ground transport

I may have missed this, and if so, apologies, but... Is there a recommended mode of transport from the Copenhagen airport to the University and conference site? Do the convention hotels run shuttles? Is there a shuttle company? Or do we just have to take a taxi? -- Mark D. Best practices in online outreach and activism across multiple cultures
by Deborah Elizabeth Finn 08 Oct '08

08 Oct '08

Dear AIR Colleagues, I'm asking this question on behalf of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (<http://ippnweupdate.wordpress.com/> and <http://ippnw.org>). As you can probably imagine, this group mobilizes physicians and medical students from around world to abolish nuclear weapons. They also work to prevent injuries caused by conventional weapons. IPPNW (with a little help from yours truly) is currently looking at the way that it uses online resources for outreach, activism, advocacy, and organizing among its stakeholders. While the physicians and medical students share the experience of a medical education, they are not all from a single culture and do not all speak English as a first language. Therefore the team at the international office is looking for best practices in online outreach, activism, advocacy, and organizing across multiple cultures. Any suggestions? Links to peer-reviewed research and how-to manuals would be extremely welcome. Many thanks and best regards from Deborah Deborah Elizabeth Finn Cyber-Yenta Boston, Massachusetts, USA deborah_elizabeth_finn(a)post.harvard.edu www.cyber-yenta.org Skype: Deborah909 Twitter: Deborah909 LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/deborah909 "Nothing softeneth the Arrogance of our Nature like a Mixture of some Frailties. "Hack the Debate" - Twitter and CurrentTV join together
by Tuszynski, Stephanie 07 Oct '08

07 Oct '08

Some of you may already be aware of this. For all the debates in the US presidential election this month, CurrentTV (the network founded by former Vice President Al Gore) has collaborated with Twitter.com to run a program called "Hack the Debate." Essentially what happens is CurrentTV selects messages being posted to their Twitter channel/page and runs those messages on the bottom of the tv screen during the debates. It's a little like Pop Up Video for politics, for those who remember that show. Current and Twitter are both promoting this as being the first time this has ever been done, running live "tweets" over a tv broadcast. I'm sure it's the first time it's been done with Twitter, but running text messages over a tv broadcast has been done before, I'm pretty sure. I've participated in both of these so far. There's a severe lag between what's posted to Twitter and what appears on the television screen, leading to some unintended humor and of course the majority of the actual messages on Twitter don't appear on the television screen (the network is also filtering out profanity, etc.). At first there wasn't much interaction between people posting on the Twitter channel but during the VP debate you started to see more messages being aimed at other people posting, so who knows what will happen during these last 2 debates. http://current.com/topics/88834922_hack_the_debate PS - See some of you in Austin this week, I hope! The Coding Analysis Toolkit: A Hands-On Training at
by Stuart Shulman 06 Oct '08

06 Oct '08

I wanted to make sure that a.o.i.r. conference attendees were aware of this late addition to the program. I will be doing a free CAT/BAT training on Saturday the 18th at the conference. If you are interested in capturing and coding blog data or coding text in general, I hope to see you there. The Coding Analysis Toolkit: A Hands-On Training Saturday October 18th - 9.00 am (Room: 3A52) Dr. Stuart Shulman is the founder of the Qualitative Data Analysis Program (QDAP), which is a fee-for-service coding lab at the University of Pittsburgh. QDAP and now QDAP-UMass staff and coders work on coding projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other U.S. funding agencies. Dr. Shulman (Oregon Ph.D. 1999) has been the Principal Investigator and Project Director on related National Science Foundation-funded research projects focusing on electronic rulemaking, human language technologies, manual annotation, digital citizenship, and service-learning efforts in the United States. At AoIR, he will lead a hands-on, computer lab-based training introducing to the Coding Analysis Toolkit (CAT), a web-based service designed to facilitate the measurement and reporting the reliability and validity of work completed by multiple coders. He will also introduce the Blog Analysis Toolkit (BAT), which is designed to capture blog posts and archive them for analysis in CAT. Collaborative Information Behavior - Call for Chapters
by Jonathan Foster 06 Oct '08

06 Oct '08

**WITH APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTINGS** FIRST CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Proposal Submission Deadline: November 15, 2008 Collaborative Information Behavior: User Engagement and Communication Sharing A book edited by Dr. Jonathan Foster University of Sheffield, UK http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=514 Introduction Collaborative information behavior can be broadly defined as the study of the behaviors, practices, and systems that enable people to collaborate during the seeking, searching, retrieval and use of information. In recent years, it has become commonplace for users and organizations alike to engage in such collaborative information behavior. Collaboration may be quite direct when users seek, retrieve, and use information as part of a shared work activity (e.g. research and development project) or learning activity e.g. (collaborative group work); or more indirect as users draw for example on the automated recommendations generated by collaborative filtering and reputation systems. In the fields of information studies, information science, information systems, human-computer interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work, there is a need for an edited collection of articles in this area. Objective of the Book This book will aim to coordinate and integrate current research and practices in the area of collaborative information behavior. It will aim to provide information on empirical research findings, theoretical frameworks, and models relevant to understanding the following aspects: the range of contexts in which collaborative information behavior occurs; the range of approaches, qualitative and quantitative, currently being used to study collaborative information behavior; and the range of systems and practices that enable and constrain its occurrence. Target Audience The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals, educators, and researchers working in the fields of information studies, information science, information management, information retrieval, and knowledge management, human-computer interaction and computer-supported cooperative work. Practitioners who have role in organizational information, communication, and knowledge sharing will also find the publication of value in understanding and assessing the collaborative information behaviors that occur within their organizations. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: Collaborative information behavior - conceptual frameworks Collaborative information behavior - methodologies and methods Collaborative information behavior - qualitative and quantitative approaches Collaborative information behavior - frameworks and models Collaborative information behavior in business settings Collaborative information behavior in educational settings Collaborative information behavior in legal settings Collaborative information behavior in medical settings Collaborative information behavior in government Collaborative information behavior in other professional contexts Collaborative information behavior in everyday life Collaborative information needs, seeking, and use Collaborative filtering systems Collaborative querying systems Recommender systems Social bookmarking systems Social navigation systems Social tagging systems Designs for systems to support collaborative information behavior Evaluations of systems to support collaborative information behavior Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before November 15, 2009, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by November 30, 2009 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 15, 2009. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference) and Medical Information Science Reference imprints. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit www.igi-global.com.
