Exploring Childhood Studies, A Graduate Student Conference Department of Childhood Studies Rutgers University, Camden The Department of Childhood Studies Graduate Student Organization at Rutgers University, Camden, invites submissions for paper presentations for their first formal graduate student conference to be held April 9, 2010 on the Camden, NJ campus. Graduate students from all disciplines who are engaged in research relating to children and childhood are encouraged to submit proposals. The field of childhood studies engages in both theoretical and empirical study of children and childhood within historical, contemporary, interdisciplinary, multi-cultural, state, national, and global contexts. The interdisciplinary nature of the field is one of its greatest strengths and the core of its remarkable potential for scholarly advancement, but also leaves the field open for exploration and interrogation, and its borders difficult, if not impossible, to define. The Exploring Childhood Studies conference proposes defining Childhood Studies by "doing" childhood studies. We seek papers that investigate childhood as a construct, children as a category, or the child as a real living human as their central focus, providing critical thought and insight while locating them in different contexts, fields, and ideologies. We invite proposals from all disciplines, including education, literature, economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, law, political science, history, criminology, philosophy, medicine, religion, film studies, and cultural studies as well as multi-disciplinary scholarly work. The range of possible topics includes: war, health, rights, gender, poverty, wealth, policy, ethics, popular culture, globalization, school, family, home, sexuality, community, social constructions, theorizations and representations of children and childhood in all modes of fiction. Submission: 250-word abstract plus cover letter with name, current level of graduate study, affiliated university, and email address to m_modica(a)vfcc.edu . Colleagues -- A graduate student of ours is returning to China where she will be a professor. She has been asked to compile a list of essential books in the area of computer-mediated communication for her university's library to purchase. I gave her some recommendations, but thought I would put the question to you for a broader sweep. Dear all, How much of the Internet is carried across oceans versus overland? I know it can have different answers, depending on the definition of actual traffic, bandwidth capacity, etc. Still, I just want to know *roughly* how much of the Internet is maritime and continental. Hi all: What key pieces of scholarly work would be good to read to prepare to give a talk to an industry that's doing a craptastic job of using social media? It seems to think of social media primarily as broadcast media Anything basic about social media? Or on post-teens that's not Pew? (I was asked to help organize this panel for the primary annual industry meeting, and I've arranged someone from Pew to be on it to talk about Pew's social media data.) This industry is particularly interested in attracting young adults in their 20s and 30s. I'm only really interested in scholarly work. That's what I'll be there representing: academic research. As a truly integrated academic unit, the department seeks applicants with a strong new media background who can further develop the vibrant area of new media studies while contributing to the intersections of new media and other core and emergent areas of emphasis within the department. Specifically, strong candidates will have teaching and research expertise at the intersection of new media and one or more of the following areas: strategic communication, convergence journalism, environmental communication, health communication, and/or organizational communication. Successful applicants will demonstrate the capacity to contribute to the graduate and undergraduate programs in both new media studies and the area(s) of intersection as claimed and teach courses that are theoretical and issue oriented as well as those that emphasize practical application. Highly qualified applicants will have attained (or nearly so) a Ph.D. in communication or a closely related discipline or interdisciplinary program and they will demonstrate appropriate technical knowledge; a record of or demonstrated potential for teaching excellence; and the promise or clear evidence of a productive research or creative scholarship program.
