i³ 2009: Information: Interactions and Impact – Call for Papers
by Kate Friday 07 Jan '09

07 Jan '09

***Apologies for Cross-posting*** Some list members may find the following of interest: Following the success of the first Information: Interactions and Impact (i³) International Conference, (Aberdeen 2007), the second i³ conference will take place at The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, on 22-25 June 2009. Our conference website is now live at http://www.i3conference2009.org.uk , and conference booking will open on 19th January. i3 is concerned with the quality and effectiveness of the interaction between people and information and how this interaction can bring about change in individuals, organisations, communities and society. The conference will look beyond the issues of use and accessibility of technology to questions about the way people interact with the information and knowledge content of today's systems and services, and how this might ultimately affect the impact of that information on individuals, organisations and communities. Call for Submissions We invite the submission of high quality papers that report original research or critically discuss underlying methodological issues associated with the main themes of the conference. Papers may reflect ongoing or completed research studies and should not have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. We would particularly welcome papers which address two or more of the following conference themes: • the quality and effectiveness of user/information interactions (e.g. information literacy); • patterns of information behaviour in different contexts; • impact of information or information services on people, organisations, communities and society (e.g. social, learning, cultural and economic outcomes of engagement with information); • more effective decision making. Submissions are invited for: • Full papers; (40 minutes duration -35 minutes with 5 minutes for questions); • Short papers (15 minutes duration); • Posters; and • Round table discussions (60-80 minutes duration). Authors who are accepted to give full papers at i3 are also invited to submit a full paper for publication in a special issue for the journal Libri. Submissions will be anonymously reviewed by two members of an international programme committee specialising in one or more of the conference research streams. Notification of acceptance will be emailed to authors and will also include the comments of the reviewers. A list of titles of accepted papers and posters will be published on the i3 website. Full details of the requirements and instructions for submission can be found at http://www.i3conference2009.org.uk/call09.htm . The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 6th February 2009. For any further information please see http://www.i3conference2009.org.uk, or contact the conference team at i3information(a)rgu.ac.uk. Livejournal Troubles?
by Richard Forno 06 Jan '09

06 Jan '09

FYI....may be nothing, may be fortelling of things to come. Either way, might be wise to consider backing your journals up, those who have them. Is anyone here more knowledgable about this report involving one of (I think) the more higher-quality social networks than little old me? --rf The Russian Bear Slashes a Social Network By Owen Thomas, 2:24 AM on Tue Jan 6 2009, 28,824 views The bubble in social networking has burst, decisively. LiveJournal, the San Francisco-based arm of Sup, a Russian Internet startup, has cut 12 of 28 U.S. employees — and offered them no severance, we're told. The quirky site, part blog and part social network, is best known for its users' weird obsessions — like the troublesome clique of Harry Potter erotica writers, whose outré tastes ran afoul of LiveJournal's efforts to comply with U.S. child-pornography laws. (Oddly, the site also gained a following in Russia, which led to its acquisition by Sup.) All that adds up to an environment even more distasteful to advertisers than the typical social site. The company's product managers and engineers were laid off, leaving only a handful of finance and operations workers — which speaks to a website to be left on life support. Matt Berardo, a Yahoo executive hired on last summer, has also left. < - > http://valleywag.gawker.com/5124184/the-russian-bear-slashes-a-social-netwo…

E-Learning CFP on globally networked learning in higher education (Jan 31)
by Doreen Starke-Meyerring, Dr. 06 Jan '09

06 Jan '09

Dear colleagues, I hope you had a restorative break and the New Year has gotten off to a good start for you. This is just a brief reminder that the deadline for the special issue of E-Learning on globally networked learning in higher education is just around the corner (Jan 31). If you or your program are engaged in partnerships that use e-learning to link the students in your courses with peers, communities, NGOs, companies, and others across national boundaries or with local community partners to address issues of globalization in their courses or to provide a global perspective of their disciplines, this special issue is a great place to share your work. The goal of this special issue is to bring together contributors from different disciplines to explore what kind of disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning and knowledge making these partnered learning environments enable. So, if you know of colleagues in other disciplines engaged in this kind of work, please pass this CfP on to them. Naturally, it would be great to have proposals from internet studies colleagues, perhaps about networked courses that link students to study the implications of global intellectual property policies, internet regulation, or activism comparatively, etc.... I would be glad to talk, email, or skype about proposal ideas informally. Best regards, Doreen CALL FOR PAPERS: ****************************************************************************************** Special Issue of E-Learning on globally networked learning in higher education ****************************************************************************************** E-Learning, a peer-reviewed international journal directed towards the study of e-learning in its diverse aspects, invites submissions for a special issue on “Globalizing Higher Education Across the Disciplines: Innovative Partnerships, Policies, and Pedagogies for Globally Networked Learning Environments,” guest edited by Doreen Starke-Meyerring. Early national and global policy discourses around the role of the internet in higher education advanced utopian and dystopian understandings of the internet as a new global market for existing industrial-model, locally produced higher education courses and programs to be repackaged for global delivery and global trade online. As a result, hundreds of millions of public and private dollars have been spent on global internet-based higher education marketing consortia, many of which have since failed. As initial responses to digital technologies, these initiatives had largely tried to reproduce established institutionally bounded practices in digital environments, disregarding the networked nature and peer production potential of digital technologies, and therefore lacking pedagogical innovation to re-envision learning in a globally networked world. At the same time, however, many faculty across the disciplines in higher education have begun to develop alternative pedagogies and learning environments that take advantage of the globally networked nature of digital technologies. These globally networked learning environments (GNLEs) connect students with peers, instructors, professionals, experts, and communities from diverse contexts to help students develop new ways of knowledge making and learn how to build shared learning and knowledge cultures across traditional boundaries, especially with peers and communities that have been the most marginalized and disadvantaged in the emerging global social and economic order. However, such GNLEs are difficult to develop because they require robust partnerships, must negotiate a multitude of divergent national and institutional local policies, and as innovations, face challenges of institutional support infrastructures and policies designed around traditional local classrooms. The purpose of this special issue is to understand the current state of globally networked learning environments across disciplines in higher education and to advance insights into their development and sustainability. The special issue therefore invites both conceptual contributions that address larger questions surrounding GNLEs as well as research studies of GNLE development across disciplines, addressing questions such as these (among others): - What is the current state of globally networked learning in higher education? - How have GNLEs addressed issues of global and local social justice? - What kind of disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge making do GNLEs enable that would be difficult to achieve in traditional institutionally bounded classrooms? How? - What challenges do educators face in designing, implementing, and sustaining such partnered learning environments? How do they overcome them? - How do national and global policies regulating higher education as well as those regulating digital technologies (e.g. privacy, intellectual property, and censorship policies) enable or constrain the development of GNLEs? - How do local institutional policies, including policies regulating digital technologies, enable or constrain the development of GNLEs? - What institutional initiatives (e.g., task forces, innovator networks, centres for research and faculty support, integrated support networks) have emerged to support the work of faculty innovators? - What research is needed to advance globally networked learning environments in higher education? Schedule:  Proposals indicating the purpose, rationale, and possible approach of contributions (250-500 words): January 31, 2009  Submissions (full manuscripts): May 31, 2009  Accepted manuscripts revised for publication: September 1, 2009  Scheduled publication of issue: Winter 2010 Please direct inquiries and proposals to the guest editor: Doreen Starke-Meyerring doreen.starke-meyerring(a)mcgill.ca Please also contact the editor if you are interested in serving as a reviewer for this special issue. ****************************************************** Doreen Starke-Meyerring, Ph.D. Associate Director, Centre for the Study and Teaching of Writing Assistant Professor, Rhetoric and Writing Studies Department of Integrated Studies in Education McGill University 3700, rue McTavish Montréal, QC H3A 1Y2, Canada T: 514.398.1308 F: 514.398.4529 E: doreen.starke-meyerring @ mcgill.ca W: http://webpages.mcgill.ca/staff/group1/dstark1/web/starke-meyerring/ President, Canadian Association for the Study of Discourse and Writing/ Association candienne de rédactologie http://casdw-acr.mcgill.ca ******************************************************

Invitation to a research survey on the adoption of knowledge management systems
by Andrew Wat 06 Jan '09

06 Jan '09

Dear colleagues, I am conducting a research about the adoption of knowledge management systems for my PhD thesis in the University of South Australia. Previous studies of Knowledge Management Systems adoption have generally been based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). From this perspective, the main inputs to knowledge management adoption have been the attitudinal factors of perceived ease-of-use and perceived usefulness towards the technology under investigation. Empirical investigations of KMS adoption have either merely replicated TAM or included many other antecedents in the model, most of which have failed to explain why such adoption is (not) happening. A conference paper with a literature review in knowledge management adoption, characteristics of knowledge management usage behavior and proposed model using a perspective of organizational citizenship behavior is published and presented in the 4th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Knowledge Management. This survey is to collect data about the particular organizational and individual/personal factors to verify my proposed hypotheses in their effects in the adoption of knowledge management systems. If you would like to know more about the survey, please click InformationSheet.pdf<http://kmresearcher.wikispaces.com/file/view/InformationSheet.pdf> Please click the following link to participate the online survey: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pJP5Sg7Y-NQfvM2JzkKABQQ&hl=en Thanks Andrew

Publication quality

Murray Turoff wrote: > We have too many publishers who are pushing almost a vanity press So true. How many conferences are thinly disguised tourism? (I admit to having gone to some myself :-). There might be some relief through inter-operable means of tracking article downloads and citations, which could inform the academic promotion process. For example ACM, Google Scholar, and Berkeley Electronic Press track article downloads and citations, see: http://cis471.blogspot.com/2009/01/rating-and-reputation-in-scholarly.html This sort of data could become input to ones scholarly "reputation." I think it would be interesting to see a comprehensive list of both new media studies grad programs and journals, and/or a reputational ranking of new media studies grad programs and journals. This would be not unlike what the National Communication Association has on their site, and it would be very helpful, especially since new media studies programs are housed in such varied places (e.g., information science, communication, psychology...). A reputational ranking study could happen according to the method NCA used, perhaps...send some surveys out to listservs and so on and just get people to list what they think are the "10 best" journals or programs, for instance. A difficult, politically-charged task, no doubt...but a needed one. I'll help if I can, and if my graudate advisors (who read this listserv) give their blessing. :-) db --- Daren C.
