Research on "passive" social media use?
by Lisbeth Klastrup 06 Nov '09

06 Nov '09

Hi all, A question related to what we do NOT do while spending our time on social network sites: Im currently trying to dig up academic literature documenting in some form the numbers of active versus passive users of social media, with special focus on the passive users. Active here for the sake of argument meant in a broad sense: uploading content, commenting, rating; and passive as just watching or reading, but not interacting with content in any way. Im basically interested in all forms of recent academic research on this, which actually provide some numbers, not just mentionings of rule of thumbs or second-hand information. Particularly, Id love to know if anyone has researched how many people just read status updates and do NOT comment, retweet, Like them etc on sites like Facebook or Twitter. (I know its a tricky question and perhaps not very useful to make the distinction, since most are likely to have commented or liked at some point, but then again I surmise some people are more likely to do it on a more regularly basis than others, and some are very rarely active??) What I have found so far: A 2008 OfCom report in their UK survey results reports that 40% looks at other peoples sites (eg. SNS profiles) without leaving messages, but does not deal with passivity otherwise. A Sysomos survey of Twitter users claims to have found that 21% of people with Twitter-accounts have never tweeted (so they must be passive readers of other peoples tweets?). I know of Jenny Preeces early work on lurkers, and Jose Van Dijck in her 2009 paper Users like you? Theorizing agency in user-generated content mentions a Forrester report from 2007 Mapping Participation in Activities (which you have to pay for), talking of 33% of users being passive spectators (of videos, blogs etc) and 52% inactives. An OECD 2007 report Participative Web: User-Generated content (according to Dijck) says more than 80% are passive recipients of content. All in all not much knowledge to go by, and mostly just numbers. And then theres the 1/10/89 % meme, but how substantial is it: www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2006/jul/20/guardianweeklytechnologysection2 I've perused Danah Boyds extensive list on social network research, but at least judging from the titles of articles listed there & still unknown to me, passive SNS use hasnt really been the topic of any papers so far? So: Do any of you know of any (other) work in this area? Ill be happy to do a summary here or in the social media sphere.. Lisbeth Klastrup, IT University of Copenhagen

Papers are based on selected presentations given at the 5th annual Making Links conference, held at The University of Melbourne from 11th to 13th November, 2008. Aneta Podkalicka and Jonathan Staley report on the development, operation and management of a youth media program, YouthWorx Media and how digital storytelling is being used in conjunction with community radio to engage disadvantaged young people. Peta-Marie Standley and her colleagues introduce The Traditional Knowledge Revival Pathways (TKRP), an Indigenous-owned community, training and environmental consultancy, that uses new media tools including digital storytelling techniques to reconnect people to place and to demonstrate the value of the ancient Indigenous knowledge system in providing solutions to issues of contemporary concern. Natalie Davey and Samia Goudie report on the Hope Vale – Pelican project. This partnership between the Elders of Hope Vale, and Pelican Expeditions, a marine research and education service provider aims to promote social and emotional wellbeing and caring for country. Throughout 2009 the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) collaborated with individuals and Indigenous communities across Queensland in an initiative that used digital storytelling to capture responses to the Apology made by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Jean Burgess and Helen Klaebe report on the collaborative process used to capture responses from Brisbane-based individuals. The Australian Centre for the Moving Image is one of the few cultural institutions of its kind worldwide. Helen Simondson charts the development of the Digital Storytelling program at ACMI. About 3CMedia and the Making Links issue 3CMedia is a scholarly e-journal which aims to provide a forum for promoting, reporting and debating research in community-based, citizen's and 'third sector' media and culture. 3CMedia is published by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia and access to the journal is free of charge. Contributions covering a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, research methods and topics are welcome. All papers published in 3CMedia are subject to a process of blind peer review and many are based upon papers presented in the academic stream of the Community Broadcasting Association's Annual Conference or the annual Making Links conference. Making Links (see also www.makinglinks.org.au) is a conference that seeks to engage interested people, organisations and groups working at the intersection of social action and information technology, including community workers, educators, trainers, non-profit organisations, people who work with marginalised groups, activists and researchers. Fwd: UNESCO World Report on Cultural Diversity available online
by Meryl Krieger 05 Nov '09

05 Nov '09

Hi all: This came through to me just now from another one of my lists. I thought some people might find it interesting/useful. Best, Meryl Krieger ---------- Forwarded message ----------*To:* migration-shs-en(a)lists.unesco.org *Subject:* [migration-shs-en] UNESCO World Report on Cultural Diversity available online *World Report on Cultural Diversity* The newest World Report of UNESCO is focused on cultural diversity as a source of renewal for public policies in service to development, social cohesion and peace. Cultural diversity is addressed in terms of dialogue, dynamics, and the new specific challenges it may pose for languages, educational systems, news and entertainment media and the business world. Based on the analysis of recent initiatives, concrete examples, case studies and successful practices, this report advances a number of pathways worth exploring for renewing development strategies in favour of poverty eradication, environmental action and sustainable, human-centred governance. The World Report aims to address the manifold aspects of cultural diversity, critically review common notions and assumptions, and propose policy-oriented recommendations on topics as diverse as identities and dialogue, the future of languages and intercultural education, media pluralism and cultural industries, the business world, local knowledge, biodiversity, sustainable development, governance and human rights. A renewed discussion of cultural diversity – the promotion and protection of which are supported by an array of normative instruments – is timely in these times of crisis. The impacts of globalization (and increasing urbanization and migration) are challenging our very understanding of cultures and identities. In this sense, cultural diversity is a much more complex phenomenon than it initially appears, as are the relationships between globalization and cultural diversity. As these are facts with which we must contend, it is of utmost importance today to create the conditions upon which cultural diversity can become the means for ensuring dialogue and peaceful co-existence, and sustainable and fruitful development. While the promotion of cultural diversity has taken on increasing visibility on the international scene, it often continues to be perceived as a threat to the cohesion of increasingly diversified societies. Hence, the necessity of elucidating the conditions upon which cultural diversity can constitute a positive contribution to realizing the objectives of development and peace. *The World Report is available on line*: · Full report in English<http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0018/001852/185202E.pdf> (pdf). call for papers: special issue of Digital Icons on war, conflict and commemoration in the age of digital reproduction
by Adi Kuntsman 05 Nov '09

05 Nov '09

dear colleagues, this is a new and exciting peer-reviewed journal that now invites submissions for their second special issue. please distribute widely. ****************************************************************************** Digital Icons: Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media http://www.digitalicons.org/ **Call for proposals for the Special Issue War, Conflict and Commemoration in the Age of Digital Reproduction ( Autumn 2010)** Wars, conflicts and commemoration occupy the minds of today's users of new media across the globe, especially those in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe: from digital accounts of 'wars on terror' to virtual museums of political terror under communism; from cyberwars against websites and databases to computer war games; from on-line anti-war organising to virtual memorials to WWII soldiers; from photo-and video- reporting on warfare in Kosovo, Chechnya, Gaza or Georgia to flash-mobs of political protest or racist incitement; from digitalised personal memories and family histories to YouTube clips featuring victorious presidential speeches. The aim of this special issue is to explore the ways wars and conflicts are mediated, commemorated, reported and discussed on the Internet as well as in other forms of new media, including mobile phones, digital broadcasting and computer games. What is the role of new media in understanding, representing, negotiating and remembering (or forgetting) war and terror? What is the status of testimony, evidence and reportage in the age of digital reproduction? What practices of memory do new information and communication technologies entail? What structures of feeling operate in on-line reports and debates around military operations and human suffering? How can digital mediations of conflict bring people and communities together, while tearing others apart? And lastly, how can the embodied, physical violence intensify in digital interactions, and how can it be resisted? This special issue of Digital Icons aims to create a forum for scholars working in the fields of war, conflict, commemoration, digital media, and new media, while simultaneously addressing linguistic, cultural, historical and political aspects of new media use in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe. We invite original articles that focus on one or more countries of the region, or on their diasporas. We also welcome theoretical essays, reflection by media practitioners on their own practices, contributions from artists and authors, and reviews of relevant projects, books and events. Deadline for submissions: 1 May 2010 Anticipated date of publication: October 2010 Please contact Adi Kuntsman warconflictcommemoration(a)googlemail.com or DI editors editor(a)digitalicons.org to discuss your submission.
