finding appropriate literature
by Daniel Jung 18 Jun '09

18 Jun '09

Hi all I need help in finding appropriate literature (German or English). I have been teaching a course in "power structures on the internet" (digital culture, beginner's level), and promised the students help in finding literature for their assignments (which they could choose freely). There are two projects were I would still need to find something to give them. 1. Theoretical philosophy. The student wants to write about ontology in online communities. 2. The impact of becoming an administrator/moderator/gamemaster (online forums/games) on IRL behavior: The connection between (possibly anonymous) being powerful online and having a (possibly different) personality offline. Thanks a lot! - Daniel

Liquid Book - The Post-Corporate University
by Gary Hall 18 Jun '09

18 Jun '09

(Apologies for cross-posting) The Post-Corporate University We would like to bring to your attention an online experiment that is currently taking place titled The Post-Corporate University. Edited and curated by Davin Heckman, it is the second volume in Culture Machine’s Liquid Books series. The volume is available now online and is open for discussion, contributions and open collaboration. Please visit: http://liquidbooks.pbworks.com/The+Post-Corporate+University The Post-Corporate University starts from an assumption that the University is in crisis and that this crisis has been caused by the social and economic characteristics of neoliberalism. Asking the question, Is Another University Possible?, it provides space for multiple answers and interventions. Please visit the site, read Davin Heckman’s chapter, 'Neoliberal Arts and the 21st Century University', and contribute to the discussions, the bibliography and the book. About the Liquid Books Series Culture Machine’s online ‘liquid books’ – to which everyone is invited to contribute – are written and developed in an open, cooperative, decentralised, multi-user-generated fashion: not just by their initial ‘authors’, ‘editors’, ‘creators’ or ‘curators’, but by a multiplicity of collaborators distributed around the world. They are freely available for anyone, anywhere, to read, reproduce and distribute. Once they have requested access, users are also able to rewrite, add to, edit, annotate, tag, remix, reformat, reinvent and reuse them, or even produce alternative parallel versions of them. In fact, they are expressly invited and encouraged to do so, as the project relies on such an intervention. It is hoped that the Liquid Books project will raise a number of important questions for ideas of authorship, attribution, publication, citation, accreditation, fair use, quality control, peer review, copyright, intellectual property, content creation and cultural studies. For instance, with its open editing and free content, the project decentres the author and editor functions, making everyone potential authors/editors. It also addresses an issue raised recently by Geert Lovink: why are wikis not utilised more to create, develop and change theory and theoretical concepts, instead of theory continuing to be considered as the ‘terrain of the sole author who contemplates the world, preferably offline, surrounded by a pile of books, a fountain pen, and a notebook’? At the same time, in ‘What Is an Author?’, Michel Foucault warns that any attempt to avoid using the concept of the author to close and fix the meaning of the text risks having a limit and a unity imposed on it in a different way: by means of the concept of the ‘work’. To what extent does users’ ability to rewrite, remix, reversion and reinvent this liquid ‘book’ then render untenable any attempt to impose a limit and a unity on it as a ‘work’? And what are the political, ethical and social consequences of such ‘liquidity’ for ideas that depend on the concept of the ‘work’ for their effectivity: those concerning attribution, citation, copyright, intellectual property, academic success, promotion, tenure, and so on? NodeXL Workshop and Pointers
by Derek Hansen 17 Jun '09

17 Jun '09

Colleagues, Marc Smith (Telligent Systems) and I (Derek Hansen, University of Maryland) will be running a workshop on NodeXL as part of the Communities and Technologies conference next week in University Park, PA. We have room for additional participants. If anyone is interested, please email me (shakmatt(a)gmail.com) or Marc (marc.smith(a)telligent.com) Even if you aren't attending, I wanted to point out that we've been working on a NodeXL tutorial that I'd be willing to share with others, particularly those who are planning on teaching social network analysis. The tutorial covers the basics of NodeXL using sample datasets and briefly describes some of the key social network concepts. It takes about 4-5 hours to complete with students following along. Please email me offline if you are interested (shakmatt(a)umd.edu) I've used NodeXL in my Master's level online communities course and found it was much more approachable than other SNA tools and gave them a new way of thinking about community structure. See details for the June 24 event below: Title: NodeXL: Social Network Analysis and Visualization tools for Social Media Date/Time: Wednesday, June 24, 8:30am through early afternoon Place: Penn State University, University Park, PA (see http://cct2009.ist.psu.edu/index.cfm) Organizers: Marc Smith, Chief Social Scientist, Telligent Systems - (Marc.Smith(a)telligent.com) Derek Hansen, Assistant Professor, iSchool, University of Maryland - (dlhansen(a)umd.edu) NodeXL is an add-in for Office 2007 that provides social network diagram and analysis tools in the context of a spreadsheet. Adding the directed graph chart type to Excel opens up many possibilities for easily manipulating networks and controlling their display properties. In this tutorial the steps needed to install and operate NodeXL for Office 2007 are reviewed. The NodeXL add-in provides directed graph charting features within Excel, allowing users to create node-link diagrams with control over each node and edge color, size, transparency and shape. Since NodeXL builds within Excel, all of the controls and programmatic features of Office are available. Additional features of NodeXL generate social networks from social media data sources like personal e-mail (drawing data from the Windows Desktop Search engine) and the Twitter social network micro-blogging system. Arbitrary edge lists (anything that can be pasted into Excel) can be visualized and analyzed in NodeXL. This session will provide a walk through the basic operation of NodeXL. Attendees are encouraged to bring an edge list of interest. Sample data sets will be provided. To download the NodeXL Add-in and slides, go to: http://www.codeplex.com/NodeXL. CPF 2.0: Utopic Dreams and Apocalyptic Fantasies: Playing In Virtual Realms
by Andras Lukacs 17 Jun '09

17 Jun '09

2nd CALL FOR CHAPTERS Proposals Submission Deadline: 6/30/2009 Full Chapters Due: 9/15/2009 Utopic Dreams and Apocalyptic Fantasies: Playing In Virtual Realms (Lexington Press) A book edited by Talmadge Wright, David Embrick and Andras Lukacs, Loyola University Chicago Introduction While many books and scholarly articles are emerging on the new area of game studies and the application of computer games to learning, therapeutic, military and entertainment environments, few have attempted to contextualize the importance of virtual play within the broader social, cultural and political environment that raises the question of the significance of both work and play in the modern world. The expanding role of new forms of electronic entertainment, specifically, digital games, in shaping the relationship between people and altering the practice of everyday life, has called into question traditional notions of play and work. In addition, it has also exposed generational fault lines and increased the number of venues for both youth and adults to engage in self-expression. In the virtual realms of the new playgrounds, both utopic dreams and apocalyptic fantasies can be explored and discusses by their participants. Objective of the Book This edited volume is designed to address questions prompted by the expansion of new digital media and, specifically, questions of how to research virtual play, what changes need to be made in the social sciences to advance out understanding of the role such games play in contemporary life, our fears and anxieties around new media, and how new media is changing the nature of what it means to work and play. This volume is directed towards researchers and students in the emerging area of Game Studies, New Media Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, and Psychology. Our hope is to draw attention to the need for a more comprehensive social and cultural understanding of both the role and the significance of virtual realms in contemporary life. Sub areas the book will address include: the theory of modern play, the business of virtual play, methodology, social-psychological implications of digital play, social inequalities and virtual play and fandom. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: • The Nature of Modern Play and Technology - Defining Modern Play (the theory of play, leisure beyond Huzinga) • Researching Virtual Play (methodological considerations) • Game Fans Speak Out (empirical game audience and fan studies) Submission Procedure Interested researchers are invited to submit on or before June 30, 2009, a 250-500 word chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission, methodology and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by July 15, 2009 about the status of their proposal and chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by September 15, 2009. The book is scheduled to be published by Lexington Press (a division of Rowman & Littlefield) during the 2nd half of 2010. For additional information about the publisher, please visit http://www.lexingtonbooks.com/ Inquiries and submissions can be forwarded electronically (Word document) or by mail to: Andras Lukacs Loyola University Chicago Department of Sociology Damen Hall 955C 1032 W. FW: Virtual worlds Conference -- Den Haag
by Johnny Søraker 16 Jun '09

16 Jun '09

6th Annual League of Worlds Colloquium: Online Simulations, Role-playing, and Virtual Worlds (http://leagueofworlds.com) November 2-6 2009 LoW6 Conference Theme: Virtual worlds in education and society: critical, innovative perspectives and practices 2009 Location: Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherlands Keynote: Erik Duval, Professor, computer science department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium Conference Chairs: Roberto Muffoletto (roberto.muffoletto(a)gmail.com) and Helen Hintjens (hintjens(a)iss.nl) Colloquium Partners: League of Worlds, EPN (Electronic Platform of The Netherlands); Institute of Social Studies; Sofos Consultancy Call for presentations (papers and multimedia) Virtual worlds are increasingly gaining global appeal and application. As acceptance of virtual worlds becomes more widespread, what may be the effect on educational and social environments? How does using virtual worlds affect how we think about and understand, as well as design virtual and real social environments? As a form of technological innovation, are virtual worlds subject to the same flux as other forms of economic and educational activity? What are the implications and lessons for innovations in virtual worlds in terms of methods and modes of communication, potential for collaboration, and the recreation and creation of new forms of pedagogic applications of such worlds? Will growth and development of virtual worlds continue; will reductions in budgets restrict innovations, or is there a danger of shutting down globalized opportunities for learning and interaction? This year, the LOW conference will consider how virtual worlds are going global, addressing new educational and social themes and possibilities. This year we are inviting presentations and exchanges that reflect on the present in light of the past, and outline some prospects for the future. Questions addressing “What did we learned from a decade of virtual worlds?”; “Will new, more horizontal forms of educational, social and cultural interaction emerge?”; “Which kinds of platforms and worlds have been able to sustain themselves, and which cannot survive?”; and “What are the implications for future possibilities?”, are a few of the questions that need to be addressed as we explore how virtual worlds ‘translate’ into real-time settings in the global North and South as we work with less advantaged groups in society. In additional to traditional papers to present positions and arguments, LOW is encouraging authors to present their position or argument in a multimedia format. To select this format is “not” to create an illustration but to construct and deliver a position/argument in a non-linear form. Colloquium Design and Format This year the colloquium is designed to encourage and support discussion and engagement by all participants. Sessions are to be organized as mini-panels, linking presentations along similar themes. Each presentation will involve a respondent, whose role is to reflect and initiate responses and discussion. Presenters have 15 minutes to present their ideas (broadband is available), and time will be made for full discussion. The size of the colloquium will be limited to around 50 participants to facilitate meaningful interaction. The language of communication is English. ** Papers will be published in the LOW proceedings and do not need to be read out in full. Authors are invited to present a brief summary of their arguments, with illustrations or a demonstration if required. Proposal categories The League of Worlds colloquium is designed to support the sharing of meaningful reflections on practices, designs and their wider social implications. Participants share experiences, insights, lessons and demonstrate the various technologies involved. Also central this year is an invitation to think critically, perhaps to rethink, what working with virtual worlds entails in a broader sense for social and educational learning and practice. Papers that reflect, in light of virtual worlds, on concepts including identity, social justice, conflict resolution, ‘emotional’ literacy and power relations in a globalizing world, will be particularly welcome. In addition, the place of virtual worlds in wider pedagogic goals and approaches will be another central theme. The LOW Colloquium review committee will be particularly interested in submissions on the following themes: 1. Design and collaboration in Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). 2. The role of the facilitator/ teacher and learner in the VLE 3. Analyzing the learning experience 4. Gaming and role-playing design 5. Pushing the boundaries: socializing new technologies in VLE 6. Globalizing the use of VLE: Issues for Social and Development Studies 7. Critical perspectives on VLE and Social Change 8. Visions and projections for the future of VLE and the social uses of virtual worlds 9. Recent developments and visions for the future Proposal Submission * Submit a short Summary statement, stating how your presentation relates to one of the themes listed above. The statement should be no longer than 150 words long, and should explain the focus and purpose of the presentation/paper. Authors need to provide with their proposal a number of discussion questions. * Authors need to be listed with contact information. Main author should be noted. * Submitted proposals are double blind peer-reviewed. * Proposals need to be submitted as word RTF files to the conference chair at: roberto.muffoletto(a)gmail.com Presentation Format * Final papers need to be submitted in an accessible format (RTF). Papers should range between 2000- 4000 words (6 - 10 pages). * Multimedia works should be submitted via ftp or a link provided. * References should be in the author’s tradition. * Accepted presentations, the colloquium program, and a list of attendees and their proposals will be published on the League of Worlds 2009 Colloquium website. Important Dates Paper/multimedia works abstract proposal submission: Summary, points for discussion and relevant conference theme. June 15th, 2009 Notification of Acceptance : July 15, 2009 Conference fee deadline* all presenters must be registered by this date. Data sharing and collaboration in qualitative research
by Dan Perkel 15 Jun '09

15 Jun '09

[Apologies for cross posting] Hello, I am trying to track down any journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, and technical reports that address issues concerning the sharing of material/data generated by qualitative research, including participant observation, interviews, document analysis, oral history data, or other. By "sharing" this could refer to either of the sharing of material in small research teams, on larger distributed teams, or even with the public. In terms of kinds or articles, I am definitely interested in any perspectives on the topic (either enthusiastic or critical). However, I am especially interested in trying to track down any case studies that report on the sharing of qualitative data in any of the manners listed above. These could either be reports on one's own experiences or empirical studies of others' experiences. Thus far, most of the material I have found has been on the topic of creating archives for long-term re-use and secondary analysis of qualitative data. For those interested in this topic as well, below I have included some of starting points that have been helpful: Hammersley, Martyn. 1997.
