Re: [Air-L] Textbook on the social web?

Linda--That is a very interesting question. I have taught an introduction to social media course I created for a few years now for the MA Media Studies program at The New School. I have found that combining chapters from a few of the best books together right now seems to work very well. Here is what I have used or still do: * Here Comes Everybody, Clay Shirky (key text) * The Wealth of Networks, Yochai Benkler (theory and background) * Everything is Miscellaneous, David Weinberger (tagging and knowledge) * Infotopia, Sunstein (Wisdom of Crowds) * Ambiant Findability, Peter Morville (searching and finding) * Smart Mobs, Howard Rheingold (collective behavior) * We the Media, Dan Gilmore (impact on news, journalism, info dissemination) And then of course there are about 30-50 articles, print and Web based assigned from authors like dana boyd, Jay Rosen, and many others... 11 Nov '09

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The Machine Translation Marathon 2010, organised by the National Centre for Language Technology and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation at Dublin City University on behalf of the EuroMatrixPlus Consortium, is the fourth in a series of MT Marathons organised by the EU EuroMatrix and EuroMatrixPlus research projects on Machine Translation. The EuroMatrixPlus consortium invites researchers, developers, students, and users of machine translation for participation. The event will feature • Winter School classes on current methods in statistical MT with hands-on lab sessions (for novices and beginners) • Research showcase (invited talks by leading researchers) • Presentation of new open source tools for MT (separate call for papers will follow) • Work in small group on implementing new methods and features to improve open source MT tools (for more advanced researchers and developers) Where: Dublin City University, Ireland When: January 25-30, 2010 How: On-line Registration How much: Attendance is free of charge, but limited. For more information and online registration please go to http://mtmarathon2010.info The MT Marathon consists of several events taking place at the same place to allow for free flow of thoughts and exchange of information and experience: a "winter school" with associated lab lessons, invited research talks, presentation of new open source machine translation tools. The winter school will offer lectures on: • Introduction to MT and MT evaluation • Word alignment • Phrase-based models and decoding • Tree-based models and decoding • Advanced topics in statistical machine translation Each lecture will accompanied by an afternoon lab session, in which participants will implement basic methods or work through hands-on tutorials on installing, training, and using statistical machine translation tool kits. The open source convention allows participants in small groups to work on projects that advance existing machine translation tools, integrate new features, find new uses for machine translation, etc. To give examples, recent projects included: • better search in machine translation ("cube pruning") • the implementation of a web page translation front end (<a href="http://demo.statmt.org/web.cgi" target="_blank">web.cgi</a>) • improving minimum error rate training • support authors who want to translate Wikipedia articles Participants are encouraged to propose projects that could be carried out in small groups within the six days of Marathon. The main developers of the Moses and Joshua tool kits will attend the workshop, organise projects, and assist with extending these tool kits. CFP -- Digital Diasporas: Distances, Cultures, and Languages (ACLA 2010, April 1-4, New Orleans)
by Scott Kushner 10 Nov '09

10 Nov '09

Call for Papers/Presentations Digital Diasporas: Distances, Cultures, Languages a seminar to be held at ACLA 2010, April 1-4, New Orleans, La. Despite the continued existence of the book, the newspaper, and the scholarly journal, digital humanists are confronted with the sneaking suspicion that the internet is somehow different, a vast new space that mixes up our identities, our politics, and our languages. Networked texts give comparative literature the opportunity to ask: what exactly are we comparing? What kind of a diaspora is it when we can simultaneously be here, there, everywhere, and nowhere? Who is spreading out, where are they spreading to and from, and what might organize their itineraries? Finally, how do these texts, spaces, subjects, movements, and cultures coexist with and modify earlier media regimes? This seminar will address aspects of internet culture that cross, crush, redefine, and/or reinforce borders; that eradicate and/or extend notions of distance; that legitimate, destabilize, and/or invent linguistic practices. Potential topics include (but are certainly not limited to) blogs, Twitter feeds, YouTube, Facebook, SMS and mobile telephony, listservs, MMORPGs, lurkers, activists, hacking, art, affinity groups, citizenship, affect, nationality, gender, race, class, geographies, histories, literacies. Work representing all theoretical inclinations is welcome. Please contact Scott Kushner (scott.kushner(a)gmail.com) with questions. To receive full consideration, proposals must be submitted by Friday, November 13, at the website of the American Comparative Literature Association (http://acla.org/acla2010) where you can learn more about the conference format.

by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 10 Nov '09

10 Nov '09

Colleagues/ Houston , We Have Reached The Tipping Point >>> /Gerry Ipswich, MA (PRWEB) November 10, 2009 -- EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) is bringing its EBSCOhost(r) databases to users-even if users are on their smartphones. EBSCO has released EBSCOhost(r) Mobile(tm) allowing researchers to access their EBSCOhost(r) databases via smartphones and other handheld devices. EBSCOhost Mobile allows us to provide users with a platform that makes the power of EBSCOhost, and its content, highly accessible on the most popular smartphones and mobile devices. [snip] All databases and services currently available on the EBSCOhost platform will be available via EBSCOhost Mobile. The EBSCOhost interface is the most-used research platform currently available in more than 100,000 libraries around the world. Since the interface is the basis for EBSCO Discovery Service(tm), EBSCOhost Mobile is poised to dramatically impact mobile searching. EBSCOhost Mobile provides a convenient way for customers using mobile devices to find quality content. The main EBSCOhost Mobile screen offers a number of options including choosing which EBSCOhost database(s) to search plus setting search options, accessing field codes and specifying preferences. [snip] Many of the existing EBSCOhost features such as search modes, limiting to full text, date ranges, peer-reviewed content or by publication are available. Users will also be able to search images from their mobile devices. The result list is scrollable and available data includes citations, Image Quick View(tm) and access to full text articles. The result list also features a relevancy indicator and users are able to email results. Clicking into a result replicates the EBSCOhost user experience providing researchers with information including author information/affiliation, links to the source, document type, subject terms, NAICS/Industry codes along with the abstract, ISSN, Accession Number, persistent links, images, links to full text, etc. The interface has been designed with a lower resolution, simplifying the interface by removing folders and some other more advanced features for increased speed and user convenience. In addition to providing access to smartphone users, EBSCOhost Mobile will also work on desktops helping libraries with low bandwidths since it uses only a fraction of the bytes compared to a traditional EBSCOhost search. EBSCOhost Mobile will also open up access to research databases to researchers in remote locations who are only able to access via satellite links.
