Dear AoIR-ists, The 11th Laval conference described in the lower part of this CFP has a number of tracks that will certainly be of interest to many on this list - please forward to colleagues and students for whom this might be relevant. And please do the same for those - including, but not exclusively, philosophers - who would be interested in the affiliated symposium, "Philosophy of Identity in the Virtual." à bientôt, - charles ess The Philosophy of Identity in the Virtual <http://www.laval-virtual.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=113& Itemid=209> Symposium 6, April 23, 9-12 AM / 2-5 PM Site: http://www.laval-virtual.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=113&I temid=209 For information on the venue and related Symposiums: http://www.laval-virtual.org/ Topic: Difference, Relation and Identity are three notions that are fundamentals for the success of Virtual Reality technologies (VR and AR). The aim of this symposium is to conceptualise the Identity of an individual as a scientific concept whilst acknowledging the fact that Identity cannot be studied without considering the other two notions. The pros and cons of designing identities for or within VR become obvious upon admitting that representing any Self will be interpreted at some point by someone having his own values, opinions and experience in life. Members of our society that self-procure, attribute or redistribute Identity in the Virtual World bring about psychological enquiries in relation to user intentionality, specific uses of VR applications or general modifications to our ways of communicating. Usability issues addressing the problem of Identity have not yet been integrated into long-term visions of society and our needs. The Chair of the session is thus open to all existential, ethical and epistemological issues having to do with Identity in Virtual Communities. **Important Dates** Online papers submission opens **November 30, 2008** Submission of full papers **January 19, 2009** Notification of acceptation **February 27, 2009** Deadline for final revisions **March 16, 2009** Symposium chair: Colin Schmidt, colin.schmidt(a)univ-lemans.fr For more information, see the Call for Paper <http://www.laval-virtual.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=59&I temid=111> **Advanced Program** Coming soon... **Scientific Committee ** Scientific Committee Jean-Paul BAQUIAST, Expert in Politics of Information Technologies. arXiv Repository Hits Milestone
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 05 Oct '08

Colleagues/ The Longest Journey Begins With The First Step! /Gerry Online Scientific Repository Hits Milestone | With 500,000 Articles, arXiv Established as Vital Library Resource [ http://arxiv.org/] ITHACA, N.Y. (October 3, 2008) - Reinforcing its place in the scientific community, the arXiv repository at Cornell University Library reached a new milestone in October 2008. Half a million e-print postings - research articles published online - now reside in arXiv, which is free and available to the public. arXiv is the primary daily information source for hundreds of thousands of researchers in many areas of physics and related fields. Its users include the world's most prominent researchers in science, including 53 Physics Nobel Laureates, 31 Fields Medalists and 55 MacArthur Fellows, as well as people in countries with limited access to scientific materials. The famously reclusive Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman posted the proof for the 100-year-old Poincaré Conjecture solely in arXiv. [snip] "arXiv began its operations before the World Wide Web, search engines, online commerce and all the rest, but nonetheless anticipated many components of current 'Web 2.0' methodology," said Cornell professor Paul Ginsparg, arXiv's creator. "It continues to play a leading role at the forefront of new models for scientific communication. [snip] More than 200,000 articles are downloaded from arXiv each week by about 400,000 users, and its 118,000 registered submitters live in nearly 200 countries, including Suriname, Sudan and Iraq. Fifteen countries host mirrors of the main site, which is located on Cornell's campus in Ithaca, N.Y. "It represents an incredible model for scholarly communication that transcends borders, publishers and time," said Anne R. Kenney, Cornell's Carl A. Kroch University Librarian. "We bring operational stability and a demonstrated track record of stewardship to this invaluable open-access resource." [snip] Ginsparg developed arXiv in 1991, when he was working for Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. When Ginsparg came to Cornell as a faculty member in 2001, the repository came with him and is now a collaboration between Cornell University Library and Cornell's Information Science Program. The Library maintains the repository; information science handles research and development. [snip] "We're excited to not only sustain and grow arXiv, but also to make it an integral part of the global scholarly communications infrastructure," said arXiv manager Simeon Warner, who has been working on the project for nearly a decade. Since 2004, our annual study has unearthed and analyzed the trends and themes of blogging, but for the 2008 study, we resolved to go beyond the numbers of the Technorati Index to deliver even deeper insights into the blogging mind. For the first time, we surveyed bloggers directly about the role of blogging in their lives, the tools, time, and resources used to produce their blogs, and how blogging has impacted them personally, professionally, and financially. Our bloggers were generous with their thoughts and insights. Thanks to all of the bloggers who took the time to respond to our survey. Blogs are Pervasive and Part of Our Daily Lives There have been a number of studies aimed at understanding the size of the Blogosphere, yielding widely disparate estimates of both the number of blogs and blog readership. All studies agree, however, that blogs are a global phenomenon that has hit the mainstream. The numbers vary but agree that blogs are here to stay * comScore MediaMetrix (August 2008) * Blogs: 77.7 million unique visitors in the US * Facebook: 41.0 million | MySpace 75.1 million * Total internet audience 188.9 million * eMarketer (May 2008) * 94.1 million US blog readers in 2007 (50% of Internet users) * 22.6 million US bloggers in 2007 (12%) * Universal McCann (March 2008) * 184 million WW have started a blog | 26.4 US * 346 million WW read blogs | 60.3 US * 77% of active Internet users read blogs [ http://www.technorati.com/blogging/state-of-the-blogosphere/ ]

Hi Everyone, Apologies for crossposting. Since 1999, I have been maintaining a collection of web pages that provides links to useful resources for people on the academic job market. You can find it at: http://sterneworks.org/Academe I am always looking for good suggestions for material to add to the site, and as you'll see, I have used it to archive some material that has been circulated in other fora. If you have a suggestion for a link or a document worth archiving, please email me at jonathan.sterne(a)mcgill.ca. Please note that I do not post or keep track of job ads. I intend to continue building the site, so suggestions for other areas to cover would be appreciated. There are also probably typos and other small errors on the new pages that need correction. Thank you. Report prepared by Rob van Kranenburg for the Institute of Network Cultures with contributions by Sean Dodson. 64 pages, design by Léon & Loes The Internet of Things - Network Notebook Launch Date and time: Tuesday 28 October 2008 at 17h00 Location: Waag Society, Theatrum Anatomicum, Nieuwmarkt 4, Amsterdam Free entrance, send an email to reserveren(a)waag.org if you want to attend the launch. The Internet of Things is the second issue in the series of Network Notebooks. It’s a critique of ambient technology and the all-seeing network of RFID by Rob van Kranenburg. Rob examines what impact RFID and other systems, will have on our cities and our wider society. He currently works at Waag Society as program leader for the Public Domain and wrote earlier an article about this topic in the Waag magazine and is the co-founder of the DIFR Network. The notebook features an introduction by journalist and writer Sean Dodson. The launch includes short presentations from Martijn de Waal, Eric Kluitenberg and Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, and a discussion, led by Geert Lovink. In Network Notebook #2, titled The Internet of Things, Rob van Kranenburg outlines his vision of the future. He tells of his early encounters with the kind of location-based technologies that will soon become commonplace, and what they may mean for us all. He explores the emergence of the “internet of things”, tracing us through its origins in the mundane back-end world of the international supply chain to the domestic applications that already exist in an embryonic stage. He also explains how the adoption of he technologies of the City Control is not inevitable, nor something that we must kindly accept nor sleepwalk into. In van Kranenburg’s account of the creation of the international network of Bricolabs, he also suggests how each of us can help contribute to building technologies of trust and empower ourselves in the age of mass surveillance and ambient technologies. Table of Contents: 1. Forward: A tale of two cities Sean Dodson 2. Ambient Intelligence and its promises 3. Ambient Intelligence and its catches 4. Bricolabs 5. Call for Papers - MEA Convention June 2009 St. Louis
by Janet Sternberg 04 Oct '08

Call for papers Media Ecology Association 2009 Annual Convention June 18-21, 2009 Saint Louis University St. Louis, Missouri "Ecology" a word derived from the Greek words meaning "household knowledge." For the 2009 MEA convention, we seek papers on any aspect of media ecology. Special interest in the places and spaces of media interactions: Silicon Valley or St. Louis; screen, studio, library, or street. Does place matter? Local systems, larger systems, and changing relationships in the ecology of media. The role(s) of media in different ecological systems. The changing geography of media: Why do some forms emerge and others recede? The ethics of (not) setting boundaries. Living in information systems: Are we the center, the web, the flaneur? What is the I in the culture of iPods, iPhones, and iGames? Because the 2009 MEA Convention will meet at Saint Louis University, where Walter J. Ong was a faculty member, papers on any aspect of his work are especially welcome. Papers and session proposals should be sent by January 15 to Prof. Sara van den Berg, Dept. of English, Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO 63108-3414. Electronic submissions (preferred) to vandens(a)slu.edu. All submissions will be acknowledged. This meeting will be sponsored by the Walter J. CFP: Symposium title: Race, Ethnicity, and (New) Media April 30-May 2, 2009
by Holly Kruse 04 Oct '08

Forwarded on request. Holly -------- Would it be possible to circulate the CFP below on the AOIR listserv? Thank you, --Sarah N. Gatson CALL FOR PAPERS Symposium title: Race, Ethnicity, and (New) Media April 30-May 2, 2009 The Race & Ethnic Studies Institute at Texas A&M University (http:// resi.tamu.edu/ <https://libarts.tamu.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=https:// libarts.tamu.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://resi.tamu.edu/> ) convenes a symposium every other year, and the proposed theme for the 2008-2009 year is Shifting Terrains: Inequalities in the 21st Century, and the symposium itself is to focus on Race, Ethnicity, and (New) Media. The explosion of work on New Media (including the Internet, mobile devices, Web 2.0) and the juxtaposition and overlap between 'old' media (radio, television, film, and mass- print media) and New Media is a rich field of cultural production and scholarly research in which scholars of race and ethnicity have not been particularly well- represented. However, there are cutting edge scholars who do indeed explore various aspects of race/ethnicity and (New) Media (including audience/fan studies, representations of racial and ethnic identities in a variety of media, identity-focused online communities, etc.). We invite such scholars to submit papers with the intention of presenting work that deals with these topics during a 2 1/2 day interdisciplinary symposium, with several keynote speakers, including Dr. Lisa Nakamura and Dr. Henry Bial. We intend that a number of these papers will be compiled into an edited volume intended for publication, and that all papers and participants will have the opportunity to upload their papers on our developing interactive website for scholarly exchange on working papers. Submissions: 500 word abstracts or full papers of no more than 8000 words (including notes and references) should be submitted to: gatson(a)tamu.edu and resi(a)tamu.edu by December 31, 2008. Submissions will be reviewed by an organizing committee, and authors will be notified of acceptance/rejection by March 15, 2009. Delete & Prev | Delete & Next Move to:
