CIS@StanfordLaw is seeking a Research Fellow for the Architecture and Public Policy Project
by Amanda Smith 11 Jun '09

11 Jun '09

The Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School is hiring a Research Fellow for the Architecture and Public Policy Project for a one year term. The start date is flexible. The Architecture and Public Policy Project explores how network architectures influence, and are influenced by, economic, social or political systems and what this means for the role of law and public policy in this space. One part of the project focuses on understanding the impact of current or future network architectures on economic, social or political systems, or on specific economic, social or political behavior such as innovation or political speech. Research relevant to this part of the project could, for example, analyze economic implications of a specific network architecture. The other part of the project explores the interactions between network architecture and public policy. Research questions relevant to this part include, but are not limited to, for example: how can or should the economic, social or political effects of network architectures impact public policy? Should legislators or regulators foster certain network architectures over others and, if so, what policy tools best encourage these architectures? Such questions affect the debates over network neutrality, Internet security or congestion management in broadband networks. The Fellow will work with CIS Faculty Co-Director Professor Barbara van Schewick and CIS staff to conduct research relevant to the project and to write articles or reports of publishable quality. Depending on the Fellow’s interests and background, the fellow’s research will focus on questions related to one or both parts of the project. He or she will also support grants relevant to the project and help with grant-writing efforts to secure funding for the Center’s work in this area. The Fellow will work with CIS faculty and staff to organize and participate in workshops, conferences, talks and meetings with academics, practitioners and policy makers. The position is open to candidates with a wide range of backgrounds. For example, candidates may have a JD, PhD or Master’s degree in one of the following fields: * Law * Computer Science or Network Engineering * Technology and Public Policy * Communications * Economics * Management Science The candidate should have excellent analytical and writing skills and experience working in a research environment, designing and implementing projects either independently or in small teams. Although candidates are not expected to have experience with all parts of the Architecture and Public Policy Project and are encouraged to bring complementary experience from other domains, the Fellow should have experience with at least one of the parts of the Architecture and Public Policy Project. He or she should be interested in working in and helping to foster a multi-disciplinary environment. Some background in economics is useful, but not required. The position is for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal if funding is available. The start date is flexible. Salary will be based on background and experience and includes benefits. Applicants must apply online via the Stanford Jobs website at http://jobs.stanford.edu/find_a_job.html Job number 34423. Please also submit: * A cover letter with a detailed statement of interest * A curriculum vitae * Relevant transcript(s) * An English-language sample of your recent research or academic writing * (Upon request) two letters of recommendation Please send all materials by email to Amanda Smith at the following e-mail address: asmith(a)law.stanford.edu. E-Conference on Social Media in Public Life interest survey
by Steven Clift 10 Jun '09

10 Jun '09

Greetings, I'd love to get your input on whether you'd be interested in participating or presenting at an "e-conference" on Social Media in Public Life with an emphasis on community service. The quick survey is here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=QSYia1RDJnulTuMZBIr_2bYg_3d_3d We also ask about follow-up in-person community service "unconferences." Context: E-Democracy.Org, a volunteer-based community service and civic engagement organization, with local online "Issues Forums" across 15 local communities, is considering putting in a bid to become one of the Corporation for National and Community Service's national training providers. We've done webinars - http://e-democracy.org/webinars - helped with unconferences - http://e-democracy.org/unconf - and over the last 15 years I've spoken/lead seminars across 27 countries on using the Internet in civic engagement - http://stevenclift.com - ... so submitting (or joining a bid) to bring social media training online is a good fit. We also fairly uniquely deliver community service using volunteers via the Internet itself and most recently in the low income/high immigrant/diverse neighborhoods of the Twin Cities - http://blog.e-democracy.org/posts/172 We are more interested in "collabortition" than competition, so we've taken an open source approach with our drafting. Details and links to the call and an online group you can join to participate in our potential bid are all available from: http://pages.e-democracy.org/Social_media_in_community_service Please pass this on to those you think might be interested in attending or presenting (our bulk of our budget suggests 30 paid e-presenters paid for 10 days of work with a laundry list of duties and deliverables released under the creative commons). Sincerely, Steven Clift E-Democracy.Org clift(a)e-democracy.org http://twitter.com/democracySWu

G'day ! This is more about using actual images from Facebook and similar sites than about using screenshots, but: the Australian public broadcaster, the ABC, has useful editorial guidelines for using materials from social networking sites in its news reports. There are no easy answers here, but their guidelines at least point out the issues - and on that basis, I'd strongly suggest contacting the page creators rather than simply Facebook itself. An excerpt: Use in news reports of pictures from social networking sites Social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, MySpace) contain pictures that are accessible to mass media organisations. Persons in the pictures may become newsworthy, for example when involved in a natural disaster, accident or crime. Social networking online is evolving, and while in some ways these online spaces are public spaces, in other ways they are private to varying degrees. In many cases users can restrict access to family or friends. Or they may assume that their obscurity protects them, never contemplating that they might come to the attention of mass media. (http://www.abc.net.au/corp/pubs/edpols.htm) I'd be interested in hearing about similar explicit editorial policies in other news organisations, by the way. -- Dr Axel Bruns http://snurb.info/ Senior Lecturer, Media & Communication a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au Creative Industries Faculty, Z1-515, CIP Skype: LexaSnurb Queensland University of Technology +61 7 3138 5548 Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove, Qld. 4059, Australia CRICOS No.: 00213J

"Social Connectivity in America"
by Barry Wellman 10 Jun '09

Subtitle: Changes in Adult Friendship Network Size from 2002 to 2007 New paper by Hua (Helen) Wang and Barry Wellman. Forthcoming in American Behavioral Scientist (2009 or 2010). http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman/publications/social-connectivity/soci… or just go to my website http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman > Publications > Cyber Society > Other Cyber Society Research Papers Abstract: There is some panic in the United States about a possible decline in social connectivity. We use two American national surveys (from the Center for the Digital Future, World Internet Project) to analyze how changes in the number of friends are related to changes in Internet use. We find that friendships continue to be abundant among adult Americans between the ages of 25 to 74 and to have grown from 2002 to 2007. This trend is similar among Internet non-users, light users, moderate users, and heavy users and across communication contexts: offline, virtual only, and migrating from online to offline. Heavy users are particularly active, having the most friends both on- and off-line. Intracohort change consistently outweighs cohort replacement in overall growth in friendship. call for manuscripts > copyright> Computers and Composition special issue
by martine courant rife 10 Jun '09

10 Jun '09

A reminder . . . All- I've included below and provided a link to a call for manuscripts for a special issue of Computers and Composition (scheduled as volume 27 issue 3, September 2010) on Copyright, Culture, Creativity, and the Commons. https://www.msu.edu/~courantm/CFP_CC_copyright.pdf Please do feel free to send questions to or run ideas by any of the four of us guest editing the special issue. (Our contact info appears below and in the call.) Danielle Nicole DeVoss, Martine Courant Rife, Steve Westbrook, and John Logie *************************************************** CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS special issue of Computers and Composition, volume 27 issue 3, September 2010 Copyright, Culture, Creativity, and the Commons In 1998, Computers and Composition and Kairos both published special issues related to intellectual property. Much has changed in the 11 years since those special issues, including new legislation, proposed legislation, and the rise and fall of file-sharing spaces like Napster and Kazaa. Further, issues not addressed in the earlier special issue require the attention of computers and writing scholars, including global and international issues related to intellectual property, feminist and ecofeminist research in intellectual property, and issues of cultural cannibalism and intellectual commons. This special issue will attend to these—and other—issues, with a particular focus on the cultural consequences of our expanded sense of what counts as “property” in digital spaces. Questions we invite authors to consider and respond to include, but are not limited to: * Where are the significant intersections between intellectual property and computers and composition? What intersections have thus far remained invisible or buried? * What significant changes have occurred in U.S. copyright law in the past 15 years? In international copyright law, policies, and approaches? * What global, international, or cross-cultural intellectual property issues should we be attentive to? * How might our understandings of “the commons,” the concept of shared or “community-owned knowledge,” and the notion of “cultural appropriation” contribute to conversations on copyright and/or intellectual property? * What are some of the ways in which feminist/ecofeminist scholarship in intellectual property, and understandings of sustainability can inform or extend our approaches to intellectual property? * What are some of the ways in which cultural rhetorics scholarship in intellectual property can inform or extend our approaches to intellectual property? For example, is there a connection between racism and the commodification of culture via intellectual property regimes? A connection with sexism? Where are the intersections between discourses of race and/or gender and intellectual property-related discourse? * Are there better vocabularies, terms, and theories for us to drawn upon to situate and study “intellectual property?” Is it possible to recognize and/or attribute “intellectual property” in places other than formal legal regimes? * How have intellectual property issues become more immediate with regard to the continual growth of and use for digital writing spaces? New media texts? * In what ways can our long history of analyzing authorship and ownership of texts, including our discussions on issues of plagiarism and attribution, contribute to how we approach intellectual property issues? In what was does this long history perhaps submerge issues we might be discussing? * In what ways can writing instructors and researchers enter into public discussions about intellectual property? The special issue will consist of: 1) a special issue editors’ introduction, which will provide some historical, legal, and philosophical context; 2) approximately 6–7 articles addressing issues of intellectual property, focusing on those issues that have arisen since the 1998 special issues; and 3) a roundtable-style-discussion piece capturing the interactions of key figures in intellectual property scholarship within and beyond computers and writing (e.g., Jim Porter, Ty Herrington, Jessica Reyman, Jessica Litman, Kembrew McLeod, Siva Vaidhyanathan, Rebecca Moore Howard, Vandana Shiva, Johndan Johnson-Eilola, and Peter Yu). Deadline for manuscripts: September 15, 2009 (response by November 15) Deadline for final manuscripts: January 15, 2010 Please direct questions and email manuscripts to the special issue editors: Martine Courant Rife Lansing Community College martinerife(a)gmail.com Steve Westbrook California State University, Fullerton swestbrook(a)fullerton.edu Dànielle Nicole DeVoss Michigan State University devossda(a)msu.edu John Logie University of Minnesota logie(a)umn.edu -- Martine Courant Rife, JD, PhD Professor, Writing Program Lansing Community College Communication Department Arts & Sciences Building, 211G, 517/4839906 martinerife(a)gmail.com *** Editor, Intellectual Property Committee/Caucus NCTE Newsletter *** Attorney at Law, Michigan P#60947 7805 N. New book announcement: Figurations of Violence and Belonging: Queerness, Migranthood and Nationalism in Cyberspace and Beyond
by Adi Kuntsman 09 Jun '09

09 Jun '09

Dear all, I am pleased to announce my new book which came out this month best wishes Adi Figurations of Violence and Belonging: Queerness, Migranthood and Nationalism in Cyberspace and Beyond Adi Kuntsman Peter Lang, Oxford, Bern, Berlin, Bruxelles, Frankfurt am Main, New York, Wien. ISBN 978-3-03911-564-8 pb. http://www.peterlang.com/Index.cfm?vID=11564&vLang=E Violence is often seen as contradictory to belonging, as an obstacle to it, or as a background against which belonging – understood as the creation of ‘safe spaces’ – takes place. Instead, this book offers a more nuanced and critical analysis of the complex relationship between violence and belonging, by exploring the ways sexual, ethnic or national belonging can work through, rather than against, violence. Based on an ethnographic study of Russian-speaking, queer immigrants in Israel/Palestine, and also in cyberspace, this book is a fascinating, albeit at times disturbing, journey into the world of hate speech and fantasies of torture and sexual abuse; of tormented subjectivities and uncanny homes; of ghostly hauntings from the past and anxieties about the present and future. The author raises daring questions about the responsibilities of national homemaking, the complicity of queerness within violent regimes of colonialism and war, and the ambivalence of immigrant belonging at the intersection of marginality and privilege. Drawing from scholarship on migration, diaspora and critical race studies, feminist and queer theory, psychoanalysis and studies on cyberculture, the book skillfully traces the interplay between the different forms of violence – physical and verbal, social and psychic, material and semiotic – and offers novel insights into the analysis of nationalism, on-line sociality and queer migranthood. Mapping multiple displacements and fraught belongings in uncharted virtual worlds, Adi Kunstman bravely and creatively opens up new paths to understanding Israeli immigrant queer subjects by figuring with and through the affective dimensions of their political and cultural lives. Utterly convincing and provocative in her assertions regarding the haunted travels, violent histories and discordant discourses of these queers, Kuntsman offers us a work that will be an exemplar for future research in the field. – Martin F. Manalansan IV, author of Global Divas: Filipino Gay Men in the Diaspora Deftly traversing numerous overlapping locations of belonging – Russia, Israel, the UK, and cyberspace – Adi Kuntsman has produced a compelling multi-sited ethnography of forms of violence and their constitutive and connective capacities for and between queer subjects. Her eloquent interrogation of Israeli nationalism and anti-Palestinian sentiment in relation to queerness is a valuable contribution to the scholarship on sexuality and nationalism, not to mention, urgently needed in these times. This book is not only intellectually rich but also politically inspiring. – Jasbir K. Puar, authorof Terrorist Assemblages: Homonationalism in queer times Working through intersections of Russian and Israeli, Palestinian and Jew, queer and homophobe, home and exile, presents and pasts, recognition and erasure, Adi Kuntsman traces the ghostly but no less wounding acts of violence that are the conditions of belonging in contemporary Israel/Palestine. Inhabiting sites both online and off she shows us the realness of virtual spaces, and the virtualities that haunt the real. Theoretically sophisticated and ethnographically rich, this book eschews any easy reconciliations as Kuntsman insists that violence and belonging must be thought through one another. Not only will this book be of interest to a broad range of students and scholars, but it addresses as well urgent questions with respect to how we might live together in difference and more justly.– Lucy Suchman, Centre for Science Studies, Lancaster University, UK Table of contents Preface Prologue: The journey to this book Introduction: Violence and Belonging PART I HAUNTED FIGURES Chapter 1 The Shadow by the Latrine Chapter 2 The Jewish Victim PART II BORDER FIGURES Chapter 3 The Soldier and the Terrorist Chapter 4 Daughter of Palestine PART III FLAMING FIGURES Chapter 5 The Club Chapter 6 The Flamer Conclusion: Belonging Through Violence Bibliography Index -- Dr. Adi Kuntsman Leverhulme Early Career Fellow Research Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures The University of Manchester Second Floor, Arthur Lewis Building, room 2.007 Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK http://www.socialsciences.manchester.ac.uk/ricc/index.html http://adi.kuntsman.googlepages.com
