text suggestions?
by Karen Farquharson 30 Sep '08

30 Sep '08

I teach an internet and society subject and I'm looking for a text for next year. The subject covers a variety of topics (e.g., social networking, identity, romance, games, politics, social movements) and I'm interested in a book that covers topics like those from a sociological perspective. I used _The Internet in Everyday Life_ a couple of year ago and it worked well but is now a bit out of date. Any suggestions? Classifying YouTube Videos
by Dominic Yeo 29 Sep '08

29 Sep '08

Hi everyone, I'm doing a study of motivations of users in viewing YouTube videos and I'll be constructing a questionnaire that measures users' preferences of the different types of videos on YouTube (among other things). I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestion on how to classify the videos on YouTube (or better yet any published papers that adopt a classification system of YouTube videos). Obviously one straightforward way is to adopt the exact same classification that already exists on YouTube (Autos & Vehicles, Comedy, Education, Entertainment, Film & Animation, Gaming, Howto & Style, Music, News & Politics, People & Blogs, Pets & Animals, Science & Technology, Sports, Travel & Events) but I feel they do not provide sufficient differentiation especially in the area of user-generated videos. Best regards, Dominic

Hi Prof. McKiernan, Jeff Howe has maintained a blog on crowdsourcing since his June 2006 article on the topic. It is located at www.crowdsourcing.com There are a number of other crowdsourcing projects happening out there. With Thomas Sanchez (Dept. of City & Metro. Planning) and Keith Bartholomew (School of Arch.) at the University of Utah, I recently won a grant from the Federal Transit Administration to test crowdsourcing in a transit planning context. We're kicking off the project soon. Shoot me an email sometime: daren.brabham(a)utah.edu db --- Daren C. Brabham Graduate Teaching Fellow Department of Communication University of Utah 255 S. Web Tools for Social Workers
by Dan Prives 28 Sep '08

28 Sep '08

I'm looking for help in updating a lecture I give to some social work students about blogging and other new web technologies. I start out with an overview of the blogging world and then turn to resources more relevant to social workers. Here is my current page of references and examples (current as of last spring, when I last gave the lecture): http://www.wheremostneeded.org/reference-new-web-tools-f.html Any suggestions for improving these examples and resources would be appreciated. Remember that the audience is undergraduate students in a social work program at an honors university. TIA Dan Prives Where Most Needed The Charity Industry Blog http://www.wheremostneeded.org

Positions available in MA in Interactive Media at Elon
by Janna Anderson 27 Sep '08

27 Sep '08

Dear list members, My university is starting an interactive media master's program, and several positions are open. Applications should be sent to imedia(a)elon.edu The School of Communications at Elon University (located in North Carolina in the US) is expanding its faculty again. In connection with starting an M.A. in Interactive Media degree in 2009, the school is beginning a search for at least four new faculty members to join our current 36 full-time professors. The school invites applications for assistant or associate professors. Tenure-track positions require completion of a Ph.D. or MFA and professional experience. Lecturer positions are available for those with an M.A. and significant professional experience. New faculty will teach a combination of graduate courses in interactive media and undergraduate courses in their professional specialties in journalism, strategic communications, broadcast and new media, or cinema. The ideal candidate will have an interactive media background as well as a solid theoretical foundation in interactive design/strategies. Professional experience should include strong scripting and authoring skills and a working understanding of today¹s professional digital media toolset (Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro Studio, etc.). While not essential, skills in 3D modeling/animating, motion graphics design and writing for interactive media, as well as expertise in game theory, add value to a candidate¹s application. Additionally, candidates should present examples of their work in the form of an interactive portfolio (either online or CD), annotated to identify clearly the candidate¹s contribution in each sample. The new M.A. in Interactive Media will be an intensive one-year, full-time program for about 36 graduate students a year. A special Winter Term course features a domestic or international ³fly-in² component to gather content, followed by creation of a team project that serves the public good. Required courses in the program include Theory and Audience Analysis, Interactive Writing and Design, Producing Interactive Media, Interactive Media Strategies, Contemporary Media Issues, and Interactive Media Capstone Project, with electives such as Intellectual Property Law, Citizen and Participatory News, Virtual Environments, Public Opinion through New Media, Visual Aesthetics, and Interactive Media Management and Economics. The nationally accredited School of Communications attracts almost 20 percent of the Elon student body, with an average SAT at the 80th percentile nationally. The national accrediting team praised the school¹s intellectual contributions to the discipline and the school¹s facilities and technology for student use, which includes five multimedia labs, two television studios, suites dedicated to video and audio editing, and a fleet of digital cameras. The school is known for having one of the best facilities for communications learning in the nation. Elon is a private university of 5,000 students in the heart of North Carolina. Students come from 46 states and 45 nations. Newsweek named Elon the nation¹s hottest college for engaged learning. U.S. News World Report named Elon the top ³Up-and-Coming² school in a listing of colleges and universities that have made ³striking improvements or innovationsschools everyone should be watching² and ranks Elon No. 2 among 119 Southern master¹s-level university. U.S. News also lists Elon¹s academic programs in seven of the eight categories in this year¹s ³Programs to Look For² feature. To apply, send an application letter, CV (including examples of your work in the form of an interactive portfolio available online or by DVD) and list of references to iMedia(a)elon.edu. Review of applications begins immediately and continues until the positions are filled. To learn more about the School of Communications, visit www.elon.edu/communications. Elon University complies with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Federal law requires proper identification of identity and employability prior to final consideration for this position. Credentials will be verified. New Web-based Intercoder Reliability Calculator for Content Analysis
by Deen Freelon 27 Sep '08

27 Sep '08

Hello internet researchers, Those of you who use content analysis in your research might be interested in a recent project of mine: ReCal ("reliability calculator"), an online utility that calculates several intercoder reliability coefficients for nominal data. It is available at http://dfreelon.org/utils/recalfront/ . Here is a short feature list: * Calculates the following reliability coefficients: * percent agreement * average pairwise percent agreement (for 3+ coders) * Scott’s Pi * Cohen’s Kappa * Fleiss' Kappa * Krippendorff’s Alpha * Accepts any range of possible variable values * Can calculate reliability for multiple variables at a time (2 coders only) * Displays all possible pairwise percent agreements, making it easier to root out rogue coders (3+ coders only) * Results should be valid for nominal data coded by any number of coders There are other solutions available, but PRAM is Windows-only (ReCal is written in PHP, so it's cross-platform) and the various macros floating around the web for SPSS, STATA, R, and the like are only useful if you have easy access to those applications. ReCal is fast, free, and (hopefully) relatively easy to use. It is currently still undergoing testing, but its results have been demonstrated to be robust thus far. If you decide to use it, feel free to leave feedback on the web site or email me directly. Thanks, ~DEEN -- Deen Freelon Ph.D. Student, Communication University of Washington dfreelon(a)u.washington.edu
