CFP: Chapters on the Internet and Apocalyptic Belief
by RGH 06 Apr '09

06 Apr '09

DEADLINE May 1, 2009 CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTER PROPOSALS (Please distribute widely, and my apologies for any cross-posting.) Network Apocalypse: Visions of the End in an Age of Internet Media This edited collection of work by international scholars would document how Internet communication is creating, adapting, and recreating beliefs about an imminent mass transformation resulting in the end of human history. How are ancient prophetic beliefs faring in our everyday lives as they have become technologized by network communication? How do religious communities sharing these beliefs use the Internet? Are everyday religious believers empowered or disempowered by Internet technologies? Are gender, ethic, and racial divisions being broken down or reinforced? How are text-based prophetic traditions adapting to the more dynamic and fluid understanding of the Word in our digital age? The answers to these questions are important for scholars from a wide range of disciplines working on questions about how the Internet is changing some of our most powerful and recurring religious beliefs. Each chapter of this book will focus on a specific sample of discourse that features apocalyptic beliefs. Comparative and theoretical chapters are also welcomed. Methods may be quantitative, qualitative, or a combination of both. Chapter topics might include by are not limited to: Christian, Islamic, Jewish, or other traditional apocalyptic expression online; specific apocalyptic groups using the Internet; online prophecy and/or prayer practices; apocalyptic games, gamers, or gaming; apocalyptic expression in virtual worlds; apocalyptic communication via mobile communication technologies; new apocalyptic religious movements using the Internet; apocalyptic ideas or discourses that rely on theories of technology including concepts of “Gaia-mind,” “singularity,” and etc. Please submit the following documents via email to Rob Howard (rgh(a)rghoward.com) by May 1, 2009: 1) a preliminary title for the proposed chapter 2) a 100-250 word abstract of the proposed chapter 3) a current CV The successful abstracts will form part of a book proposal submitted in response to a request from Sheffield Phoenix Press for a series titled “The Apocalypse in Popular Culture.” Full texts will be requested at a later date. Sheffield Phoenix Press is an academic press specializing in topics of religion that is seeking to expand its catalog on apocalyptic belief in contemporary society. Advice on ripping a twitter feed
by Anstead Nicholas Mr (PSI) 06 Apr '09

06 Apr '09

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any experience of taking a twitter feed and downloading the context of it, so as it could be turned into a text file for analysis? Using either an individual's twitter page or twitter search you can generate an RSS feed (for example: http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=%23barackobama is the feed for #BarackObama). But I can't find a way to download it in a usable form. I did try Stu Shulman's excellent blog capture tool (https://surveyweb2.ucsur.pitt.edu/qblog/page_login.php) but it didn't seem to be able to see the feeds. Does anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks, Nick -- Nick Anstead Lecturer in Politics, School of Political, Social and International Studies, University of East Anglia [r] Arts 3.59 [e] n.anstead(a)uea.ac.uk [p] 01603 59 2888 [m] 07788 413 443 [b] www.nickanstead.com/blog

Call for book chapters — REMINDER
by Brügger Niels 06 Apr '09

06 Apr '09

***REMINDER --- DEADLINE 17 April*** CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS ***Please distribute widely - apologies for cross-posting*** Public Service Broadcasting Online This edited collection of work by international scholars analyses how broadcasters have used the world wide web to further their public service goals. How did broadcasters such as the BBC, ABC, ARD, DR, NRK and even the US Public Broadcasting Service translate their public service remits for this global digital platform? What were the differences and similarities between different broadcasters? What can these histories tell us about a future for public service in broadcasting? These questions are highly significant for those who value public service in broadcasting, and who hope that it will continue in a globalised digitalised communications environment. A number of public service broadcasters implemented web services amid dire predictions about the death, not only of public service broadcasting, but of broadcasting itself. Despite these circumstances, the websites were (and are) often extremely successful. In July 2008 BBC Online was the 27th most popular English Language website in the world, the ABC is consistently among the top ten websites in Australia, and DR Online has for a number of years been among the top three in Denmark. Perhaps these histories of success can take public service broadcasting more optimistically into the future. Each chapter of this book will focus on a broadcaster from a different country. Comparative chapters are also welcome. We welcome chapters that focus on: • policy and strategy; • regulation, media organisation; • web content; • users; • cross-media technology; • local and global relations. We are inviting you to submit via email to Maureen Burns (m.burns2(a)uq.edu.au ) or Niels Brugger (nb(a)imv.au.dk) by 17 April 2009: • a 500 word abstract of a proposed chapter; and • a preliminary outline of the proposed chapter. The successful abstracts will form part of a book proposal to be offered to academic publishers. another book announcement ...
by Charles Ess 02 Apr '09

02 Apr '09

Hi all, ... now that it's officially in stock at major online retailers (the ultimate index of reality ...) Digital Media Ethics. Cambridge: Polity Press - i.e., part of the their Digital Media and Society series, that includes publications by sister and brother AoIR-ists such as Jill Walker Rettberg and Alex Halavais. AoIRists Steve Jones and Elizabeth Buchanan have been very generous in their blurbs for the book, all of that can be read for oneself at the book's website: <http://www.polity.co.uk/digitalmediaandsociety/bookinfo_dme.aspx> As I emphasize in the introduction, the realities of networked technologies and thereby of our networked selves and communities mean that our responsibilities and obligations to one another are likewise distributed in significant new ways. In particular, this book would not have been possible without the generous assistance so characteristic of still other AoIRists, including Susanna Paasonen, Mia Consalvo, Miguel Sicart, and multiple colleagues at the Information and Media Studies Department of Aarhus University, including Niels Ole Finnemann, Jakob Linaa Jensen, Finn Olesen, Randi Markussen, and Poul Erik Nielsen. My deepest thanks to all. And, in these multiple ways, I think of the book as very much an instantiation exemplifying the interdisciplinary and international emphases of AoIR, and what AoIR can thus do for the sake of fostering multiple facets of Internet research. Especially in that light, I note the book's publication with as much pleasure for what it might say about AoIR as a scholarly community as for what it might mean for me. Enjoy! - c. Any Aussies or kiwis planning to go to AOIR10 in Milwaukee might like to check this: http://travel.latimes.com/daily-deal-blog/index.php/delta-australia-mark-425 2/ Apparently there's a price war going on for fares between NZ/Australia and the US, and the cheap fares (around 50% of the usual fare, I think - less than $700 return to LA) are available for travel until 24 October.
