Call for Papers Community Engagement for Sustainable Urban Futures Special issue of Futures http://www.elsevier.com/locate/futures Submissions close 31 July 2009 Theme This special issue of the multidisciplinary journal Futures is concerned with community engagement strategies that help to inform medium and long-term futures studies to foster sustainable cities and related urban, suburban and periurban environments. Within the nexus of people, place and technology, the issue invites research papers that report on methods and practices of futures studies investigating possible and alternative futures of urban communities, cultures and societies; urban informatics, infrastructure and computing technology; and the implications on a scale between local and global contexts. Topics Relevant topics include but are not limited to the following: Community engagement strategies, methods and approaches to create future scenarios Tools and methods to support and inform urban planning Public sphere, participation, online deliberation systems: polity of urban futures Future implications of urban informatics, ubiquitous computing and pervasive technology such as wireless internet and mobile applications The use of multi-format user-generated content (narratives, photos, videos, multimedia) in urban futures studies The impact of neogeography, simulations and 3D virtual environments to reproduce and analyse complex social phenomena and city systems in urban futures, design and planning The role of social networking, collective and civic intelligence and crowd sourcing in urban futures Urban futures and environmental, economic and social sustainability Organisation and Submission Details Authors are requested to follow the instructions at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/futures . There are no easy answers here, but their guidelines at least point out the issues - and on that basis, I'd strongly suggest contacting the page creators rather than simply Facebook itself. An excerpt: Use in news reports of pictures from social networking sites Social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, MySpace) contain pictures that are accessible to mass media organisations. Persons in the pictures may become newsworthy, for example when involved in a natural disaster, accident or crime. Social networking online is evolving, and while in some ways these online spaces are public spaces, in other ways they are private to varying degrees. In many cases users can restrict access to family or friends. Or they may assume that their obscurity protects them, never contemplating that they might come to the attention of mass media. We use two American national surveys (from the Center for the Digital Future, World Internet Project) to analyze how changes in the number of friends are related to changes in Internet use. We find that friendships continue to be abundant among adult Americans between the ages of 25 to 74 and to have grown from 2002 to 2007. This trend is similar among Internet non-users, light users, moderate users, and heavy users and across communication contexts: offline, virtual only, and migrating from online to offline. Heavy users are particularly active, having the most friends both on- and off-line. Intracohort change consistently outweighs cohort replacement in overall growth in friendship. Danielle Nicole DeVoss, Martine Courant Rife, Steve Westbrook, and John Logie *************************************************** CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS special issue of Computers and Composition, volume 27 issue 3, September 2010 Copyright, Culture, Creativity, and the Commons In 1998, Computers and Composition and Kairos both published special issues related to intellectual property. Much has changed in the 11 years since those special issues, including new legislation, proposed legislation, and the rise and fall of file-sharing spaces like Napster and Kazaa. Further, issues not addressed in the earlier special issue require the attention of computers and writing scholars, including global and international issues related to intellectual property, feminist and ecofeminist research in intellectual property, and issues of cultural cannibalism and intellectual commons. This special issue will attend to these—and other—issues, with a particular focus on the cultural consequences of our expanded sense of what counts as “property” in digital spaces. Questions we invite authors to consider and respond to include, but are not limited to: * Where are the significant intersections between intellectual property and computers and composition? What intersections have thus far remained invisible or buried? * What significant changes have occurred in U.S. copyright law in the past 15 years? In international copyright law, policies, and approaches? * What global, international, or cross-cultural intellectual property issues should we be attentive to? * How might our understandings of “the commons,” the concept of shared or “community-owned knowledge,” and the notion of “cultural appropriation” contribute to conversations on copyright and/or intellectual property? * What are some of the ways in which feminist/ecofeminist scholarship in intellectual property, and understandings of sustainability can inform or extend our approaches to intellectual property? * What are some of the ways in which cultural rhetorics scholarship in intellectual property can inform or extend our approaches to intellectual property? For example, is there a connection between racism and the commodification of culture via intellectual property regimes? A connection with sexism? Where are the intersections between discourses of race and/or gender and intellectual property-related discourse? * Are there better vocabularies, terms, and theories for us to drawn upon to situate and study “intellectual property?” Is it possible to recognize and/or attribute “intellectual property” in places other than formal legal regimes? * How have intellectual property issues become more immediate with regard to the continual growth of and use for digital writing spaces? New media texts? * In what ways can our long history of analyzing authorship and ownership of texts, including our discussions on issues of plagiarism and attribution, contribute to how we approach intellectual property issues? In what was does this long history perhaps submerge issues we might be discussing? * In what ways can writing instructors and researchers enter into public discussions about intellectual property? Instead, this book offers a more nuanced and critical analysis of the complex relationship between violence and belonging, by exploring the ways sexual, ethnic or national belonging can work through, rather than against, violence. Based on an ethnographic study of Russian-speaking, queer immigrants in Israel/Palestine, and also in cyberspace, this book is a fascinating, albeit at times disturbing, journey into the world of hate speech and fantasies of torture and sexual abuse; of tormented subjectivities and uncanny homes; of ghostly hauntings from the past and anxieties about the present and future. The author raises daring questions about the responsibilities of national homemaking, the complicity of queerness within violent regimes of colonialism and war, and the ambivalence of immigrant belonging at the intersection of marginality and privilege. Drawing from scholarship on migration, diaspora and critical race studies, feminist and queer theory, psychoanalysis and studies on cyberculture, the book skillfully traces the interplay between the different forms of violence – physical and verbal, social and psychic, material and semiotic – and offers novel insights into the analysis of nationalism, on-line sociality and queer migranthood. Mapping multiple displacements and fraught belongings in uncharted virtual worlds, Adi Kunstman bravely and creatively opens up new paths to understanding Israeli immigrant queer subjects by figuring with and through the affective dimensions of their political and cultural lives. Utterly convincing and provocative in her assertions regarding the haunted travels, violent histories and discordant discourses of these queers, Kuntsman offers us a work that will be an exemplar for future research in the field. – Martin F.
