Call For Submissions Symbolic Interaction, a peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and the University of California Press, invites submissions for a special issue dedicated to the application of symbolic interactionism to internet research. Erving Goffman's concept of "the presentation of self" has become foundational to much scholarly understanding of online identity in chat, email, game environments, blogs, and social networks. Yet other aspects of the rich tradition of symbolic interaction -- including other concepts developed by Goffman -- have been largely ignored by internet researchers. For this special issue, we welcome a broad range of approaches to studying computer-mediated interactions between individuals and within communities online, that utilize other lines of thought by Goffman, or the works of George H. Mead, Charles Cooley, Herbert Blumer, James Carey, Carl Couch, Norman Denzin or other theorists in the interactionist tradition. Definitions of the social situation, negotiation of meanings, social processes, framing, and other interactionist principles are possible theoretical foundations. Qualitative studies will be privileged in the evaluation of submissions, as well as those reflecting recent theoretical developments in symbolic interaction theory. Topics may include online communities, virtual environments, games, social networking sites and any other forms of computer-mediated communication. Papers that are supplemented by online materials are encouraged, and space will be made available on the journal's website (http://is.gd/gQ4Z) for authors to place links, examples, illustrations, or further discussion of the published texts. The new Reader, to sell for $399, will be available by December, just in time for the holidays, at SonyStyle stores and via sonystyle.com. The Daily Edition will feature a 7-inch touchscreen, and a high contrast ratio with 16 levels of grayscale; you can read in either portrait or landscape orientation. It will have enough onboard memory to hold over 1,000 standard ebooks and is also expandable via Memory Stick / Duo and SD card slots. [snip] Sony also announced its Library Finder app, developed in partnership with Overdrive.com. Users of Sony's eBook Store will be able to easily locate their local libraries online, and using their library cards, download free ebook content. Different stakeholders – Wikipedians, users, academics, researchers, gurus of Web 2.0, publishing houses and governments have entered into fierce debates and discussions about what the rise and growth of Wikipedia (and Wikipedia cultures) mean to the information societies we live in. The Wikipedia itself has been at the centre of much controversy pivoted around questions of accuracy, anonymity, vandalism, expertise and authority. The Centre for Internet and Society (Bangalore, India) and the Institute of Network Cultures (Amsterdam, Netherlands) seek to bring together ideas, experiences and scholarship about Wikipedia in a consolidated reader that charts out detailed user stories as well as empirical and analytical work to produce a Critical Wikipedia Reader. Both the institutes are looking to organise two separate conferences aimed at building a Wikipedia Knowledge Network and charting scholarship and stories about The Wikipedia from around the world. WikiWars Conference: The first Conference to be held in Bangalore early January 2010, called Wikiwars, invites participation from users, scholars, academics, practitioners, artists and other cultural workers, to share their experiences, ideas, experiments, innovations, applications and stories about Wikipedia. WikiWars embody the spirit that guides an open encyclopaedia like the Wikipedia, referring to the passionate fights that users enter into over topics that have more than one objective points of view. Wikiwars also refers to the various camps that have taken often contradictory positions on the various issues of credibility, authority, verifiability and truth-telling, on the Wikipedia. This conference calls for diverse and varied knowledges to come together in a critical dialogic space that informs and augments our understanding of the Wikipedia. Could list members please list their full names and titles as a signature to their messages? It may not make much difference if you're asking a question, but it certainly does when you're providing an answer or even making a comment.
