Twitter Re-Design
by Mary K. Bryson 12 Nov '09

RE: Why Retweet works the way it does http://evhead.com/2009/11/why-retweet-works-way-it-does.html <BY: Evan Williams (born March 31, 1972) is an American entrepreneur who has founded several Internet companies, including Pyra Labs (creator of weblog-authoring software Blogger) and Twitter, of which he is currently CEO.> I think it's interesting that Ev <creator of Twitter> misses the most valued function of the retweet <to this user>, which is the linkage between the retweeter and the original author of the RT tweet - the creator of Twitter's new modification of retweet removes the citation factor - The current Twitter syntax of say, Richard Smith retweeting something about surveillance and blogging makes me follow a link about say, blogging, precisely because Richard Smith is citing it. For the URL simply to appear in my InBox from ZX would be meaningless. This is a good example of where a tool designer fails to talk to users about what is good about the actual design and what would then, be lost in the supposed "improvement". Mary -- Dr. Mary K. Textbook on the social web?
by Linda Elen Olsen 12 Nov '09

12 Nov '09

Dear list. I am going to teach a course that is supposed to give an introduction to 'the social web' (an overview of different aspects of the social web such as social information systems (IS), social networks, social tagging/semantic web, social gaming/digital culture etc.) and some related topics. Now, I realize that it might be hard to find a textbook that includes all of the topics in my course, but after a lot of searching on my own I thought I'd ask you guys: Do any of you know of a decent textbook that gives an introduction to 'the social web'? Or that comes close? Your help would be of great assistance (to me and others)! :-) Have a nice day. Best regards, Linda Elen Olsen University of Bergen, Norway

I wrote a chapter on the ethics of social media research in a book I recently wrote for market researchers, "The Art of Strategic Listening: Finding Market Intelligence Through Blogs and Other Social Media" (Paramount Press, 2008). Comparable survey/evaluation questions for online participants
by Steven Clift 12 Nov '09

12 Nov '09

E-Democracy.org is working up an evaluation of our "rural voices" and diverse communities Issues Forum efforts. With rural voices we launched four new online town hall "Issues Forums" and in two low income, high immigrant neighborhoods we launched some new "neighbor" Issues Forums. Way back in 2002 (time moves fast!), Jakob Linaa Jensen surveyed a sample of our forum participants - http://www.e-democracy.org/research/surveyquestions.html - back when we served just three local communities in Minnesota. Now we serve 15 communities with 25 Issues Forums across three countries. Anyway, I am picking a set of questions for an online survey that we will run on at least six of our forums and I'd like your input on current semi-standard questions asked of online participants so we can do some comparison. I am also interested in additional questions you'd like to see asked. So what should we ask? The 2002 questions are here: http://www.e-democracy.org/research/surveyquestions.html Please cc: clift(a)e-democracy.org so I am sure to see your replies on my main e-mail account. For background, here are some links: http://e-democracy.org/if - Issues Forum Training http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/536 - Recent volunteer Forum Manager interviews - rural voices http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/509 - Video comments from Cass Lake participant (majority Native American area) http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/412 - Frogtown outreach (large SE Asian population neighborhood) http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/189 - Rural voices launch notes http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/172 - Outreach in Cedar Riverside (large East African population) In this case we are evaluating the outreach/launch process more heavily than just the participation experience. We do unique things like sign people up on paper for the online experience, etc. Also, I am interested in learning about other research on the use of social media in highly diverse/low income areas. As far as we can tell, folks are still stuck on access and basic skill training in such areas and are leaving the "public life" online civic engagement/social media/"we media" content action to the middle and upper classes. In our view, all communities should have a real voice online and connect with each other in public life with their neighbors not just with private life with friends and family which seems to happen on its own. Sincerely, Steven Clift, E-Democracy.org

Digital Natives with a Cause? - A Report
by Nishant Shah 12 Nov '09

12 Nov '09

The Centre for Internet and Society, Bangalore and Hivos<http://http//www.hivos.net/>have assessed the state of knowledge on the potential impact of youth for social transformation and political engagement in the South. This report ‘*Digital Natives with a Cause?’* charts scholarship and practice of youth and technology and informs further research and intervention within diverse contexts and cultures. The report displays that digital natives have a potential impact as agents of change. It concludes that multidisciplinary theoretical approaches venturing beyond the cause-and-effect model and providing the necessary vocabulary and sensitivity are crucial to understanding Digital Natives. The lament that youths are apolitical is a result of insufficient attention to activities that do not conform to existing notions of political and civil society formation. Digital Natives are sensitive and thoughtful; it is time to listen to them and their ideas, and to focus on their development as responsible and active citizens rather than on their digital exploits or technologised interests. The report specifically focuses on youth as e-agents of change within emerging Information Societies to explore questions of technology mediated identities, embedded conditions of social transformation and political participation, as well as potentials for sustained livelihood and education. It identifies Knowledge Gaps and Networks and further areas of intervention in the field of Digital Natives. As a first step in working towards enabling digital natives for social transformation and political engagement, Hivos and CIS will organize a multistakeholder conference fall 2010. A Summary of the report, as well as the detailed narrative are now available for discussion, debate, suggestions and ideas. The report is available at http://cis-india.org/research/dn/dnrep and also at http://http://www.hivos.net/Hivos-Knowledge-Programme/Themes/Digital-Native…<http://http//www.hivos.net/Hivos-Knowledge-Programme/Themes/Digital-Natives…> Apologies for Cross-posting Warm regards Nishant -- Nishant Shah Doctoral Candidate, CSCS, Bangalore.
