped government strategies and implementations. Conversely, eGovernment practice has inspired eGovernment research. A wide range of topics has received scholarly attention. In recent years, the assessment and evaluation of eGovernment projects, the foundations of eGovernment as a research discipline, integration and interoperation in government, and the role of information and communication technology for developme nt rank among leading topics on the research agenda. Topics at the IFIP e-government conference 2010 include but are not limited to: * Foundations of eGovernment and eGovernance research * Future directions in research and practice of ICT in the public sector * Research theories and frameworks for public sector modernization with the support of ICT * Research methods, method integration and techniques * Designing and assessing systems for the public sector: innovative cases and systems * ICT usage, acceptance and performance of technology-supported public sector activities: methods and contemporary case analyses * Innovation management, change management and complexity management in shaping public sector advancements * Benefits management in the context of eGovernment * Mass collaboration of stakeholders in government modernization: participative governance and policy modelling * Stakeholder-driven public sector reengineering * Mobile services and methods in government * Cloud computing and social networks in the public sector * Information preservation, information management, and information access * Trust and privacy in eGovernment * Open source in eGovernment * Emergency and disaster response management * Retaining public sector experiences * Education, training courses, and curricula The IFIP e-government conference 2010 hosts four distinct formats of contributions: * Completed research papers (max 12 pages, published in Springer LNCS) * Ongoing research and innovative projects (max 8 pages, published in Trauner) * Workshops and panels on pertinent issues * PhD colloquium submission. These formats encourage scientific rigor and discussions of state of the art in the study domain, but also welcome innovative research approaches, work in progress, and studies of practical eGovernment or eGovernance projects, as well as reports on systems implementation. Prior to the conference (August 29 and 30) a PhD student colloquium will be held providing doctoral students with an international forum for presenting their work, networking opportunities and cross-disciplinary inspiration. Posters, Demos and Videos: July 16, 2010 The ASIST Annual Meeting is the main venue for disseminating research centred on advances in the information sciences and related applications of information technology. This year's conference is stepping away from tradition and re-inventing our premier conference in the guise of an innovative "ASIST 2.0." ASIST 2010 will consist of six tracks, each with its own program and reviewing committee to ensure that the conference meets your high expectations for standards and quality. Please note the important changes in format and content, and plan your submissions accordingly. Track 1 - Information Behaviour Track 2 - Knowledge Organization Track 3 - Information Systems, Interactivity and Design Track 4 - Information and Knowledge Management Track 5 - Information Use Track 6 - Information and Society: Economic, Political, Social Issues Because each of these tracks represents a generic aspect of information science, each may be focused by additional elements.
