CFP: PRESENCE 2009 (DEADLINE EXTENDED)
by Matthew Lombard 26 Jun '09

26 Jun '09

- PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY - [Note: Whether you can join us in November for PRESENCE 2009 or not, we invite you to check out the ISPR web site (http://ispr.info) for a new, comprehensive online presence bibliography and to subscribe to the presence-l listserv for weekday digests of news stories, calls for papers and more related to presence and telepresence. --Matthew Lombard] Call for Papers - Deadline Extended PRESENCE 2009 12th Annual International Workshop on Presence Los Angeles, California, USA November 11-13, 2009 ***SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED: JULY 10, 2009*** Conference web site: http://ispr.info/conference OVERVIEW Academics and practitioners with an interest in the concept of (tele)presence are invited to submit their work for presentation at the 12th Annual International Workshop on Presence, to be held in Los Angeles, California on November 11-13, 2009. Often described as a sense of "being there" in a mediated environment, telepresence is broadly defined as a psychological state or subjective perception in which a person fails to accurately and completely acknowledge the role of technology in an experience. It is a rich, fascinating subject of scientific investigation, artistic exploration and diverse application, with increasingly important implications for the ways in which people work, play and live, and technologies are developed. Designing technologies and imagining practices to modify, prolong and reconfigure the possibilities of being present and co- present has been a continuous endeavor of the human species, from early attempts at constructing communication and transportation devices, to the many current technologies we continue to develop to reach other places and people. Today presence phenomena are the subject of research and theory in communication, computer science, psychology, business, philosophy and many other fields. Technology designers are working to create and refine presence experiences for entertainment, business, medicine and health, teaching and learning, exploration, art and performance, and a great many other commercial and noncommercial arenas. The PRESENCE conferences provide a relaxed and enjoyable forum for presentation of presence scholarship and applications and (especially in the planned format this year), discussion sessions that allow attendees to join together in synthesizing and expanding our collective knowledge and visions for the future regarding this compelling topic. PRESENCE 2009 is co-organized by the International Society for Presence Research (ISPR; http://ispr.info) and The University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT; http://ict.usc.edu) TOPICS Issues of prominent interest include (but are not limited to): * Presence in shared virtual environments and online communities * Presence in social interactions with virtual agents and digital counterparts * Real bodies, avatars and cyborgs * Presence and ubiquity with mobile and geo-location technologies * Realistic action in virtual environments * Parasocial interaction and relationships * Presence as a socio-cultural achievement; practices, preferences and material resources to manifest presence * Linguistic and non-verbal strategies to create, negotiate and challenge presence in mediated environments * Cognitive processes and the sense of presence * Neuropsychology of presence * Presence affordances in digital technologies * 3D sound, acoustic environments and presence * Advanced broadcast and cinematic displays (stereoscopic TV, HDTV, IMAX) * Haptic and tactile displays * Holography * Affective and socio-affective interfaces * Presence augmentation through social, physical, and contextual cues * Presence, involvement and digital addiction * Presence theory; historical investigation of presence concepts; fictions, constructions and realism; transportation, flow, absorption, awareness; philosophical perspectives on presence * Causes and consequences (effects) of presence * Presence analysis, evaluation, and measurement techniques * Presence applications (communication and collaboration; education and training; medicine, health and cybertherapy; entertainment and gaming; art and performance; exploration; teleoperation; technology usability and design; etc.) * Ethical and societal implications of presence technologies * The future of presence experiences We seek original, high quality papers that make substantial contributions to the field. All accepted papers will be collected in the official conference Proceedings (with ISBN) and will also be permanently available for download on the ISPR conference archive (http://ispr.info) Authors may also be invited to revise their paper for publication in a special issue of PsychNology (http://www.psychnology.org) or another journal. CONFERENCE FORMAT PRESENCE 2009 will have an interactive format in which all participants (attendees, presenters, invited speakers) attend each of the sessions as well as several social events, allowing participants to exchange ideas and build knowledge together as the conference progresses. Discussion sessions will be built into the schedule to enhance collective knowledge-building. The language of the conference is English. Please visit the conference web site (http://ispr.info/conference) for more information on the conference program, local accommodations, registration, etc. VENUE The conference will be hosted by The The University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) in Los Angeles, California. The conference events will take place at The Marina del Rey Hotel (http://www.marinadelreyhotel.com) in the beautiful Marina del Rey area. Only 4 miles from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and easily accessible from all major Southern California freeways, the Marina del Rey/Venice Beach area offers waterfront beauty with shopping, dining, great recreation and miles of beautiful beaches. SUBMISSIONS We invite researchers and practitioners to submit work in the following categories: PAPERS: Comprehensive descriptions of research or design work and/or theoretical investigation within the scope of the workshop. Online tools for conducting project evaluations
by Quentin Merritt 25 Jun '09

25 Jun '09

Hi. Does anyone have any experience of using online social networking / learning platforms (eg Blackboard, Elgg, Faceboook, Linkedin, Myspace, Moodle, Ning) for conducting evaluation projects? Or know of any books or articles on this subject? Or using specific online tools such as Surveymonkey for evaluations? For info: . This is the topic for my MBA dissertation . I am about to use one of the above in a pilot study . The work I do is mainly in the public and third (ie voluntary/community) sectors in Cumbria in the UK . The projects I evaluate are typically concerned with tackling inequality and disadvantage experienced by specific groups as a result of issues relating to age, disability, ethnicity, health, poverty, rurality, etc Many thanks Quentin _____ Quentin Merritt Wingspan Consulting Ltd 39 Wordsworth St, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 4BZ Tel: 017687 72730. Does anyone know the origins of this phrase. I've heard it so long, I don't have a clue as to where it came from. I need a proper citation to keep a journal editor happy. thanks, Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. Social network site nomenclature
by Kevin Guidry 25 Jun '09

25 Jun '09

All, Much of the available research refers to services such as Facebook and MySpace as "social network(ing) sites/services (SNS)." Let's ignore for the moment the differences between those four permutations as I'm more interested in learning about why some researchers use "online social networks (ONS)." SNS seems to be much more common, particularly in the wake of the late 2007 JCMC special theme issue focusing on SNSs. Given that both terms are still in use, is there some sort of subtle cultural or discipline-based divide of which I am unaware? Or is this just an oddity that isn't important or indicative of anything more than personal preference? Kevin

PhD Seminar
by Dixi Louise Strand 25 Jun '09

Analytical strategies and methodologies for the study of virtual worlds Ph.d. seminar, September 28th 12:00 - October 1st 13:00 2009, Roskilde University, Denmark Aim: To explore different methodological approaches in relation to the particularities of virtual worlds Invited professors and staff: Associate Professor TL Taylor, Center for Computer Games Research, IT University of Copenhagen Professor Thomas Köhler, University Innsbruck School of Management Academic Associate Greg Wadley, Department of Information Systems, The University of Melbourne Associate Professor Maja Horst, Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy, Copenhagen Business School Associate Professor Louise Phillips, Department of Communication, Business and Information Technologies, Roskilde University Post. Doc. CarrieLynn Reinhard, Department of Communication, Business and Information Technologies, Roskilde University Professor Sisse Siggaard Jensen, Department of Communication, Business and Information Technologies, Roskilde University Assertions about the significance of virtual worlds for innovation, business, and society circulate in media and public debate. Virtual worlds such as Second Life, EverQuest, Eve and World of Warcraft are inhabited by millions of people around the world. They are complex and involve intricate systems and several classes and characters that can be upgraded, transformed and multiplied. In a world such as Second Life, the virtual world resident’s co-design of the world is pivotal. Proficiency in scripting and graphic design facilitates the creation of self-produced objects, and systems exist for trading objects and virtual property in the virtual world currencies. ‘Virtual’ forms of communication, organisation, management, knowledge sharing and market dynamics have emerged along with these worlds. Likewise, a new field of academic inquiry is developing. Online ethnography, netography, and virtual ethnography were terms coined to designate the use of ethnographic methods and approaches to the study of computer-mediated practices. How can these methods be applied effectively to produce good analyses of virtual worlds? In what ways do ethnography of virtual interaction and communication extend and transform traditional approaches to field study, participant observation, interviewing, or discourse analysis? What are the specific methodological challenges when studying practices in which user-based design, transformation and co-creation are pivotal? What role might the notions of ‘laboratory’ and ‘experiments’ play, offline or online? This Ph.D. seminar brings together a number of contributors to illuminate such questions. T.L. Taylor (IT University of Copenhagen) specialises in researching the culture of online communities, e.g. massively multiplayer online games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft, as well as non-game virtual worlds. Her most recent work is on the professional computer gaming scene (such as the World Cyber Games) and the culture of high- end competitive play. Her analytical strategy combines ethnography, actor-network theory and a variety of qualitative methods. Thomas Köhler (University Innsbruck School of Management) has explored the opportunities virtual worlds offer for real-world innovation and how virtual worlds can be employed systematically for innovation management. His research draws upon ethnography, sociology, and in particular, grounded theory. Greg Wadley (University of Melbourne) conducts research on communication and collaboration in virtual worlds. His research applies ethnography, “quasi-experiments” as well as laboratory studies. Furthermore, Maja Horst (Copenhagen Business School) and Sisse Siggaard Jensen, Louise Phillips, and CarrieLynn Reinhard (Roskilde University) will provide examples of their research in/on virtual worlds applying laboratory experiments, participant observation, video analysis, discourse analysis, dialogic communication theory, actor- network theory and Dervin’s sense-making methodology. The course thus explores a broad range of different methodological and analytical approaches to virtual worlds. The course is organized as a workshop where afternoon group sessions are dedicated to in depth discussions of the Ph.D. students’ projects in smaller groups and hands-on exercises with the techniques presented. Participants are required to submit a 5-page paper discussing their own project’s methodology and particular challenges. These papers will form the point of departure for presentations and discussions in the group sessions. Venue: The course will take place at Roskilde University, Denmark (25 min. by train from Copenhagen). Lodging will be provided at Danhostel Roskilde Vandrehjem. Costs: Ph.d. students who are enrolled in the National Doctoral School in Media, Communication and Journalism (FMKJ) will have their expenses reimbursed by the School. For other participating ph.d. students, the course fee, including lodging and food, is estimated at DKK 1500, in addition to which expenses for travel and transportation must be taken into account. The course is limited to 20 Ph.D. students. ECTS: 3 ECTS Important dates: - Deadline for registration August 24th – including submission of 1-page paper outline - Notification of acceptance September 2nd - Deadline for 5-page paper contributions September 24th Contact for registration and paper submission: Dixi Louise Strand - dixi at ruc.dk Dixi Louise Strand, ph.d., project manager Roskilde University Department for Communication, Business, and Informations Technologies P.O.
