Accessibility, inclusivity and dissolving boundaries are core to the Open 24/7 theme for the design of human interaction with and through digital technologies. The integration of digital technologies into our everyday life allows for a seamless transitioning between open and closed, work and leisure, public and private. Open implies participation and collaboration across traditional borders between individuals, organisations and disciplines. OZCHI 2009 provides a forum to discuss all aspects of openness, open borders, open participation, open source and open architecture. Proposals for demos and posters should be submitted on 2 pages using the OZCHI proceedings template. Ben Kraal, QUT & Ricky Robinson, NICTA Demos & Posters Chairs demos(a)ozchi.org Workshops & Tutorials Workshops and tutorials are half day or full day sessions prior to the main conference program on 23 and 24 Nov 2009. Proposals (max of 2 pages, OZCHI format) should be aimed at a community with a common interest. A tutorial proposal should provide participants with clear outcomes. The workshop and tutorial program is not included in the main conference fee. Workshops are a chance for people with common interests to meet for a focused and interactive discussion. If you are working in an emerging area in HCI, consider organising a workshop as an opportunity to advance the field and build momentum. OZCHI workshops might address basic or applied research, HCI practice, new methodologies, emerging application areas, design innovations, management and organisational issues, or HCI education. Each workshop should generate ideas that give the HCI community a new, organised way of thinking about the topic, or ideas that suggest promising directions for future research. Some workshops result in edited books or special issues of journals; you may consider including this goal in the your workshop proposal. Tutorials are full day or half day events designed to offer participants the opportunity to learn about specific HCI related concepts, methods and techniques. Death/Migration of an online community

Hi everyone Yesterday, the owner of a large online fan community that I'm on the fringes of announced that he was closing the site, and this has caused a lot of uproar as the membership (41,000, with 16,000 active posters) are dealing with the news and looking at what to do next). It'll make a fascinating study to look at how the community deals with the transition, but I was wondering about the permissions involved for such research: the forum rules state posters' words are their own and can't be reproduced without their permission, which is fine, but in such cases where there's a site owner, is it best practice, or even essential, to go to them first and then ask the posters? (The same is likely to apply to the forums they migrate to) Thanks Ruth

Technology designers are working to create and refine presence experiences for entertainment, business, medicine and health, teaching and learning, exploration, art and performance, and a great many other commercial and noncommercial arenas. The PRESENCE conferences provide a relaxed and enjoyable forum for presentation of presence scholarship and applications and (especially in the planned format this year), discussion sessions that allow attendees to join together in synthesizing and expanding our collective knowledge and visions for the future regarding this compelling topic. All accepted papers will be collected in the official conference Proceedings (with ISBN) and will also be permanently available for download on the ISPR conference archive (http://ispr.info) Authors may also be invited to revise their paper for publication in a special issue of PsychNology (http://www.psychnology.org) or another journal. CONFERENCE FORMAT PRESENCE 2009 will have an interactive format in which all participants (attendees, presenters, invited speakers) attend each of the sessions as well as several social events, allowing participants to exchange ideas and build knowledge together as the conference progresses. SUBMISSIONS We invite researchers and practitioners to submit work in the following categories: PAPERS: Comprehensive descriptions of research or design work and/or theoretical investigation within the scope of the workshop. Papers must relate to existing literature on presence and make an original contribution to it. Papers are 4 to 10 pages including references in the PRESENCE 2009 template format (see the submission page at http://ispr.info/conference) Accepted papers will be included in the Proceedings, and will be allocated time for oral presentation. PANELS: Sets of presentations on a single theme or topic within the scope of the workshop. Submitters are encouraged to be creative regarding both the topic or theme and the format for panel proposals (formats that encourage guided discussion are particularly welcome). Panel proposals must identify and provide contact information for all proposed participants and be 4 to 10 pages long including references in the PRESENCE 2009 template format). Accepted panels will be included in the proceedings. POSTERS: Visual display presentations. Poster proposals are limited to 4 pages including references in the PRESENCE 2009 template format. Accepted poster proposals will be published in the conference proceedings. Posters will be displayed on an approximately 28 in (70 cm) by 40 in (100 cm) board during a dedicated session of the conference and will be allocated a 30 second oral preview. DEMONSTRATIONS/EXHIBITIONS: Step-by-step audiovisual demonstrations and/or hands-on experiences of non-commercial work within the scope of the workshop. Proposals for demonstrations/exhibitions are limited to 4 pages in the PRESENCE 2009 template format. Accepted demonstration/exhibition proposals will be included in the conference proceedings and will be presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Call For Submissions Symbolic Interaction, a peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by the University of California Press and the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction, invites submissions for a special issue dedicated to the application of symbolic interactionism to internet research. Erving Goffman's concept of "the presentation of self" has become foundational to much scholarly understanding of online identity in chat, email, game environments, blogs, and social networks. Yet other aspects of the rich tradition of symbolic interaction -- including other concepts developed by Goffman -- have been largely ignored by internet researchers. For this special issue, we welcome a broad range of approaches to studying computer-mediated interactions between individuals and within communities online, that utilize other lines of thought by Goffman, or the works of George H. Mead, Charles Cooley, Herbert Blumer, James Carey, Carl Couch, Norman Denzin or other theorists in the interactionist tradition. Definitions of the social situation, negotiation of meanings, social processes, framing, and other interactionist principles are possible theoretical foundations. Qualitative studies will be privileged in the evaluation of submissions, as well as those reflecting recent theoretical developments in symbolic interaction theory. Topics may include online communities, virtual environments, games, social networking sites and any other forms of computer-mediated communication. Papers that are supplemented by online materials are encouraged, and space will be made available on the journal’s website (http://is.gd/gQ4Z) for authors to place links, examples, illustrations, or further discussion of the published texts.
