Mobile Technologies and Library Applications:first post to list

In reply to Gerry McKiernan's query re other applications ? I hope I am correct in assuming you posed the question? As I have been interested in mobile applications and ethnography (for which they must just be - boon) and community cultural development projects. Using online applications such as i.o. drop, bambuser, eBOX, and similar, linking maps, GPS...it's endless, the possibilites for producing data...but also a whole tonne of other goodies community wise. i apologise for not providing links, this is my first time and i am excited! Is there any marketing data about whether advertising/spamming on Twitter pays off? social science research for the hi-tech sector

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about social scientific research for the hi-tech sector? (That's "for", not "on".) Has anyone given thought to the question of how to make a convincing case to hi-tech companies for investing in sociological studies of their fields of operation? PLoS ONE 4(9): e6968. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0006968 Abstract Background Epidemiologists and ecologists often collect data in the field and, on returning to their laboratory, enter their data into a database for further analysis. The recent introduction of mobile phones that utilise the open source Android operating system, and which include (among other features) both GPS and Google Maps, provide new opportunities for developing mobile phone applications, which in conjunction with web applications, allow two-way communication between field workers and their project databases. Data collection frameworks utilising mobile phones with data submission to and from central databases are widely applicable and can give a field worker similar display and analysis tools on their mobile phone that they would have if viewing the data in their laboratory via the web. We demonstrate their utility for epidemiological data collection and display, and briefly discuss their application in ecological and community data collection. Furthermore, such frameworks offer great potential for recruiting 'citizen scientists' to contribute data easily to central databases through their mobile phone. TV in dorms

Kevin's point about dorm TVs may be a tangent, but certainly related to the shifting media ecosystem. I don't think his experience is an anomaly - that's the policy at Middlebury as well, and I think it's true at a lot of residential colleges that cable feeds are limited to common areas or must be purchased as an add-on to a suite. It used to be a real factor limiting the way people consumed media, as in-room TVs were only for gaming or videotapes/DVDs, and common areas were the way that students watched current TV. But today, my students gather only for "appointment viewing" (weekly Office, Grey's Anatomy, 24, or Lost viewing seem to be most common), and watch everything else online via Hulu or BitTorrent (usually alone or with a friend). There is also NAPA (National Association of Practicing Anthropologists), SfAA (Society for Applied Anthropology), and BAAPA (Bay Area Association of Practicing Anthropologists). These are all anthropologists true, but some members of those organizations work in the tech sector, especially BAAPA since that IS the culture 'round these parts. More and more companies are starting to see the use of anthropology/sociology in their research plans. IBM has several social scientists as well. I know Nokia has also hired them in the past; Apple has some, Cisco hires contractors. Generally, though, the title of "Sociologist" or "Anthropologist" is not conferred... you're a User Researcher or User Experience Researcher or something along that line. if i could get a job in high tech where i could have "Anthropologist" on my business card, i'd be a happy camper. We had 1 TV when I was a kid and which program to watch became a matter of negotiations-we took turns selecting programs for the week each Monday rotating the order of who selected (Dad was always 1st). As kids, we would deal with siblings: if you pick this then I will pick that for you or I know you like this program, I will pick it so we will be sure to get to see it--if they didn't help me then next time I would pick something that would conflict with their program--taught us good skills. People today do not need to consider others in selecting their environment and it shows for sure--"I am the center of the universe, just show me what I want, or what will interest me, or what I will buy..." I was allowed to watch from 5-6:30 now there is a special program for mornings which is aimed at a broad spectrum of viewers, than there is program for elderly, at midday starts the program for kids and at noon the shows for youngsters, teenagers and twens. we live in a country where national tv has two channels. one for viewers 50+ and one for the advertiser-relevant twens-40s. I think that it is a very true observation, that nowadays shows are for different groups of viewers - which was not so when shows were made for families (I dream of Jeannie, Falconcrest, Dallas to name a few). I do think that the advertising industry plays a big role in this change when cartoons are made for TV which are made for different age groups and before and between them the ads are tailor- made for the program.
