call for panelists: Discourses of Legitimation in Knowledge, Cultural and Information Policy

Distribute as appropriate: I'm putting a panel for Interpretive Policy Analysis: Politic, Legitimacy and Power in Grenoble France July 23-25 2010 http://www.ipa2010-grenoble.fr/ Keynotes this year are: Bruno Latour, Frank Fischer, Bruno Jobert, Patrick Le Galés and Vivien Schmidt. I need 200-300 word proposals from the panelists. I need the proposals by 18 November 2009. The topic of the panel will will be: Discourses of Legitimation in Knowledge and Cultural Policy. I am looking for at least 3 more participants for the panel. The idea is that in using interpretive methods, we find certain discourses that aim to legitimize certain policies related to knowledge and cultural policy in our society. The papers should describe these discourses so that in the panel we can present them and discuss the similarities and differences. For my perspective, I tend to be most closely allied with Habermasian and Lyotardian issues of legitimation and the issues of justification described by Boltanski and Thévenot in On Justification. However, any model of a discourse that legitimizes, justifies a policy will be considered for the panel. I'd like to see papers for the panel of around 20-30 pages eventually, but the panel will minimally need to have presentations of 15-20 minutes. If I get the papers, I'll try to get them placed in a journal special issue or similar project. Interesting discussions so far. We use Twitter as a primary communications stream among some of our professors and PhD students at Old Dominion, and it works wonderfully well for the most part. It's flexible in a way I don't think FB statuses can be. Sure, you can use to it update people about relatively mundane, everyday parts of your life. But, given its ties to other services, I think it has so much potential to be a powerful communications stream. It has an inherent ability to quickly network different media, services, and people on an ad hoc basis (a la the Iran elections situation). For me and my fellow doctoral students at ODU, it's allowed us to network with people who have similar research interests outside of ODU. The real power behind Twitter comes when you work through a third-party client that allows users to quickly access some of the other services that network into Twitter, like Twitpic. Tweetdeck is a pretty popular app amongst me and my fellow students. It's quick, flexible, and it has a drag-and-drop feature for images and links that often comes in pretty handy. We've taken to using hashtags to organize tweets into class and organization-specific streams. We track conversations about reading material, research interests, etc. And we use it as a way to disseminate links to information and longer conversations that might happen in other spaces. As someone said earlier, the one annoyance I've found is the overwhelming number of bots and spam. Dave Jones Old Dominion University djone111(a)odu.edu

Twitter / norms
by Barry Wellman 02 Nov '09

Interesting watching the discussion and differentiation of norms on Tw & FB. Reminds me of mobile phone use here in Toronto, which went from shouting (Spadina bus was very noisy) to current murmuring and (mostly) texting. Announcement Update: 2010 International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling, & Prediction
by Sun-Ki Chai 02 Nov '09

02 Nov '09

An updated announcement - note the submission deadline has been changed to Nov. 15. The 2010 International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling, & Prediction (SBP10), the largest conference devoted to social science-related research in computer science, will be held March 29-April 1 on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Campus in Bethesda, MD near Washington D.C. I am co-program chair this year, and am particularly interested in gaining the participation of more social scientists in order to make this a fully interdisciplinary conference. This year, we will be featuring some unique events designed to promote that interchange. The first day will be devoted to tutorial sessions, including those on computer science methods for social scientists and vice versa. Tutorials tentatively scheduled include introductions to principles of agent-based simulation; comparisons of network models in sociology, physics, and economics; and application of computational behavioral models to public health. If you have a proposal for a tutorial, particularly one introducing methods from the mathematical social sciences to outsiders, please send a brief description directly to me at <sunki(a)hawaii.edu> by November 15. The last half-day will be devoted to informal round tables to bring together social and computer scientists for intellectual cross-fertilization, as well as for forming interdisciplinary, interuniversity teams that could work together on grant applications. I welcome suggestions for topics to be covered at these roundtables. Short papers (approx 6-10 pages) and poster submissions are due November 15. As in past years, there will be opportunities to hear presentations from and talk to representatives of the largest federal funding agencies for scholarly research, including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Office of Naval Research, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Conference papers will be published as a book in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science Series by Springer/Verlag. More information, including the call for papers and previous years's programs, can be found at the conference website <http://sbp.asu.edu/>. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. CFP: Where have all the cyberfeminists gone?
by Radhika Gajjala 01 Nov '09

Title: Where have all the cyberfeminists gone? Editor: Radhika Gajjala _______ Submit Abstracts/proposals to radhika(a)cyberdiva.org by December 30 2009. Abstracts should be 1000 words long and should clearly detail the primary research questions, research site(s), theoretical framework and methodology. If you have questions about publication plans and venue for this collection - email me. _____ Call: As Faith Wilding and Critical Art Ensemble have noted "the territory of cyberfeminism is large. It includes the objective arenas [of] cyberspace, institutions of industrial design, and institutions of education--that is, those arenas in which technological process is gendered in a manner that excludes women from access to the empowering points of techno-culture." Cyberfeminism necessitates an awareness of how power plays out in any mediated context and privileges decentered, multiple, participatory practices. In the 1990s, several scholars and activists came forth with Cyberfeminist interventions and analyses of technocultures worldwide and their work connected with that of well known Feminists such as Donna Haraway, Sandra Harding, Katherine Hayles and Vandana Shiva among others. This collection is meant to be an exploration of what it means to be cyberfeminist now - more than a decade after Feminists burst forth onto the Internet scene demanding material access and social intervention both online and offline. What for instance does it mean to be “cyberfeminist” in a time when women are everywhere on the internet as consumers and as paid and free laborers? How does cyberfeminism play out in relation to forms of social entrepreneurship and online philanthropy (such as microfinance for instance)? What role to feminists play in a digital era of social networks, gaming cultures and digital finance when claims are made that feminism is no longer necessary? How do race, class, place, space, ethnicity, religion and nationalisms play into how women negotiate various technomediated environments online and offline? Or, in other words – where have all the cyberfeminists gone? Where are they going... -- Radhika Gajjala Professor of Communication Studies and Cultural Studies Interim Women's Studies Director 2009-2010 233 Shatzel Bowling Green State University Bowling Green, OH 43403 http://personal.bgsu.edu/~radhik

CFP -- Digital Diasporas: Distances, Cultures, and Languages (ACLA 2010, April 1-4, New Orleans)
by Scott Kushner 01 Nov '09

01 Nov '09

CALL FOR PAPERS Digital Diasporas: Distances Cultures, and Languages American Comparative Literature Association 2010 Meeting April 1-4, 2010, New Orleans, La. Despite the continued existence of the book, the newspaper, and the scholarly journal, digital humanists are confronted with the sneaking suspicion that the internet is somehow different, a vast new space that mixes up our identities, our politics, and our languages. Networked texts give comparative literature the opportunity to ask: what exactly are we comparing? What kind of a diaspora is it when we can simultaneously be here, there, everywhere, and nowhere? Who is spreading out, where are they spreading to and from, and what might organize their itineraries? Finally, how do these texts, spaces, subjects, movements, and cultures coexist with and modify earlier media regimes? This seminar will address aspects of internet culture that cross, crush, redefine, and/or reinforce borders; that eradicate and/or extend notions of distance; that legitimate, destabilize, and/or invent linguistic practices. Potential topics include (but are certainly not limited to) blogs, Twitter feeds, YouTube, Facebook, SMS and mobile telephony, listservs, MMORPGs, lurkers, activists, hacking, art, affinity groups, citizenship, affect, nationality, gender, race, class, geographies, histories, literacies. Work representing all theoretical inclinations is welcome. Submit 250-word abstracts by November 13 at http://www.acla.org/acla2010. Be sure to select the Digital Diasporas seminar when submitting. Please contact Scott Kushner (scott.kushner(a)gmail.com) with any questions. Please distribute this CFP to any colleagues who might be interested.
