Web-tracking tool provides datasets of web-browsing activities for researchers
by Christina Xu 11 Sep '09

11 Sep '09

Thought this might be of interest to those of you studying web-browsing behavior, or just really cool visualizations! ------------------------------------------ A group at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab has launched a new project, eyebrowse <http://eyebrowse.csail.mit.edu/>, which allows you to record, visualize and share your web browsing history in real-time. Eyebrowse is a Firefox plug-in that records visits to websites that you choose to track on an individual basis. Your data is presented on your eyebrowse profile in the form of interesting and insightful visualizations, allowing you to gain personal and social insights and catch a glimpse of what Google knows about you<http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/337791/What_Google_Knows_About_You>. Currently, most web browsing data is collected by search engine companies (Google, Microsoft, Alexa…), which is hardly available for public domain research. Eyebrowse seeks to fill this gap by providing a public repository of web trails. By making this data available, we hope to support the creation of open public services that analyze and report major trends on the web, services that support personalization of the web through collaborative filtering and other crowd-sourcing techniques, and other as-yet unimagined services that require a mass of data about the world's interaction with the web. Check out some real <http://eyebrowse.csail.mit.edu/profile/emax/> live<http://eyebrowse.csail.mit.edu/graphs/zamiang/> profiles <http://eyebrowse.csail.mit.edu/users/> and our page stats<http://eyebrowse.csail.mit.edu/search/>graphs, which are accessible from any page via the plug-in . Eyebrowse is an open source project hosted<http://code.google.com/p/list-it/>on Google Code implemented using Django, Javascript and HTML5. It is actively seeking users for feedback and beta testing. happy surfing! eyebrowse team http://eyebrowse.csail.mit.edu/

by Marco Bardus 11 Sep '09

11 Sep '09

Hi, My name is Marco Bardus and I am doing my PhD in communication sciences at the University of Lugano, Switzerland. The focus of my studies is tailored physical activity communication using new media and communication technologies. As part of my dissertation, I am studying the behavior and the attitudes of people using technologies for tracking, monitoring and encouraging physical activity, exercise or other kinds of outdoor activities. I would like to get in touch with the someone at Nokia that deals with the Nokia Sports Tracker product. Does anyone have suggestions on whom this enquiry might concern and whom should I write to? Many thanks and kind regards, Marco Bardus, MA -- Marco Bardus Research Assistant / PhD Student Institute of Communication and Health Faculty of Communication Sciences Università della Svizzera italiana via G. Hi Holly, I’ve recently read the following two books on social media and have found them to be useful for a broad level coverage of social media, especially if the reader is interested in practitioner perspectives: Porter, J. (2008). Designing for the Social Web. Berkeley, California: New Riders. Evans, D. (2008). Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day. Indianapolis, Indiana: Wiley Publishing. Some other academic articles I can suggest are as follows: Stolley, K. (2009). Integrating Social Media Into Existing Work Environments The Case of Delicious. [Article]. Journal of Business and Technical Communication, 23(3), 350-371. Scott, D. M. (2008). Afterthought: Asking the Right Questions About Social Media. [Editorial Material]. Econtent, 31(10), 64-64. Fichter, D., & Wisniewski, J. (2008). Social Media Metrics: Making the Case for Making the Effort. [Editorial Material]. Online, 32(6), 54-57. Ojala, M. (2008). Social media, information seeking, and generational differences. [Editorial Material]. Online, 32(2), 5-5. Hope you find these helpful for your panel preparations. These might help: Preston, E. & White, C.L., 2004. Commodifying Kids: Branded Identities and the Selling of Adspace on Kids' Networks. Communication Quarterly, 52(2), 115-28. Quiggin, J. & Potts, J., 2008. Economics of non-market innovation and digital literacy. Media International Australia, (128), 144-50. Raghavan, S., 2006. Blogs and Business Conversations. And this is an interesting relevant blog post from a PR person closely involved with social media in Malaysia: http://www.davidlian.com/2009/07/can-you-purchase-conversation.html I also would be very interested to see your presentation. I'm researching the monetisation of blogs in Malaysia, but I don't have any formal paper on it yet, but I'd be happy to discuss it more with you off-list if you like. CFP: Exploring Childhood Studies
by Patrick Cox 10 Sep '09

10 Sep '09

Exploring Childhood Studies, A Graduate Student Conference Department of Childhood Studies Rutgers University, Camden The Department of Childhood Studies Graduate Student Organization at Rutgers University, Camden, invites submissions for paper presentations for their first formal graduate student conference to be held April 9, 2010 on the Camden, NJ campus. Graduate students from all disciplines who are engaged in research relating to children and childhood are encouraged to submit proposals. The field of childhood studies engages in both theoretical and empirical study of children and childhood within historical, contemporary, interdisciplinary, multi-cultural, state, national, and global contexts. The interdisciplinary nature of the field is one of its greatest strengths and the core of its remarkable potential for scholarly advancement, but also leaves the field open for exploration and interrogation, and its borders difficult, if not impossible, to define. The Exploring Childhood Studies conference proposes defining Childhood Studies by "doing" childhood studies. We seek papers that investigate childhood as a construct, children as a category, or the child as a real living human as their central focus, providing critical thought and insight while locating them in different contexts, fields, and ideologies. We invite proposals from all disciplines, including education, literature, economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, law, political science, history, criminology, philosophy, medicine, religion, film studies, and cultural studies as well as multi-disciplinary scholarly work. The range of possible topics includes: war, health, rights, gender, poverty, wealth, policy, ethics, popular culture, globalization, school, family, home, sexuality, community, social constructions, theorizations and representations of children and childhood in all modes of fiction. Submission: 250-word abstract plus cover letter with name, current level of graduate study, affiliated university, and email address to m_modica(a)vfcc.edu . Include the words "conference abstract" in subject line, and include name on the cover letter only. Deadline: October 31, 2009. Accepted presenters will receive notification by January 10, 2010. Contact Patrick Cox at ptcox(a)camden.rutgers.edu or Anandini Dar at anandini(a)camden.rutgers.edu if you have questions about the conference, or visit http://crab.rutgers.edu/~bowman/conference/ Visit the Department of Childhood Studies here: http://childhood.camden.rutgers.edu/ Patrick Cox PhD Student Department of Childhood Studies, Rutgers University http://childhood.camden.rutgers.edu/ Co-Chair, Exploring Childhood Studies Conference http://crab.rutgers.edu/~bowman/conference/ "In the depths of winter I finally learned there was in me an invincible summer." --Albert Camus "Don't let your studies interfere with your education." --Colonel Henry Rutgers "the jUdges of nOrmalitY are present everywhere." --Foucault, of course

Essential Books
by Nancy Baym 10 Sep '09

Colleagues -- A graduate student of ours is returning to China where she will be a professor. She has been asked to compile a list of essential books in the area of computer-mediated communication for her university's library to purchase. I gave her some recommendations, but thought I would put the question to you for a broader sweep. What do you think are the books that no self respecting library with an internet studies research collection should be without? Thanks. Nancy

The distribution of international Internet bandwidth between terrestrial (overland) cable and maritime cable?
by Han-Teng Liao (OII) 10 Sep '09

10 Sep '09

Dear all, How much of the Internet is carried across oceans versus overland? I know it can have different answers, depending on the definition of actual traffic, bandwidth capacity, etc. Still, I just want to know *roughly* how much of the Internet is maritime and continental. Any educated or wild guess is welcome. Best regards, hanteng

Research on social media and industry? Or even just social media
by Holly Kruse 09 Sep '09

Hi all: What key pieces of scholarly work would be good to read to prepare to give a talk to an industry that's doing a craptastic job of using social media? It seems to think of social media primarily as broadcast media Anything basic about social media? Or on post-teens that's not Pew? (I was asked to help organize this panel for the primary annual industry meeting, and I've arranged someone from Pew to be on it to talk about Pew's social media data.) This industry is particularly interested in attracting young adults in their 20s and 30s. I'm only really interested in scholarly work. That's what I'll be there representing: academic research. Thanks in advance for any pointers! Holly ----- Holly Kruse Faculty of Communication The University of Tulsa 800 S.
