MediaCommons & open peer review

Colleagues -- MediaCommons, a digital scholarly network focused on the field of media studies, is happy to announce the launch of MediaCommons Press, a new feature dedicated to the publication of open scholarship in open formats. MediaCommons Press (http://mediacommons.futureofthebook.org/mcpress ) hopes to promote the digital publication and discussion of texts ranging from article- to monograph-length, both single- and multiply- authored, in forms ranging form the traditional to the experimental, serving all areas of scholarship in media studies. As co-coordinating editor of MediaCommons, I'm putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and serving as the test case for MediaCommons Press: our first major publication opened for discussion is my book project, Planned Obsolescence: Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy (http://mediacommons.futureofthebook.org/mcpress/plannedobsolescence ). The book will be published next year by NYU Press, but is now available online, for open peer review. Planned Obsolescence focuses on the social and institutional changes that will be required within the academy for digital scholarly publishing to succeed -- changes that will affect authors, reviewers, presses, libraries, and indeed the structure of the university itself. One of the book's key arguments is that the peer review of digital texts must be an open, conversational process, one that draws on the wisdom of a far greater number of readers than the usual two or three anonymous reviewers, and one that focuses on discussion among the reviewers, and between the reviewers and the author. Abstract > There is an increasing need felt by the health library users for obtaining accurate, up to date, evidence-based and mobile scientific information in their daily clinical practice. The need to reduce diagnostic errors, save time and achieve the best decision-making for their patients, has became a serious problem to this group of health professionals, claiming more often to have close to them, a portable library open 24 hours a day. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) have been successfully introduced into the health libraries environment and give the users the opportunity to have the most recent and scientific information "in the palm of their hands". The main objective of this study was to contribute to the implementation of user reference services based in PDAs, in Health Libraries in order to guarantee our health professional users, autonomy and mobility in their work places near the patients. We aim to know, if the European Health Libraries, are fully aware of the strengths and power of these new type of PDA-based services, giving them the chance to offer the adjusted help to this new user needs. The methodology used is based on online surveys, submitted to Portuguese and European Health Libraries, and by interviews conducted with a group of selected health expert PDA users in medicine. We concluded that using PDAs is the future in medicine and the new mission of health libraries is to offer services based on mobile technologies such as PDAs, if they want to serve their users with excellence. The Department of Media and Culture Studies, Utrecht University, has a vacancy for an: Assistant Professor New Media and Digital Culture (1,0 fte) Job description You will teach Bachelor's and Master's courses, particular courses in the field of new media and digital culture. You will supervise Master's theses, and participate in the administration of the department. MCS offers an interdisciplinary and open atmosphere with a young, dynamic team. Courses are taught in Dutch and English, but non-Dutch speaking candidates are required to be able to teach in Dutch after one year. Qualifications Applicants require a PhD, teaching experience on Bachelor's and Master's level, and should be able to demonstrate affinity with the core themes of the Master's programme New Media and Digital Culture: contemporary debates, media comparison, popular culture, identity and participation, communication and technology. We are looking for candidates who are familiar with current debates in the field of computer game studies. Preference is given to candidates who have a research interest in serious games and/or in the notion of play as a conceptual framework for the analysis of media use. Terms of employment The successful candidate will be offered a 2-year contract (renewable, subject to performance review), with the possibility of tenure upon first renewal for 1,0 fte. Surveys of current AND previous computer ownership and use?

All, I'm quickly approaching the end of my doctoral coursework and I am actively working towards my dissertation. As part of my literature review leading into my methodology, I'm poking around to see if there are instruments already developed that address my topic or if I need to develop one. I'm interested in how current and previous computer ownership and access ("digital divide" and "participation gap" concepts) may influence people to not respond to online surveys (i.e. non-response bias). To look at this, I have to quantitatively operationalize the concepts of ownership and access. Moreover, I have to operationalize those concepts in a retrospective manner (e.g. not just "Do you currently own a computer" but "In the last __ years, have you always owned a computer?"). There are quite a few surveys that look at current ownership and access but I have not yet found any that examine these issues in a retrospective manner. My primary goal at this point is to identify existing survey instruments or items that I might be able to use or adapt. If you know of any such instruments or research efforts that might be using or developing such instruments, could you please point me in the right direction?
