Interested authors should submit a 6-page summary of their original and unpublished work including 5 keywords in the IEEE format to the track chair. TV help wanted

I'm writing a big piece in which a part is familistic comparing TV shows of the 1950s-1970s (Father Knows Best > Happy Days) to more networked family shows of today, in which household members go their separate ways, but are linked by ICTs and mobiles. I can think of modern shows like Seinfeld and Sex and the City, but they have only single folks. Can anyway cite decent networked family shows. PhD Scholarships in New Media Services with Smart Services CRC The Smart Services CRC is a $120 million, commercially focused collaborative research initiative, developing innovation, foresight and productivity improvements for the services sector. Services are the largest sector of the economy representing approximately 80% of Australia’s GDP and 85% of employment. Within the services industries Smart Services’ initial programs will be customer-focused with outcomes translatable across the whole services sector. Initial research outcomes and demonstrators will principally be associated with the digital media, finance and government sectors. In order to achieve these goals, Smart Services CRC will be supporting research higher degree students at PhD and Masters level through scholarships, top-ups and in-kind support for research, travel, conferences etc. As a partner in Smart Services CRC, the Queensland University of Technology is offering scholarship packages for 2009. Research higher degree students with CRC scholarships will have access to the full range of resources offered by QUT (access to equipment and facilities, Grants-in-Aid, teaching opportunities etc.), as well as the opportunity to work with leading industry partners in the media, finance and government sectors on projects of direct real-world relevance through Smart Services CRC. The New Media Services program at QUT is focused on research questions such as: · What are innovative business models for new media? Can international case studies identify new opportunities for media service industries in an era of Web 2.0 that goes beyond the mass communications model? · What new opportunities for news are enabled by digital media, including computational journalism, news visualization and citizen journalism? · What opportunities exist to “harness the hive” of social media in advertising, marketing and integrated marketing communication? · Can the development of digital communities and the nurturing of digital ecosystems be applied across the service industries? Led by the Creative Industries Faculty and the Faculty of Business, the New Media Servceis program provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with industry partners across the media and government sectors on aligning research activity with industry goals and strategies in the emergent digital media environment. Netnomusicology?

Hi everyone! I'm rather new on this list, and must begin with expressing my appreciation for all of the good tips and interesting, helpful and constructive discussions here! Well, I'm writing a dissertation about childrens (ages ca. 9-13) musical experiences on the net, to put it pretty simple. And since I am an ethnomusicologist I plan to do a netnography (or whatever one may call performing ethnographic fieldwork on the Internet). I've been having trouble finding children to participate though, maybe mainly because of my unwillingness to contact them in any other way than via Internet. However, this is a conscious decision. Lately I've been, for several reasons, thinking about at least start seeking for informants (or focus almost entirely) in a swedish community called Music manager. It's sort of a web-based role play, where you get the play the role of a "manager" for a rockband (or really the role of the whole band), buy instruments, getting them to practice, book shows and so forth. Whether this is a good idea or not, is one of my questions. Another questions concerns starting an open thread in the discussion forum on Music manager, asking for people who want to participate in my study. Is that a good idea? The webmaster and I have been in contact about this, and he can back me up, so that no one has any reason to doubt me being serious. Last, I'm curious if anyone knows any good literature about nethnographic studies on music and Internet (and children), in any way? There's a book called "Cybersounds" (Michael Ayers, ed.), but it's really hard to get a hold on in Sweden. Thanks, /Victor Kvarnhall Ph.D student at the School of music in Örebro, Sweden

Web-tracking tool provides datasets of web-browsing activities for researchers

Thought this might be of interest to those of you studying web-browsing behavior, or just really cool visualizations! ------------------------------------------ A group at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab has launched a new project, eyebrowse <http://eyebrowse.csail.mit.edu/>, which allows you to record, visualize and share your web browsing history in real-time. Eyebrowse is a Firefox plug-in that records visits to websites that you choose to track on an individual basis. Your data is presented on your eyebrowse profile in the form of interesting and insightful visualizations, allowing you to gain personal and social insights and catch a glimpse of what Google knows about you<http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/337791/What_Google_Knows_About_You>. Currently, most web browsing data is collected by search engine companies (Google, Microsoft, Alexa…), which is hardly available for public domain research. Eyebrowse seeks to fill this gap by providing a public repository of web trails. By making this data available, we hope to support the creation of open public services that analyze and report major trends on the web, services that support personalization of the web through collaborative filtering and other crowd-sourcing techniques, and other as-yet unimagined services that require a mass of data about the world's interaction with the web. The focus of my studies is tailored physical activity communication using new media and communication technologies.
