I often contemplate having multiple twitters. My academic followers don't care that I am sitting on the beach right now. My friends don't care that Wednesday was the NCA discount deadline. My Armenian activists followers care for neither. BUT, would requiring that every tweet took into consideration the multiple audiences (including, possibly, the public?) make it as interesting? I also like that I know that Nancy Baym outsourced BoingBoing to her son. Would I have read that if I was only following @n.baym.academic? PLUS, if it is GOOD someone will re-tweet it. Information wants to be ASCII or Unicode? Tibetan-written information cannot be ASCII anyway.

Dear all, Running the risk of trolling and misrepresenting the famous motto "Information wants to be ASCII", I want to raise the question of the difference between "Information wants to be ASCII" versus "Information wants to be Unicode" from a multilingual perspective. It should be pointed out when Lev Manovich declare "Information wants to be ASCII" when talking about remix and remixability of information, it was in 2005 when the adoption of Unicode was just in the early adoption period globally. So I do not intend to raise the question to make lazy criticism against the America-centric implication inside ASCII, but rather raise the question about remix and remixability across linguistic boundaries. Why the Unicode is not universally deployed yet? How can we measure the remixability across linguistic boundaries simply because the information are encoded not in Unicode? Why so many user-generated content websites in China are only using their simplified-Chinese-only kind of "national standard" (GB2312) even when Hong Kong (using traditional Chinese not included in GB2312) is part of China and Beijing claims Taiwan is part of China? What about Tibetan-written information: is it want to be Unicode or GB 18030-2000? Tibetan-written information cannot be ASCII anyway. I really like to hear from you. Will the default culture of Internet shift from ASCII to Unicode?

Dear all, As continuing effort to revive the earlier discussion thread with the title "Information wants to be ASCII or Unicode?", allow me to point out the current news event on a further step towards internationalized domain names, as summarised by boingboing blogger Xeni Jardin on Rachel Maddow Show as below: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/10/30/xeni-on-rachel-maddo-2.html "[D]omain name extensions will be available in non-Latin character sets. Chinese, Greek, Arabic, or any one of the more than 20 official languages in India. In other words, the alphabet you're reading this blog post in will no longer be the default for web addresses." Not long ago, PHP a popular open-source computer scripting language that powers many websites also announced their latest version with the feature of "internationalization capabilities via Unicode support" http://www.thestandard.com/news/2009/10/21/php-6-boost-internationalization… Still, whether the open-source developers will write computer codes that are "unicode safe" remains a challenge, as the PHP creator has been quoted saying: "... unicode is a big problem we need to solve. What is the implications for the future of Internet? The beginning of the end of Anglo-Latin order? The beginning of the end of commonly shared English-based Internet-specific languages? When we reintroduce languages back, have we also reintroduced more state power back? I particularly found the question raised by Rebecca MacKinnon <http://rconversation.blogs.com/> interesting: "What if a human rights group in Canada wants to register a domain name in Chinese or Arabic, in the native-alphabet country extensions for China or Saudi Arabia," she said, "Can the countries involved deny that request? For $100, last time I looked, you can buy screenflow - that will your screen, your webcam and your audio channels. So you can record the video from Skype, or indeed, use it to record demos. soundflower can route audio elsewhere - that's free but slightly tricky to set up. Is Skypecap free or paid? Can't quite tell - looks like there's some kind of hook built in (at least I assume it - all of the ones I've seen have something!)
