Message-ID: <004001ca5d5d$4d2543f0$e76fcbd0$@dk> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi all, A question related to what we do NOT do while spending our time on social network sites: I?m currently trying to dig up academic literature documenting in some form the numbers of active versus passive users of social media, with special focus on the passive users.? ?Active? here for the sake of argument meant in a broad sense:? uploading content, commenting, rating; and ?passive? as just watching or reading, but not interacting with content in any way.? Im basically interested in all forms of recent academic research on this, which actually provide some numbers, not just mentionings of ?rule of thumbs? or second-hand information. ? Particularly, I?d love to know if anyone has researched how many people? ?just? read status updates and do NOT comment, retweet, ?Like? them etc on sites like Facebook or Twitter. (I know it?s a tricky question and perhaps not very useful to make the distinction, since most are likely to have commented or ?liked? at some point, but then again I surmise some people are more likely to do it on a more regularly basis than others, and some are very rarely active??) What I have found so far: A 2008 OfCom report in their UK survey results reports that ?40% looks at other people?s sites (eg. SNS profiles) without leaving messages?, but does not deal with ?passivity? otherwise. A Sysomos survey of Twitter users claims to have found that 21% of people with Twitter-accounts have never tweeted (so they must be ?passive? readers of other people?s tweets?). I know of? Jenny Preece?s early work on lurkers, and Jose Van Dijck in her 2009 paper ?Users like you? Theorizing agency in user-generated content? mentions a Forrester report from 2007 ?Mapping Participation in Activities? (which you have to pay for), talking of 33% of users being passive spectators (of videos, blogs etc) and 52% ?inactives?. An OECD 2007 report ?Participative Web: User-Generated content? (according to Dijck) says more than 80% are passive recipients of content. All in all not much knowledge to go by, and mostly just numbers. And then there?s the 1/10/89 % meme, but how substantial is it: www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2006/jul/20/guardianweeklytechnologysection2 I've perused Danah Boyd?s extensive list on social network research, but at least judging from the titles of articles listed there & still unknown to me, ?passive? SNS use hasn?t really been the topic of any papers so far? So: Do any of you know of any (other) work in this area? ? I?ll be happy to do a summary here or in the social media sphere.. CfP: From Face to Facebook: performing (im)politeness in social media environments (SymPol 2010, Basel)
by Cornelius Puschmann 09 Nov '09

09 Nov '09

*From Face to Facebook: performing (im)politeness in social media environments* Panel session at the 5th International Symposium on Politeness, 30 June - 2 July 2010, Basel, Switzerland (http://www.sympol.unibas.ch/) Theresa Heyd (University of Pennsylvania, USA), Cornelius Puschmann (Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany) In its earliest days, politeness theory set out to identify “universals in language use” (Brown and Levinson 1978). Such claims to universality were later contested, in particular with regard to cultural variation (e.g. Wierzbicka 1991): norms of appropriateness, concepts of face and other sociopragmatic aspects are nowadays accepted to be (somewhat) culture-specific. In the light of such 'variationist' tendencies, it may be asked whether politeness and self-presentation are also medium- and technology-specific. Are there new politeness paradigms in online communication, especially in its most recent forms? Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr are “technologies of the self” (Foucault) where people do things with words in a very literal sense. Constructing a digital self via video, images and still most prominently language ("meforming"; Naaman et al. 2009) and negotiating it in exchanges with other users are central activities in social media formats. While facework could previously be classified unambiguously in terms of linguistic and non-linguistic actions, the digitally constructed self also "acts" via language when symbolically engaging in interpersonal activities such as liking, poking, friending, following, banning and muting. These linguistic quasi-actions replace the means which are available offline to indicate stance and manage impressions and therefore fulfill an important function. In a larger sense, it appears that the concept of “face” itself has taken on a new meaning in digital social media that is simultaneously more encompassing and more important: establishing and negotiating an online identity has become one of the central activities of Internet users. We particularly invite contributions on the following issues: * Constructing and maintaining face in social media * Performative and metacommunicative acts in social media * Consequences and implications of online self exposure: identity management, identity safety, privacy vs. exposure * Performing face in social media vs. Web 1.0 and pre-digital settings * The mitigation of face in online/offline interactions. This panel focuses on the related aspects of self-presentation and symbolic actions as components of digital face management. We welcome contributions addressing all forms of online communication; studies regarding more recent social media are especially welcome. Both theory-building and data-driven contributions are of interest. Abstracts (500 words max.) should be submitted by *December 1, 2009*. Berlin Twitter Wall
by Liz 09 Nov '09

09 Nov '09

The Berlin Twitter Wall (http://www.berlintwitterwall.com/ ) is an interesting visual, collaborative online experiment to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's noteworthy how international the contributions are or, at least, how many different languages are represented (I see German, English, Spanish, Portuguese & Japanese at the moment). So far, the contributions are a blend of RTs, political philosophy, statements about peace & news about associated events of the day. I'm sure this isn't the first event-specific, crowdsourced, online art projects but I wonder if with Twitter we'll see more. Liz Pullen nwjerseyliz(a)yahoo.com

OII Summer Doctoral Programme 2010: Applications open!
by Rebecca Eynon 09 Nov '09

09 Nov '09

Dear friends and colleagues, I am delighted to announce that we are accepting applications for the OII Summer Doctoral Programme 2010. OII SDP2010: Oxford (5-16 July 2010) http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/sdp/ The programme aims to stretch the thinking of all students on a range of issues, to provide valuable advice and support for students' thesis research, and to establish a peer network of excellent young researchers. As in previous years, the programme will involve daily research seminars and panel sessions given by leading academics, with students having the opportunity to present their research to their peers in informal seminars. Break-out sessions will allow groups to focus more narrowly on research questions of mutual interest, and time is made available for individual research and informal contact with tutors and fellow students. We will let you know as tutors and academic partners are confirmed. Student feedback on the Summer Doctoral has always been overwhelmingly positive, and the SDP2010 promises to be yet another excellent year in this series. I hope you will consider applying, encourage your students to apply, or forward this email to people who may be interested! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries. Best wishes, Dr Rebecca Eynon SDP2010 Course Director mailto:sdp@oii.ox.ac.uk http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/sdp/ 1. SDP2010: Apply / Deadline 2. Candidates: What are we looking for? 3. Background: the OII Summer Doctoral Programme 4. Fees / Scholarships / Partners 5. Contact / SDP Alumni -------------------------------------------------- 1. SDP2010: Apply / Deadline -------------------------------------------------- The SDP2010 Application Form is available on the website. The application process will close at 17:00 GMT on Monday 22 February 2010. Successful applicants will be notified by 1 April 2010. Apply for the SDP2010: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/sdp/ References will be requested from one or more of the students' current doctoral supervisors. All teaching will be in English, so all applicants should be able to demonstrate their competence in this language. -------------------------------------------------- 2. Candidates: What are we looking for? -------------------------------------------------- Up to 27 places are available, awarded on a competitive basis. Preference will be given to students at an advanced stage of their doctorate who have embarked on writing their thesis. Like the course tutors, our SDP students come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds: computer science, sociology, law, etc. Whatever the background, the programme aims to facilitate deep discussion of both substantive and methodological research issues, and to help students frame their research questions and direct their research. As in other years, the SDP2010 will seek to generate dialogue and debate between students from different disciplinary backgrounds with a view to improving each student's doctoral thesis and identifying topics for future collaborative research. With these aims in mind, we are particularly keen to attract the most promising students who are prepared to engage with different disciplines, backgrounds and viewpoints. Past student biographies, tutor lists and programmes: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/sdp/ -------------------------------------------------- 3. Background: the OII Summer Doctoral Programme -------------------------------------------------- Launched in 2003, the OII SDP is now an important fixture of the OII's year, a time when we bring together a diverse group of students and tutors for two weeks of intense work and discussion. We consciously encourage the international character of the SDP in order to encourage peer networks that are as diverse as possible, and to benefit students who may not have significant academic peer-groups in their own universities. The programme is held away from Oxford every other year (Beijing 2005, Boston 2007, Brisbane 2009). 2010 being an even year, we will be back home in Oxford. Quick Stats: 187 students 38 nationalities 86 tutors 370 hours of seminars .. since the first SDP2003. And counting. SDP Home: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/sdp/ -------------------------------------------------- 4. Fees / Scholarships / Partners -------------------------------------------------- The cost of the course will be £1550, which covers accommodation at Lady Margaret Hall (an Oxford College) from 4-16 July inclusive, and all course tuition fees. Travel to and from Oxford is not included in this fee. Lady Margaret Hall: http://www.lmh.ox.ac.uk/ We are currently looking for additional funding to provide support for student scholarships. Students do not need to make a request for a scholarship at the application stage as this will be dealt with once the selection process has been completed. We are grateful for the generosity of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) in supporting this programme. Our SDP2010 academic partners will be announced soon. -------------------------------------------------- 5. Call for papers - New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia
by Cunliffe D J (AT) 09 Nov '09

09 Nov '09

Call for Papers: New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Special Issue on: Hypertext and Web Science: Emergent Structures, Communities and Collective Intelligence Guest editors: David Millard and Weigang Wang David Millard, School of Electronics & Computer Science, University of Southampton, dem(a)ecs.soton.ac.uk Weigang Wang, Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, weigang.wang(a)mbs.ac.uk Submission deadline: 4 January 2010 Acceptance notification: 19 March 2010 Final manuscripts due: 30 April 2010 Hypertext has always been about people and their relationships with information. The Hypertext Community has over thirty years of experience of exploring hypertext interfaces, infrastructures and usage. Now Web 2.0 technology and practice has greatly promoted this sort of interactive collaboration and social networking, resulting in large scale collaborative knowledge creation and e-democracy activities. Semantic Web technologies and the Linked Data Web could impact even more strongly. Imagine if most personal and organisational data were available on the Web and analysable with the help of software agents, how would people and organisations run their businesses, how would they identify, select, and collaborate with their partners and customers to face shared challenges? Web Science is a proposed new discipline to study the continuing impact of the Web on people, business and society. Web Science is about understanding how technical innovation changes practice, and how behaviour in the small translates to behaviour in the large. This special issue is for people who believe that their work is at the intersection of Hypertext and Web Science. We invite papers on a variety of technical topics with a personal, cultural or societal slant. Topics may include (but are not limited to) the following: - New ways of collaborative working enabled by the latest Web Technologies - New approaches to personal information management or learning - Technical and social protocols underlying emerging web technology and practice - Novel community interaction, such as e-democracy, collaborative decision making, or knowledge elicitation - Virtual and emergent structures that have changed the way that we view or organise our lives or businesses - Changes in traditional roles and expectations, for example, notions of authorship and ownership - Studies of on-line communities and their behaviour - Characteristics and novel applications of collective intelligence - Innovative social or knowledge interfaces Papers should describe completed work with well-evidenced conclusions, and interdisciplinary work will be particularly welcomed. Submissions may take the form of research papers or shorter technical notes and should be submitted electronically at the Journal's Manuscript Central site http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tham Questions and enquiries concerning this call should be directed to the guest editors. Open topic papers meeting NRHM's scope in general are also welcome. The New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia (NRHM) is published by Taylor & Francis and appears in both print and digital formats. http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/13614568.asp
