facebook, twitter and annoyances

1. Nancy, I think it is more complex. What if there are really interesting people whose posts are often filled with gems, but at the same posts some self-infatuated or status update stuff ("going for breakfast") ("sitting in my garden") stuff which is not interesting to almost all. 2. Christophe, I don't understand why you have included my name. I don't think we ever met, and you certainly don't know me. I had nothing to do with the CNN story. Re: [Air-L] Twittering

5.25's aren't toooo hard. There are services that will transfer files. Lawyers from eBay wanted to see some of my work from 1983 and we had to get the original model for the Boston Computer Exchange off of old 5.25 disks that I had in storage. Our demo we showed at Comdex in 1983 and 1984. All stored on 5.25 disks. All part of a law suit over who created the earliest system for buying on-line. While we had no trouble getting a service to copy the data to modern media, it is only from 26 years ago... Imagine trying to get data off a really OLD computer, C/PM or pre-PC era computers. All of my writing from the 80's is inaccessible to me now. Those of word processors made files in ASCII, but the programs no longer work under Windows. So it is effectively gone. Even if it was well stored, backed up and archived, there is no way to get that data back into use. I notice that pretty much everything from that era is NOT on the Internet. It is hard to find news items from minor journals from before 2000. Lots of articles about what we were doing in the 80's and 90's has not been brought up to the Internet, so there is a sense that "history" has a bump in the road. Google is not able to find stuff that never got brought into the current media. I really wonder if the children of today will have any sense of their personal history or if it will all disappear. We talk as if facebook is forever, we warn people not to leave a digital footprint that will embarrass them later - - but all it takes is a glitch or a bankruptcy and all the data will be gone. If you have ever had a hard drive fail and you lost everything, you understand how ephemeral our data is. As a consequence, I am back to writing an old fashioned book - on paper.... I am really enjoying this discussion, because of the way it merges personal reflection with theoretical knowledge (a convergence that Twitter and Facebook provide precisely because the same people post such widely varying comments- from food-related ones to academia-related ones). I wonder how much of what is posted on Twitter and Facebook is a response to the way in which the updates are elicited. On Twitter, the question above the comment box asks: what are you doing? Naturally people respond accordingly. On Facebook, the question is: what's on your mind? With regard to food, both sites get posts about culinary experiences, but perhaps they are presented differently partly because of the way the information is framed by the question. Selected audience also might be a factor, as some have expressed so well on this list. When I make a post about food, I address a part of my total potential audience base. When I post about movies, it might be another part. Posts about my kids go out to yet another part. The point is that people can choose to read or to ignore. That is the beauty of social media- active choice. I have to say my pet peeve with regard to Twitter so far is that when people try to squash all their ideas into 140 characters, sometimes I can't figure out what they are actually trying to say! Re: [Air-L] Food updates
by Jacqueline Vickery 02 Nov '09

As many others have noted, often food updates receive the most comments on FB statuses (my simple status: "Parmesan makes everything better" is definitely one of my most commented updates on my FB). I just thought I'd point out the obvious though, that this very thread discussing food on AoIR has generated more replies than any other topics the past few days. This is certainly not considered a banal or trivial space, and yet here we are discussing food. And just as the conversation from "Facebook annoyances" has evolved to address all these different food-related remarks, a similar thing often happens in response to food updates on Twitter/FB. Food is simultaneously embedded within many cultural and personal implications, but on the surface is also a rather benign topic. Thus it seems to have the potential to lead to so many different conversations that aren't really about food at all. Food updates often function as some sort of back door approach to discussing personal memories, routines, tastes, habits, relationships, etc. perhaps because food is simultaneously so personal and yet seemingly so trivial. Just my two cents on why food updates generate so many comments (on FB and apparently on the listserv!) my breakfast news, terminated
by Barry Wellman 02 Nov '09

02 Nov '09

FIVE peeps have asked me to repeatedly post my breakfast daily. It's boring. I eat the same thing every day. My life is so complex, that in my semi-conscious state, I treat breakfast as a constant (a healthy one to be sure, thanks to Bev), but not as a variable. I'm astounded. I know that outgo has been studied, just Google "coprology". But outside of Truman Capote & WK Kellogg, who studies intake? "Why is it that, when we go online, we want to optimize for the brilliant conversations only? Why do we want to reduce our connections down to only one facet? Is this because of the asynchronicity? Is it because of our self-involvement? Or something else? For me it's not so much about optimizing or reductions but about being aware of my need to calibrate my attention based on my mood, energy level and interest. I've started playing with Twitter lists to see what effect that has on my experience. I also have a need for privacy, in both directions and I equate degrees of privacy with degrees of intimacy and ultimately vulnerability, all the same experiences we have in f2f contexts. I think I've become less tolerant of the quirkiness of humanity because I can feel so utterly inundated with humanity online. I should probably add that I don't own a television nor consume American media anywhere near the average, which is to me another form and node of involvement or in my case the lack there of.
