Video & STS: Methodologies and Methods (CALL FOR ABSTRACTS for a track at EASST 2010, Trento, Italy)
by Yuwei Lin 01 Feb '10

01 Feb '10

Dear Colleagues, We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to the track on "Video & STS: Methodologies and Methods" to be held at the EASST 2010 conference. Please find a call for abstracts below. The deadline for abstract submissions is March 15, 2010, 23:59:59 CET Abstract should be submitted through the system: http://events.unitn.it/en/easst010/abstract-submission Look forward to meeting you in Italy in September! Best wishes, Yuwei Lin and Christian Greiffenhagen ------------------ CALL FOR ABSTRACTS ------------------ TRACK 10. VIDEO & STS: METHODOLOGIES AND METHODS http://events.unitn.it/sites/events.unitn.it/files/EASST_010_Track_10.pdf Despite the rapid technical developments and a general turn to the visual in the social sciences, video methodologies and methods are still not widely adopted for science and technologies studies (STS). Most researchers continue to rely on ‘traditional’ ethnographic or other qualitative research methods using other means, such as talk or writing. However, as the recent variety of video-based studies have shown, video technologies clearly offer exciting possibilities of capturing the dynamics and complexities in the field. As Macbeth (1990, p. 191) put it: “As a matter of faithfulness to the texture, temporal shape and material detail of the scenes they record, the video of filmic record provides remarkably uninterpreted renderings of the field.”1 But the reality of current STS seems to suggest otherwise. Why are video methodologies and methods not [yet] widely adopted in STS? This panel will contribute to the conference theme of “methodological approaches for investigating scientific and technological practices”. It is devised to explore to what extent video methodologies and methods can help capture and examine the socio-material practice and performance which are so central to the recent pragmatic and practice-based turn in STS since late 70s. We are especially interested in answering the following questions: * How are video methodologies and methods applied in different types of STS research? * What are the challenges of applying video-based methods in STS-like research (e.g., nuisances of using video technologies, field workers’ informed consent, interaction with the field workers, ethics of publishing video data)? * What are the solutions to socio-ethical issues in the employment of video methods? * What are the implications of video-based methods to STS research? * Is it possible to capture ‘where the action is’ on video, or is scientific and technological work too distributed, both spatially and temporally, to allow such capture? Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be submitted by March 15 at: http://events.unitn.it/en/easst010/abstract-submission -- Yuwei Lin | yuwei at ylin dot org http://www.ylin.org

CFP: Cultural legitimation: the valorization of popular culture
by kelly boudreau 01 Feb '10

01 Feb '10

Thought this might interest some on the list. -Kelly Boudreau Doctoral Candidate in Film Studies Université de Montréal Montreal, QC BA / MA Sociology Concordia University Montreal, QC http://digitalconversations.wordpress.com --------------------------------- [Apologies for cross-postings / pour affichages multiples] Call for paper proposals *Cultural legitimation: the valorization of popular culture* Edited by Hélène Laurin and Dominic Arsenault Founded at the Université de Montréal, *Kinephanos* is a bilingual inter-university web-based journal. Focusing on questions involving cinema and popular media, *Kinephanos* encourages interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The journal’s primary interests are movies and popular TV series, video games, emerging technologies and fan cultures. The preferred approaches include cinema studies, communication theories, religion sciences, philosophy, cultural studies and media studies. Theme *Kinephanos*' second issue aims to explore cultural legitimation. One of the discourses in our late modernity era seeks to valorize many movements and phenomena dubbed “popular.” According to Pierre Bourdieu, cultural legitimization is a movement toward making one field autonomous, whether be its audience, or its economic foundations. However, this accreditation operates according to many strategies, oftentimes unique, oftentimes shared, but always drawing on wider social issues. One can think of remediation, as explained by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin: whether be it cinema as “filmed theater,” comic books as “graphic novels,” or video games as “interactive movies,” the same relationship of “homage and rivalry” is at stake with the prior, already established media and arts. We wish to publish articles presenting those moments where popular culture is valorized, while addressing the characteristic issues of this phenomenon, such as the question of aesthetics or the question of power relations. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: - Case studies: video games, popular music, Hollywood cinema, television, animation - Cultural legitimation and celebrity - Power and cultural legitimation - Internet and cultural legitimation - Academia and cultural legitimation - Adaptations and transmediality - Cult objects - Popular culture and its socio-economic context - Cultural industries’ histories While *Kinephanos* privileges publication of thematic issues, we encourage writers to submit articles exceeding the theme which will be published in each issue. How to submit? *Extended abstracts* between 4 and 7 pages are to consist of the object, the problem addressed and the title of the article. Please include bibliographical references, your name, email address and your primary field of study. Send submissions (in French or English) by *March 15th, 2010* to: laurinh(a)videotron.ca or dominic(a)le-ludophile.com Following our acceptance sent to you by email (no later than *April 1st*), please send us your completed article by *July 1st, 2010*. For the editorial guidelines, refer to the section Us & How at http://www.kinephanos.ca. --------------------- *Kinephanos** accepts articles in French and in English** *

Critical Point of View: Wikipedia Research Conference (Amsterdam, March 26/27)
by geert lovink 01 Feb '10

01 Feb '10

Critical Point of View: Second international conference of the CPOV Wikipedia Research Initiative Date: 26-27 March 2010 Location: OBA (Public Library Amsterdam, next to Amsterdam central station), Oosterdokskade 143, Amsterdam Organized by the Institute of Network Cultures Amsterdam, in cooperation with the Centre for Internet and Society in Bangalore, India. Website: www.networkcultures.org/cpov Discussion List: http://p10.alfaservers.com/mailman/listinfo/cpov_listcultures.org Wikipedia is at the brink of becoming the de facto global reference of dynamic knowledge. The heated debates over its accuracy, anonymity, trust, vandalism and expertise only seem to fuel further growth of Wikipedia and its user base. Apart from leaving its modern counterparts Britannica and Encarta in the dust, such scale and breadth places Wikipedia on par with such historical milestones as Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia, the Ming Dynasty's Wen-hsien ta- ch' eng, and the key work of French Enlightenment, the Encyclopédie. The multilingual Wikipedia as digital collaborative and fluid knowledge production platform might be said to be the most visible and successful example of the migration of FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) principles into mainstream culture. However, such celebration should contain critical insights, informed by the changing realities of the Internet at large and the Wikipedia project in particular. The CPOV Research Initiative was founded from the urge to stimulate critical Wikipedia research: quantitative and qualitative research that could benefit both the wide user-base and the active Wikipedia community itself. On top of this, Wikipedia offers critical insights into the contemporary status of knowledge, its organizing principles, function, and impact; its production styles, mechanisms for conflict resolution and power (re-)constitution. The overarching research agenda is at once a philosophical, epistemological and theoretical investigation of knowledge artifacts, cultural production and social relations, and an empirical investigation of the specific phenomenon of the Wikipedia. Conference Themes: Wiki Theory, Encyclopedia Histories, Wiki Art, Wikipedia Analytics, Designing Debate and Global Issues and Outlooks. Confirmed speakers: Florian Cramer (DE/NL), Andrew Famiglietti (UK), Stuart Geiger (USA), Hendrik-Jan Grievink (NL), Charles van den Heuvel (NL), Jeanette Hofmann (DE), Athina Karatzogianni (UK), Scott Kildall (USA), Patrick Lichty (USA), Hans Varghese Mathews (IN), Teemu Mikkonen (FI), Mayo Fuster Morell (IT), Mathieu O'Neil (AU), Felipe Ortega (ES), Dan O'Sullivan (UK), Joseph Reagle (USA), Ramón Reichert (AU), Richard Rogers (USA/NL), Alan Shapiro (USA/DE), Maja van der Velden (NL/NO), Gérard Wormser (FR). Editorial team: Sabine Niederer and Geert Lovink (Amsterdam), Nishant Shah and Sunil Abraham (Bangalore), Johanna Niesyto (Siegen), Nathaniel Tkacz (Melbourne). Project manager CPOV Amsterdam: Margreet Riphagen. Research intern: Juliana Brunello. Production intern: Serena Westra. The CPOV conference in Amsterdam will be the second conference of the CPOV Wikipedia Research Initiative. The launch of the initiative took place in Bangalore India, with the conference WikiWars in January 2010. After the first two events, the CPOV organization will work on producing a reader, to be launched early 2011. PBS Frontline: 'Digital Nation'
by Richard Forno 31 Jan '10

31 Jan '10

FYI. -rick http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/digitalnation/ COMING TUESDAY: DIGITAL NATION Airs Feb. 2nd, 9PM ET (check local listings) Two years ago, FRONTLINE producer Rachel Dretzin made a film called "Growing up Online" which looked at the ways technology is rapidly transforming childhood for the "digital natives" who've known only a world of 24/7 connectivity and media, Facebook and web cams. This week, Dretzin is back with a project that itself "grew up online," a FRONTLINE first that began with a pioneering effort on the web, and has involved the audience in the making of this Tuesday night's film the whole way through. It's called "Digital Nation," and it's a wide-ranging journey through life on the virtual frontier--from the super-wired students of M.I.T. to a classroom of the future in the South Bronx; from "World of Warcraft" gamers to the actual Air Force pilots who, by day, guide drone missiles to their targets in Afghanistan, then come home at night for dinner. Along with Douglas Rushkoff, a one-time evangelist for the digital revolution who's now having some second thoughts, Dretzin also sets out in search of real answers to hard questions about how this technology is changing our lives, and redefining the very nature of human experience. Do you think a Stanford scientist interviewed in this week's film would say you're a successful multitasker when you check e-mail, watch a movie, and write to your friends all at once? Want to visit some of the world's first "internet addiction" camps? Wonder what it's like to live, work, and socialize in a wholly virtual world? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/digitalnation/

**** reminder **** CFP: The Computational Turn
by David M. Berry 31 Jan '10

31 Jan '10

CFP: The Computational Turn http://www.thecomputationalturn.com/ SWANSEA UNIVERSITY 9TH MARCH 2010 Keynote: N. Katherine Hayles (Professor of Literature at Duke University). Keynote: Lev Manovich (Professor, Visual Arts Department, UCSD). The application of new computational techniques and visualisation technologies in the Arts & Humanities are resulting in new approaches and methodologies for the study of traditional and new corpuses of Arts and Humanities materials, sometimes called the Digital Humanities. This new 'computational turn' takes the methods and techniques from computer science to create new ways of distant and close readings of texts (e.g. Moretti). This one-day workshop aims to discuss the implications and applications of what Lev Manovich has called 'Cultural Analytics' and the question of finding patterns using algorthmic techniques. Some of the most startling approaches transform understandings of texts by use of network analysis (e.g. graph theory), database/XML encodings (which flatten structures), or merely provide new quantitative techniques for looking at various media forms, such as media and film, and (re)presenting them visually, aurally or haptically. Within this field there are important debates about the contrast between narrative against database techniques, pattern-matching versus hermeneutic reading, and the statistical paradigm (using a sample) versus the data mining paradigm. Additionally, new forms of collaboration within the Arts and Humanities are emerging which use team-based approaches as opposed to the traditional lone-scholar. This requires the ability to create and manage modular Arts and Humanities research teams through the organisational structures provided by technology and digital communications (e.g. Big Humanities), together with techniques for collaborating in an interdisciplinary way with other disciplines such as computer science (e.g. hard interdisciplinarity versus soft interdisciplinarity). Papers are encouraged in the following areas: - Distant versus Close Reading - Database Structure versus Argument - Data mining/Text mining/Patterns - Pattern as a new epistemological object - Hermeneutics and the Data Stream - Geospatial techniques - Big Humanities - Digital Humanities versus Traditional Humanities - Tool Building - Free Culture/Open Source Arts and Humanities - Collaboration, Assemblages and Alliances - Language and Code (software studies) - Information visualization in the Humanities - Philosophical and theoretical reflections on the computational turn + Participation Requirements + Workshop participants are requested to submit a position paper (approx. 2000-5000 words) about the computational turn in Arts and Humanities, philosophical/theoretical reflections on the computational turn, research focus or research questions related to computational approaches, proposals for academic practice with algorithmic/visualisation techniques, proposals for new research methods with regard to Arts and Humanities or specific case studies (if applicable) and findings to date. Position papers will be published in a workshop PDF and website for discussion and some of the participants will be invited to present their paper at the workshop. Deadline for Position papers: February 10, 2010 Submit papers to: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=tct2010 Any questions about the workshop or attendance please email: d.m.berry(a)swansea.ac.uk Workshop funded by The Callaghan Centre for the Study of Conflict, Power, Empire, Swansea University. Mobenzi > Mobile-Phone-Based Empowerment
by gerrymck 31 Jan '10

31 Jan '10

Mobenzi is a software service that empowers people to earn money by completing simple tasks on their mobile phones. The Concept Mobenzi is a software service that empowers people to be rewarded for completing simple tasks on their mobile phones. These tasks involve certain types of problems that are difficult for a computer to solve without assistance from a real person – even someone without expert knowledge of the problem. We are seeking to uncover new applications for these ‘human intelligence tasks’ and build the systems to process them, so that we can create novel technology solutions and help thousands of poor people earn additional income. History Clyral is a software development company based just outside of Durban in South Africa. In 2006 we created Mobile Researcher to allow organisations to capture data in remote locations using standard mobile phones. We designed the software as a platform because we had many other application ideas that involved the completion of mobile forms. Pilot Project In 2009 we partnered with the Business Trust, through their Shared Growth Challenge Fund to extend the Mobile Researcher platform to cater for the completion of human intelligence tasks and to pilot the service with low income people in South Africa’s urban poverty nodes.
