Thanks for the literature re: interviewing via MSN. I'm just about to start a mini-project on interviewing and focus groups in virtual- worlds (mostly in SecondLife as this makes up part of my target population) and am going to put a lit review together over the next few weeks as well as trying the method out with a few of my research questions in the next few months - so this literature will be directly related to the text-chat elements of the SecondLife interviews! Good luck, Carmen! J. This time for the first time, the EGOV conference will be a full IFIP working conference, organised by the officers of the IFIP working group 8.5. The International EGOV conference brings together leading researchers and professionals from across the globe and from a number of disciplines. Over the years, the interest in this domain of study has steadily increased. The 2009 conference attracted more than 130 participants from 32 countries including developing countries, with 35 contributions in completed research, 25 contributions in ongoing research, 7 projects contributions and 3 workshops. eGovernment research has demonstrated its relevance to practice and consequently has influenced and even shaped government strategies and implementations. Beta Testers Invited - The Public Comment Analysis Toolkit (PCAT)
by Stuart Shulman 29 Oct '09

29 Oct '09

We are releasing a free, Web-based toolkit for analyzing public comments. I invite anyone interested in public comment research or text analysis more broadly to become a beta tester for the Public Comment Analysis Toolkit (PCAT), which is actually version 2.0 of the Coding Analysis Toolkit: http://pcat-help.qdap.net/doku.php?id=why_would_i_use_this_system We launch officially tomorrow, but the test site is up and operational: http://pcat-test.qdap.net/app/main.aspx Starting Friday, you can drop the "-test" from the url. Among the reasons to try PCAT: # This is a free service. # The system is fast, secure and scalable. # It is based on carefully researched principles of efficiency, accuracy, validity, usability, and transparency. # It is equally useful to public and private actors and accessible to all. # It is very easy to learn and you can't break it. like CAT, PCAT should be useful to anyone interested in advancing the science of annotation and replication in text analysis research. ~Stu -- Dr. Stuart W. papers on Twitter?
by danah boyd 29 Oct '09

29 Oct '09

I know many of you presented on Twitter at AOIR and perhaps many more are working on papers about this site (and related microblogging sites). In my ongoing efforts to track the academic work about new social media sites for academics and non-academics alike, I've been trying to keep a bibliography of this work: http://www.danah.org/TwitterResearch.html If you have articles I should add, please send me a citation. I only link to publicly accessible versions of the articles (not locked-in journals), but I'm happy to include any peer-reviewed article in the list. I'm also happy to include scholarly non-peer reviewed articles if there's a publicly available version online. I do not do the hosting myself. This is parallel to my efforts to keep a SNS bibliography: http://www.danah.org/SNSResearch.html These bibliographies help circulate content from different disciplinary, theoretical, and methodological traditions focused on the same topical area. They are useful to scholars, but they are also especially useful to the companies trying to understand what is known in academia about these systems. If you're working in this area, I'd love to include your work! danah

Interviewing via MSN
by Becker, C. (Carmen) 29 Oct '09

29 Oct '09

Dear all, I am in the middle of my phd research/fielwork on media practices of young Muslims in Germany and the Netherlands who are inspired by Salafism. My research involves among other things participant observation in chat rooms and also Internet forums. I have done quite some (offline) interviews with both, men and women. Some men that I know from Islamic chat rooms would like to participate in interviews. However, their understanding of Islam does not allow them to talk to women that are not related to them by family. They offered to talk to me via msn (or paltalk). I would like to prepare myself and I am looking for some literature expanding on the methodology and ethcial questions of online interviews (via synchronous chat). I would be happy about any recommendation from the list. Thanks a lot in advance! Internet research methods syllabi
by Kris M. Markman 28 Oct '09

28 Oct '09

Hello all, I will be teaching a graduate seminar on internet and technology research methods in the spring, and I'm looking for sample syllabi for similar classes. The class will be taught primarily from a communication standpoint (since that is my discipline) with many of the students coming from a rhetoric or qualitative social science perspective. However, the course will also be open to students from other disciplines, so I'm especially interested in syallabi that take a broader approach and touch on both quantitative and qualitative methods. I've been told not to expect that the students will have had any previous methods courses before this class, so I'm trying to figure out how to design a "survey of internet methods" course. Any links, examples, or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kris ---------- ---------- ---------- Kris M.
