Call for Participation, Association of Internet Researchers 9.0 Panel Is this the Diamond Age? Exploring competing goals for the OLPC project. The One Laptop Per Child project has hit a raw nerve, and is presently at the centre of competing tensions and conflicts. Is it a real computer, or just a toy. Is the project really about education or new technologies? Does the laptop actually address existing needs, or is it a hegemonic imposition? Does the project meet anyone's legitimate needs? Is it reasonable to abandon established interface and software conventions in favor of a novel interface? How can research communities best navigate the borderlands between developmental and theoretical models and the practical requirements of a scale-driven technological deployment? We are soliciting theoretical and practical papers addressing, but not limited to, such as: (basic grounding) * low cost or disposable computing * design innovations for youth computing * novel uses of low-power / low-eco-impact technologies * grassroots educational projects * mesh-networking as a model for social communication (pedagogy and education) * social construction of knowledge * constructionist learning * transfer of pedagogical experiences and knowledge * education across cultural boundaries * adolescent Internet adoption * child and adolescent development theory * hackable hardware and hackable pedagogy * subversive education * the ethics of radical/emancipatory pedagogy (cf. Ivan Illich and Paolo Friere) (content) * cultural influence / localization of content, privacy, censorship * conflicts between Western notions and 'native' rationales for learning * translating existing technology into XO activities * age-appropriate technology and content * local vs. remote instruction, communication, discussion * technology and the child's cognitive development * technology-driven pedagogy vs. educator drive initiatives * the cultural hegemony of international educational initiatives (platforms) * OLPC, Classmate, and eee platforms * platform ecosystem / development * platform ethics * transgression of expectations * children as software engineers / inventors * user-initiated design Submissions will be reviewed and organizational decisions made quickly. :-) Due date: YESTERDAY Panel participants are requested to submit their brief proposals (200-250 words) to the organizers as quickly as possible, so that we have an opportunity to organize and sequence panels prior to the AoIR submission deadline. Dear all, I'm a new member of this list. I'm a PhD student in Psychology at University of Bari in Italy. I'm interested in participation strategies and identity in virtual community. In particular my research deals with blended community. I have done a first and explorative analysis through Social Network Analysis on two blended communities of students and I would like to integrate the results obtained, analyzing in-depth the rethoric construction of identity using discourse analysis. My doctoral course has a three-months period to spend in a foreign country so I would dedicate myself to identify appropriate discourse markers for my research aim, during that period. Therefore I would like to ask you if someone of you is interested in supervising me for three months in 2008. If someone is interested, please let me know if your Department is interested in being involved in a Socrates or Erasmus program to facilitate the exchanges with my Department. As the public sector is an essential part of mobile government applications and services, the key feature of the EURO mGOV 2008 is the mGovernment summit. Hi all, I'm organizing a panel on particpatory culture, in particular how websites like Flickr, Del.icio.us, Facebook, etc channel user behavior and encourage contributions and other participation in their design. In particular, they encourage: - further disclosure of personal data (for marketing purposes) - further contributions from the user - recruitment of or connections with other users - click through to advertiser and partner sites - purchasing a product or membership The panel will explore this dynamic on several levels: - analyzing the aesthetic syntax of the actual user interface - analyzing the rhetorical behavior of users through their actions and comments - analyzing the interaction of users and web designers other ideas are welcome too, like targeting specific groups, linkages between sites--it's open! If the answer is *too often,* a San Francisco company, Radar Networks, is testing a free, Web-based application, called Twine, that may provide some robotic secretarial help in organizing and retrieving documents. Twine (twine.com) can scan almost any electronic document for the names of people, places, businesses and many other entities that its algorithms recognize. Then it does something unusual: it automatically tags or marks all of these items in orange and transfers them to an index on the right side of the screen. This index grows with every document you view, as the program adds subjects that it can recognize or infer from their context. Customers have individual accounts on Twine*s Web site, where they save URLs or other information. They can make their collections, or *twines,* private, share them in groups with other members having common interests like politics or fashion, or even make the twines public. Book Announcement: HCI Remixed

We're pleased to announce a new book that should interest AoIR folks. HCI Remixed: Reflections on Works That Have Influenced the HCI Community What is a remix? In music, a remix is an edited version of a song that builds on the themes of the original while incorporating new elements. But anything can be remixed, and in HCI Remixed we asked contributors to reflect on a piece of work -- a paper, system or demo -- that is at least ten years old. We asked them to pick a piece of work that they were enthusiastic about, and to consider how it had changed their view of HCI and shaped their work. The result is a book of 51 short, engaging and idiosyncratic essays that take a positive and synthetic approach to the work, asking what it got right, and what, after ten years or more, still has value. The essays cover a lot of ground. One considers Murial Cooper's contributions to dynamic typography, another the relationship between Cinderella and the Diffusion of Innovations, and another how a toy doll named Lily can transcend time and space to go Beyond Being There. The essayists of HCI Remixed explain how the Wizard of Oz was really John Gould, how both adults and children are willing to use felt and flannel and how "1 + 1 = 3" during user interface design. Taken together, the essays offer an accessible, lively, and engaging introduction to HCI research, illustrating where our community has been so that we can better understand where we are going.
