Appel à contribution - Interactivité et lien social
by Éric GEORGE 07 Jul '09

07 Jul '09

by Holly Kruse 06 Jul '09

06 Jul '09

As promised, here are the sources people suggested to me in response to my query about research on new technology and public & private space. I've excluded the ones that were in the bibliography of sources that I'm using in my current book (and/or used in my last one) that I posted to air-l a few days ago. Several of these I had already looked at and/or have, some I was aware of but hadn't looked at, and some were new to me. Because I mostly just copied and pasted these from email messages, this list is in no particular order and uses no format or style. Apologies for that. There are several suggestions that I will be looking at as I write what is supposed to be my brief (ha) summary chapter, and in further revisions to the rest of the manuscript. New Interdisciplinary Social Science Journal
by jose marichal 06 Jul '09

06 Jul '09

Colleagues, I want to announce the formation of a new interdisciplinary journal, The Journal of Integrated Social Sciences (JISS). We are particularly interested in manuscripts that take a systemic view of ICT's and their impact on society. JISS attempts to provide a platform that fills the void of a unified approach in the social sciences. Our hope is that students and professionals alike will take advantage of this new outlet for their ideas and quality work, to be shared with others, thereby bridging the isolation that often exists between the various social disciplines. We are therefore particularly interested in interdisciplinary and/or holistically oriented projects and invite you to share such investigations with the rest of the scholarly community. >From the Journal's Mission Statement: A major focus point of JISS centers on the concept of "transformations". We do not see the world as a static, unmoving entity. Rather, social nature is developmental and thus transformative in its characteristics. Hence, we especially encourage authors with a key interest in examining how phenomena transform to submit their research. We are especially interested in those works that share a wide perspective for analysis and synthesis — i.e. on what the nature of the "whole" is. This approach stands in opposition to elementaristic observations that focus on parts, which without their relation to the whole phenomena become artificial and meaningless. We believe that works aimed at capturing the dynamics, fluidity, and synthesis of individual and social phenomena are all too often underrepresented in scholarly journals. Please consider submitting a manuscript, or encouraging a promising student to submit their work. For more information on JISS, visit the website <http://www.jiss.org/> at www.jiss.org. For information on submitting a manuscript<http://www.jiss.org/submissions/>, visit www.jiss.org/submissions Regards, Jose Marichal, Ph.D. Political Science Division Editor Journal of Integrated Social Sciences _______________________________________________________________________ josé marichal, ph.d. | assistant professor | political science department | california lutheran university 60 w. olsen road | #3800 | thousand oaks, ca 91360 josemarichal.synthasite.com | blog: contexts.org/thickculture | twitter.com/marichal | 805-493-3328

Hi Greg, There's been some interesting work discussing the difficulty of attending to tasks require the same skills at the same time (e.g cognitive-cognitive; motor-motor; percpetual-perceptual). I have briefly discussed some of this work in a paper in which I propose the term "intertasking" to deal with instances in which it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to conduct two tasks at the exact same time in online and offline milieu. Here is the reference: "Interruptions and Intertasking in Distributed Knowledge Work” National Association of Practicing Anthropologists (NAPA) Bulletin, 30(1): 128-147, September 2008. Hope it helps. Would be great to hear about what you find. Thanks, Patricia G. continuous partial attention
by Barry Wellman 05 Jul '09

05 Jul '09

Linda Stone, now a consultant, ex MSR, has written smart stuff on "continuous partial attention" which most of us do on and off line. (And well before the internet -- ever talk and drive a car simultaneously). The articles I've seen have been smart essays. I don't know if there has been the psych-type controlled experiments that you may be looking for. Happy Canada Day Weekend! email groups
by Liezel Longboan 05 Jul '09

05 Jul '09

Hi all, I'm currently looking at email groups created exclusively by and for members of indigenous groups. These are e-groups hosted by Yahoo. I've tried to search for related studies but the only ones I came across are email lists or list-servs based on professional or organizational interests. Does any one know of studies focusing on email groups formed on the basis of ethnicity? Many thanks, Liezel Longboan Liezel Longboan PhD Research Student School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Bute Building, Cardiff University King Edward VII Avenue Cardiff CF10 3NB

Attention and new media
by Greg Wise 04 Jul '09

04 Jul '09

Hi folks, Does anyone know of work that has been done specifically on questions of attention (and focus/engagement/distraction/perception) and mobile media and/or ambient computing? There have been more popular books (like Maggie Jackson's Distracted and Winifred Gallagher's Rapt), but I'm wondering if there are key pieces of research out there that I should be sure not to miss (in HCI, pervasive computing, psychology, communication, or other fields). Off list responses fine. Greg Dr. J. Re: [Air-L] live profiles, dead people
by Carmel L. Vaisman 04 Jul '09

Hi Mariana. A similar phenomenon happened in Israel with blogs of young people who died in terror attacks or during army service and some after committing suicide. the blogs got a lot of traffic of people writing to the dead but it wasn't just family and friends, in fact they were the minority - many people who didn't' know them read their former entries and got to know them and spoke to them after their death. Another interesting phenomenon was that in a few cases of dead teenagers their parents took over the blog and shared their memories. The blog became very popular with the parent now blogging. I don't' know anyone who documented this in research but I'm doing a long ethnography in the Israeli blogosphere so i had the opportunity to witness that. I thought it raised an interesting issue of privacy of the dead, since parents didn't know their children's passwords but got cooperation from the blog host owners to reactivate the blog. Did you witness anything similar?
