Building on the worldwide momentum toward Open Access to publicly funded research, Open Access Day will create a key opportunity for the higher education community and the general public to understand more clearly the opportunities of wider access and use of content. Open Access Day will invite researchers, educators, librarians, students, and the public to participate in live, worldwide broadcasts of events. In North America, events will be held at 7:00 PM (Eastern) and 7:00 PM (Pacific) and feature appearances from: *Sir Richard Roberts, Ph.D., F.R.S.* Joint winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1993 for discovering split genes and RNA splicing, one of 26 Nobel Prize- winners to sign the Open Letter to U.S. Congress in support of taxpayer access to publicly funded research, and currently at New England Biolabs, USA. [7PM Eastern] *Philip E. Bourne, Ph.D. * Philip E. Bourne is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of PLoS Computational Biology and the author of the popular PLoS Computational Biology Ten Simple Rules Series. The result: Science is moving way faster and more people are part of the dialogue. Beyond email, teleconferencing and search engines, there are many examples: blogs where scientists can correspond casually about their work long before it is published in a journal; social networks that are scientist friendly such as Laboratree and Ologeez; GoogleDocs and wikis which make it easy for people to collaborate via the Web on single documents; a site called Connotea that allows scientists to share bookmarks for research papers; sites like Arxiv, where physicists post their "pre-print" research papers before they are published in a print journal; OpenWetWare which allows scientists to post and share new innovations in lab techniques; the Journal of Visualized Experiments, an open-access site where you can see videos of how research teams do their work; GenBank, an online searchable database for DNA sequences; Science Commons, a non-profit project at MIT to make research more efficient via the Web, such as enabling easy online ordering of lab materials referenced in journal articles; virtual conferences; online open-access (and free) journals like Public Library of Science (PLoS); and open-source software that can often be downloaded free off Web sites. Société de l'information ? Appel à publication, tic&société, vol. 2, no 2 http://www.ticetsociete.org L'expression de « société de l'information » est devenue courante dans un vaste ensemble de discours scientifiques, politiques, économiques et journalistiques depuis plus d'un quart de siècle. Dès les années soixante-dix, il a été question d'une société qui serait de plus en plus caractérisée par l'information, la communication, le savoir, la connaissance ainsi que - et peut-être surtout - par les dispositifs techniques susceptibles de les véhiculer. Selon les moments, les termes mis en avant - « village global », « société câblée », « informatisation de la société », « société de la connaissance », « société du savoir » et « société de l'information » - ont changé mais ont toujours dépeint une société reposant sur la multiplication des échanges d'informations dans un contexte de développement accéléré des technologies de l'information et de la communication (TIC). Plus récemment, ce syntagme a connu de nouveaux développements autour de technologies réseautiques comme Internet et la téléphonie mobile. Il a même donné son titre à deux rencontres organisées par l'Union internationale des télécommunications (UIT) sous les auspices des Nations-Unies, en 2003 à Genève et à Tunis en 2005. Si l'on en croit les promoteurs de ce projet, la société de l'information correspondrait à une phase de « révolution numérique » dans le secteur des TIC qui entraînerait la libre circulation des informations, des idées et des connaissances dans le monde entier et dans tous les secteurs. Parmi les universitaires, celui qui a formulé la plus complète des thèses sur la société de l'information est Manuel Castells avec sa trilogie sur la société en réseaux. Une analyse à laquelle a répondu de façon systématique Nicholas Garnham qui, s'il reconnaît que les TIC ont pris une place croissante dans nos sociétés au fil des décennies, refuse de considérer pour autant que l'information, la communication et les technologies afférentes sont les nouveaux moteurs de nos économies, voire de nos sociétés. Il nous apparaît important d'aller au-delà de ces oppositions en proposant des réflexions qui reposent sur des analyses de terrain, que celles-ci fassent appel à des méthodologies quantitatives ou qualitatives, micro ou macro. Les propositions d'articles pourront porter sur la société entendue d'un point de vue global à partir d'approches historiques, sociologiques, économiques, géopolitiques ou encore sur un aspect de la vie sociale en particulier : la famille, le travail, la politique, le militantisme, les loisirs, la santé, la science, l'éducation, la culture, les relations interculturelles, etc. Les contenus retenus doivent adopter soit un point de vue historique - par exemple reposant sur une méthodologie longitudinale - soit être ancrés dans le quotidien et sur le court terme, mais auquel cas, il est nécessaire de replacer l'analyse dans une perspective à plus long terme. Nous privilégions les travaux qui mettent l'accent sur les mutations à l'¦uvre au cours de ces dernières décennies dans les différentes composantes de la société ou qui remettent en cause de prétendues transformations. Il est également possible d'envoyer des textes hors thème. Nous nous garderons toutefois le droit, soit de les diffuser dans la rubrique « Varia », soit de les garder pour un prochain numéro thématique. L'ensemble des manuscrits sont jugés par deux évaluateurs, évaluatrices selon la procédure de lecture à l'aveugle caractéristique des revues à évaluation par les pairs. Les textes doivent faire environ 40.000 caractères espaces compris. Toutefois, nous acceptons qu'ils fassent entre 35.000 et 45.000 caractères espaces compris. odd query?

Hi all, a colleague who is responsible for sustainability initiatives on our campus has asked me if I knew anything about the following: a careful, quantitatively oriented analysis of the comparative costs - both direct (e.g., consumption of electricity, toner, etc.) and indirect (costs of manufacturing and distributing paper, computers, monitors, etc.) - of a) paper-based techniques in teaching and learning - e.g., 5-page lab reports in a composition book turned in weekly, to be read, hand-marked by the instructor, and then returned to the students, vis-à-vis b) comparable (at least roughly) paperless techniques - e.g., written work produced and turned in electronically, graded and commented electronically, and then returned to the students electronically? I know that the advent of the paperless office has been heralded for at least three, going on four decades, coupled with the proclamation of the imminent death of the book, etc. - and that for many good reasons (besides, in my case, sheer curmudgeonly Ludditism), paper and books retain their unique places and roles in learning (and elsewhere). So I, for one, would argue strenuously for the ongoing importance of what Naomi Baron so nicely encapsulates in her recent book _Always On: Language in an Online and Mobile World_ (Oxford U.P.) under the heading of written culture (thanks, Naomi!), even if paper and books might be comparatively more expensive from a material and environmental standpoint. But however one views these matters pedagogically, etc. - the question is a good one: does anyone know what the comparative costs really are? Many thanks in advance for any pointers listmembers can provide! - charles ess PS: I'm using ch. 9, "Gresham's Ghost: Challenges to a Written Culture" in my Freshman class to introduce them to my arcane insistence on their developing their own commonplace book - and thereby as an introit to further work in Plato's Phaedrus as a way of helping us develop a framework for thinking through the relationships between our technologies of communication and our conceptions of our selves, our relationships to larger communities, etc. I recommend the chapter - and the book at large - heartily! - c.
