Suggestions on ethics of using online data for academic research
by Pawan Singh 19 Sep '08

19 Sep '08

Hi, I am Pawan Singh, a PhD. student in Communication at UC, San Diego. I am currently working on a paper that looks at questions of identity construction and performance online by gay men in the Indian context. I am basically looking at some of the user profiles on a popular dating/hook-up site used by gay men to understand how they self-construct identity and form relationships in this space. I understand that the data on these profiles is private even though it's in a public space. When I chose some profiles using purposive sampling, I contacted the users for their consent. Very few responded while others dismissed the research as hoax. I am investigating how I can go ahead and produce an virtual ethnographic analysis based on this profiles in an ethical fashion. I could change the names of the user profiles but does that suffice? If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. It'll be a great help. Thanks, Pawan Singh

I'm wondering if the AoIR community can help me with the following things: 1. I am specifically interested in conversational or discourse analyses of individual blogs' comment threads. Does anyone have a good bibliography on this topic, or can you recommend articles? Conversational or discourse analyses of forum comment threads and probably even of flame wars would also be helpful. 2. If you've seen comment posts like these on your own blog, would you be willing to send along referrer logs for those pages? Call for papers: Is Google Good for Geography?
by martin dodge 18 Sep '08

18 Sep '08

Call for papers - 2009 Association of American Geographers Annual Conference. 22-27 March 2009, Las Vegas, USA. Is Google Good for Geography? Web2.0 and the Political Economy of User Generated Geographical Knowledge Session organisers: Matthew Zook Department of Geography, University of Kentucky Martin Dodge Geography, School of Environment and Development, University of Manchester Context: The dramatic rise of Web2.0 applications and practices have facilitated the creativity and voluntary collaboration of masses of Internet users, e.g., wikis, folksonomies, mash-ups, tagging, social networking, etc. Of particular interest to Geographers are the evolving forms, functions and scope of spatial referenced information such as local news, reviews, commentaries, recommendations, photographs and maps. Perhaps the highest profile example is GoogleMaps which allows for user generated placemarks and geotagged images, ground-truthing, spatial reviews, etc. and is changing the amount and granularity of information readily available about vernacular places. But widespread user generated data and notations need not translate into valuable knowledge nor is this process neutrally distributed across all places or among all peoples. In short, this session explores where, by whom, about what and how the introduction of Web2.0 applications is producing knowledge about places. Suggested themes: We invite theoretically informed analyses questioning the social effects, cultural meanings and political economy of Web2.0 innovations for geography, with particular consideration of the following themes: # Assessing the real potential of Web2.0 geographical knowledge to encompass alternative voices and richer descriptions of place. # The perils of Web2.0 geographical knowledge to further the commodification of local places and the marketisation of personal feelings and ideas. # The politics of the Web2.0 socio-technical infrastructures and corporate structures underpinning the collection and distribution of user generated geographical knowledge. # The economies of who owns, indexes, aggregates and repackages user generated knowledge about places. # Consideration of the risks that flow from people's unwitting trust in the truth of Web2.0 geographical knowledge. # The embodied practices of user generated geographical knowledge and the ways in which these may be associated with social power, e.g. gendered, classed, aged, etc. to create the cultural meanings attached to Web2.0. # The efficacy of Web2.0 geographical knowledge. How do we evaluate the accuracy and fidelity of new geographical databases, taxonomies and wiki maps? # The artistic, playful, or subversive potential of the Web2.0 geographical knowledge. # The ethics of web2.0, particularly relating to individual privacy and community rights. The geo-surveillance potential of Web2.0 for states and corporations. ---- Proposed papers in the form of a title and short abstract (250 words maximum) should be submitted to Martin Dodge (m.dodge(a)manchester.ac.uk) by 8th October 2009. Further details on the paper requirements and cost of registration for the AAG meeting are at http://www.aag.org/annualmeetings/2009/index.htm http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/staff/m.dodge/Is_Google_Good_for_Geog…

Need help: conversational analysis, threads, blogs, REFERRAL LOGS

Hi -- One thing I forgot in my request yesterday -- if anyone has seen a misguided comment thread on their blog which is like the ones I described (see below), I could also use REFERRAL LOGS for that page. I am trying to learn more about how the people who comment reach these blogs, so information on search strings will be helpful. Thanks! Reminder: CFP: The Territoire/Places of Writing Studies in HigherEducation (CFP Deadline Sept. 20/30, 2008)
by Doreen Starke-Meyerring, Dr. 18 Sep '08

18 Sep '08

Dear colleagues, this is the final call for proposals for the CASDW conference on Writing in Higher Education in Ottawa from May 24-26, 2009 (the most beautiful time to be in Ottawa!) For AoIRers, this call may be of particular interest as the conference also aims to address issues surrounding writing in digital environments, such as copyright, fair use, privacy, plagiarism policing software, open access, etc., the role of wikis, blogs, etc. in writing instruction and digital citizenship. Again the conference invites proposals in two languages--French (see the CFP here http://casdw-acr.mcgill.ca/fr/cfps.htm) and English (see the CFP here: http://casdw-acr.mcgill.ca/en/cfps.htm) The final deadline for this call is Sept 30. Again, we look forward to receiving your proposals and hope to see you in Ottawa in May next year. Best, Doreen -----Original Message----- From: air-l-bounces(a)listserv.aoir.org [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org] On Behalf Of Doreen Starke-Meyerring, Dr. Sent: Wednesday, August 27, 2008 1:52 PM To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] CFP: The Territoire/Places of Writing Studies in HigherEducation (CFP Deadline Sept. 20/30, 2008) Dear colleagues, the Canadian Association for the Study of Discourse and Writing/ Association canadienne de rédactologie (CASDW/ACR; formerly Canadian Association of Teachers of Technical Writing/L'Association canadienne de professeurs de rédaction technique et scientifique) invites you to submit proposals for its international conference at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, from May 24-May 26, 2009. With the conference theme "The Territoire/Places of Writing Studies in Higher Education: Canadian and International Perspectives," we invite proposals that help us identify, interrogate, and illuminate the various locations-physical, administrative, and intellectual-that shape our identities and practices as researchers and teachers of writing. The theme also echoes the recent name change of our association to reflect the growth of our field and the rich diversity of the work undertaken in Writing Studies, including genre studies; rhetorical theory; composition studies; engineering communication; business communication; writing in digital environments; writing centre theory and practice; writing in the disciplines; professional, technical, and scientific communication, and more. Please see the complete call for proposals in English and French (our two conference languages) on our web site at http://casdw-acr.mcgill.ca/en/cfps.htm (English) or http://casdw-acr.mcgill.ca/fr/cfps.htm (French). Please also distribute our call widely to other interested colleagues who may not be on this listserv.
