Question regarding language, the Internet, and university students
by Jasmine Pues 26 May '09

26 May '09

Hello all, I am in the midst of writing a MA thesis regarding "Netspeak" but I was curious as to what's out there in terms of how university students are involved. For example, I know that Naomi Baron used her students in investigating; but I was wondering if there were anything about how "Netspeak" is regarded as a youth thing (if there is, in fact, anything out there - which I'm not certain about). I'm already using Crystal (Language and the Internet) and Baron (Always On). Any help / advice would be highly appreciated! Thank you, Jasmine Pues

Dear Jasmine - > Also, as a general question: when is it acceptable to refer > to yourself as a > 'scholar' or 'researcher'? (Semantics I know, but I'm > studying language so > the distinction is sort of important to me.) This distinction was actually the topic (!) of my PhD on internet scholarship. I explored four 'pathways' to internet scholarship - specifically talking about how internet scholars develop and integrate any previous academic study with their current engagement with the internet. To me, briefly, a scholar engages with the topic with supporting theoretical structure and analysis that comes from "far and wide" - and when becoming a scholar, academics undergo a process of educational/personal and professional development (the Germans called it Bildung). Rall, D. N. (2007) "Locating four pathways to internet scholarship" Lismore, NSW, Southern Cross University. Unpublished PhD thesis. The definition of an internet researcher I didn't actually explore. But I'm sure there's many others on this list that could offer good definitions. Cheers, Denise Denise N. Rall, PhD. Thanks Marj. Interesting take on the stubject from your Uni. The way I put it was quite the other way around, that one could easily be an internet researcher without undertaking scholastic duties. Further, scholasticism involves three prongs: teaching, research and service to the Academy. See Clark (1980; 1987, and further Clark, B. R. (1995). Places of inquiry: Research and advanced education in modern universities. Berkeley, University of California Press. Tony Becher would also disagree with your Uni's definition of scholar as not doing research: Becher, T. and P. R. Trowler (2001). Academic tribes and territories: Intellectual enquiry and the cultures of disciplines. Buckingham, UK, SRHE and Open University Press. But I did have in the thesis a definition for internet studies that actually combines scholarship and research into one package: Here is my definition for internet studies: Internet studies and research, as it develops within programs of study or research projects at universities, research centers or institutes, is elaborated by scholars who work across disciplines and take the internet, its use and users as their locus/focus of study and research (Rall, 2003/2004). Ok, enough about scholasticism which is at the best of times a dry and boring subject! Cheers, Denise Denise N. Rall, PhD. by Jose Abdelnour-Nocera 25 May '09

25 May '09

The Centre for Internationalisation and Usability at Thames Valley University (TVU) is pleased to announce The Vice-Chancellor's full-time research Studentships. TVU is among just three London universities to climb 17 places or more in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. To celebrate TVU's performance in the RAE2008 and strengthen our research student base, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter John is pleased to announce up to fifteen full-time research scholarships throughout the university. A proportion of these will be in the field of usability and internationalisation. Rooted in the discipline of human-computer interaction (HCI) the Centre for Internationalisation and Usability supports software developers in building systems that meet all the needs of end users. There are two challenges underpinning our work. Computer science and interdisciplinary challenges that need to be solved to provide tools, techniques and methods that can be used by software developers internationally to build usable systems. Two separate strands have been identified in HCI for global commercial software development and HCI for international economic and social development. http://www.tvu.ac.uk/computing/research/comp_ciu.jsp Possible topic areas for the studentships include: - Cross-cultural HCI - Internationalisation of products and systems - Interaction Design for Social/International Development - Sociotechnical Interaction-Design - Usability and healthcare - Empirical Studies of Software Development - Agile Methods and User Centred Design Informal enquiries about our research can be directed to Dr. José Abdelnour Nocera, jose.abdelnour-nocera(a)tvu.ac.uk Applications are invited from suitably qualified students to commence study in September 2009. You should hold or expect to be awarded a 2 (i) Hons degree or above. A Master's degree in an appropriate subject area is desirable. Those candidates whose first language is not English must demonstrate evidence of appropriate English language proficiency, normally defined as a minimum IELTS score of 7. In addition to their PhD studies, duties will include up to 6 hours per week (during term time) assisting with teaching on appropriate modules. Informal academic enquiries may be directed to Professor Sibel Roller, Head of Graduate School, sibel.roller(a)tvu.ac.uk. To apply, send your full Curriculum Vitae and a covering letter indicating your area of interest and including a supporting statement of no more than 500 words describing your reasons for wishing to undertake a research degree to Maria Pennells, Graduate School, Thames Valley University, St Mary's Road, London W5 5RF (researchdegrees(a)tvu.ac.uk) If applicable, evidence of English language proficiency should also be included. Closing date for receipt of applications: Friday 12 June 2009. If short-listed for one of these awards, you should be prepared to attend an interview at TVU in London in June/July 2009.

Social Science Internet Studies @ ANU
by Robert Ackland 25 May '09

25 May '09

Social Science Internet Studies @ The Australian National University The World Wide Web is only around 20 years old, but it has transformed the way we work, collaborate, engage in commerce, participate in politics and interact socially. The Australian National University's Master of Social Research (Social Science of the Internet) was launched in 2008 and focuses on: · the fundamental changes to society, politics and the economy brought about by the web · social science concepts and methods for understanding life in the Internet Age · online research methods for collecting and analysing Internet data. The emphasis on social science (economics, political science and sociology) and quantitative research methods is what distinguishes the Master of Social Research (Social Science of the Internet); Internet studies elsewhere typically have a media or cultural studies perspective, or else focus on the governance of the Internet. The Master of Social Research (Social Science of the Internet) can be completed in one year of full-time study (part-time studies and non-award enrolment in individual courses are also possible). Two of the compulsory courses (Social Science of the Internet, Online Research Methods) are available as online courses. Enrolments for Semester 2 2009 close on 30th June. For more information contact Dr Robert Ackland, Fellow and Masters Coordinator E: Robert.Ackland(a)anu.edu.au T: 02 6125 0312 CRICOS # 001200C http://adsri.anu.edu.au/study/ssi.php ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Five postdoctoral fellowships available at Umeå University
by Patrik Svensson 25 May '09

25 May '09

Five international postdoctoral positions in the digital humanities are now available at HUMlab, Umeå University, Sweden from September 1, 2009 or January 15, 2010. The call is open, but 1-3 positions may be allocated to the areas of "religion and the digital", "digital journalism", "architecture and the digital", "next generation digital humanities tools" and/or "visualization in the digital humanities". HUMlab is an internationally recognized center for the humanities and information technology. Much of the work takes place in a 5,300 square feet studio space at the center of the university and in different kinds of digital and hybrid environments. A new part of the lab was inaugurated on May 14, 2009. This video shows the new space the day before the event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2oUm3p-yJk. For archived seminars (which use the other part of the lab) please see http://stream.humlab.umu.se/. By the end of 2011, a new HUMlab-X on the Creative Campus (a 10-minute walk from the main campus) will be in place. HUMlab is based on a double (or triple) affiliation model where much of the work is done in close collaboration with the humanities (or other) departments. HUMlab offers an open, friendly, creative and intellectually rich milieu for doing work in the humanities and information technology. The fellowships are for one year. Another year may be possible based on a review as well as the availability of funding. Collaboration is a central part of the ethos of HUMlab and among our strategic partners are Kulturverket (local award-winning culture organization), Lund University (the Humanities Laboratory), King's College London (Centre for Computing in the Humanities) and the University of California (UC Humanities Research Institute). Applicants will be expected to have a Ph.D. in a humanities discipline. In exceptional cases, other areas and backgrounds can be of interest as well. Applications should include a description of an envisioned postdoctoral year-long project. Please see http://blog.humlab.umu.se/postdocs for more information. Applications should be submitted electronically by June 18, 2009. We look forward to receiving your application. Patrik Svensson Director, HUMlab Umeå University
