Net neutrality book and talk: Brussels 18 March
by chris marsden 13 Feb '10

13 Feb '10

May be of interest? BOOK TITLE: Net Neutrality: Towards a Co-Regulatory Solution (2010, Bloomsbury Academic) Christopher T. Marsden, also Creative Commons download from http://bit.ly/buQqi7 - anyone can download, remix and repost the file (CC 3.0 licence - Non-commercial Remix). Chris Marsden argues for a 'Middle Way' on net neutrality, a problem of consumer and media policy without easy answers that cannot be left to self-regulated market actors. 'Net neutrality is the subject of regulatory decisions in Canada and the United States, and legislation in the European Union, but the details of enforcement remain vague if not obscure. Based on his new book on the subject and those recent decisions, Chris Marsden argues that we should not entrench ‘Lex Monopolium’ at the expense of an open Internet, nor is the choice that drastic. Innovation and investment can be encouraged by relatively light touch co-regulatory transparency principles, backed up by a regulator with sufficient comprehension and research into the issues and sharp teeth to make a real political commitment to intervene where economic or social interests dictate. Network neutrality may be a slogan that covers many concerns about the future of the Internet, but it certainly provides an excellent platform to create this wider and better informed discussion.' ‘Fascinating to read, thoroughly researched and testing the paths to the future of the Internet.’ Dr Herbert Ungerer, Former Deputy Director General, DG COMP European Commission During lunchtime on Thursday 18 March, Authors@Google are pleased to have Chris Marsden over to present his book on Net Neutrality. Exploring Childhood Studies conference announcement
by Patrick Cox 13 Feb '10

13 Feb '10

Exploring Childhood Studies, A Graduate Student Conference Rutgers University, Camden Registration is now open! The Graduate Student Organization of the Department of Childhood Studies at Rutgers University-Camden proudly announces its first graduate student conference to be held April 09, 2010 on the Camden, New Jersey campus. The field of childhood studies engages in both theoretical and empirical study of children and childhood within historical, contemporary, interdisciplinary, multi-cultural, state, national, and global contexts. The multi-disciplinary nature of the field is one of its greatest strengths and the core of its remarkable potential for scholarly advancement, but also leaves the field open for exploration and interrogation, and its borders difficult, if not impossible, to define. The Exploring Childhood Studies conference proposes defining Childhood Studies by doing childhood studies. Papers will investigate childhood as a construct, children as a category, and the child as a real living human. The central focus of the 36 finalized papers will also be to interrogate the field of Childhood Studies itself. These 36 papers will be presented by graduate students from around the world, ranging across disciplines as widely as the field itself. Multi-disciplinary panels will center around the following themes: * Space and Place * Play * Girls and Identity * Outsider Identities * Poverty * Migration * Rights * Children and Nation * Law * The Care of Kids * Science Registration for The Exploring Childhood Studies conference is $15.00 and includes light breakfast, full lunch and reception. I'm working in the area of privacy on harvesting social networking data in Canada. Does anyone know of any published research on Blippy? Or any tools that extract Blippy data the same way Twitter /Facebook data gets harvested? Any other related sites like Blippy that you know of would also be useful, as well as tools for harvesting. ----------------------------------------- Tracy Ann Kosa tracyann.kosa(a)uoit.ca
