BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; }Liza and AoIR, Have you seen this wiki - http://www.webnographers.org/index.php?title=Books [1] ? How about a wiki virtual ethnography text book, which we all create? Scott http://scottmacleod.com http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University On Thu 12/11/09 9:26 AM , Liz nwjerseyliz(a)yahoo.com sent: I second this idea of an online bibliography, especially for journal articles which are spread out across disciplinary boundaries. Books are much easier to locate. It would also be helpful if they were linked either to an author's homepage or an online source for the material (if an online journal or to Amazon if a book). I really appreciate the suggestions already made & it would be great if they could be collected & made available to others. CfP: CSCW 2010 Workshop - The Changing Dynamics of Scientific Collaborations
by Cecilia Aragon 13 Nov '09

13 Nov '09

Call for Participation ** Submission deadline: November 20, 2009 ** CSCW 2010 Workshop, Sunday, Feb 7, 2010 The Changing Dynamics of Scientific Collaborations The confluence of two major trends in scientific research is leading to an upheaval in standard scientific practice and collaborative technologies. A new generation of scientists, working in large-scale collaborations, is repurposing social software for use in collaborative science. Existing social tools such as chat, IM, and FriendFind are being adopted and modified for use as group problem-solving facilities. At the same time, exponentially greater and more complex datasets are being generated at a rate that is challenging the limits of current hardware, software, and human cognitive capability. A concerted effort to create software that will support new scientific practices and handle this data tsunami is redefining the collaboratory and represents a new frontier for computer supported cooperative work. This follow-on event to a similarly themed workshop at CHI 2009 is intended to foster community among researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines interested in the changing dynamics of scientific collaborations. We encourage papers on the following topics, especially those with a focus on changing practices in these areas: * Collaborative scientific applications concerning data gathering, analysis, sharing, and visualization * Case studies concerning data gathering, analysis, sharing and visualization * Socio-technical research on scientific collaborations * Social networks of scientists * Repurposing social software for science * Participatory design and/or rapid prototyping for scientific software * Distributed data gathering and analysis * Time-critical scientific applications * Studies of generational differences in how science is done * Cross-functional applications and comparisons of a scientific to a non-scientific field Paper Submission Instructions: Submissions should be position papers 2-4 pages in length. Please use the ACM SIGCHI Template (Word version: http://www.cscw2010.org/templates/cscw2010pubsformat.doc or LaTeX version: http://www.cscw2010.org/templates/cscw2010pubsformat.cls) . All submissions will be reviewed. The possibility of a journal special issue or book based on expanded versions of the submissions will be explored following the workshop. Papers (in .pdf or .doc format) should be submitted via email to CRAragon(a)lbl.gov. Please put "CSCW 2010 Workshop Submission" in the subject of the email. ** Submission deadline: November 20, 2009 ** Notification of acceptance will be sent out on or before December 18, 2009. Ethics and Online Presentation?
by Amy Barackman 12 Nov '09

12 Nov '09

Dear All, I am currently helping Dr. Koelsch from Duquesne University do research on the ethics related to the online presentation of participant narratives. I would love to get input from the AoIR group on the relevant research on this topic. Specifically, I am interested in the following: 1) Is there precedent for putting narratives on an online site for general use? 2) If not, what might be some ethical issues that would differentiate the confidentiality of narratives in an online space from those that are published in a book or journal? Any leads would be appreciated! Amy -- Amy Barackman, M.A. Graduate Student Duquesne University Pittsburgh, PA 15282 (203) 648-6005

fyi...potential Hotmail security/privacy issue
by Richard Forno 12 Nov '09

(Just passing along for any AIR'ers who may be using Hotmail. Not exactly a good idea from a security/privacy concern, IMHO -rick) Hotmail imposes tracking cookies for logout By Chris Williams 2th November 2009 15:19 GMT Hotmail users are now unable to log out of their account if the browser they are using does not accept third party cookies. The move by Microsoft raises security concerns, particularly as PCs on corporate networks and in cybercafes and libraries are often set to reject cookies. < - > http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/12/hotmail_cookies/

Danah, Great article! Missed my T Station stop while reading it. @bacigalupe Message: 1 Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 19:15:44 -0500 From: danah boyd <aoir.z3z(a)danah.org> To: "Mary K. Scott Golder, Gilad Lotan, and I investigated retweeting practices in the spring and summer and found a whole plethora of different practices that are not supported by this implementation. We wrote this up in a HICSS paper that will be published and presented in January, but we've made a draft version available for those who want to know more about retweeting: Tweet, Tweet, Retweet: Conversational Aspects of Retweeting on Twitter danah boyd, Scott Golder, Gilad Lotan HICSS 2010 http://www.danah.org/papers/TweetTweetRetweet.pdf
