ASIST> 5th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium (SIG SI)
by Howard Rosenbaum 17 Jul '09

17 Jul '09

[Apologies for cross-posting] First Call for Papers and Participation: The 5th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium (SIG SI, co- sponsored by SIG-CRIT) People, information, technology: The social analysis of computing in a diverse and pluralistic world. Saturday, November 7, 2009, 8:30-12:30 PM; Hyatt Regency Vancouver The purpose of this ASIST preconference research symposium is to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigate the social aspects of information and communications technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIST. The symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines "social" broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines "technology" broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. This year's theme is "People, information, technology: The social analysis of computing in a diverse and pluralistic world” In keeping with the theme of the conference, the symposium is soliciting work that focuses on the mutual shaping of people and information as mediated by ICTs. According to Horton, Davenport, and Wood-Harper (2005; 52) “the impetus for researchers to consider both social and technical aspects as mutually constitutive as a means of understanding technology introduction and use has a growing audience.” This symposium will highlight research focusing on the social realities of ICT-based information systems (broadly defined) in information science in order to better understand the following: ~ How do difference and diversity shape design, implementation, use, disuse, and reconfiguration of information and ICTs where groups, and organizations work and play in a global environment? ~ In what ways do information and ICTs shape those creating, implementing and using them? How does this vary across cultures? How may such difference be managed in global interactions? ~ What can we learn about information and ICT and ongoing social and cultural change at different levels of social analysis such as groups, organizational units, political entities or cultural systems? Can we harmonize our insights? ~ How may we explore the complex reciprocal relationships among information, ICT, people, groups and the social and cultural environments that surround and pervade them? ~ What are the variations in meanings or interpretations of information and ICT across social groups, organizations, and cultures? ~ What are the moral obligations of ICT system development and use particularly in global communication networks and what are the consequences for diverse ethnic groups? We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the notion of difference – what is involved in the subtle interplay between people's uses of information and ICT and the increasingly diverse and global environments in which they are immersed? Critical analyses are useful because they “bring into question established social assumptions and values regarding information and ... ICTs and established understandings of ‘information,’ particularly as they play themselves out and are institutionalized in social and professional discourses and professional training.” (Day, 2007; 575). We encourage all scholars, both beginning and established, interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. Following last year's successful symposium, SIG SI will partner again with SIG USE to offer a comprehensive full day program. The theme of this symposium fits well with the main themes of the SIG USE symposium, “Collaborative Information Seeking and Sharing,” meaning that there would be a full day of exploration of the question of the transformative relationships between people, information, and ICTs from different but clearly related perspectives. The SIG SI symposium will take place on Saturday morning and the SIG USE symposium will be in the afternoon. Collectively, the two sessions can offer a comprehensive full day program, although each is a stand-alone event. The two SIGs will co-sponsor a networking lunch [Pay-on-your-own] that will take place in between the two events There will be a discount for people who register for both symposia.* Call for papers and posters: Submit a short paper (2000 words) or poster (500 words) by September 4, 2009. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. Acceptance announcements made by September 20, in time for conference early registration (ends Sept 25, 2009). Tentative Schedule Paper presentations: 8:30-10:45 AM Break: 10:45-11:00 AM (with poster viewing) Paper presentations: 11:00:11:45 AM Closing Keynote: 11:45-12:30 PM Lunch with SIG-USE: 12:30-1:30 PM Fees Members $75, non-members $85, before Sept. 25, 2009 Members $85, non-members $95, after Sept. 25, 2009 *If you register for the SIG-SI Symposium and the SIG-USE Symposium you will receive a $10 discount: Organizers: Howard Rosenbaum, School of Library and Information Science -Indiana University hrosenba(a)indiana.edu Elisabeth Davenport, Visiting Scholar, Indiana University and Professor Emeritus, School of Computing, Napier University e.davenport(a)napier.ac.uk Pnina Shachaf, School of Library and Information Science -Indiana University shachaf(a)indiana.edu Kalpana Shankar, School of Informatics -Indiana University shankark(a)indiana.edu Day, R. Call for Papers. Web Studies 2010, Toluca, Mexico. March 3 - 5, 2010

CALL FOR PAPERS WEB STUDIES: First International Congress http://webstudies.info March 3, 4, 5, 2009. Toluca, Mexico. Organized by: Monterrey Tech / Lab. Paragraphe / Europia Supporters: University of Paris VIII / Journal of Mobile Multimedia OVERVIEW The Web may be conceived as an expansive object, an extended space that reaches nearly every domain of life and concerns many different scientific disciplines. This space can be described according to data structures, visual surfaces, algorithmic processes, cultural uses, means and venue for artistic expressions and site of human-computer interaction. While some of these categories correspond to the specific interests and demands of certain fields of inquiry, they also have a practical dimension that goes beyond the confines of academic disciplines and implies the crossing of very different perspectives. One of the most interesting questions is indeed the way in which practices of production and use influence and re/shape each other as well as the tools and media themselves. >From this general starting point, we aim at exploring the social dimension of Web applications as well as the interaction and co-existence of humans with artificial agents – interfaces, algorithms, information architectures – forming socio-technical hybrids that are increasingly difficult to dissect. And our research tools and methods have themselves become hybrid. Mixtures of brains, knowledge and research software make sense of the growing piles of data; they produce new and innovative ways to explore and visualize information and to make the Web comprehensible; and they generate theoretical metaphors aim at understanding the space they are operating in. The notion of Web Intelligence is therefore of particular interest to this first edition of the Web Studies conference. Intelligence, here, is understood in a double sense: first, as the process of interaction that happens not only between humans and technical systems, but also between human actors mediated by Web platforms, the process in which knowledge is produced and applied, information is gathered, interpreted, and used in everyday situations. Second, as the tools and methods that help us understanding the infinite variety that marks this online ecosystem. The 1st international congress on Web Studies aims at providing a venue for researchers and professionals from different backgrounds for discussion, study, practical demonstrations, sharing, and exchange on new developments and theories regarding the World Wide Web. The congress therefore invites contributions from a heterogeneous set of fields and domains such as: Web systems, computational intelligence, human-computer interaction, digital theory, Web sociology, and well as interactive and digital arts. We also encourage contributions from businesses and organizations. Free Culture <FAIL > Research Workshop 2009

Mary, Thanks for pointing this out! A number of us, including the "X woman" (Elizabeth Stark of the Yale ISP) on the committee, have been debating and discussing this problem as it concerns this conference but more important, how it also pertains to the wider field of digital media, especially when it comes to tech and law. For instance, here are some other examples of similarly problematic conferences when it comes to gender balance: http://www4.gsb.columbia.edu/citi/ugc3 http://www.hiit.fi/nccc/speakers.html And there are unfortunately many many more examples. Elizabeth and I have recently started to compile a list of women leaders in law, technology, and internet research to highlight their presence. We will soon circulate the list to get more names and eventually publish on website as a resource for conference organizers or those working on edited collections. Hopefully Elizabeth will also jump in as she has also thought quite a bit about this issue. I have found this problem to be pretty pervasive and have been personally frustrated as well as academically intrigued. Any thoughts about the skewed conference representation? Request for computer-aided survey software or provider
by Lois Scheidt 17 Jul '09

17 Jul '09

Greetings, A colleague of mine asked me if I knew of any software/provider who could support them in their research and while I don't know names I'm betting someone on this list does. What they want is either software or a provider that will allow participants to call in and be guided through a short series of multiple choice questions...lets say 25 or less questions though in truth I think it's more like 10. From their perspective no human operator is required...though having one never hurts. So do any of you have expereince with this technology and either a software package or a provider to recommend? CFP: Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication
by Lina Khatib 17 Jul '09

17 Jul '09

Call for Papers Middle EastJournal of Culture and Communication Editors: Lina Khatib, Royal Holloway, University of London Tarik Sabry, University of Westminster Dina Matar, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London John, L. Esposito, Georgetown University Coordinating Editor: Gholam Khiabany, London Metropolitan University The Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication, now in its second year, is a new platform for interdisciplinary scholarly work that explores transformations in culture, communication, and politics in the Middle East and North Africa . The Journal aims to challenge the traditional paradigms used to understand media and the Middle East , seeing “communication” as extending beyond the study of media in the traditional sense. MEJCC welcomes contributions from international scholars engaged with the Middle East within various academic disciplines and using diverse approaches, whether as articles or reviews of films, books (including novels), and exhibitions. MEJCC is seeking papers critically addressing (though not exclusive to) the following: - the old and new media in all their forms (the broadcast media, the print media, electronic media, and film), whether in or about the Middle East - processes of communication in geographical space in the Middle East (including street art, posters and architecture) - popular culture in the Middle East - the relationship between the media (including interactive communication technologies) and political and social processes in the region - the cultural practices through which power is expressed and politics is performed. MEJCC is published by Brill. The first issue of the Journal can be accessed free at www.brill.nl/mjcc. MEJCC’s latest issue deals with political communication in the Middle East; the forthcoming issue with media, geopolitics and public diplomacy; and the following one with Palestinian cultural studies. Contributions should be original work which has neither been simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere nor published previously. Manuscripts should be submitted through Editorial Manager, which can be accessed via: http://www.editorialmanager.com/mjcc/ Informal queries can be addressed to the editors: mjcc(a)brill.nl

Call for Papers: Canadian Journal of Communication Special Issue: Democratizing Communication Policy in the Americas: Why It Matters
by lshade＠alcor.concordia.ca 17 Jul '09

17 Jul '09

Please excuse any cross-postings.... Call for Papers: Canadian Journal of Communication Special Issue: Democratizing Communication Policy in the Americas: Why It Matters Deadline for full papers December 15, 2009; publication date Fall 2010. Communication policy is an often important but overlooked topic a blind spot - in much social policy research and public discourse. Media and telecommunications systems have become so fundamental, ubiquitous and pervasive that we often take them for granted as enablers, and nothing more, of many other freedoms, rights, and capabilities. Many do not realize the extent to which policies concerning communication resources are quite vulnerable to fluctuating corporate and government interests. This ³knowledge gap² is what this special issue of the CJC seeks to address: how do communication policies affect economic, social justice and human rights, and what are civil society organizations in the Americas doing about this? For example, how do the supposed decline of traditional news media such as newspapers, struggles over copyright, the emergence of new ways of communicating online, questions about who owns or controls the internet, or access to the information we need, relate to social policy concerns such as sustainable development, immigration, environmental degradation, labor rights, gender equity, and other concerns across the Americas? What do any of these struggles have in common related to media, communication, and internet policies? With these ideas in mind, we seek two types of submissions from concerned experts working either in academic or non-academic settings in the Americas: Policy Contexts (i.e., Enabling/Disabling Legal and Regulatory Environments): Short syntheses of the current state of play re communication policy that includes attention to the full spectrum of convergent policy issues such as broadcasting, telecommunications, information (i.e., intellectual property rights and access to information laws), and internet governance policies in each of the following regions: North America (Canada and the U.S.); Mexico and Central America; the Caribbean; Spanish-speaking Latin America; and Brazil. Civil Society Responses: Research illuminating either failed (and why) or successful (and how) civil society engagement related any of the previously listed communication and social policy areas in terms of making policy making actors, processes or institutions more transparent, representative, and accountable to public vs. corporate interests. Simply put, we seek to know why and how communication policies matter to a variety of social policy concerns and how civil society actors are working to effect communication policy change in a variety of contexts. For this special issue, and given our interest in linking media and communications with social policy more generally, we are also interested primarily in research that is informed by critical theory, social justice and/or human rights frameworks and that features praxis-oriented research capturing the various challenges and/or opportunities for public-interest oriented interventions in policy making processes across the Americas. Full-length papers (@7,000-9,000 words) in English or French should be submitted electronically following the guidelines laid out on the CJC submissions website (http://www.cjc-online.ca/submissions.php) Make sure to write in all caps "COMM POLICY" in the Comments to the Editor field, and also to include it on the cover page of your article as well. Please do not include your name on the cover page. Comments and queries can be sent to one or both of the special issue editors: Dr. Leslie Regan Shade, Concordia University, leslieshade(a)gmail.com Dr. Becky Lentz, McGill University, becky.lentz(a)mcgill.ca

Re: [Air-L] Information wants to be ASCII or Unicode? Tibetan-written information cannot be ASCII anyway.

17 Jul '09

The case of Hebrew and Unicode is an interesting one, as it created surprising alliances and cooperation between Israeli and Arab computer scientists. After all, Hebrew and Arabic share pretty much the same problems when it comes to putting them on a computer screen. I wrote a chapter about this for my PhD, which, if you really want, you can see at http://www.sociothink.com/chap6.html. Nicholas ________________ Dr. Nicholas John nicholasjohn.tel
