my breakfast
by Barry Wellman 04 Nov '09

04 Nov '09

Well, AoIR-ists, I will cater to your tastes: I had a glass of fresh organic orange juice first (don't know which type of orange, alas). Followed by 3 teaspoons of organic maple-tinged sheep yogurt (Ewenty Farms, Ontario -- don't know which type of sheep), topped with fresh organic blackberries and raspberries Followed by one of Sharon Wohl's delicious non-sugar muffins for diabetes While sipping Prince of Darkness coffee from Ideal Coffee Co in Toronto, roasted last week, but freshly ground this AM. This tells you a lot about me, but I am not going to repeat everyday. (In any event, it would basically be Ibid, except the days I travel or have Whole-Os). BTW, the person who started me off thinking about this theme was a guy. Sorry, Caroline -- you did have a 50% accuracy probability. Re: [Air-L] Food updates/Presentation of Authentic Self
by RBerkman＠aol.com 04 Nov '09

Re: authenticity of the presentation of a more"true/actual self" on Facebook. There has been an interesting debate in some circles as to whether or not one is more honest and an accurate portrayal of self on a site like Facebook where there is a high level of authentication versus Twitter where there is little to none. Some say that because in an authenticated site one is more accountable for their words, that therefore one is going to be more honest and present more who they "really are". (This is important for market researchers in particular who want to have some higher level of assurance that who they are reaching is who they *think/assume* they are reaching). But others have presented a counter argument that the possibility of being anonymous and NON-accountable on a site like Twitter actually frees a person up to be more honest and "who they really are" since they don't have to be worried about "who is looking".... reminder:CfP - PRism Special Issue on Online social networks, communication practice and PR
by Erika Pearson 04 Nov '09

04 Nov '09

Just a reminder that the following CfP is still open, with full papers due 5th Feb 2010 - for more information see: http://praxis.massey.ac.nz/cfp_socialnet.html The social networking emerging online is now seen as one of the defining characteristics of Web 2.0 and beyond. From virtual worlds to microblogging, individuals and groups are forming diverse and sometimes apparently novel ways of building and maintaining social bonds. These mediated exchanges between individuals and groups who may never physically meet challenge our current understandings of friendship, communication, and belonging. For communication and public relations scholars and practitioners, such interactions pose a number of signification questions. How do researchers explore these nebulous social connections people forge in online spaces? How do we re-evaluate what it means to be an individual and part of a group in this context? Do these new channels of communication change the way we present ourselves and our ideas? This special edition seeks papers which discuss and explore ways in which to approach, study, and account for the diversity of online social experience, particularly in regard to communication practice and issues of public relations. Possible topics include: * methodological frameworks for studying online social behaviours * theory building (normative or critical) regarding the social web as part of communications or public relations practice * ways of conceptualizing the online self and society, such as; performance, identity, network theory, and their implications for organisational communication and public relations * issues and ethics in online data collection on social networking sites * case studies exploring the impact of multimodal (online/ offline) social ties in research * opinon pieces on using social networks in public relations * critically informed speculation on the future of communication practice in social media (beyond ‘Web3’) * multimedia submissions on a related topic Papers are welcome from all disciplinary areas. Full papers will be due by Friday 5th of February, 2010 and will be peer reviewed. Academic papers should be 5,000 words and practitioner papers between 2,500-3,000 words maximum. Style should follow house guidelines: praxis.massey.ac.nz/fileadmin/Praxis/Files/Journal_Files/ Prism_House_Style.pdf Enquiries are welcome and should be directed to Erika Pearson (erika.pearson(a)otago.ac.nz ).

Food Status Updates and Twittering
by RBerkman＠aol.com 04 Nov '09

04 Nov '09

I also think that status updates and tweets about cooking, eating, recipes and meals add a richness and (imagined) physical substance to a medium that can is more abstract, word based and cerebral. You take in a post about a meal and you immediately conjure up senses: smell, taste, even touch--that are pleasing and missing from these forms of communication. Identity does possibly become redefined on Twitter and Facebook, but I think another thing that is increasing in complexity is audience recognition of the multiple selves that posters express. This is why choice is such an integral part of these media. When we choose to read a post or respond to it, we are accepting the relevance to us of that part of the self that the poster has expressed. When we choose to skim over a post, we have made the decision that that part of the poster's self has no relevance for us. So it is a two-way street, with complementary assumptions regarding identities and content relevance. Of course when the assumptions don't match, we get threads like this one! It might be a case of the exception proving the rule. Shobha Vadrevu Masters Student Institute of Education

Research with social media: looking for solutions
by Marco Bardus 03 Nov '09

03 Nov '09

Dear AoIR-ists, I am writing here to seek some inspiration and suggestions about using social media tools for research purposes, in particular for data management and assessment. In my PhD studies I deal with health behaviour change interventions using new media and social web sites. At the moment I am involved in an SMS and e-mail worskite physical activity programme and I have to manage and look after multiple and distinct databases in different formats and for different purposes as follows: 1) web-based e-mail marketing application and 2) SMS-provider application, for delivering content, 3) contact relationship log file (database), 4) survey assessment tool, 5) regular communication database with Outlook. Needless to say that the situation gets complicated especially due to the amount of time needed to manage all these components. Therefore, I am now looking for simpler, easier to manage possibly interoperable open source solutions that would help me effectively assist in all the intervention phases: content development and delivery, recruitment of participants, online behavior tracking, assessment and evaluation. What applications (preferably open-source, integrateable and inter-operable) would you recommend for doing the following activities? - Communication and content management - Contact relationship management - Online behavior tracking - Qualitative web content analysis (for tracking and analyzing conversations) - Web-based assessment (survey tools) Any suggestion would be most welcome! status updates
by T. Kennedy 03 Nov '09

03 Nov '09

Interesting 'discussion' & statements made about Twitter/Facebook status updates. A couple points I want to make: -not every technology is for everyone: we can't make the assumption that everyone will join Facebook or twitter - some will have no use (or no time or motivation) - leading to next point. -people use technology in different ways and for different reasons: we can't make the assumption that people will use Facebook and twitter in the same way or for the same reasons; ie: some will use twitter to circulate/share info (academic/industry) to their tweeps, while others will provide more personal insight into their day (what they had for breakfast) - leading to next point. -we must be careful not assert/propose ways that you're 'supposed' to use status updates. If you don't like what your network members are posting/updating, don't read it or skip over it - don't follow them/friend them. Creating a hierarchy of knowledge sharing or legitimizing certain types of status updates (professional vs personal) is problematic. Most of us filter our info daily anyway - spam, list-servs, forwards from friends and relatives. Don't assume that you want to read & consume is the same as everybody else. Having said that, in the last year I found that I started self-police/regulate my twitter updates because of this notion of 'legitimate knowledge sharing'. In fact, I've split my online identity & have three twitter accounts - it's challenging to say the least, but in my mind - my audience(s) shape my online identity performance, and seemingly fragments it....
