Popularity of various blogging services
by Sarah Michele Ford 22 Sep '08

22 Sep '08

Hi all, I’m trying to find out how my sample of bloggers compares to others in terms of the blogging services they use (i.e., what percentage are using LiveJournal versus Blogger versus MT/Typepad, and so on). Can anyone point me to other studies that break down their bloggers by service, or to reports about which services are the most popular? I already have the 2006 Pew report on bloggers but I would love to be able to compare my numbers to more than just that group. Thanks! Favorite Musical Discoveries via MP3 Blogs-an AOIR 9.0 project
by Margie Borschke 22 Sep '08

22 Sep '08

Hello, I'm very much looking forward to meeting many of you at the conference. I'm presenting some of my research on mp3 blogs at the conference and was hoping for some asynchronous (off-the-record) participation from the list. Please email me (off-the-list) a song you 'discovered' or rediscovered via an mp3 blog. I'll need the artist's name, the blog's name and a link to the post of origin, if possible. Should you like to tell me anything about the song, I'm all ears. All submissions to the project (hereafter known as, Off The Record) are are confidential. I look forward to hearing from you. Online behaviour change studies
by Brian Cugelman (discussions) 22 Sep '08

22 Sep '08

Dear Friend. As part of my PhD, I'm conducting a review of Internet-based behavioural change interventions. In particular, I'm searching for empirical studies on using websites or email to encourage behaviours, such as those related to environmental protection, health, safety, or social development. To ensure I don't miss any key documents, I'd like to ask if you could recommend any published or unpublished empirical research. If you have any suggestions, I'd be grateful if you could email me any citations, links, or documents. Thanks in advance for your support. Hi Matt, Seems like I didn't convey the whole picture. I am not doing doctoral research as yet. The study I mentioned was a term paper back home when I was doing my masters in India. I submitted it for a conference and they asked me to revise it and resubmit. This research is aside from what I plan to study going ahead in the PhD. program, which hasn't even started yet. And I have spoken to a few people already and read some relevant books in this regard to revise the methodology and address the ethics question. But I am glad you mentioned the IRB. I wasn't familiar with it but I am sure I'll learn more about it during the course of my study. Thanks a lot again Pawan

LINI launched in Lisbon and welcoming networking and sharing of research outputs
by gustavo cardoso 21 Sep '08

21 Sep '08

Dear Colleagues, I would like to announce the launch of LINI, Lisbon Internet and Networks International Research Programme http://www.lini-research.org . LINI is the outcome of the networking of four Portuguese research institutions (CIES, MRC, ADETTI and OberCom). LINI intends to become a key player in the networking of information and communication technologies and the scientific domains of social and political sciences, economics, management and open source technologies. Our focus of attention is Europe, Portuguese Speaking Countries and Latin America, but also extending our research to themes and areas in North America, Asia and Africa. The LINI research programme targets defined areas that are critical to the public interest and business. A crucial element of this project is the ability to identify research areas that internationally, although of critical interest to the society, have not yet been thoroughly researched by leading scientific institutions of the Social Sciences, Information and Communications Technologies and Economics and Management. The four separate, but inter-related areas, in which most of our research is undertaken are: *Open Source Society and Free knowledge* *Networked Communication* *Networks and Mobility in Everyday life* *The Network Enterprise and Innovation* *Thank you for your attention and, if not sooner, hope to network at AoIR Conference in Copenhagen,*** *Best,*** *Gustavo Cardoso* More Information to be found here: http://www.lini-research.org

Pawan, >From the sound of it you haven't got through an IRB (Institutional Review Board) process. Let me suggest that you temporarily suspend your research until you do so. At universities in the US that receive Public/Federal funding, any significant human research must get vetted by the schools IRB board (for better or worse). Since you're dealing with sexual material and the issue of whether the data you are recording is confidential or public, you're definitely in the territory of the IRB. And if you proceed without the go ahead, you may not be able to use the research that you gather -- I've known a number of people who've been through hell and back getting the IRB to allow research that was conducted prior to getting the requiste permissions to be used for thesis and disertations. - Matt On Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 6:00 PM, <air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org> wrote: > Message: 1 > Date: Fri, 19 Sep 2008 18:27:54 -0700 > From: "Pawan Singh" <pawansinghh(a)gmail.com> > Subject: Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 50, Issue 18 > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Message-ID: > <8f8920530809191827h6ab7940apb4acfd6930dd1d3f(a)mail.gmail.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 > > Thank you Koen, Steve and Nishant, > First off, I just joined UC San Diego, so it'll take them a bit of time to > put up my page on the website. Thank you Koen, Steve and Nishant, First off, I just joined UC San Diego, so it'll take them a bit of time to put up my page on the website. I know it's important to have a page describing one's research and academic work but due to bureaucratic procedures this might only happen during the mid of the quarter. Koen, I did contact the people with those profiles and also requested interview appointments but their perception of their participation in a research concerning their sexuality is a major concern. So I've run into a bit of an impasse there. But I'll try again with a different set of respondents and see what happens. Thanks, I am reading Nakumura's work and will hopefully use it in my paper. Steve, I'll have to figure this out with my department. So definitely a suggestion to keep in mind. Thank you. Nishant, thank you for an elaborate message and I think your suggestions are valuable. I'll need to restructure my paper in order to look beyond the profile content. Maybe the offline context in which sexuality is experienced and then how it is actively constructed online in these spaces. Profiles provide a lot of rich raw data for producing analytically thick descriptions but I guess what you suggest is certainly a way around the problem. Just one clarification. Do you think my personal interaction with the respondents is less subject to ethics than using profile data? Do I still need to obtain permission to use it for research. Thanks for all your suggestions guys. Pawan

Inmagic Presto: A Social Knowledge Management
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 19 Sep '08

Colleagues/ A Most Interesting Friday Discovery - Inmagic(r) Presto: A Social Knowledge Management /Gerry Inmagic(r) Presto is a social knowledge management platform designed to improve productivity and effectiveness within information-dependent communities by leveraging their information and human assets. Inmagic(r) Presto represents a fundamentally new approach to information and knowledge management by tightly integrating, into a single environment, a knowledge repository, information search, access and discovery tools and the "wisdom of the community." Presto's unique approach yields an ideal application platform for integrating "topdown" vetted information with "bottom-up" social knowledge to address an organization's most critical initiatives that span functional groups.
