The $20,000 2010 Telstra-TJA Christopher Newell Prize The inaugural Telstra-TJA Christopher Newell Prize for Telecommunications and Disability – launched in June 2009 – commemorates the ground-breaking work that Dr Christopher Newell undertook within the Australian telecommunications industry from 1990 to 2008 in representing the needs of people with disabilities. A tribute to Dr Newell by Professor Gerard Goggin was published in TJA Vol. 58 Nos 2&3. The AU$20,000 prize will be awarded to the best original paper offered for publication to the Telecommunications Journal of Australia (TJA) by 15 January 2010 that demonstrates the tangible benefits that the innovative use telecommunications technology can deliver to assist individuals with disabilities. The competition is world-wide, and the deadline for entries is 15 January 2010. The best entries, including the winning paper or papers, will be published in TJA in 2010. Alcatel-Lucent Broadband Challenge for the Sustainable Environment

The 2009 Alcatel-Lucent Broadband Challenge for the Sustainable Environment (the $20,000 Eckermann-TJA Prize) This year represents the third annual round of competition for the Eckermann-TJA Prize. The Prize will be sponsored again by Alcatel- Lucent Australia, who have generously doubled the previous prize money to AU$20,000 in 2009. The competition is known as the Alcatel-Lucent Broadband Challenge for the Sustainable Environment, and is open to authors around the world. The 2009 Eckermann-TJA Prize will be awarded to the best original paper offered to TJA (Telecommunications Journal of Australia) by the deadline of 3 November 2009, demonstrating the tangible benefits of applying broadband telecommunications to supporting the sustainable environment. The best entries, including the winning paper or papers, will be published in the February 2010 issue of TJA. The Prize was instigated by TJA in 2007 at the suggestion of Robin Eckermann, in the course of his 2006 Charles Todd Oration, published in TJA. The Judging Panel will be chaired by TJA’s Managing Editor, Professor Peter Gerrand (University of Melbourne), and includes Robin Eckermann (former Chief Architect, TransACT), Dr Mike Dennis (Australian National University), Associate Professor Craig McDonald (University of Canberra) and Mr Ric Clark (Chief Technology Officer, Alcatel Lucent Australia). Panel members do not vote or provide ratings on entries in which they have any conflict of interest. In addition, thanks to the generosity of AARNet (Australia's Academic and Research Network), $20,000 worth of AARNet's advanced network services, such as high definition video conferencing and international light paths, will be made available for one year to the organization employing the winning authors, to advance their research work. Dear Stefano, I was dealing with the same problem a few months ago. I tested altas.ti and nvivo. As far as I remember there was not other software with the functionality I want. Right now, I am analyzing forum posts (threads) with atlas.ti (version 6). Within atlas.ti I can code pdf's (and mulit-media files etc.) without needing to convert them to rtf. It works quite well for me. Atlas.ti imports the entire document with graphic elements etc. However, it took me some time to find the best html2pdf converter. Since I try to keep one pdf document for every thread it is important that the files do not get too big. Otherwise coding in atlas.ti becomes really slow and sometimes annoying. Adobe is great but for most too expensive. I am using "foxit create" to convert webpages and the "foxit editor" (both around 100 US$) in order to create one pdf document (if threads are paginated) and to delete elements I do not need for my analysis. It takes some time to prepare the documents for coding but I think it is worth doing. Curtin Research fellowships - Internet Studies

Dear all Curtin University of Technology is currently advertising Research Fellowships to commence sometime in 2010. Across the whole university, there are 5 Early-Career fellowships (5 years or less from PhD); and 8 Senior Research Fellowships. These fellowships have attractive salaries and conditions and run for 4-5 years. They are research focused and involve no or limited teaching. The Department of Internet Studies is very interested in supporting strong applications from suitable candidates for these positions. Applicants will need to have very good records of publications and (especially for Senior positions) grant success. Applicants will need to propose a project that fits with the theme of Communication and Creativity (which can be broadly interpreted) and which focuses at least in part on the Internet or related network media technologies. The Department currently has 5 academic staff, all of whom are research active, including a Senior Research Fellow; it has a strong PhD program; and is located in a successful school with a growing capacity to sustain longer term employment. Call for Participation Street Computing workshop at OZCHI 2009 Tue 24th Nov 2009, Melbourne The Street Computing workshop, held in conjunction with OZCHI 2009, solicits papers discussing new research directions, early research results, works-in-progress and critical surveys of prior research work in the areas of ubiquitous computing and interaction design for urban environments. Urban spaces have unique characteristics. Typically, they are densely populated, buzzing with life twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. These traits afford many opportunities, but they also present many challenges: traffic jams, smog and pollution, stress placed on public services, and more. Computing technology, particularly the kind that can be placed in the hands of citizens, holds much promise in combating some of these challenges. Yet, computation is not merely a tool for overcoming challenges; rather, when embedded appropriately in our everyday lives, it becomes a tool of opportunity, for shaping how our cities evolve, for enabling us to interact with our city and its people in new ways, and for uncovering useful, but hidden relationships and correlations between elements of the city. The increasing availability of an urban computing infrastructure has lead to new and exciting ways inhabitants can interact with their city. This includes interaction with a wide range of services (e.g. public transport, public services), conceptual representations of the city (e.g. local weather and traffic conditions), the availability of a variety of shared and personal displays (e.g. public, ambient, mobile) and the use of different interaction modes (e.g. tangible, gesture-based, token-based). This workshop solicits papers that address the above themes in some way. We encourage researchers to submit work that deals with challenges and possibilities that the availability of urban computing infrastructure such as sensors and middleware for sensor networks pose. This includes new and innovative ways of interacting with and within urban environments; user experience design and participatory design approaches for urban environments; social aspects of urban computing; and other related areas. TOPICS This workshop encompasses a broad range of research disciplines. The possible topics for discussion at this workshop are therefore also wide-ranging, and include: • Ubiquitous computing for urban environments • People as sensors/ad hoc infrastructure • Large-scale social interfaces • User experience and interaction design for the city (e.g., gesturing in the large) • New and innovative urban interfaces • Discovering urban computing components • Urban “mashups” • Designing for participation on an urban scale • Development and engineering practices for urban computing • Design methodologies for urban computing • Privacy and Policy WORKSHOP GOALS Urban computing research draws on fundamental research from disparate fields: HCI, ubiquitous computing, distributed computing, sociology and many others. It is, perhaps, at the cross-section of these fields that the most interesting opportunities for urban computing research lay. The goal of this workshop is to examine the technical developments and social practices within the sphere of “street computing” and identify the really important areas of future research. Our goals can be summarised as follows: 1. Inspiring presentations. The authors of accepted papers will have the opportunity to inspire, garner feedback and grow ideas through their presentations. 2. Vibrant open discussion. All workshop participants will engage in an open discussion during which they may draw links between the presented papers, propose directions for future research, suggest non- directions for future research. 3. Identification of research areas. At the end of the day, we will assimilate the workshop findings into a set of important research questions that we agree must be addressed as a priority. WORKSHOP FORMAT The authors of each accepted paper will be allocated time to present their work to the workshop participants. The duration of each presentation will be decided at a later date. Depending on the number of submissions we receive, it may run for either half a day or a full day. After the presentations, time will be set aside for an open discussion of the particular characteristics of urban environments that make them challenging and interesting from a HCI perspective as well as relevant to urban citizens and urban living. Through this discussion, we will map out a considered and cogent set of research challenges that we can all use both to inform our individual research agendas and to identify potential collaborations. At the conclusion of the day, the Telstra Most Interesting paper award will be announced by the workshop organisers. The prize is a Nokia E51 phone, sponsored by Telstra. SUBMISSION The workshop will accept extended abstracts (1-2 pages) for peer review. These abstracts should be submitted to Ricky.Robinson [AT] nicta.com.au on or before 25 September 2009. Web Pages and Qualitative Data Analysis

Dear all, we are starting Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA)of messages taken from Internet forums that we have saved as Web Pages (in HTML format) using the Firefox extension ScrapBook. We are now looking for QDA software that will allow us to analyse these Web Pages while keep the layout intact. Our department has some licenses for NVIVO. http://www.qsrinternational.com/products_nvivo.aspx While in the process of importing our data into NVIVo (HTML files that we have previously exported in PDF) we discovered that this program does not keep the original layout of the Web Page. From a PDF file NVIVO just imports the text. In other words it seems that we cannot use NVIVO for our analysis.
