SI special internet issue --DEADLINE EXTENDED
by Mark D. Johns 24 Jun '09

24 Jun '09

Symbolic Interaction, a peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and the University of California Press, invites submissions for a special issue dedicated to the application of symbolic interactionism to internet research. Erving Goffman's concept of "the presentation of self" has become foundational to much scholarly understanding of online identity in chat, email, game environments, blogs, and social networks. Yet other aspects of the rich tradition of symbolic interaction -- including other concepts developed by Goffman -- have been largely ignored by internet researchers. For this special issue, we welcome a broad range of approaches to studying computer-mediated interactions between individuals and within communities online, that utilize other lines of thought by Goffman, or the works of George H. Mead, Charles Cooley, Herbert Blumer, James Carey, Carl Couch, Norman Denzin or other theorists in the interactionist tradition. Definitions of the social situation, negotiation of meanings, social processes, framing, and other interactionist principles are possible theoretical foundations. Qualitative studies will be privileged in the evaluation of submissions, as well as those reflecting recent theoretical developments in symbolic interaction theory. Topics may include online communities, virtual environments, games, social networking sites and any other forms of computer-mediated communication. Papers that are supplemented by online materials are encouraged, and space will be made available on the journal's website (http://is.gd/gQ4Z) for authors to place links, examples, illustrations, or further discussion of the published texts. Please send submissions electronically to mjohns(a)luther.edu Deadline for submissions has been *extended* to *September 1, 2009.*

New media and public vs. private space
by Holly Kruse 23 Jun '09

23 Jun '09

A query on my own behalf... The last chapter of the book that I'm writing (I'm currently revising this chapter of the manuscript) deals with issues of private vs. public space and new media technologies. I want to make sure that I'm not missing any key texts or insights. Is there anything that I really must read? I am focusing on fairly particularly on the notion of space. I have a friend who is working on coming up with a social media policy for her university. Are there any examples to which I can point her? You can email me privately or respond on-list if this is of general interest and/or email her privately at nnascenzi(a)rsu.edu. Thanks! Re: [Air-L] New media and public vs. private space
by Keith Hampton 23 Jun '09

23 Jun '09

Holly, I have a paper forthcoming in JoC (early 2010) that explores the relationship between privatism and public spaces. Title and abstract below, you can download a draft copy here: http://www.mysocialnetwork.net/downloads/wifipublic-knh33-dist.pdf Title: The Social Life of Wireless Urban Spaces: Internet Use, Social Networks, and the Public Realm Authors: Keith N Hampton, Oren Livio, Lauren F. Sessions Abstract: In recent years, changes to the structure of people's social networks, the mass media, and urban public spaces may represent a confluence of social trends that constrain exposure to diverse issues, ideas, and opinions in the public sphere. Technological change that influences how we maintain social networks, access information, and use public spaces may advance or hinder this existing trend. This study examines one such technological change: the impact of wireless Internet use (wi-fi) on urban public spaces, wi-fi users, and others who inhabit these spaces. Through extensive observations of seven parks, plazas, and markets in four North American cities, and surveys of laptop users in those sites, we explore how this new technology is related to processes of social interaction, privatism, and democratic participation. Findings reveal that wi-fi use within urban spaces affords interactions with existing acquaintances that are more diverse than those associated with mobile phone use. However, the level of social diversity to which wi-fi users are exposed is less than that of most users of these spaces. Although urban public spaces are not a public realm for wi-fi users, the activities in which they engage do contribute to broader participation in the public sphere.
