We are calling for proposals that explore, critique and extend this theme as well as for proposals on any other relevant themes to Communication Studies. History Group: For the first time this year, we will be hosting a day of panels (June 1) focusing on the historical study of communications. Proposals concerning all topics pertinent to the historical study of communication(s), media, technology and key thinkers in communication studies are welcome. These sessions will be jointly hosted by the CCA and the Media and Communication History group of the Canadian Historical Association. During the conference, we will host a meeting to gauge interest in establishing a more formal History Interest Group (HIG) within the CCA. TRUTH TO POWER: PUBLIC INTELLECTUALS IN AND OUT OF ACADEME Edited by Silvia Nagy-Zekmi and Karyn Hollis Villanova University Under contract Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholar Publishing [1]http://www.c-s-p.org/ We are searching for articles to accompany the essays we have already assembled for this volume which presents new scholarship on the role of the intellectual in society and specifically in academe. Intellectuals have been negotiating access to public discourse for centuries, but never have their opinions been more crucial to the public good. According to Edward Said, the main function of the intellectual is to "speak the truth to power" (hence our title) and to be "a witness to persecution and suffering, supplying a dissenting voice in conflicts with authority." That these voices, however, are often drowned out in the media fray or are absent altogether, cries out for public deliberation itself. Our book provides one arena for this essential deliberation. Essays included address such notions as the decline of American public intellectuals and their entrapment between Academe and the "real" world as well as between the private and the public spheres. In an era of a worldwide political and economic crisis, these concerns are timelier than ever. We are looking for essays that address these general topics or more specific questions, such as how can the voices of scholars and erudite thinkers penetrate the globalized, corporate media? And how do media receive and represent the contribution of intellectuals to the academic and public spheres? Our volume addresses the transition from the restrictive Bush era to the more open public discourse under the Obama administration and explores possible answers to these questions with a special focus on the humanities. Abstract submission deadline: 15 March 2010. http://events.unitn.it/en/easst010 ************************************************************************************************************** TRACK: DIGITAL GAME PLAY AS SOCIOTECHNICAL PRACTICE The Digital Game industry has become one of the fastest growing, innovative and globalised industries in advanced Western economies and Digital Games have become a key cultural artefact and leisure practice in contemporary societies. Developing out of the American military industrial and academic complex in the 1970s the study of Digital Games design and play is the study of a range of sociotechnical practices and the negotiations between a range of human and non-human actors operating within systems of rules. The complexity of these relationships brings forth a series of questions that can be investigated using Science and Technology Studies approaches. However, to date games studies, with few exceptions, have failed to adopt STS approaches and the STS community has largely ignored this area of study. This track seeks to develop the relationship between the game studies community and the STS community. Several research questions can be used to guide this: What STS theories can be used to understand Digital Games as sociotechnical phenomenon? Is the concept of practice and the practice-based approach useful to investigate Digital Games? Is there a relationship between power as inscribed and imposed by artefacts and the technical dimensions of Digital Games? What rules are inscribed into Digital Games technologies and what social worlds do these rules describe? What contribution can the study of Digital Games make to the STS discipline at large? And what contribution can an STS approach make to game studies? Can we foresee an after-method approach for Digital Games? We invite papers that tackle the sociotechnical dimensions of Digital Games and address some of the questions outlined above. Contributions might include (but are not restricted to): • Digital Games as material semiotic artefacts • Digital Games as sociotechnical assemblages • The mess of digital games • Innovation in game design as actor-networking and social shaping • Digital Game design and/or play as performance and practice • Disruptive sociotechnical users’ practices (e.g. hacking, modding) • The scripting of gendered gaming practices • Governance and regulation of gaming practices Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be sent by email (following website instructions: http://events.unitn.it/en/easst010/abstract-submission) by 2010 March 15th. Digital mediascapes have also been of particular interest to scholars of gender and sexuality for their potential to transform some gendered, racial, and sexual power structures while reaffirming, and often violently reinforcing, others. This special issue of Journal of Middle Eastern Women’s Studies aims to bring feminist and queer analysis of media and communication technologies (the Internet, mobile phones, surveillance technologies, digital television, and telecommunication) to the field of the Middle East as both a geo-cultural space and a political entity. Our intention is to examine the intersections, tensions, and co-constitutions of queer sexualities and communication technologies; queerness as a form of digitalized affect and as a political practice; mediated violence and violence of mediation; new technological frontiers and frontiers of identities; and practices of everyday use and digitalized imaginaries. We hope to explore these and other phenomena as they emerge in Middle Eastern countries and communities and their diasporas. In recent years, much work has focused on media in the Middle East, and gender/sexuality in the Middle East; however, there is a paucity of scholarship on the intersection of these fields. Still less work has emphasized queering as a political metaphor in relation to the field of Middle East Studies. The aim of this special issue is to acknowledge the utility of a postcolonial queer critique as applied to this region and its diasporas. We are soliciting work that engages with the intersection of media and sexuality with reference to the Middle East. Possible topics thus include: Surveillance, war on terror The policing of sexuality Orientalism in new media cultures Governmentality, biopolitics, and the Middle East Sexuality and media censorship Media technologies (e.g., YouTube, mobile phones, bluetooth, picture/video messaging) and queerness Queer and/or social networking websites (e.g., Facebook, MySpace) Queer Middle Eastern diasporas in cyberspace HIV/AIDS-related online communities Homophobia LGBT and NGO activism Drag, cross-dressing, butch/femme identities, other queer subjectivities Gay imperialism We welcome abstracts of articles to be considered for inclusion in this special volume. I agree for the most part with the points that Matt has argued, but I wanted to address some specific comments from Professor Rehak. I would argue that as an archaeologist it is imperative that we are able to communicate with a very broad audience and exercise considerable media savvy in the meantime. Trying to generalize for a fractious and curmudgeonly discipline, we are tired of seeing the media get stories about the past so outrageously wrong that we are teaching ourselves to communicate through social media. We can't just leave it to the journalists and bloggers, we have to be public intellectuals who can explain our finds to anyone who cares to listen. In our program we have a required public outreach component where we go into the public schools, community centers, and even the local prisons to teach archaeology. We've been extending this outreach onto the internet whenever possible, going beyond just isolated webpages and into blogs, flickr, tumblr, twitter, you name it. While I'm sure I'm not the next Carl Sagan of the archaeological world, I do try to engage with a public with stories about the complexity and diversity of the past, rather than tell them a "dumbed down" metanarrative that they often seem hungry to hear. Sadly, I'm afraid we do have a cultural theory column in USA Today--it just happens to be the latest, greatest evolutionary psychology "break-through" that gives us yet another just-so story. #bitteranthropologist So, uh, hello Association of Internet Researchers.
