Twitter Use In Education > Twitter Lessons in 140 Characters or Less
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 28 Oct '09

Colleagues/ A Most Interesting Initiative ! /Gerry Kathleen Kennedy Manzo / Education Week / October 16, 2009 [Online] The Twitter feed for Lucas Ames' class in American history has shown some lively exchanges of ideas and opinions among students at the Flint Hill School. One day this month, 11th graders at the private school in Oakton, Va., shared articles on the separation of church and state, pondered the persistence of racism, and commented on tobacco regulation in Virginia now and during the Colonial period-all in the required Twitter format of 140 or fewer characters. Those are exactly the kinds of interactions Mr. Ames had hoped for when he decided to experiment with the microblogging tool in his classroom this school year. [snip] In discussions on the DEN, which is hosted by the Silver Spring, Md.-based Discovery Education, Mr. Dembo has noticed a significant uptick in questions and recommendations among teachers about using Twitter, mostly addressing how to simplify administrative tasks or encourage students to conduct research or collaborate with classmates and their peers across the country. Mr. Ames, the history teacher, has already seen some results in classroom participation by students, who are given the choice of participating in the Twitter feed or writing an extra research paper. [snip] Dorie Glynn, who teaches a bilingual 2nd grade class at Kirk Elementary School in Houston, has been preparing students for conversations of their own on Twitter. The students have started following other classes at the school, and across the country, as they get ready to share data on regional cultures, weather, and to play a virtual I Spy game, in which they will hunt for geometric shapes in maps and photos sent from Twitter followers in other places. With scant research on the efficacy of social-networking tools such as Twitter, and few clear insights into the best (and worst) uses for them, there is little agreement among researchers and educators about how or whether Twitter-like technologies could or should be used in schools. New Media Theory conference
by Johnson, T 28 Oct '09

New Media Theory: How Far Have we Traveled? Nearly 15 years ago Merrill Morris and Christine Ogan, in their seminal work ³The Internet as Mass Medium,² chastised researchers for not taking the Internet seriously as a mass medium, noting that the introduction of any new medium must make us rethink basic theoretical assumptions in our field. They argued that the Internet threw some of our basic assumptions into question: What is an audience? What is a communication medium? How are messages mediated? Clearly the mass communication field has taken up the researchers¹ charge to conduct research on the Internet as well as other computer-mediated media and other communication devices such as the cell phone. But to what degree have we reconceptualized our theories or developed new ones to take into account unique properties of the Internet and other new communication technologies? This conference: ³New Media Theory: How Far Have we Traveled?² invites scholars to examine what influence computer-mediated communication and new communication media have on traditional theories in the field such as agenda-setting, framing, uses and gratifications and gatekeeping (to name a few) as well as explore how existing theories such as networking theory, social presence and differential gains have been applied to the Internet. The conference is co-sponsored by The Texas Tech Convergent Media Resource Center and the Communication Technology Division of AEJMC and will be held April 15th and 16th at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words by January 19th, 2010 to Techconvergence10(a)gmail.com. You will be informed of acceptance by February 19th. The top three papers will be published in the Web Journal of Mass Communication Research http://wjmcr.org/. To be considered for a top three paper, papers must be submitted to techconvergence10(a)gmail.com by March 19, 2010.

Dear all, thanks a lot for all the recommendations! That is exactly what I needed. I'll take a look at the literature during the weekend. I'll will collect the answers and send them to the list. I am already chatting a lot with people who participate in my research. So that is not something new. However, this takes place spontaneous, involves a lot of joking and is not always related to my research. I am curious how my attempts at "formal" online interviews (narrative, a little bit structured at least at the beginning :-)) will work out. Thanks a lot again! Dear Carmen et al.... I recently gave a refereed paper at the Emerging Researchers in Ageing conference which compared the four different interviewing methods I used in my study of late life romantic relationships: face-to-face, telephone, instant messaging and email. The paper is relatively brief (only 2000 words), but may be helpful to you. Like Monica, I found IM (I used Yahoo and Hotmail) and email to be particularly good for dealing with sensitive topics, especially in my case as I was looking at issues of love, sex, intimacy and infidelity in older adult relationships - all issues which could be pretty confronting and/or embarrassing at times in the face-to-face and telephone interviews. Malta, S. (2009) Qualitative Interviewing of Older Adults: Offline versus Online Methods. Proceedings 8th National Conference of Emerging Researchers in Ageing. My research involves among other things participant observation in chat rooms and also Internet forums. I have done quite some (offline) interviews with both, men and women. Some men that I know from Islamic chat rooms would like to participate in interviews. However, their understanding of Islam does not allow them to talk to women that are not related to them by family. They offered to talk to me via msn (or paltalk). I would like to prepare myself and I am looking for some literature expanding on the methodology and ethcial questions of online interviews (via synchronous chat). I would be happy about any recommendation from the list. Thanks a lot in advance! Colleagues/ A Book That I Had Hoped Would Be Written Has Been Wroten [:-)] /Gerry Going Wireless: A Critical Exploration of Wireless and Mobile Technologies for Composition Teachers Amy C. Kimme Hea (Editor) / Hampton Press / Cresskil NJ / 376 pp. / ISBN 1-57273-780-8 (hard) > $85.00 ; 1-57273-781-6 (paper) > $ 35 / February 2009 / New Dimensions in Computers and Composition series Going Wireless is the first edited collection on wireless and mobile technologies in the field of rhetoric and composition. The contributors offer rhetoric and composition teachers, scholars, and administrators a range of practical and theoretical insights on wireless and mobile technologies. This collection serves as a resource for theoretical explorations on wireless and mobile technology use as it relates to computer and composition teaching and research and acts as a reference for those in the rhetoric and composition community charged with the responsibilities of integrating, supervising, and evaluating wireless and mobile technologies. Going Wireless is organized into five major sections and an appendix of key mobile and wireless technology terms. In each section, authors represent a range of perspectives as they articulate the roles of students, teachers, administrators, and researchers working with and through mobile and wireless devices. The book provides readers with ways to understand the influence of wireless and mobile technologies by critiquing the corporate and IT perspectives that inform mobile and wireless development and integration and seeking out new tropes for learning, teaching, and researching. Drawing on interviews and surveys, rhetorical analyses, and theoretical explorations of wireless and mobile devices, the authors enact a range of methodologies to make claims for reflective approaches to research and teaching with wireless and mobile devices. The contributors share their perspectives on the impact of these technological shifts and situate their experiences in relationship to rhetoric and composition as a field. Authors in this collection argue for complex articulations of histories, deployments, integrations, and social factors affected by and affecting mobile and wireless technologies. CSCW 2010 workshop CfP Revisiting Research Ethics in the Facebook Era: Challenges in Emerging CSCW Research Date: Feb 6, 2010 Location: Savannah, Georgia ORGANIZERS: Amy Bruckman, Georgia Institute of Technology Karrie Karahalios, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Robert E. Kraut, Carnegie Mellon University Erika Shehan Poole, Georgia Institute of Technology John C. Thomas, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center Sarita Yardi, Georgia Institute of Technology ABSTRACT: New research paradigms in CSCW come with unforeseen ethical challenges. This workshop will focus on methodological challenges in doing Internet research, with a focus on: • data collection and analysis • differing ethical norms in various research communities studying the Web • unanticipated consequences of new kinds of online research • pedagogical approaches and issues in teaching online research ethics The morning session will consist of case study presentations and discussion. The afternoon session will be a mock debate format, where participants separate into teams and argue whether or not they think the research can be conducted ethically and workshop organizers act as an ethics review board. In constructing their arguments, participants will be encouraged to brainstorm topics like possible unanticipated effects of the research, handling real outcomes (e.g. if something goes wrong), alternative methods and approaches for carrying out the research ethically, and policy and best practice implications. The afternoon debates should be challenging but fun. PARTICIPATION: Instead of traditional position papers, participants should submit a case study (can be more than one) of up to four pages describing an ethical issue that they find particularly tricky or controversial with pro and con arguments for both sides, as well as a brief cover letter describing their research interests and background in this topic. Submissions should be formatted in standard ACM SIGHI format and submitted in either Adobe PDF (.pdf) or Microsoft Word document format (.doc or .docx) to cscwethics(a)gmail.com by November 20, 2009. IMPORTANT DATES: Submission deadline Nov 20, 2009 Notification Dec 16, 2009 Workshop Date Feb 6, 2010 WEBSITE: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~yardi/ethics-cscw2010.htm

Colleagues/ The Streaming Audio/Video Is Now Available For This Most Informative Presentation I Had The Opportunity To Attend. /Gerry Women in HCI Lecture / Allison Druin / University of Maryland / October 9, 2009 / Noon / Howe Hall / Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium / Iowa State University Abstract > For many children (ages 2-12) in the United States, mobile technologies are now an integral part of their everyday living and play experiences. They commonly use mobile phones, netbooks, pen-based computing, GPSs, computer-enhanced toys and much more. But this is not the case for all children. There are still young people who live in places where mobile technologies are just becoming affordable. Others live in areas where there is no cell phone service at all. And still other children live in places where basic living necessities outweigh the need for electronic technologies. There are extreme differences in children's opportunities and challenges for learning with new technologies. Therefore, in my talk I will discuss how to approach designing for these diverse children. This talk is not about how to make mobile technologies. It is about how to make BETTER mobile technologies for the world's children. I will demonstrate some of our newest work at the Human-Computer Interaction Lab in mobile collaboration and intergenerational mobile storytelling. I will also suggest how these new mobile technologies call for new approaches to design. Speaker > Allison Druin is the Director of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL) and an Associate Professor in the University of Maryland's College of Information Studies and Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. Her work includes: developing digital libraries for children; designing technologies for families; and creating collaborative storytelling technologies for the classroom. Druin's most active research is the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) [ http://mobile-libraries.blogspot.com/2009/08/international-childrens-dig ital-library.html ] now the largest digital library in the world for children which she and colleagues expanded to a non-profit foundation.
