Hi again. I hope this reaches you this time... -----Original Message----- From: Kayla Hales Sent: Tuesday, October 13, 2009 7:56 PM To: 'air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org' Subject: Re: [Air-L] Do you use electronic communication to maintain Hi Rhiannon and All, Yes, my study is IRB approved. This wasn't stated in the abridged recruitment announcement I posted to the list; thank you for bringing this to my attention. The longer announcement (which I didn't post because it was too large for the list) has the following noted: "This is a Pennsylvania State University affiliated study being conducted, in partial completion of the requirements for the degree of doctor of philosophy in Information Sciences and Technology (IST), under the direction of Dr. Lynette Kvasny - Associate Professor in IST. IRB#30284" Hope that clarifies! Many thanks to those who have already participated! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=8MIpVc4vi2vDQ_2bUXEqV_2bXw_3d_3d Regards, Kayla D. iPhone The Body Electric > Apps Visualize Human Anatomy
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 14 Oct '09

14 Oct '09

Colleagues/ Remarkable ! /Gerry Press Release > Oct. 8, 2009 - University of Utah researchers created new iPhone programs - known as applications or "apps" - to help scientists, students, doctors and patients study the human body, evaluate medical problems and analyze other three-dimensional images. The three iPhone apps are available via Apple Inc.'s online iTunes App Store: ImageVis3D Mobile lets iPhone users easily display, rotate and otherwise manipulate 3-D images of medical CT and MRI scans, and a wide range of scientific images, from insects to molecules to engines. This free app is based on computer software from the university's Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute AnatomyLab allows students to conduct a "virtual dissection" by providing images of a real human cadaver during 40 separate stages of dissection. Just hit the "View Cadaver" button. The software, which sells for $9.99, was designed by biology Professor-Lecturer Mark Nielsen and two University of Utah students, including his son. My Body, a scaled-down version of AnatomyLab, sells for $1.99 and is intended for the general public, including "anyone curious about what their body looks like," Nielsen says. Another iPhone app from the SCI Institute is in development. Named ViSUS, it now allows users of desktop and laptop computers - and soon iPhones - to quickly and easily analyze and edit massive image files containing hundreds of gigabytes of data. [snip] Visualizing in Three Dimensions ImageVis3D Mobile is based on similar software for desktop and laptop computers. It performs "3-D volume visualization" or "volume rendering," which means "it makes realistic 3-D pictures from medical image data and other scientific and engineering data," Johnson says. [snip] View a Cadaver - in 40 Layers AnatomyLab had its roots when Nielsen, who has worked at the university 24 years, coauthored an anatomy textbook. Nielsen and Shawn Miller, a University of Utah Ph.D. student in anthropology, then designed software on DVD named "Real Anatomy" to accompany the text. "It allows you to dissect a cadaver on a computer," Nielsen says.[snip] [snip] "It's aimed at students who want to learn anatomy," Nielsen says. "There's no substitute for real dissection, but a lot of students in the undergraduate world don't have access to cadavers in anatomy lab. So we tried to provide them with a realistic lab setting on their phone." MyBody - which Nielsen calls "a watered-down version of AnatomyLab for the general public" - went on sale in August. Nielsen now is preparing a third iPhone application "to help people learn the muscular system in body." Massive Images in the Palm of Your Hand Meanwhile, the SCI Institute is proceeding with development of an iPhone version of ViSUS. [snip] The iPhone app can be used by scientists, doctors, engineers or "anybody who needs to manipulate or view lots of high-resolution images, whether photographs, medical images like CT scans or geographic images like you would find in Google Earth satellite images," says Johnson. [snip] "We are able to view pieces of that interactively on the iPhone," either looking at the entire image (at lower resolution) or zooming in and looking at parts of the image in high resolution - at a faster speed and with less processing than software such as Google Earth, Johnson says. The images can be displayed, manipulated and analyzed on a PC or laptop - and soon on an iPhone - even though the image data remain on a server. "That's the cool thing," says Johnson. "You can have the data sitting elsewhere, yet you can still view it, display it and manipulate it on your iPhone," even though "the data set size can be much, much larger than the memory on the iPhone." iPhone App: Super Research Idea Generator!
by shira chess 14 Oct '09

14 Oct '09

Hi everyone, A friend of mine (a grad student at RPI) designed a research idea generator iPhone app! It's currently free at the iPhone store... so enjoy! (The info is listed in his email below.) -shira ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jason Zalinger <jasonzalinger(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 6:08 AM Subject: My iPhone / iPod Touch App! To: Jay <jasonzalinger(a)gmail.com> Greetings Friends New and Old! I wanted to share with you the iPhone/iPod Touch application I designed with RPI undergraduate Devin Ross. Our app is called Super Research Idea Generator! It's live on the iTunes Store! http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=327725668… This is my first app, and we were looking for a niche. Sometimes the research questions work great. Sometimes they are a little goofy. You have to use your imagination. It's actually kind of fun and stimulating to click "refresh" and see what sort of questions pop up--at least I think so. This app is meant to help any students, writers, journalists and teachers of media/technology to formulate good research questions to provoke thought for discussion or frame a paper. You can even add your own words, and email questions you want to save. It's free for now, but eventually we will charge (probably just $.99). Of course, free promotion codes always available for friends, family and potential employers :) Spread the word! All criticism/feedback is welcome and encouraged. Even if you don't like it, tell us why! Thanks! Jay

Quantitative Data on Internet Usage in India
by Nishant Shah 14 Oct '09

14 Oct '09

Dear All, The Centre for Internet and Society, in collaboration with the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore, is in the process of formulating a Networked Higher Education Initiative which seeks to look at the digital turn in higher education in India. We are in the process of consolidating a document with some key concepts in the area, but are also hoping to put together some statistical data about usage in the country. My own work has always been more in the field of qualitative analysis, and I was wondering if people here are familiar with some quantitative studies done about India, in the following three areas: 1. Internet and access in India 2. Computer use and access in India 3. Mobile phone usage and access in India. If, apart from the basic details, there are any leads for statistics of stratified groups and statistics in the context of schools and universities, that would be fantastic. If you have any leads on studies that you are familiar with, or organisations/people working in the area and can put me in touch with them, it would be very helpful. Thanks Nishant -- Nishant Shah Doctoral Candidate, CSCS, Bangalore. Director (Research), Centre for Internet and Society,( www.cis-india.org ) Asia Awards Fellow, 2008-09 # 00-91-9740074884
