CFP: New Sociotechnical Insights in Interaction Design 09: bridging social requirements and design- Workshop at Interact 2009

Call for Papers NEW SOCIOTECHNICAL INSIGHTS IN INTERACTION DESIGN 2009 bridging social requirements and design 25th of August 2009, Uppsala , Sweden http://Itcentre.tvu.ac.uk/~jabdelno/sociotechid09 Workshop at INTERACT 2009 12th IFIP TC13 Conference in Human-Computer Interaction www.interact2009.org About the Workshop One of the biggest challenges for HCI and CSCW is addressing the ongoing tensions created by the gap between social requirements and the affordances of technical design (Ackerman, 2000). The translation of social knowledge into design decisions is not a simple problem, but one that requires a redefinition of disciplinary boundaries and the subject and object of interaction design. Addressing this socio-technical gap requires a fresh look at how diverse areas of the social sciences explore and conceptualize the relation between people, society and technology under the rubric of 'sociotechnical'. While organizational studies of technology adoption have a well-defined conceptual framework known as sociotechnical systems theory with established principles (e.g.Mumford, 1993), the situation is not the same for interaction design research. The latter includes examples that give diverse meanings to the term 'sociotechnical' when involving social methods and theories (e.g. Hansen, 2006, Sommerville and Dewsbury, 2007). While perspectives like ethnography, ethnomethodology (Dourish and Button, 1998) and activity theory (Kaptelinin & Nardi, 2006) have had a clear impact in the design of interactive systems, the potential contribution of other social science perspectives such as American pragmatism (e.g Barnes, 2002; Mørch, 2009) or the Sociology of Technology (e.g. Bijker, 1995, Abdelnour-Nocera et al., 2007) have not become so clear and uniform despite the increased development of the pervasive and social proxy - mediating and mediated -- characters of interactive systems. This workshop addresses Interact's conference theme by looking for useful connections between social science research and interaction design practice. The workshop will bring together good examples of research in interaction design that refers to the term 'socio-technical'. It is hoped the workshop will identify opportunities for a socio-technical knowledge/conceptual framework in interaction design. This workshop is the second in a series of workshops that started in London in 2008 as an event jointly organized by the Interactions and Sociotechnical specialist groups of the British Computer Society. The workshop led to some of its best papers being developed into a special issue in the international journal of sociotechnology and knowledge development (Abdelnour-Nocera et al., 2009). Topics The workshop aims to continue enabling new translations from the social sciences to interaction design. The topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas: overview of related work in HCI and CSCW; critiques of earlier approaches to design; related work on sociotechnical design (e.g. participatory design, organizational informatics); actionable recommendations and guidelines for the conception, design and evaluation of interactive systems as 'social proxies'; improved methods for the gathering and elicitation of 'social requirements'; identifying socially responsible policies for interaction design; interaction design for web technology and social networking (e.g. web 2.0); appropriation of theories from the social sciences to inform interaction design; understanding participatory design as a sociotechnical endeavour in software engineering (e.g. agile methods; end-user development). Submissions Position paper submissions of up to 3,000 words are invited reporting on research or experiences on any of the above topics. All papers must be written and presented in English and will be peer reviewed by at least 2 reviewers. Submissions will be done through http://itcentre.tvu.ac.uk/journal . It is expected that the best papers presented at the workshop will be developed into an edited book in the workshop topic. Papers must be formatted according to the LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) format. CFP: Workshop on Information Policy and Data
by Andrea Tapia 24 Mar '09

24 Mar '09

Call for Paper Proposals Beyond Broadband Access: Data-Based Information Policy For a New Administration This is a Call for Proposals (Abstracts) for papers for a three day by-invitation Experts Workshop on approaches to developing data-based information policy. The deliverables are expected to be policy recommendations, a book and a new research agenda. Abstracts are due by April 15, 2009. Scope and Overview The stimulus bill just passed by the United States Congress and signed into law by President Obama allocates $7.2 billion to loan and grant programs for the deployment of broadband. Most recently the governments of Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, France and the United Kingdom have committed more spectrum to wireless broadband services, However, it is widely acknowledged that in order to fully realize the potential of broadband for the promotion of social progress, economic development and democracy, mere access is not enough. Technology, applications, education, awareness, skills, and content are among many factors that are to be taken into account. Understanding the interplay of all these factors is essential in order to take information policy to the next level. However, this demands both firm empirical and theoretical foundations. This Workshop is intended to propose a strategy for developing such a foundation a comprehensive, data-based approach for understanding policy consequences and improving policy outcomes through the utilization of meaningful empirical analyses, statistical methods, and the development of new conceptual frameworks. The Workshop will assemble a small group of highly skilled experts to seek breakthrough insights, which can be applied to current policy challenges. Important policy decisions are being made worldwide about information services that promote innovation, knowledge development, social equity and democratic values. These decisions can be improved if informed by empirical data that will assist decision makers in understanding the likely consequences of their policies. Many numbers are thrown around in the global information policy discourse regarding matters such as ³e- readiness², the ³digital divide², and the ³information society². What do these numbers actually mean? Are they the numbers that matter? Are they loaded for or against certain outcomes? Can the underlying methods and data be transformed into truly useful policy tools? Most of the existing approaches to measurements that affect information policy produce results which are descriptive and comparative (e.g., which nation has more Internet access), which are only useful up to a point. Clearly, what is needed are approaches which are explanatory and predictive, that help understand not only what has happened but also why, and to assist in making predictions about what will happen. This presents significant methodological challenges that must first be guided by theory, and in this field, theory is remarkably lacking. Description The Workshop will bring together a group of about twenty experts on information metrology from around the world. They will meet for three days in Washington, D.C., where, during morning and afternoon sessions, they will make presentations, share research, hear guest experts, discuss concrete approaches and new theories, identify problems and challenges, and develop conclusions and a future research agenda. Each participant will write and present an original paper to the group, which will then be the subject of questions and discussion, followed by a final Workshop summary session. Participants will be selected based on their abstracts and their identified ability to make a significant contribution based on their expertise or experience. Date and Location DATE: September 22-24, 2009 PLACE: The New America Foundation 1899 L Street NW, Suite 400 Washington, DC 20036 Topics Proposals should be based on current theoretical or empirical research, and may be from any disciplinary perspective. Subject areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following: Theory: Specification of objectives; development of theoretical models; identification of testable hypotheses; selection of appropriate methodologies for analysis. Data: Identification of key indicators; development of consistent data standards; data collection and verification; data access. Modeling: Development of empirical models; dealing with institutional diversity and complexity; coping with dynamic technological change. Multidimensional visual modeling of large bodies of data. Application: Formulating answerable questions; Making predictions about outcomes; Analyzing relevant data; Using outcomes to refine theory and hypotheses. Policy Development: Organization of statistical resources; conversion of results of statistical analysis into policy guidance; incorporation of results in shaping policy or legislation; political use of findings. Submission Deadline Submissions are due by April 15, 2009. Submissions should be made to expwkshopDBIP2009(a)psu.edu. Abstracts are not to exceed 500 words. Abstracts should be accompanied by a brief biographical description of the author(s) (no more than two pages). Decisions will be announced by May 29, 2009. Accepted papers will be due on Sept. 1, 2009, and authors are expected to present the accepted submissions. Support Funds Final funding plans are still being developed, but it is expected that some funding will be available to help offset the costs of attendance for accepted papers, with a priority given to international participants. Re: [Air-L] Characteristics of online posters

Dear Matthew and his friend - I think the quantitative surveys done by the Pew Internet & American Life project might tell one something about the frequency of online posting. www.pewinternet.org/ I am assuming these frequencies most often follows Pareto's law - that 20% of the people do 80% of the posting, etc. etc. however it would be interesting to know if that is indeed the case. There is some quantitative work on online posters to discussion lists. This project might be helpful: Wiley, D. (2002). "Calculating amount of activity in threaded discussion spaces." Sample calculations are shown and discussed for six month archives of two mailing lists relating to open source software. http://wiley.ed.usu.edu/docs/discussion08.pdf I am assuming the Wiley reference could point to further work done in this area. apologies for x-posting, distribute as appropriate -jh CFP: Learning Infrastructures in the Social Sciences and Humanities Special issue of the journal Learning Inquiry (http://www.springerlink.com/content/120592/ ) Edited by Jeremy Hunsinger Papers Due: May 15th 2009 Please contact the editor to discuss topics at jhuns.((a))vt.edu (remove brackets) In the last 20 years, the learning infrastructures of the social sciences and humanities have transformed dramatically toward a more plural set of practices, methods, systems, and tools. In this issue, we are looking for contributions from social informatics, humanistic informatics, cultural informatics, digital humanities, internet studies, design research, media studies, and related fields dealing with the learning infrastructures. I am seeking papers that deal empirically, analytically and/or critically with the learning infrastructures in the social sciences and humanities. Cyberinfrastructures, physical infrastructures and organizational infrastructures have been transformed through the politics, economics, and technologies surrounding our learning infrastructures. Learning infrastructures are part of professors and students scholarly experiences everyday. These infrastructures are part of how students begin their engagement with the social sciences and humanities and perhaps become part of how they maintain that engagement throughout their lives. Beyond our professors, departments, centers and institutes, our learning infrastructures are mediating our disciplinarity and interdisciplinarities to our students. In short, learning infrastructures are a part of how students learn to be scholars in various disciplines and citizens in the world-at-large. Part of the debate surrounding learning infrastructures in the social sciences and humanities is the over/under-definition and over/ underdetermination of terms such as learning and infrastructure in disciplinary and interdisciplinary discourses. In this CFP, I want to encourage papers that help to define and critically engages those terms. Possible topics: • Transformation of institutions in relation to learning infrastructures • New methods, new understandings in the social sciences and humanities related to learning infrastructures • New disciplines, interdisciplines and transdisciplines and learning infrastructures • Political economics of learning infrastructures • Ethics, norms, and politics surrounding learning infrastructures • Openness and/or closedness in learning infrastructures • Social/Cultural/Informatics informatics and learning infrastructures • New directions for learning infrastructures based on social sciences and humanities • Cultural environmentalism and learning infrastructures • Knowledge/Design ecologies and learning infrastructures Review process will be double blind peer review following editorial selection. We expect to place fewer than 8 papers in this special issue. We would prefer papers between 4000-16000 words. Papers should be submitted tohttp://www.editorialmanager.com/linq/ Please contact the editor to discuss your paper and/or when you submit your paper.
