Textbook Suggestion Needed
by Ted Coopman 18 May '09

18 May '09

All, I am teaching an upper division Internet Communication (theory) course online in the fall and am interested in suggestions for a basic textbook/reader. In the past I have used Thurlow, C., Lengel, L., & Tomic, A. (2004). Computer-mediated communication: Social interaction and the internet. London: Sage. My students did not like it very much (typical), but the main issue now is that it is dated. This is same issue with Castells' Internet Galaxy. I have considered going with journal articles, but I generally like to have a foundation text as well that lays out the basics; history, culture, CMC, basic theory, etc. I teach at a California State University campus with a slighty older student population who may not have the best skills but do have plenty of life experience. Straight forward language and pragmatics are a plus. Ideally any text would be broad and include both social scientific and cultural perspectives. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -TED -- Ted M. Coopman Ph.D. Lecturer Department of Communication Studies Department of Television, Radio, Film, & Theatre San Jose State University

CFP: Disintermediation Processes and New Media
by Cristian Vaccari 18 May '09

18 May '09

Italian Political Science Association (SISP) Annual meeting, Luiss University, Rome, 17-19 September 2009 Panel on Disintermediation Processes and New Media Section of Political Communication Convenors: Lorenzo Mosca and Cristian Vaccari Discussant: Sara Bentivegna By promoting processes of disintermediation, the new media stimulate the production of autonomous information flows, which bypass gate-keeping practices by both political actors and traditional mass media. While journalists maintain an important filtering function between society and the mediated public sphere, they have to face a double challenge. On the one hand, they are by-passed by the proliferation of alternative media, especially online (web radios, portals, blogs, forum, street televisions, and so forth). On the other hand, they have to deal with the possibility for political and social actors to autonomously represent themselves via the new media, not least through social networking tools (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.). In turn, these new communication arenas enable actors that are outsiders in the institutional political sphere to autonomously organize themselves and, in some cases, to incisively participate to public life. How does, then, the functioning of the public sphere and political communication change as a result? How does the relationship between communication producers and receivers change when disintermediation processes occur? Under which conditions can effective participatory spaces be opened up for actors excluded from the institutional sphere? Which strategies do political actors devise to take advantage of these opportunities, and to what extent are they motivated to doing so? During the last decade, the scientific literature on these issues has produced comparative analyses on the online presence of political parties, unions, representative institutions, civil society actors and groups, or of some combinations of these different actors. Most of these studies have utilized standardized codebooks for website analysis. Other studies, however, have developed insightful qualitative analysis, while at the same time being limited by their focus on single case-studies. While this line of research has mostly focused on the organizational (meso) level, research on the individual (micro) level has only episodically relied on fully representative surveys capable of solid generalizations. The surveys conducted so far have often been based either on samples representative of the whole population – where, as a consequence, a limited amount of items focused on internet usage – and surveys on self-selected samples of internet users, which in some cases featured articulated sets of indicators on information consumption and production online, but offered little in terms of generalizability. Moreover, to date the literature does not feature any longitudinal study of internet users. This panel aims at collecting contributions focusing on processes of disintermediation enabled by new media, focusing on both individuals and organizations. We particularly welcome proposals that integrate quantitative and qualitative methods and that shed light on the role of contextual factors in these participatory practices, thus illuminating the nexus between online and offline environments. *SUBMISSION PROCEDURE* Please send a title and an abstract of up to 250 words to lmosca(a)uniroma3.itor cristian.vaccari(a)unibo.it by June 15, 2009. Proposals and papers can be submitted either in English or Italian. A decision about which contributions to include will be made by June, 20 2009. See http://www.sisp.it/convegnofor rurther details on the meeting.

I'd like to suggest a book by the professor I work with: INTERNET (Routledge Introductions to Media and Communications) by Lorenzo Cantoni and Stefano Tardini, 2006. Table of Contents 1. The Political Economy of the Internet 2. Computer Mediated Communication: Features and Technologies 3. Hypertext 4. Websites as Communication 5. Conceptualising Users of the Internet: Traces and Search Engines 6. Internet: Communities and Practices >From Routledge page ( http://www.routledgemedia.com/books/Internet-isbn9780415352277 ): >From music to gaming, information gathering to eLearning; eCommerce to eGovernment, Lorenzo Cantoni and Stefano Tardini's absorbing introduction considers the internet as a communication technology; the opportunities it affords us, the limitations it imposes and the functions it allows. Internet explores: * the political economy of the internet * hypertext * computer mediated communication * websites as communication * conceptualizing users of the internet * internet communities and practices. Perfect for students studying this modern phenomenon, and a veritable e-feast for all cyber junkies. New MA programme in Digital Anthropology at University College London
by Lane DeNicola 17 May '09

17 May '09

Application deadline: 30 June 2009 http://www.ucl.ac.uk/anthropology/digital-anthropology/ Digital technologies have become ubiquitous. From Facebook, YouTube and Flickr to PowerPoint, Google Earth and Second Life. Museum displays migrate to the internet, family communication in the Diaspora is dominated by new media, artists work with digital films and images. Anthropology and ethnographic research is fundamental to understanding the local consequences of these innovations, and to create theories that help us acknowledge, understand and engage with them. Today's students need to become proficient with digital technologies as research and communication tools. Through combining technical skills with appreciation of social effects, students will be trained for further research and involvement in this emergent world. This MA brings together three key components in the study of digital culture: 1. Skills training in digital technologies, including our own Digital Lab, from internet and digital film editing to e-curation and digital ethnography. 2. Anthropological theories of virtualism, materiality/immateriality and digitisation. 3. Understanding the consequences of digital culture through the ethnographic study of its social and regional impact. Bursaries There is a £5,000 annual bursary specifically for this and the MA in Material and Visual Culture, as well as 3 x £1,000 bursaries for all anthropology MA programmes. All those who have submitted an application by 30 June 2009 will automatically be considered and no additional application form is necessary. The Dept. of Anthropology at UCL is the world's leading centre for the study of Material and Visual Culture. We publish The Journal of Material Culture and several relevant book series. We have nine specialist staff in material and visual culture. We currently supervise nearly fifty PhD students specifically in this field, including many with topics in Digital Anthropology. The programme is suitable both for those with a prior degree in anthropology but also for those with degrees in neighbouring disciplines who wish to be trained in anthropological and related approaches to digital culture. There is scope for those with specialist interests to work closely with designers, curators, communication specialists as well as our own digital studio. In addition to its importance for careers such as media, design and museums, digital technology is also integral to development, theoretical and applied anthropology. For further information about this course contact d.miller(a)ucl.ac.uk For making an application, note that the UCL bureaucracy may take a while to catch up with what is a new course, so in order to ensure your application is received we recommend that you download the application form from: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate-study/application-admiss… And send this directly to: Prof. Daniel Miller Department of Anthropology University College London 14 Taviton Street London WC1H OBW University College London has over 3,500 research staff and 17,000 students, ranking among the top three multi-faculty research and teaching universities in the UK. Re: [Air-L] Social network site nomenclature
by 'Gail Taylor 17 May '09

17 May '09

Danah's definitions for "online social network" and "online social networking" both suggest that online technologies are foundation to enabling and supporting network structures and networking practices and processes. What are online technologies? Based on the context of this particular conversation (who the participants are, what we know about the topics, personal digital fluency levels, etc.), it is possible to infer that the Internet is the platform that supports and also enables social interactions and also that Internet-based products and services, such as Facebook, are also part of the mix. Can we assume that this same meaning of online technologies will transfer to other settings where there are more diverse points of view as well as levels of digital literacy among members of conversations? My thinking is that the definitions should be more explicit to address transference issues. I'm also wondering whether the designations "social network sites" and "social networking sites" are redundant due to technological developments allowing users of social network services, such as Facebook, to build capabilities into the software program that allows users to map (visualize) their personal networks and those of other subscribers. Is it time to consider collapsing these two designations into one to account for this technological shift? I personally think the time is 'ripe' based on the pace of technological developments and also research that is being conducted to promote a stages of development perspective of the Internet (e.g. Web 1.0 --> Web 2.0 --> Web 3.0 --> . . . . ). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gail Taylor, Ph.D. (ABD) Human Resource Education University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Graduate School of Library and Information Science Graduate Instructor and Teaching Assistant (LIS 201 IT and Organizations, LIS 202 Social Aspects of IT) >Message: 6 >Date: Thu, 14 May 2009 22:51:16 -0400 >From: danah boyd <aoir.z3z(a)danah.org> >Subject: Re: [Air-L] Social network site nomenclature >To: Nicole Ellison <nellison(a)msu.edu> >Cc: Linda.Olsen(a)infomedia.uib.no, air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org >Message-ID: <7D0F58D5-81E3-447E-B00D-C5B81F714A50(a)danah.org> >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes > >Here's an uber short definition for how I think about these terms >(concurring with many of the previous respondents): > >- Social network: ties between people, regardless of mediating >infrastructure [think what sociologists study] > >- Online social network: ties between people that exist within or are >created because of online technologies > >- Social networking: the practice of building one's social network, >regardless of mediating infrastructure [think what business >professionals are interested in] > >- Online social networking: the practicing of building one's social >network using online technologies > >- Social network site: websites that support the articulation, >display, and utilization of social networks [see "Social Network >Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship for a proper definition] > >- Social networking site: websites that center on the practice of >social networking, whether for business or pleasure [many communities >of interest, business networking, and online dating sites fit into >this category] > > >In our JCMC special issue, Nicole and I explicitly wanted to pull out >the category of new sites exemplified by Facebook, MySpace, etc. While >they are a subset of online communities, they are both structurally >different than many of them and engender very different practices.
