Colleagues/ After my return from Ireland, where I will deliver four (4) keynote presentations titled _The Paradigms They Are A-Changin' > The Future Of Research And Scholarship: Open / Semantic / Social / Mobile_ [ http://scholarship20.blogspot.com/2009/05/paradigms-they-are-changin-ope n.html ], I will travel to Macon, Georgia to give the keynote at _InSite 2009: Information Science + IT Education Joint Conference_ On June 12 2009 ************************************* TITLE > InSITE-Connect: A Model for Dynamic Interdisciplinary Interaction ABSTRACT > As prominently stated on its homepage, the Informing Science Institute is "an organization of colleagues helping colleagues ... [that] draw[s] together people ... who teach, research, and use information technologies to inform clients ... [and who] share their knowledge with others," regardless of [their respective] disciplines." While its meetings and publications provide opportunities to communicate, current and emerging online technologies have the potential of facilitating greater collaboration between and among scholars and their publics, regardless of location, time, or academic focus. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of select online professional and social networks, and describe the features and functionalities that can foster more dynamic interaction within the diverse InSITE communities. The presentation will conclude with a demonstration of a proposed online professional network. ************************************** I Am Greatly Interested In Learning Of Exemplar Professional / Organizational / Society Social Networks Sites To Profile In This Presentation. IMHO One Of The Best Exemplar Professional Online Social Networks Is The Recently Established Ning-Based _Conversants Conference/Conversation_ That Is Devoted To Participatory Librarianship. Please submit your recommendation as a Comment on the blog entry at [ http://tinyurl.com/qpfsk6 ] BTW: Links To The InSite 2009 conference program / etc. are available from the blog entry. Multi-modal communications comparisons?
by c-soc-aoir＠dagnon.net 20 May '09

20 May '09

Hello all, This is my first foray into publicly attempting to ask this question, so please bear with my wandering hither and yon. I would like to provide new and/or differing communication mechanisms through the Internet, though I realize that I should really know how and why and by whom current mechanisms are being utilized in order to have a chance at coming up with more useful tools. However simply comparing and contrasting existing modalities seems like a herculean effort. Do such comparisons exist? The few things Google has lead me to are pretty limited in scope either in modalities covered, aspects being compared, or the details of comparing them. I would like comparisons including but not limited to CMC. Preferably it would compare communication mediums or processes including face-to-face, postal mail, phone, cell, texting, web cams, MUDs/MOOs/MMOGs, bulletin boards (physical and digital), ad-hoc meetings, conferences, and possibly anything else from hieroglyphs, papyrus scrolls, and sign language to websites, wikis, blogs, forums, and tweets. In particular I would love to see comparisons (whether backed up by statistics, surveys, or at least well-reasoned and explained arguments) of many aspects though at the moment users' expectations about the other users' usage patterns seems key as, aside from the technology's interface and reliability the other person/people seem like the largest hurdle to a good user experience. For example: I am emailing this to the listserv, hoping for some well reasoned questions, constructive criticisms on the topic/question/examples, and suggested (freely available) readings to help me on my way as I'm making this request in honest earnestness, yet this message carries only some if any of that to you. I've considered facilitating explicit definitions of the expected content and timing responses included with a communication, though lack of a mechanism or awareness to define them may not be the reason they're left implicit within the communication streams. Also simply the differences in usage patterns varies drastically: some people almost never use a phone of any kind, others flow freely between calling, texting, photos, video, and emailing from their cells. However people can carry heavy- or no-expectations of getting a response instantaneously. And the toll of having/not having all those (implicit) expectations met (dependency, anger, ?). Other interesting aspects may include: any measurements or classifications comparing informativeness, expressiveness, understandability, immediacy, reliability, accuracy, interactiveness, ease-of-use, ease-of-adoption, circles of popularity, moderation (self, peer, superior, IT, corporate, law/gov't, morality), fail over, redundancy, etc. Still the differences between sender and receiver (and if/how those are negotiated or negotiable), side effects of the modality or other influences including business or cultural (eg. cell phones are much more popular in Israel because they're cheaper than in the U.S.) including new cultural effects or sub-cultures, and how much the communication itself is shaped by the medium or process seem like significant realms needing at least summarization if not exploration. Are the best (communication) technologies the ones you don't realize are there? Or the ones that call for your attention every minute? Bonus points for including different historical versions of the same modality within the comparison (eg. initial telephones required human-operators to connect calls, vs voice-operated cellphones). Lastly may be cause-and-effect of imposed limitations after the initial technological pushes: many large companies now forbid any social networking at work and any critical messages ever, DMCA/other take down notices for BitTorrent sites, YouTube videos, and company-criticizing websites, the DMCA itself, electronic spam, many networking ports have been shut down by organizations because they're additional attack vectors for security breeches - resulting in most programs working over port 80, DTV signals are more fragile than analog signals so they cause more outages vs degradation, and President Obama needing permission (and security hardening) to have a Blackberry... Is that too much to ask? 8) Highly curious, hoping I don't have to do all this work myself, and willing to carry on this conversation in other modalities. MAKING LINKS 2009 Sustaining Communities in Tough Times 17 - 18 November 2009 University of Melbourne http://www.makinglinks.org.au/ Call for papers Two major challenges face the world today: the global economic crisis and environmental sustainability. Both are already having an impact on peoples’ lives and livelihoods. Community organisations have already expressed concern that the most vulnerable in our societies will be hardest hit. Community organisations also face the challenge of keeping their operations going in tough financial times, and at the same time trying to be part of the environmental solution, rather than part of the problem. Making Links Conference 2009 asks: how are non-profit organisations meeting these twin challenges? We are seeking presentations that address issues such as: • Technology as a tool to improve communication, increase productivity and retain staff • Disaster response / management / relief • Financing your organisation and its programs in tight economic times • Engaging with communities online • Green ICT projects (from recycling computers to green design to green office to campaigning and more) • Corporate social responsibility - building partnerships to support our communities • Strengthening marginalised communities and constituencies • Research supporting action • The rapidly changing interface of online communication • Community arts and media Making Links is a peer-based conference. We invite you to present a paper on your learning and experiences with ICT, your projects, case studies or research, or lead a practical workshop that introduces useful tools and concepts. The structure of the conference will be based on: • Case studies • Practical workshops • Panel discussions • Networking opportunities • Film festival • Social and satellite events Submit a proposal online at: http://www.makinglinks.org.au/papers.shtml Who should attend? The conference attracts delegates and presenters from many fields including health, environment, education, charities, business, government, philanthropy, human services and non-profits working with marginalised groups (e.g. e.g. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse, youth at risk, unemployed, rural and remote, disability). Registrations open 10 June. Realize the story needs some add-ons. a. I find that my newbie Master's students, unless extremely well trained as undergrads, also are making the transition between the "right answer" and thinking critically. b. One reason why internet stuff is becoming routinized is that it is now the great majority of the North American young adult population. So no "gee whiz" (altho possibilities always changing) and less early adopter extra-special smartness. The institutional of the Internet -- and of Internet studies. Just my .02. YMMV. 1. The discussion re textbooks hits home an important difference between grad students -- let's look critically at multiple points of view and different pieces of evidence -- and undergrads -- tell us what the right answer is. 2. Having said that, I find that my third-year students ("juniors" and "seniors' to the 'Mericans) are happy with a set of article readings (online), as long as (a) there ain't too many (3/week seems ok) and (b) my ppt lectures serve as the integrating "textbook". 3. Looking back to 1962, I had a similar experience when I entered my senior year at Lafayette, a good undergrad US college. It was only in the honors history seminar that I received pre-grad school training about not looking for "the right answer" but evaluating different points of view and evidence. So everything old may be new again. 4. I AM intrigued by the list members who say students are less excited and knowledgeable about the Internet. OT1H, my course enrollment was up this year (but that may be because folks had a schedule opening). OTOH, students were generally less excited and less knowledgeable. I hadn't thought about it before, but my hunch is that the list members were right in saying the Internet has become blase -- reminds me of when I couldn't talk about the telephone as being important in the 1970s-1980s when it hugely was. (And perhaps still is.) 5. Anyway, I know of 3 nice books in our area that are coming along: a. Paul Levinson b. Nancy Baym (she's been tweeting about it) c. Lee Rainie & me. Ad astra! Adam Greenfield at HCSNet Workshop, 13/14 July, QUT Brisbane
by Marcus Foth 18 May '09

18 May '09

Second Call for Papers From Social Butterfly to Urban Citizen - A HCSNet Workshop on Social and Mobile Technology to Support Civic Engagement Queensland University of Technology, Kelvin Grove Campus, Brisbane June 19, 2009 Workshop position papers (300-500 words) due June 26, 2009 Author notifications sent July 13/14, 2009 Workshop http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/node/2943 Keynote Speaker We are pleased to announce Adam Greenfield, author of 'Everyware' and Head of Design Direction for User Interface and Services at Nokia in Helsinki, as the keynote speaker for this workshop. His talk "The city is here for you to use" will give us a preview of the ideas in his forthcoming new book. Workshop Theme This workshop brings together people from a diverse range of disciplines to discuss social and mobile technologies and how they can be studied, designed and developed further to support local participation and civic engagement in urban environments. Web applications such as blogs, wikis, video and photo sharing sites, and social networking systems have been termed ‘Web 2.0’ to highlight an arguably more open, collaborative, personalisable, and therefore more participatory internet experience than what had previously been possible. Giving rise to a culture of participation, an increasing number of these social applications are now available on mobile phones where they take advantage of device-specific features such as sensors, location and context awareness. This workshop will make a contribution towards exploring and better understanding the opportunities and challenges provided by tools, interfaces, methods and practices of social and mobile technology that enable participation and engagement. It will bring together a group of academics and practitioners from a diverse range of disciplines such as computing and engineering, social sciences, digital media and human-computer interaction to critically examine a range of applications of social and mobile technology, such as social networking, mobile interaction, wikis (eg., futuremelbourne.com.au), twitter, blogging, virtual worlds (eg, hub2.org) and their impact to foster community activism, civic engagement and cultural citizenship. This workshop will be held back-to-back with an ARC Cultural Research Network (CRN) workshop on the 11th and 12th of July 2009 at QUT titled, “Unboxing the iPhone: The Circuits of Digital Culture,” organised by Larissa Hjorth, Jean Burgess and Ingrid Richardson, supported by the CRN’s Cultural Technologies Node. This will provide opportunities to exchange ideas and experiences. http://www.uq.edu.au/crn/activities/glamm-iphone.html The workshop is also very timely in that it coincides with the six week residency of Prof. Carlo Ratti, Director of the SENSEable City Lab at MIT, and the 2009 inaugural Queensland Innovator in Residence: http://yearofcreativity.deta.qld.gov.au/innovator.html Audience We hope to attract a multidisciplinary range of HCSnet members and colleagues working in areas such as user experience design, human- computer interaction, digital media, social sciences and computing and engineering. The topic and themes to be explored are timely, relevant and significant to the research work of many academics in Australia and overseas who are looking at ways to help engender a culture of local and national participation and engagement. Many colleagues find that the underlying systems architecture and principles that have given rise to participatory culture in many social and lifestyle domains should be examined with a view to reappropriate them to foster civic engagement and a revival of citizenship. Event Format The workshop will be held over two days, on Mon 13th and Tue 14th July 2009, at the Creative Industries Precinct of Queensland University of Technology, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane. Participants will be given the opportunity to present their work with a view to stimulate an informed debate. The workshop will allow plenty of time for both breakout and plenary discussions. Submissions We are calling for 300-500 word position statements expressing the interest in the workshop or abstracts of proposed presentations from prospective participants. Queries can be sent via email to Marcus Foth at m.foth [AT] qut.edu.au. Please submit your abstract online by Fri 19 June 2009 at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/node/add/submission/2943 This workshop is free for anyone who has been HCSNet Member for 2 months prior to the workshop. Non-members need to pay $100 registration fee for this workshop via the online facility. Please register online by Fri 3 July 2009 at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/events/register/2943 Travel Bursaries HCSNet will fund a number of travel bursaries of $300 each to help cover the costs of travel and accommodation for participants from outside the Brisbane and South East Queensland area. HCSNet has also approved a Student Support Grant to enable students to participate. The provision of a submission as described above is a prerequisite for funding. If not all participants can be covered, funding grants will be allocated based on the relevance of your abstract to the workshop theme; also, students and early career researchers will have priority.
