Special issue of IwC: Feminism and HCI
by Elizabeth Churchill 28 Jan '10

28 Jan '10

CALL FOR PAPERS Feminism and HCI: A Special Issue of Interacting with Computers (https://sites.google.com/site/feminismandhci/home) Special Issue Editors: Shaowen Bardzell (Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing) and Elizabeth F. Churchill (Yahoo! Research) Portrayals of feminism, in politics, the media, and even in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) conferences, suggest that this household word is not always well understood. Academically, feminism is a subdomain of critical theory that integrates a collection of theories, analytical and interpretative methodologies, ethical values, and political positions, which have evolved over the past two centuries. In recent years, HCI as a research discipline has expanded beyond preoccupations with how efficiently a system performs or how 'easy' it is to use; HCI researchers and practitioners are increasingly concerned with culture, society, and the experiential qualities of computing. HCI as a discipline stands to benefit from a deeper engagement with feminist perspectives on the design, promotion, adoption and adaptation of interactive, computer-based technologies. Feminist theories and concepts offer reflective considerations of dominant and alternative epistemologies; offer ways to understand the constitution of gender and the self in everyday life; give us perspectives through which to investigate the indirect effects of design; consider emotional landscapes in design, including pleasure, desire, attraction, sentiment, anger, fear and resistance; address issues of power and agency in how technologies are adopted by us or imposed upon us, including engagement with issues such as privacy, surveillance and gaze; study the adoption and adaptation of technologies in leisure activities such as crafts; consider issues in designing for homes, critically addressing the notion of "home" itself; and address broader issues such as embodiment, memory and performance. The “Feminism and HCI: New Perspectives” Special Issue seeks to provide a forum for scholarly contributions and applications of feminism to the discipline of HCI. Though the topic of feminism has many inputs and applications, we confine our focus to the interaction design implications of this problem space. Specifically, we are concerned with the design and evaluation of interactive systems that are imbued with sensitivity to the central commitments of feminism—agency, fulfillment, identity and the self, equity, empowerment, diversity, and social justice. We also seek to improve our understanding of how gender identities and relations shape both the use of interactive technologies and their design. Additionally, feminist HCI entails critical perspectives that could help reveal unspoken values within HCI’s dominant research and design paradigms, and underpin the development of new approaches, methods and design variations. We see the contribution of feminist theories and methods to HCI in the following ways and encourage submissions that address the following types of issues: · Fundamental and theoretical: how feminism critiques core operational concepts, assumptions, and epistemologies of the field, and what opportunities this critique opens up for the future · Methodological considerations: how feminism interacts with user research, iterative design, evaluation methodologies · User considerations: updating the notion of “the user” to reflect gender in a way that noticeably and directly affects design · Artifact considerations: critically examining how designs configure users’ femininity and masculinity—and what implications they bear for future design work · Your experiences: To what extent do you perceive feminist perspectives already informing your work in HCI? Do you sense that feminist perspectives are informing others’ work in the field? What current issues in HCI might benefit from the application of feminist perspectives? All submissions need to be based on original research and will be subject to the full review process of Interacting with Computers. Instructions for Authors Authors are encouraged to submit a short abstract (300-500 words) and a tentative title prior to the full paper submission, by February 28, 2010, to Shaowen Bardzell (selu (at) indiana (dot) edu) and Elizabeth Churchill (churchill (at) acm (dot) org). Please feel free to send an inquiry prior to writing the abstract. Please put "IwC Feminism SI" in your email subject line. The deadline for the final full-paper submission is June 1, 2010. Manuscripts should be 5000-7500 words, prepared according to the IwC’s guide for authors and should be submitted online. FW: CfP: Workshop on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation (CoMetS)
by Holly Kruse 28 Jan '10

Forwarded from air-l-owner.... Holly Kruse List manager, air-l ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: CfP: Workshop on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation (CoMetS) From: "Daniele Gianni" <daniele.gianni(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, January 28, 2010 4:06 pm To: air-l-owner(a)listserv.aoir.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ################################################################# IEEE WETICE 2010 1st International Workshop on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation CALL FOR PAPERS ################################################################# June 28 - June 30, 2010, Larissa (Greece) http://www.sel.uniroma2.it/CoMetS10 ################################################################# # Papers Due: *** March 2, 2010 *** # Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings # by the IEEE Computer Society Press and indexed by EI. ################################################################# Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is increasingly becoming a central activity in the design of new systems and in the analysis of existing systems because it enables designers and researchers to investigate systems behavior through virtual representations. For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases because of the more complex models and of the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the workshop seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices to the design of collaborative environments. These environments are continuously becoming more complex and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. A non-exhaustive list of hi-level topics includes: * collaborative environments for M&S * agent-based M&S * collaborative distributed simulation * net-centric M&S * web-based M&S * model sharing and reuse * model building and evaluation * modeling and simulation of business processes * modeling for collaboration * simulation-based performance evaluation of collaborative networks * model-driven simulation engineering * domain specific languages for the simulation of collaborative environments * domain specific languages for collaborative M&S To stimulate creativity, however, the workshop maintains a wider scope and invites interested researchers to present contributions that offer original perspectives on collaboration and M&S. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CoMetS'10 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative applications and trends in the workshop research area. Papers should contain original contributions not published or submitted elsewhere. Papers up to six pages (including figures, tables and references) can be submitted. Papers should follow the IEEE format, which is single spaced, two columns, 10 pt Times/Roman font. All submissions should be electronic (in PDF) and will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee members. Full papers accepted for the workshop will be included in the proceedings, published by the IEEE Computer Society Press (IEEE approval pending). Note that at least one author from each accepted paper should register to attend WETICE 2010 to get the paper published in the proceedings. Authors may contact the organizers for expression of interests and content appropriateness at any time. Papers can be submitted in PDF format at the submission site (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=comets10) which is supported by the EasyChair conference management system. yet another thesis - Reachability
by Paterson, Nancy(Academic) 28 Jan '10

28 Jan '10

I'm posting abt my recently completed thesis - 'Bandwidth is Political: Reachability in the Public Internet'. Unlike research concerned with bandwidth and traffic growth, this research shifts the risk analysis away from capacity issues, to focus on performance standards for interconnection and data reachability. I argue that risks to data reachability represent the next stage in debates about the health of the global public Internet. The paper is avail online at my website: http://www.vacuumwoman.com/About/Main/about.html (located at bottom of page) A related custom software platform that provides dynamic, interactive visualizations of the Internet cloud is being developed by myself and a team from the University of Toronto. This platform, called IXmaps, will allow Internet users to create visualizations (in Google Earth) of the route their data packets take across North America, along with highly detailed information about associated elements such as carrier interconnect ‘hotels’ and NSA eavesdropping points. This project is located at: www.ixmaps.ca Please download the custom traceroute program and help us populate our database: http://www.ixmaps.ca/TrGen/index.html Thanks & comments are welcome! CfP EDem10 4th International Conference on eDemocracy
by Hans J. Scholl 27 Jan '10

27 Jan '10

EDem10 4th International Conference on eDemocracy 6 and 7 May 2010 Danube University Krems, Austria www.donau-uni.ac.at/edem<http://www.donau-uni.ac.at/edem> *A revolution doesn*t happen when a society adopts new tools. It happens when society adopts new behaviours* (Clay Shirky) Confirmed Keynote Speakers * Stevan Harnad (American Scientist Open Access Forum; Universite du Quebec a Montreal, CAN; University of Southampton, UK) * Ismael Peña-López (Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain) * Jochen Scholl (The Information School, University of Washington, USA) * Micah L. Sifry (Personal Democracy Forum, TechPresident, New York, USA) * Andy Williamson (Hansard Society, London, UK) Call for Papers Scientific eDemocracy visions and models have been developed since the 1960s, but it is now, during the first decade of the 21st Century, that they are becoming reality, being tested and implemented. Extensive IT provides the necessary basis, but it is not the developments in IT alone that are responsible for successful eDemocracy projects - it is due all those who use and apply them, as they adopt new behaviours and change old ones. The new, digital generation lives and breathes new values: they collaborate, compile content together, share their ideas, create networks on social platforms and organise themselves quickly and simply. The new values held, the new behaviours adopted, the changed mindset, along with improved usability and a still-increasing use of the internet, has led to a rapid and radical change in our society. The EDem10 focuses on these changes which can be seen occurring in different areas and which are manifest in different way: * Transparency & Communication (freedom of information, free information access, openness, information sharing, blogging, micro-blogging, social networks, data visualization, eLearning, empowering, *); * Participation & Collaboration (innovation malls, innovation communities, bottom up, top down, social networks, engagement and accountability, collaborative culture, collaboration between C2C, G2C, *); * Architecture, Concepts & Effects (access and openness, user generated content, peer production, network effects, power laws, long tail, harnessing the power of the crowd, crowd sourcing, social web, semantic web, ...); * Different Fields: open government initiatives, eDemocracy, eParticipation, eVoting, eDeliberation; * Approaches and Disciplines: law & legal studies, social sciences, computer sciences, political sciences, psychology, sociology, applied computer gaming and simulation, democratic theory, media and communication sciences; * Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Approaches; * Research Methods. On primary aim is to bring together researchers and practitioners. We would like to invite individuals from academic, applied and practitioner backgrounds as well as public administration offices, public bodies, NGO/NPOs, education institutions and independent organisations to submit their research and project papers. The main conference language is English; submissions in German (with an abstract in English) are also acceptable. Fees EUR 105,- for authors and PEP-NET Members EUR 125,- early bird rate for participants who register until 28.02.2010 EUR 145,- for participants who register after 28.02.2010 The fee includes conference, proceedings and social program during the conference. A pre-conference social program will be announced later. Deadlines Submission of papers (max. 10 pages): Extended Deadline - 1 March 2010 Notification of acceptance: 2. April 2010 Camera-ready paper submission: 12. April 2010 Conference: 6-7 May 2010 Submissions To submit your paper, please visit the conference website www.donau-uni.ac.at/edem<http://www.donau-uni.ac.at/edem> All submissions will be submitted to a double-blind full paper review by at least 2 reviewers.
