NA-CAP@IU 2009: Networks and Their Philosophical Implications (http://ia-cap.org/na-cap09/) June 14th-16th at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana Preliminary CFP Deadline: February 1st 2009 (firm) In recent years, across several different academic disciplines, including biology, computer science, cognitive science, informatics, philosophy and psychology, a shift in the study of complex systems is readily visible. This shift away from a focus on the individual components of a system to the interrelations between them has provided the groundwork for what might broadly be called a "network" perspective, as it has become increasingly clear that simple components can produce astoundingly complex and varied behavior when they work in consort. Evidence for this observation is seen everywhere from biological neural networks, stigmergic systems, and animal behavior to networked computing, social networking, and dynamic systems. This conference will explore the philosophical implications of this network perspective as it applies to the broader scope of topics studied by our association. To this end, we are interested in receiving submissions that explore themes in the intersection of philosophy and computing insofar as they involve, for instance: * Academic/Scientific Citation Networks * Artificial Neural (Connectionist) Networks * Biological Neural Networks * The Internet / World-Wide Web * Multi-Agent Reasoning and Decision-Making * Networked Computing * Networked Robotics / Swarm Intelligence * Semantic Networks * Social Networking * Stigmergic Systems * Ubiquitous Computing Individual submissions might address a range of subtopics, including the ethical and political implications of social networking, theoretical analyses of networked computing, the implications of artificial or biological neural networks for issues in the philosophy of mind, how community and technology enable networked thinking, reasoning and decision-making, etc. We also welcome submissions not directly on the conference theme, though first preference will go to those that fit within the broad parameters outlined here. We welcome submissions for papers, panels and demonstrations of computing and philosophy applications. Papers and demonstrations will be allotted 40 minutes, including time for commentary and questions (25 minutes for presentation, 5 for commentary and 10 for Q&A). 120-minute slots are available for panels and can be divided as the panelists see fit. For papers, please limit submission length to 3,000 words, keeping in mind that the IACAP discourages participants from reading their papers to the audience. (Many presenters prepare slides using PowerPoint or some other software package. However, these need not be submitted with your original paper.) Include also a 250-word abstract. The IACAP discourages "show-and-tell" demonstrations, but welcomes submissions that show a new and interesting application of computers to philosophy. Submissions in this category should consist of a 1,500-word abstract outlining what is innovative about the application and the questions pertinent to philosophy that your demonstration will raise. For panels, please submit a 1,000-word summary of the panel as a whole, along with 300 to 500-word abstracts for each of its various components. The conference will be accepting electronic submissions appropriately prepared for blind review on or before February 1st, 2009. Colleagues/ A Very Important Publication: _The Use And Misuse Of Bibliometric Indices In Evaluating Scholarly Performance_ / _Ethics In Science And Enviromental Politics_ / Editors: Howard I. Browman, Konstantinos I. Stergiou THEME SECTION: Quantifying the relative performance of individual scholars, groups of scholars, departments, institutions, provinces/states/regions and countries has become an integral part of decision-making over research policy, funding allocations, awarding of grants, faculty hirings, and claims for promotion and tenure. Bibliometric indices (based mainly upon citation counts), such as the h-index and the journal impact factor, are heavily relied upon in such assessments. There is a growing consensus, and a deep concern, that these indices - more-and-more often used as a replacement for the informed judgement of peers - are misunderstood and are, therefore, often misinterpreted and misused. The articles in this ESEP Theme Section present a range of perspectives on these issues. Alternative approaches, tools and metrics that will hopefully lead to a more balanced role for these instruments are presented. In this context, the circumstances of interaction, particularly those generated by Internet, have allowed digital diasporas to mushroom, as cyberspace configurations for social groups of people who are geographically scattered but sharing some common national background. This makes it relevant to create an opportunity for reflection on the subject, approaching the construction of distance networks and communities, their relationships with the place of origin and impact on that place. This implies reflection on relations which transnational social networks have with ideas of culture, identity and development. Dear AoIRists, (Shameless self-promotion): As some of you know, I've been working on a textbook titled _Digital Media Ethics_. (Happy AoIR promostion): The book features the work of many AoIR colleagues, including Elizabeth Buchanan, Dan Burk, Mia Consalvo, Bernhard Debatin, Marie-Christine Deyrich, Niels Øle Finnemann, Lorna Heaton, Chris Helland, Susan Herring, Connie Kampf, Leah Macfadyen, Susanna Paasonen, Daniel Pimienta, Miguel Sicart, Fay Sudweeks, and Maya van der Velden. I'm also very happy to acknowledge (as I do in the book) the generous assistance of Mia Consalvo, Susanna Paasonen, and Miguel Sicart particularly with regard to the chapter on games and pornograpy. Best of all, I'm happy to say that the volume is now scheduled to be published by Polity Press in late February, 2009. Here's the blurb: == This is the first textbook on the central ethical issues of digital media, ranging from computers and games to the Internet and mobile phones. It is also the first book of its kind to consider these issues from a global perspective, introducing ethical theories from multiple cultures. It further utilizes examples from around the world, such as the publication of ³the Mohammed Cartoons²; diverse understandings what ³privacy² means in Facebook or MySpace; why pirating CDs and DVDs may be justified in developing countries; and culturally-variable perspectives on sexuality and what counts as ³pornography.² Readers and students thus acquire a global perspective on the central ethical issues of digital media, including privacy, copyright, pornography and violence, and the ethics of cross-cultural communication online. The book is designed for use across disciplines media and communication studies, computer science and informatics, as well as philosophy. It is up-to-date, accessible and student- and classroom-friendly: each topic and theory is interwoven throughout the volume with detailed sets of questions that foster careful reflection, writing, and discussion into these issues and their possible resolutions. Each chapter further includes additional resources and suggestions for further research and writing. == There will also be a website affiliated with the text where faculty and students will be able to contribute examples, additional exercises, etc. - and I'm also looking forward to 2.0, with expanded material on mobile phones (working on that now -suggestions, comments, resources, etc. much appreciated!). Two things: 1) I'm happy to share a pre-publication version of the book (with the usual caveats re. no copying, citation, or distribution without permission) with colleagues who may be interested in having a look at the text - ideally, with a view towards "road-testing" one or two of the chapters and its exercises in their own teaching. If you would like to see this version of the book, please let me know offlist and I'll happily send the PDF your way. 2) I've also been asked by the publisher to develop a list of colleagues who might be interested in adopting the book in their teaching. Again, if anyone on this list is interested in reviewing the pre-publication version with this possibility in mind, I'd be happy to send the PDF along. Of course, if you can think of anyone else who might be interested in reviewing and possibly adopting the text, please let me know. TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN INTERMEDIA DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, MONTREAL Concordia University's Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in INTERMEDIA. The Department has recently launched Intermedia as a fourth production stream in its highly selective undergraduate program, to complement established offerings in Film, Video, and Sound. This innovation has been broadly conceived to take account of the massive changes wrought by the computerization of culture in the arts, in professional practice, and in the academy. Our adoption of the term intermedia is intended to address a confluence of media practices diverse, hybrid, liminal, analog and digital that cannot be easily captured in any one, established medium. The stream currently draws on the principles and practices of graphic design and typography, motion graphics, stopmotion animation, interactivity and database documentary. In order to strengthen and advance this innovative curricular development in the field of communication studies we seek a highly qualified, conceptually oriented theorist-practitioner with an MFA, PhD, or equivalent in a related field, and a professional-level portfolio of creative work, who will collaborate in enriching and expanding this novel area of teaching, research and creative activity. Candidates will be expected to be active researchers and creators, teach and supervise students both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The ideal candidate might, for example, be especially active in research/creation in one or more of the following areas (and, ideally, conversant in at least a few of the others): analog/digital photography in any genre; minorities and social networking; digital archiving; performance; hacking and residual media; mobile technologies; free and open source software; data visualization and information graphics; physical computing. We especially welcome critical feminist approaches. The ideal candidate should have experience teaching in an undergraduate studio environment, and be capable of providing instruction in a coherent range of digital media authoring and computing tools, eg Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, Processing, iMovie, Motion, HTML/CSS, Content Management Systems (Drupal, Wordpress). An ability to work across and between some of these media tools and platforms, and an active awareness of open source alternatives, would be especially desirable. Founded in 1965, the Department of Communication Studies at Concordia University is Canada's oldest degree-granting department in the discipline. The Department offers programs leading to the BA, Graduate Diploma, MA, and PhD degrees. The undergraduate Degree in Communication Studies is well known for its integration of media production and critical theoretical perspectives; we offer the only undergraduate program in Communication and Cultural Studies and the only graduate diploma in Communication in Canada; our MA in Media Studies is unique in its structure and focus; the bilingual and inter-university PhD program offers access to a wide range of resources and expertise. Finished papers, research-in-progress and panel proposals are sought for the 2008 SIG-CCRIS in Paris. Submissions will be double blind peer reviewed. With a long tradition of congregating researchers interested in Cross-Cultural issues in IS, this meeting has been a good point of contact for those who are actively involved in the area or who would like to know a little more about what other researchers are doing in this area.
