Call for Papers

Call for Papers -- Exploring Childhood Studies, A Graduate Student Conference Department of Childhood Studies Rutgers University, Camden The graduate students of the Department of Childhood Studies at Rutgers University, Camden invite submissions for papers and poster presentations for their first formal graduate student conference on April 9, 2010. Graduate students from all disciplines who are engaged in research relating to children and childhood are encouraged to submit proposals. The field of childhood studies engages in both theoretical and empirical study of children and childhood within historical, contemporary, interdisciplinary, multi-cultural, state, national, and global contexts. Each combination of perspectives provides new insights into the lives of children and the families, cultures, and societies in which they are embedded. The interdisciplinary nature of the field is one of its greatest strengths and the core of its remarkable potential for scholarly advancement, but also leaves the field open for exploration and interrogation, and its borders difficult, if not impossible, to define. The Exploring Childhood Studies conference proposes defining Childhood Studies by "doing" childhood studies; the conference will explore the field by offering explorations within it. We seek papers from all disciplines that keep childhood as a construct, children as a category, or the child as a real living human as their central focus, providing critical thought and insight while locating them in different contexts, fields, and ideologies. In keeping with what we believe is the essential interdisciplinary nature of Childhood Studies, this conference seeks to be interdisciplinary itself. We seek proposals from all disciplines--education, literature, economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, law, political science, history, criminology, philosophy, medicine, religion, film studies, and cultural studies--as well as interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary scholarly work. The range of open topics within this field is as broad as the contexts of the experiences of children and childhood: war, health, rights, gender, poverty, wealth, policy, ethics, popular culture, globalization, school, family, home, sexuality, community, and representations in all modes of fiction. The field of Childhood Studies itself is open to interrogation. Selected papers will be grouped into panels that may be based around discipline, theme, or perspective, but will demonstrate the common grounding of the papers in their mutual exploration of children and childhood studies. Paper presentations should be limited to 20 minutes in length. Please send 250-word abstract for paper or poster presentation (specify which) and cover letter with name, current level of graduate study, affiliated university, and email address to m_modica(a)vfcc.edu. Include the words "conference abstract" in subject line, and include name on the cover letter only. For further information about The Exploring Childhood Studies conference, contact: Patrick Cox at ptcox(a)camden.rutgers.edu or Anandini Dar at anandini(a)camden.rutgers.edu or visit http://crab.rutgers.edu/~bowman/conference/ Deadline for submission is October 31, 2009. Accepted presenters will receive email notification by January 10, 2010. Home to the Department of Childhood Studies and The Center for Children and Childhood Studies, Rutgers-Camden is a leader in the national and international discourse on the state of children and childhood. We are very proud of the fact that Rutgers-Camden is the first and only PhD-granting Department of Childhood Studies in the nation, which has now entered its third year. We look forward to introducing the larger academic community to our fellow students, exemplary faculty and unique program, and to engaging in vigorous and stimulating discussions with our peers throughout academia. Tracking Iranian protests / blogs
by Bernie Hogan 14 Jun '09

14 Jun '09

Hi everyone, I'm sure someone would be posting on this - so why not get the ball rolling: The election seems to have been stolen, protests are massive, disinformation abounds, and the country plans a massive strike on Tuesday. Iran is one of the most well connected countries in the blogosphere, as far as I know and CNN got twitter-bombed by Iranians, and there was a mysterious communications blackout on the day of the election. I highly suspect that the present Iranian government is doing everything in their power to limit the communication power of the dissident citizens. But I also suspect that it won't be enough - that merely having the network which binds people together taken away from them will incite further protests and civil disobedience. So - what to make of it all? Thoughts from anyone? (John Kelly - can you back me up on the Iranian blogosphere, or am I just reciting a myth?) Take care, BERNiE

conference announcement - GDC09, Aarhus, Denmark
by Charles Ess 14 Jun '09

14 Jun '09

While this CFP does not directly address the internet and related topics, it seems to me that surely AoIR-ists will have some significant contributions to add? Hope to see you in Aarhus! - c. == Call for Papers--Submission Deadline: July 15 Abstracts Global Dialogue Conference Series GDC09: RESPONSIBILITY --- CLIMATE CHANGE AS CHALLENGE FOR INTERCULTURAL INQUIRY ON VALUES November 3-6, Aarhus, Denmark An international, interdisciplinary research conference: <http://www.globaldialogueconference.org/> www.globaldialogueconference.org <http://www.globaldialogueconference.org/> GDC09 is an integrated four-track meeting for researchers, journalists, educators, and business representatives. Climate change requires globally concerted initiatives that cannot be motivated by direct practical self-interest and economic incentives alone. The aim of this conference is to compare conceptions of ecological responsibility across cultures (and religions), and to explore the role of intercultural value studies for the development, communication, and practical implementation of new models of future-oriented and collective responsibility. GDC09 is the first of a series of five biannual international interdisciplinary conferences presenting and promoting intercultural dialogue on values, as a means of proactive conflict mitigation and social innovation. The conference will conclude with the bestowal of the Global Dialogue Prize (www.globaldialogueprize.org <http://www.globaldialogueprize.org/> ). We invite submissions of research contributions from the areas of philosophy, political science, psychology, anthropology, theology/ religious studies, sociology, conflict research, education, journalism and media science, management, organization, and finance theory. Please submit abstracts (500 words) by July 15. Please see conference webpage for timeline and guidelines of submisssion and publication venues. Possible topics to be addressed in the JOURNALISM TRACK: When and under what circumstances does climate change become a news item? What type of actors and themes can attract the attention of journalists and get climate change onto the news agenda? How does environmental journalism operate and how does it affect changes in individual behavior and public policy? Is it possible to build a global public and what role can and should local media play in this effort? At a time where scientists disagree amongst themselves and very few journalists have a thorough scientific understanding of the issues, how can we be sure that the information in the media is both accurate and adequate? What is the appropriate role of journalists when reporting on industries offering market-based solutions to climate problems? Can peace journalism help to prevent ³climate conflicts², i.e., social conflicts due to climate change? Do journalists carry increasing responsibility for intercultural communication and if so, how will it affect the goals of journalism?

Social and Mobile Technology to Support Civic Engagement, 13/14 July, QUT Brisbane
by Marcus Foth 12 Jun '09

12 Jun '09

Final Call for Papers From Social Butterfly to Urban Citizen - A HCSNet Workshop on Social and Mobile Technology to Support Civic Engagement Queensland University of Technology, Kelvin Grove Campus, Brisbane June 19, 2009 Workshop position papers (300-500 words) due June 26, 2009 Author notifications sent July 13/14, 2009 Workshop http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/node/2943 Keynote Speaker Co-sponsored by HCSNet, QUT iCi and NICTA Queensland, we are pleased to announce Adam Greenfield, author of 'Everyware' and Head of Design Direction for User Interface and Services at Nokia in Helsinki, as the keynote speaker for this workshop. His talk "The city is here for you to use" will give us a preview of the ideas in his forthcoming new book. The keynote is open to the public, but seats are limited. If you would like to attend the keynote only, please RSVP to Julie-Anne Edwards by Tue 30 June 2009 at julieanne.edwards(a)qut.edu.au. Workshop participants will be admitted to the keynote automatically. Workshop Theme This workshop brings together people from a diverse range of disciplines to discuss social and mobile technologies and how they can be studied, designed and developed further to support local participation and civic engagement in urban environments. Web applications such as blogs, wikis, video and photo sharing sites, and social networking systems have been termed ‘Web 2.0’ to highlight an arguably more open, collaborative, personalisable, and therefore more participatory internet experience than what had previously been possible. Giving rise to a culture of participation, an increasing number of these social applications are now available on mobile phones where they take advantage of device-specific features such as sensors, location and context awareness. This workshop will make a contribution towards exploring and better understanding the opportunities and challenges provided by tools, interfaces, methods and practices of social and mobile technology that enable participation and engagement. It will bring together a group of academics and practitioners from a diverse range of disciplines such as computing and engineering, social sciences, digital media and human-computer interaction to critically examine a range of applications of social and mobile technology, such as social networking, mobile interaction, wikis (eg., futuremelbourne.com.au), twitter, blogging, virtual worlds (eg, hub2.org) and their impact to foster community activism, civic engagement and cultural citizenship. This workshop will be held back-to-back with an ARC Cultural Research Network (CRN) workshop on 11/12 July 2009 at QUT titled, “Unboxing the iPhone: The Circuits of Digital Culture,” organised by Larissa Hjorth, Jean Burgess and Ingrid Richardson, supported by the CRN’s Cultural Technologies Node. This will provide opportunities to exchange ideas and experiences. http://www.uq.edu.au/crn/activities/glamm-iphone.html The workshop is also very timely in that it coincides with the six week residency of Prof. Carlo Ratti, Director of the SENSEable City Lab at MIT, and the 2009 inaugural Queensland Innovator in Residence: http://yearofcreativity.deta.qld.gov.au/innovator.html Audience We hope to attract a multidisciplinary range of HCSnet members and colleagues working in areas such as user experience design, human- computer interaction, digital media, social sciences and computing and engineering. The topic and themes to be explored are timely, relevant and significant to the research work of many academics in Australia and overseas who are looking at ways to help engender a culture of local and national participation and engagement. Many colleagues find that the underlying systems architecture and principles that have given rise to participatory culture in many social and lifestyle domains should be examined with a view to reappropriate them to foster civic engagement and a revival of citizenship. Event Format The workshop will be held over two days, on Mon 13 and Tue 14 July 2009, at the Creative Industries Precinct of Queensland University of Technology, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane. Participants will be given the opportunity to present their work with a view to stimulate an informed debate. The workshop will allow plenty of time for both breakout and plenary discussions. Submissions We are calling for 300-500 word position statements expressing the interest in the workshop or abstracts of proposed presentations from prospective participants. Queries can be sent via email to Marcus Foth at m.foth [AT] qut.edu.au. Please submit your abstract online by Fri 19 June 2009 at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/node/add/submission/2943 You must log in to submit an abstract. If you are not a HCSNet user yet, please create an account at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/user/register This workshop is free for anyone who has been a HCSNet member for 2 months prior to the workshop. Non-members need to pay $100 registration fee for this workshop via the online facility. Please register online by Fri 3 July 2009 at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/events/register/2943 Travel Bursaries HCSNet will fund a number of travel bursaries of $300 each to help cover the costs of travel and accommodation for participants from outside the Brisbane and South East Queensland area. HCSNet has also approved a Student Support Grant to enable students to participate. The provision of a submission as described above is a prerequisite for funding. If not all participants can be covered, funding grants will be allocated based on the relevance of your abstract to the workshop theme; also, students and early career researchers will have priority.
