Hi Tina. My colleagues and I conducted a study of 1722 middle school students in Maryland. We have a manuscript forthcoming at New Media & Society looking at gender differences in mobile phone usage among middle school students and several others that are in process at the moment (some focusing on gender and some on race - most looking at a variety of types of technology usage). I'm also in the process of conducting a study of over 1,000 4th and 5th graders in Birmingham, Alabama before they receive their XO laptops and then following up approximately 6 months later. Students are over 90% African American in the sample. No manuscripts yet, but we have great data on all kinds of technology use! Someone at Michigan State has also done a study with youth, looking at racial and perhaps gender differences in technology usage. Can't recall the name at this time. Can you tell me more about your project? Good luck. Shelia ******************************** Shelia R. Dear Andrew, Your topic is very interesting. I am conducting a research (multiple cases study) about organizational enablers and barriers of KMS in educational context. One of the methods used for gathering data is an online survey. I use limesurvey (www.limesurvey.org/) as a survey tool. It is not a perfect tool, but its enough Where could I found your conference paper with a literature review in KM adoption? The JITP Editor strongly endorses new and experimental approaches involving collaboration with information and computer science scholars. Potential topics might include, but are not limited to: - citizen initiated campaign videos, - candidates' use of YouTube, - bloggers use of YouTube to influence the primaries or election, - the impact of YouTube on traditional or new media coverage of the election cycle, - the effect of YouTube on citizen interest, knowledge, engagement, or voting behavior, - social network analysis of YouTube and related election-oriented sites, - political theory or communication theory and YouTube in the context of the 2008 election, - new metrics that support the study of the "YouTube Effect" on elections, - archives for saving and tools for mapping the full landscape of YouTube election content, - use of YouTube in the classroom as a way to teach American electoral politics, or - reviews of existing scholarship about YouTube. Keynote Speakers Day 1: Richard Rogers, Professor in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam and Director of govcom.org. Dr. Rogers is a Web epistemologist, an area of study where the main claim is that the Web is a knowledge culture distinct from other media. Rogers concentrates on the research opportunities that would have been improbable or impossible without the Internet. His research involves studying and building info-tools. He studies and makes use of the adjudicative or 'recommender' cultures of the Web that help to determine the reputation of information as well as organizations. The most well-known tool Rogers has developed with his colleagues is the Issue Crawler, a server-side Web crawler, co-link machine and graph visualizer. Day 2: Noshir Contractor, Northwestern University, the Jane S. & William J. White Professor of Behavioral Sciences in the School of Engineering, School of Communication and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, USA. He is the Director of the Science of Networks in Communities (SONIC) Research Group at Northwestern University. He is investigating factors that lead to the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of dynamically linked social and knowledge networks in communities. Specifically, his research team is developing and testing theories and methods of network science to map, understand and enable more effective networks in a wide variety of contexts including communities of practice in business, science and engineering communities, disaster response teams, public health networks, digital media and learning networks, and in virtual worlds, such as Second Life. Paper Submissions Authors are invited to prepare and submit to JITP a manuscript following one of the six submission formats by January 21, 2009. These formats include research papers, policy viewpoints, workbench notes, review essays, book reviews, and papers on teaching innovation. Call for papers: New journal launching Summer/Fall 2009
by Rebecca B Reynolds 07 Jan '09

07 Jan '09

---------------------------- Call for Papers: Advances in Research on Information and Technology Integrative Papers for Practitioners and Scientists, published internationally in electronic and paper formats by the Academy of Asian Scholars (AAS) Launching Summer/Fall 2009 ---------------------------- Journal Description: The information field evolves quickly. Working professionals who manage information - in companies, libraries, government, education or non-profits - must strive to keep up with the rapid development of the field. A new series of papers, entitled Advances in Research on Information and Technology will provide a concentrated dose of critical updates for busy professionals who must access the latest and most important findings in the information field. Advances will publish articles representative of the scholarship of "integration" -- defined by Ernest Boyer in his work, Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate (1990), as making connections across the disciplines, placing the specialties in larger context, illuminating data in a revealing way, and often educating non-specialists (18--19). Articles and publications representing the scholarship of integration are under-represented in the information and technology research literature, however such synthesis is increasingly necessary for effective and strategic practice in both the scholarly and professional domains. Papers published in Advances will assemble, analyze, and synthesize primary research papers across the information disciplines, including: library and information science, information systems, information policy, and related, newly emerging areas. The journal will target the readership of advanced information professionals, as well as the scholarly community, keeping readers current to the most timely and resonant themes in research on information and technology. Comprehensive literature reviews (e.g., synthesis articles derived from theses) and meta-analyses are encouraged. The publishers of the Advances series is exploring a unique sales royalties model, in which authors will be paid for each published paper, based on print circulation, library and institutional subscriptions, and individual electronic article downloads. Presently, we are soliciting submissions for the ongoing series, scheduled to launch with its inaugural issue in July 2009. Submissions of integration pieces may be either in "bulletin" format (~2500--3000 words) or "monograph" format (~5000--6000 words). We also welcome proposals for longer publications. Each paper should cover one topic in depth, with clarity. The standard issue will cover a range of topics targeted towards the advanced information professional. Some special volumes will be themed. You may also propose to guest-edit a themed volume, thoroughly defining the theme proposed, and providing a list of relevant authors and individual article topics, to broadly reflect the given theme. Below is a suggested list of topics in the field of information technology field; all topics related to information and technology are welcome. * Data mining * Digital asset management * Digital literacy * Digital libraries * Evidence-based decision making * Human-computer interaction * Information economics * Information management * Information policy * Information privacy * Information retrieval * Information security * Large system design * Library management * Metadata * Network management * Open source technology * User behavior * Virtual organizations Advances in Research on Information and Technology will deliver content to laptops, mobile devices, and book readers in multiple languages, almost immediately after the manuscript is finalized. The publication will also be available in paper and electronic form by subscription to libraries, institutions, and other organizations. The editorial selection process is led by Senior Editor, Dr. Jian Qin of Syracuse University, as well invited guest editors for themed volumes, and our distinguished Editorial Board, to be announced in the first quarter of 2009. The deadline for manuscript submission for the inaugural paper series is January 31, 2009. Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis, and should be made in electronic format. Please provide the full article, and including an abstract of approximately 500 words. This change of paradigm is currently profoundly transforming most areas of our life: our interactions with other people, our relationships, ways of gathering information, ways of developing social norms, opinions, attitudes and even legal aspects, as well as ways of working and doing business. The change also raises a strong need for theoretical, empirical and applied studies related to how people may interact on the Web, how they actually do so, and what new possibilities and challenges are emerging in the social, business and technology dimensions. Following the two previous events, the goal of the 3rd Workshop is to bring researchers and practitioners together to explore the issues and challenges related to social aspects of the Web. TOPICS OF INTEREST * People on the social Web * Individuals on the Web (identity, privacy, incentives, activity models, trust and reputation, ...) * Communities on the Web (roles, leadership, social norms and conflicts, types of communities, ...) * Collaboration on the Web (content and data development and maintenance, decision taking ...) * On-line and off-line life (mixed interaction models, on-line vs. off-line communities, ... ) * Business activities in the social Web (sales, exchanges, word-of-mouth, recruiting, marketing, ...) * Data and content on the social Web * Social content organization (tagging, classification, recommendations, collaborative filtering, ...) * Content dynamics (content flow and evolution, mashups, comments, collaborative creation, ...) * Semantic social Web (standards, annotation of social content/data, ontology learning, ...) * Data and social network portability (standards, policies, technologies, licenses, ...) * Social software and services * Specific types of social software (social networks, blogs, wikis, resources sharing, ...) * Development (architectures, technologies, platforms, infrastructures, ...) * Adoption (critical mass problem, socio-technical gap, data and social network migration, ...) * Alternative user interaction models (games, mobile, mixed reality, ...) * Social software in the enterprise (knowledge management, CRM, collaborative software, ...) * Business models of social services (pricing, cost models, customer relation, content acquisition, ...) * Mining the social Web * Mining user-generated content (opinion, comments, rankings, forums, ...) * Mining the social graph (collaborative filtering, social network analysis, ...) * Mining activity patterns (access, used features, participation, interactions, ...) * Entity-centric content integration (on people, experts, objects, companies, locations, ...) * Social Web mining in business (for marketing, products design, customer support, ...)
