CALL FOR PAPERS: Electronic Journal of Communication (EJC) Communication Pedagogy in the Age of Social Media Over the last few years, social media technologies such as blogs, microblogs, digital videos, podcasts, wikis, and social networks have seen a dramatic increase in adoption rates. Because they connect people and facilitate the exchange of information and web content, social media technologies not only provide a powerful new way to interact with one another, they also present exciting new pedagogical opportunities. This special issue seeks to examine the pedagogical applications of social media technologies, especially with regard to the communication classroom. Examples of best practices in social media adoption in all areas of communication education are welcome, as are case studies or empirical research analyzing the effectiveness and/or effects of incorporating social media technologies into the communication classroom. Hi everybody, recently I got the following comment from a reviewer of a paper of mine: " *There is considerable use made of wikipedia and in an academic paper this is disappointing. *" I was thinking, what is the general practice in using wikipedia in academic paper writing? and are there limits/rules/good practices that you follow, both in writing and in review processes? If for example I am writing a paper on the peer review process in Open Source development, I often use wikipedia articles as references for technical terms, like "Diff", "CVS" or "Conditional Programming". Not being a Computer Scientist myself and thinking that the audience of my writings won't be composed of Computer Scientists as well, I feel that it is good to provide some basic references for complex, technical and often obscure terms. In this cases I prefer to use wikipedia articles, rather than Computer Programming or Operating Systems manuals, because I think that those articles are better and can be easily reached by anybody. On the contrary I never use wikipedia articles as references for sustaining an academic argument or as references for authors (e.g. I do not use the wikipedia article fo Harold Garfinkel, but I use the book Studies in Ethnomethodology; I never use the wikipedia article for referencing the "situated action" concept, but I use Lucy Suchman book). A guide on setting up a mailing list that I wrote for staff a decade or two ago says: If your mailing list is primarily for one or two way communication such as course announcements, then set the default 'reply to' to the individual poster. If your mailing list is for class discussion, then set the default 'reply to' to the mailing list. Use the list 'signature' to advise your students that replies go to the list and give your own email for private replies. There were/are good reasons for this advice. Up until now on air-l, replies to messages posted to the list went, by default, to air-l. The default reply setting for air-l has been changed. As of now, replies to list posts will go privately to the message poster and not to air-l. If you would like people on the list to see your reply, you will need to manually insert the air-l address into the To: field of your reply. A factual question would seem to be relevant: Will "reply-all" on most email clients go to the whole list? And to follow on others' questions as to the motivation, if it is about email volume, (1) there's still the digest option, (2) anybody done a study on what volumes of email or number of members prompt changes like this or proposals to split a list? I'm also going to argue in favour of leaving the setting as it was. I don't want my inbox cluttered with too many mails so this is why I digest and/or filter the various lists I'm on. I'd rather filter my own information and have access to the whole community's thoughts. Regards, Paula

Hello, all, I think the execs will want to reconsider their decision after seeking and reading the input from those here. I think it is the responsibility of the individual to go to email. The relatively few errors over the years don't justify taking away the social nature of the list, the default option to send to all. thanks, a
