Sports, fandom, and new media
by Jacqueline Vickery 28 Mar '09

28 Mar '09

Hello all, I am wondering if anyone is aware of some qualitative or quantitative research about sports and new media. I'm particularly interested in how sports fans are using message boards, cell phones, twitter, blogs, and other digital media to extend their communities and further perform their fan identities. Even more specifically, I am interested in American college football fans, but any research about sports fandom as it intersects with digital media would be really helpful. Thank you much, - jacqueline -- Jacqueline Vickery, PhD Student Co-Coordinating Editor, FlowTV.org Department of Radio-Television-Film University of Texas - Austin

The Guardian: Blogging / Podcasting / Twitter / Wikipedia - The Future Of (UK) Education?
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 28 Mar '09

28 Mar '09

Colleagues/ Recent-Late-Breaking-Revolutionary News ... !!! /Gerry The Guardian: Blogging / Podcasting / Twitter / Wikipedia - The Future Of (UK) Education? Children will no longer have to study the Victorians or the second world war under proposals to overhaul the primary school curriculum, the Guardian has learned. However, the draft plans will require children to master Twitter and Wikipedia and give teachers far more freedom to decide what youngsters should be concentrating on in classes. The proposed curriculum, which would mark the biggest change to primary schooling in a decade, strips away hundreds of specifications about the scientific, geographical and historical knowledge pupils must accumulate before they are 11 to allow schools greater flexibility in what they teach. [snip] The papers seen by the Guardian are draft plans for the detailed content of each of six core "learning areas" that Rose is proposing should replace the current 13 standalone subject areas. The proposals would require: * Children to leave primary school familiar with blogging, podcasts, Wikipedia and Twitter as sources of information and forms of communication. [snip] [snip] The six core areas are: understanding English, communication and languages, mathematical understanding, scientific and technological understanding, human, social and environmental understanding, understanding physical health and wellbeing, and understanding arts and design. Porto is on the Douro River and also near the Atlantic Ocean. It is famous for its port wine from the inland Portuguese wine region along the Douro River valley. During the free afternoons, students and teachers may explore the sidewalk café culture on Santa Catarina Street, a nearby pedestrian shopping area, or walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge spanning the Douro River to the promenade, restaurants, and port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia, directly opposite central Porto. Short river cruises may be taken in barcos rabelos, flat-bottomed boats traditionally used to ferry shipments of port wine. While Porto is famous for its ancient Roman ramparts and Gothic churches, it is also home to the Casa da Música concert hall, a superb example of modern architecture, finished in 2005, that has become an icon of the city. The Serralves Museum is a major cultural institution which hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and which features a world-class garden. In the late evenings, Porto hosts a thriving clubbing culture, and the city’s nightspots attract DJs from around the world. Porto has an international airport and is also served by trains from Lisbon and from Spain. By train, Porto is approximately three and a half hours north of Lisbon. Please direct questions regarding the program to Karen Gustafson, at kegustafson(a)mail.utexas.edu.

We are looking for a scale that can handle the fast-paced change in technology (e.g. MySpace being replaced in popularity with Facebook or Twitter, etc.). Our study, which we want to repeat with improved measures, focuses on how parents monitor their teen's online or cell phone activity, or how they use these technologies' to monitor their teen's general activity. At a minimum, they'll expect the social environment of work to reflect the social context of the Web, [snip]. If your company hopes to attract the most creative and energetic members of Gen F, it will need to understand these Internet-derived expectations, and then reinvent its management practices accordingly. [snip] With that in mind, I compiled a list of 12 work-relevant characteristics of online life. These are the post-bureaucratic realities that tomorrow's employees will use as yardsticks in in determining whether your company is "with it" or "past it." [snip] 1. All ideas compete on an equal footing. [snip] 2. Contribution counts for more than credentials. [snip] 3. Hierarchies are natural, not prescribed. [snip] [snip] 8. Power comes from sharing information, not hoarding it. [snip] 9. Opinions compound and decisions are peer-reviewed.[snip] [snip] 11. Intrinsic rewards matter most.[snip] 12. Hackers are heroes.[snip] These features of Web-based life are written into the social DNA of Generation F-and mostly missing from the managerial DNA of the average Fortune 500 company. It has been found that m-health is one area where there is a large potential for a meaningful contribution into the lives of individuals. We are interested in candidates for a three year Ph.D. to be run through the IT University of Copenhagen in the area of health provision via mobile communication in the developing world. The Ph.D. would be at the crossroads between information technology, development studies and evaluation research. It is possible that the Ph.D. will include interaction with other Nordic Universities that are working in the same area in addition to institutions in developing world. The specific topic of the work could include: - Survey and evaluation of existing programs - User and usability studies - Development studies - Evaluation and contextualization of mHealth systems In order to apply please contact Rich Ling (rili(a)itu.dk) for more information. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "mobile-society" group.
